    Also the perception filter wasn't trying to pretend something was there, but that something wasn't (like the TARDIS' perception filter in Boom Town). It's why Craig never truly bothered with the man upstairs aside from like one single time. The perception filter just never made him want to bother.
    The people walking by were coerced into noticing which is why they did.
    The way the perception filter is portrayed here is correct Harry in my opinion.

      No, I think you are wrong.
      ‘Perception filter, there never was a top floor’
      Opposite of its intended use, the perception filter would make you not notice whatever was there rather than insist a top floor was there and now gone, a chameleon circuit makes it look like a top floor.
      The TARDIS uses both, perception filter so people tend to ignore it or treat it as harmless / uninteresting, it doesnt make it look like a police box or house.

    • @Kranitoko
      @Kranitoko 3 года назад

      Jon Smith hes referring to the top floor just being a ship, as in there never really was a top floor. Think of it this way: if the actual TARDIS landed on the roof and it looked part of the scenery and links to the home below, is it now a top floor? No, because there never was a top floor.

    • @jonsmith5058
      @jonsmith5058 3 года назад +1

      @@Kranitoko yeah I know, but if it was a perception filter, as the Doctor said in my quote, it wouldnt look like a top floor, people just wouldnt want to look at it or notice it. Never, at any point ever, has a perception filter changed what something looked like, it merely compels you to not notice it or look at it.
      How is the ship appearing as a top floor if the perception filter never alters the appearance of something?

    The "perception filter" aspect was that people ignored it and didn't really question where the second story of a previously one-story house came from, otherwise people (especially Craig I'd imagine) would be gawping at a magic house. Although the situation raises the question of why Craig had the only one-story house in the entire neighbourhood, I don't think I've ever seen a street of terraced houses that were all normal except for a one-story house at the end. It would've worked better imo if there were a bunch of one-story houses and Craig's seemed to be the only two-story house until the end.

    There's a deleted scene where Amy hears whispering in the TARDIS, but forgets when the Doctor next talks to her. Implied to be a Silent in the TARDIS, obviously. The one that blew it up in The Pandorica Opens?? Very messy subject, no clear answers.
    There's also a slender alien figure, dead on the spaceship floor (its original pilot). Probably a Silent too, given we see the same spaceship set in Day of the Moon.

    Your comment on wondering what Amy is doing in the TARDIS during those four days was actually explained in the episode Power of Three in Season 7, where they leave Rory's dad in the TARDIS to watch over the cubes. Around 4 days pass and when they go back in, they find him still sitting there and Rory's dad is surprised by how much time has passed. My guess is, time simply doesn't move in the TARDIS, or it does, just at a much slower pace

  • @DJVaughan
    @DJVaughan 3 года назад +13

    I mean that’s how perception filters work in the show, most of the time we just see it on people instead of large objects.
    The Tardis is suppose to work like that with the different forms it can takes (it has both a perception filter & a chameleon circuit), just the shows been inconsistent about it and it doesn’t change out of the police box form.
    Edit: Perception filters make you not think about or question things.

    • @jonsmith5058
      @jonsmith5058 3 года назад +2

      I think you misunderstand.
      The perception filter just makes you not notice things that are there, its usage is consistent, it does not maks you think it is something else.
      Thats why people dont notice the TARDIS, or Torchwoods elevator entrance or Amy’s extra room. They do not see something different entirely and if they focus or the thing is specifically pointed out to them then they will notice.
      A chameleon circuit is a thing TARDIS can do where they change their outwards appearance so when they arrive somewhere they change to a mundane object that fits into that time/place.
      The Doctors TARDIS is broken and got stuck at a blue police call box so it no longer changes.

      Other then the inconsitent part, you're not really disagreeing with me. Just giving a more detailed explanation.
      Also we see the sixth Doctor attempting to fix the chameleon circuit, so givem that, the passage of time and the phasing out the tenth Doctor did I wouldn't be surprised if at somepoint in the near future is retconed as being fixed for some time but the Doctor & the Tardis just like the blue police box.

    I feel like the point about The perception filter is wrong.. I think its all to do with the silence' ability to make everyone forget them.
    Every time Amy did notice that room in her house she would forget it as soon as she walked away. Same with the flat above. Whenever someone looks into it existing they probably immediately forget about it. Craig knows it's there but as he's never (or so least by our knowledge, he may have but then forgotten about it) entered the flat so he's never had to forget about what's inside he just accepts the story his brain probably suspects about the flat that he comes up with everyone he thinks about the flat
    It also makes sense rhat the silence were probably observing amy growing up and used that room as their base. And thebones from the flat were probably killed by humans killing them on sight

    It was never meant to be a serious episode. We cried our eyes out with Van Gogh the week before. We needed a loony funny episode.
    Few notes
    * Matt Smith is a former academy football player and using that was smart in terms of resources available.
    *The Doctor spends 4 days...it's not 4 days in The Tardis...it's outside time!
    * The key was not the power of love but thr willingness to take risks and move forward with life.
    * Not a fan of Cordon at all...but his character is not clinging or holding her back, they both or not risk takers...that's the point of why she was no an acceptable pilot.
    * When the Doctor recruits a cat to spy, you just accept it and turn your brain off. Sometimes you just have fun. That's why Tremors is a cult classic.
    It has to be hard to review episodes because we like what we like. But a one-off that turns Dr Who into a sitcom...is fun to many and sill beats the entirety of Series 11-12.

    I didn't realize how hated this episode was. I quite enjoyed this episode for it making the normal mystery sci-fi take a bit of a backseat for just a silly episode of 11 trying to fit in with his wacky personality, and his interactions with Craig. I don't take this episode seriously, cuz I don't think it was supposed to be an actual episode for doctor who, but just a silly episode.

    Being an uncultured American with very little familiarity with James Cordin, I remember thinking this episode was a refreshing change of pace since it wasn’t really trying to hide the fact that it was filler - it was just a silly, comedy focused adventure. But I do agree that the plot falls to pieces under a critical lens.

    I do like certain elements of the writing for this episode and I think Sophie is a really good character (plus I like Daisy Haggard who plays her) but I know I'd like it even better if James Corden wasn't in it. Stuff like the Doctor becoming Mr Football just seems like it's trying to pastiche Matt Smith as an individual. I'm actually a big fan of filler episodes as they allow a breather from a series narrative, but compared to the likes of Amy's Choice this pales in comparison.

    • @QuokkaCore

    • @stardustnation2480
      @stardustnation2480 3 года назад

      It's the same ship. The Silence have been going backward into the Doctor's timeline (see: Time of the Doctor, all of season six, the Pandorica Opens two-parter etc) to kill him & prevent him reaching Trenzalore. The fact that it is a Silence ship reinforces the reason the TARDIS is stuck in a time loop as it will soon be in a couple of episodes.

    • @JoesAnimationHub

      yup, when I learnt that back when I bought DWM and Gareth Roberts revealed an extract of the script, I felt like TFS Vegeta realising TFS Broly was the legendary Super Saiyan... it sounded so goddamn cool! Such a missed opportunity. I notice now several elements point fingers to Meglos which were all elements from the original Meglos Story... To me, the man upstairs was obviously going to be Meglos luring people to body snatch (Meglos needed an earthling for his plan), the footie fans glitching out was pretty much a parallel to the chronic hysteresis, the alien ship looked VERY Zofla-Thuran in design, and the fact that there was in terms of the Doctor Who universe, a bargain bin TARDIS being built sort of gave a throwback to the fact Meglos used Earthling George Morris' (that was his name in the Novelisation, which I proudly own) body to disguise as the 4th Doctor (so Meglos might've gained a 'Doctor Complex' after his planet was atomised).
