  • 2005 Ram 2500 Cummins 5.9 w/ 3.73 gears and G56 6 speed. Stock 4" straight pipe and cold air intake. Sucks on the highway bc it's at 2.5k rpm @ 75mph and 3k rpm @ 90mph without dragging anything. Seriously thinking about 3.42 gears because I'll be using it more as a daily driver than a hauler. Even with my boat @ approximately 7k lbs behind it the 3.42 should tow it just fine

    285/70R17. It really needs a 7th gear and then it would be perfect

    my truck does the exact same thing but I could have swore she has 4.10 gears under her

    Either you're in 5th gear, your speedometer is off a lot, or you are running 4.11 or 4.56 gears. There is no possible way you're that tapped out with 3.73 or 3.55 gears and driving in 6th gear with a g56 manual.

      He has 29 inch tires that’s the reason

      I have a g56 in my dually with 4:10’s. Even with 33’s I am doing better than that. I’m at 2500 rpm at 72mph. And 18mpg or more.

    g56 bolted behind the 5.9l cummins for your model uses 0.79:1 in 6th gear, on 32.7" by 11" tires with 3.73 gears at 3k rpm, you'll be going 99mph; incorrect.
    If you had 4.10:1 gears with 0.79:1 6th gear on 32.7" by 11" tires, you'll be going 90.1mph; correct.
    But, if you do plan on using your truck as a daily, consider the displacement and desired cruising speed. Since your truck has a lower displacement than my truck (6.5l v8) then you'll get better fuel mileage but also consider the power output as well. For the 32.7" and your transmission, I'd consider maybe going with 3.50:1 gears. (at 1700rpm, 0.79:1 6th gear, 3.50:1 diff., 32.7" by 11" tires, you'll go *60mph* )

    I'm planning a 48re to G56 swap. RPMs in the G56AD (what you have) is exactly why I'm looking for a G56AE (behind the 6.7). OD is 0.74 in those.

      Did the swap 4 months ago. 2016 G56 with the 0.74 OD. NICE! 2050rpm at 70mph on 32.7" tires. Pretty much in the pocket for me. 2/3 empty on rural roads. 1/3 towing 15k on interstates. With that mix of needs, gearing is right where I want it. If I get into the mountains, the 6 speed has plenty to choose from. Will admit that the 2005-2007 stock G56s would be a bit frustrating.

    Why is it called "suck on the highway"?

    • @Bajaheat
      @Bajaheat 4 года назад

      Truck Kid learn a little about gear ratios, Rpms and engines. It sucks because he is damn near redline while doing only 75mph...if he had a lower gear ratio like 3.42s he could cruise well below redline thus increasing mpg and reducing wear and tear on the engine

    • @mehameha55
      @mehameha55 7 месяцев назад

      @@Bajaheatactually he'd want a higher ratio, not lower. In gear ratios the higher the number the lower the gearing is.

      @@mehameha55nope, 3.55 would do much better than 4.56 gears on the highway

    Thats 4:10s not 3:73s, I have 3:73s in the same exact truck and my rpms at 80 are 2200 with 33s. Even if the vin shows 3:73s, they have been swapped. I've had 4:10 trucks and they had the same rpm/speed you have.

      Clearly you don't have the same exact truck! Maybe someone put you into some 3.42s and you didn't know? I've got the same truck with 3.73s and my rpms are the same as his.

      My truck is about the same, 07 Dually G56 33’s sits at 2200rpm doing 70 get 13-14mpg’s. about 2600rpm doing 80 and get about 11-12mpg. (Empty) Thought I had 4.10’s and fully planned on putting 3.42’s since i didn’t do 255/70r22.5’s like originally planned to get rpms down. Sadly i counted revolutions to verify and they are 3.73’s.

      4MULAzero I have the exact truck as you, and yes they do suck on the freeways. I'm in Utah and freeway speeds are 80mph

      @4MULAzero  7 лет назад +1

      COMMON RAIL THUG - I'm thinking 3.55s would be perfect. I mainly use it as a daily/every other day driver and tow a boat that's about 10-12k about 10 times a year so they should work for what I want. the programmer gives it plenty of low end balls so torque shouldnt be an issue. more vids to come when I get the time

      Damn that’s how mine is too. It sucks. But I was thinking I have 410 gears and it does the same thing. If I verify it I will let you know cause mines exactly the same. My dad has an automatic 06 cummins and I’ve hit 115 and it still has more in it
