Kimbrel was in the last year of a 3 year, $43 million deal, on a rebuilding team. No way he wasnt going to be traded. Also, if you go back and look at the playoff teams that year, none really NEEDED a closer. Getting anything back was better than just letting him walk. He's on his 4th team since being traded by the Cubs. Hardly a -5 trade.
Stroman was a beast in 2023, into June, with only 3 starts allowing more than 2 ER......then the wheels fell off. While he was a big part of the downfall, that year, he was a HUGE part of the rise in the first half. They got fair value for Stroman and I see it as a 0. Lastly, they couldn't trade him last year, he was injured from July 31 through September 15 and gave up 17 ER (10 innings) in his last three starts before going down.
You gonna give the Contreras, non trade, a -5? This isn't MLB TheShow. You don't make a trade, just to make a trade. You said it yourself, they best offer they got was from the Astros and it wasn't much of an offer, though I wouldn't have minded landing Uriquidy. If Jed didn't like any of the return packages, why make the trade? I just don't think there was a market for Contreras and to blame Jed is assinine. As for Happ, they decided he would man LF for the next 3 years or so. GG defense and top 3 at his position since he became a starter. No issues with keeping Happ.
Swanson's final stats in 2023, were right in line with his career 162 game averages. Not to mention, couch GM's were screaming for Jed to get at least one of the 4 big SS available. Well, I think they got the right one.
The Mancini deal gets a -5 because it blocked Mervis? Mervis has all but proven he's a AAAA player and it saddens me to say that. I was praying he would have come in and rake. Mancini was a a backup play to Hosmer. Hosmer had ZERO chance of making it to June on the team. The signing of Mancini showed that they didn't have complete faith in Mervis and rightfully so.
Love how every season Lead Head Jed says: We will be competitive. I guess this is his definition of "competitive"? I think he meant "incompetent". Much like his tenure. Show him the door.
I think Jed has done fine… guys need to play
Here is the thing with Jed, why won’t he call any prospects up? Davis, Canario, Moises etc like stop calling up guys like Mastrobouni who have no future with us. Be aggressive. If you aren’t going to call them up then trade them! I’m tired of him and the front office constantly talking about how they have such a great farm. If that’s the case, where the hell are these prospects they speak of and why aren’t they helping this current team? See what you have!!! So frustrating.
It’s weird to me too, man
Agreed 110%
Be careful what you wish for as the saying goes. But last year the Cubs should of been sellers.
Well they are going to be sellers now and probably next year
Craig Counsell playoff record in Milwaukee 1-9. Held Corbin Burnes out of last playoff game cause he would only have 3 days rest. Ended up having 5 months rest. Thanks for taking him.Cubbies
Lol
Counsel is not at all worth the money the Cubs are paying him. Especially now with them being in dead last in the NL Central. Not going to complain watching the Cubs playing as poorly as they are. Of course, go Brewers.
One sad fact is that Ricketts is paying Counsell AND Ross for this season's debacle.
😬
If he's not on the hot seat then Ricketts has no business owning the Cubs
💯
Ricketts has never had any business owning a team. MLB should make him sell.
The Ricketts are not holding him accountable so until they put heat on him and get in his ass for his piss poor roster building nothing will change and the cubs will continue to look like this until the Ricketts do something about it!!!
The owners are a huge part of the Cubs problems
Yeah how is it the FUCKIN dodgers and the Yankees spend all that money on players and the CUBS spend it on a manager and don't give him shit to work with, hoyer needs to go and rickets needs to sell the team to someone who wants to win multiple championships
Jim Hendry made better mid season moves to help the roster than Jed.
Hendry was very aggressive
Please watch PCAs fielding in center field. If you watch the games you might change your mind
I don’t see how the kimbrel trade was a -5 since kimbrel sucked as well. I trust Jed and I think we all expected some of these players to take the next step and they didn’t.
This season I think is on the players and that’s it, you want to blame Jed about something it’s the bullpen and pitching development
I picked up Neris on my fantasy team at the beginning of his hot streak. He got me several wins and saves. I dropped him after his first bad outing.
That’s great strategy, Everett!
What about the Cuas deal?
Yeah, I almost put that one in there, but it was basically a wash to me since Velazquez really didn’t have a future on the Cubs
Candelario has 14 homeruns
Thanks for the thoughtful and objective analysis, Kyle. Your final score seems about right to me. Let's say Tom Ricketts agrees and terminates Hoyer. Any thoughts on who a good replacement would be? Also, how culpable is Carter Hawkins?
If they wanna call me, my phone number works 😂😂
Cant understand why edwards jr hasnt been called up
Keegan should close
Bote at 3rd
Morel benched
morel shouldn’t be benched, he just needs to DH and for right now, moved down in the lineup until he breaks out of this slump
@@user-gl4lg6gu5u morel has been in slump for the whole year. that is why ross never played him much
Jed is to blame for not signing more players to fill the glaring needs . Closer and a true DH and some middle relief . But you can’t not blame Counsell. He has us in the cellar. Basically the same team as Ross had in a much better situation and had them playing better . And Counsell is the highest paid manager in history . Are the players underachieving ? Yes . Who’s that fall on . The manager . Because they are across the board except for starting pitching . I never thought they should have gotten rid of Ross and I never understood the love for Counsell . He’s 1-5 in the playoffs .the one he won was a one off . That’s a horrible playoff record and last year they lost two home games in a best of three and were out of the playoffs . The Brewers . This team played better under Ross . Period. And yes it was Hoyer who did Ross dirty once Counsell was available . So yes it’s Hoyer to blame !
This is a great video my only criticism is that those were not all of his signings either, I definitely would grade at least some of the cubs top prospects he drafted. Like Horten would be +5 and Jordan Wicks would be +2. Shaw is too early to grade in my opinion to even count. I don't think Jeds the problem to be fair, he has built an incredible foundation that most teams would kill for in such short time since Rizzo/Byrant/Baez being traded. Not calling up the prospects is smart, its a lost season, no worth speeding up their service time especially with the great incentives if one wins ROY or another awards for more completive balance picks.
Why would you give Horton a +5 if he hasn't pitched at the major league level yet?
Cubs manager gives an interview on espn sunday night baseball. He gives the PCA resume. "He runs great, he hit a triple last night, he's an electric defender, and even though he did not catch the short fly ball he was in perfect position to gun the runner going from 2nd to 3rd. PCA has NOT been caught stealing yet. He's electric." ETC ETC. Not exact quotes but close. And yet? PCA only plays 2 days a week. That's how stupid Craig is.
100% the doing of the shameful little man. jed is practically a criminal for what he did to Rossy and our team. We were on the right track and even ahead of schedule. We were one of the very best teams in baseball for a big part of last season. Almost every position overperformed due to having a leader who genuinely cares about the team, the fans and the teams historic culture. We had the best locker room and the most positive vibe in all of baseball, maybe all of sports. David Ross is not a super young man, but he was a very young manager. He had us exactly where we needed to be and on an extreme upward trajectory. We were set for decades of stability and winning!! hoyer destroyed it all in one day and should hold the blame for it all, and should not be allowed to walk in the door of our building. Theo must be ashamed of himself for ever putting that creature in charge of our beloved Cubs. I'm so sad that so few of our fans stood up for our hero, who was a huge part of making our dreams come true once before and naturally accepted his next role as our leader. It's not too late. Hoyer should be banished and take his friend the Brewers manager with him. Due to the shameful and heartless timing as well, our great Manager is still available and I'm sure he would forgive the team and those who let him down. He's a real man and a real leader, which hoyer wouldn't recognize if he was punched in the mouth by one.
I’m not sure you can pass on grading Counsell but then grade Imanaga. Remove Shota from your grading and Jed is much worse. Overall, I agree with your assessment and conclusion, get him out of here.
This is the most arbitrary rating system. It is not objective in the least. And I agree with your end conclusion, but the method was pretty subjective.
How would you have done it differently?
Rate it on a statistical number other than whatever you’re felling at the time you made the video. If prospects can’t be judged in the short term then don’t include them
Yep, screw Jed Hoyer. Fire his ass. Bring Theo back. - Did you mention Simmons at SS?
I didn’t think that was a significant enough signing
I agree. But we paid that schlep $7-8 million.
Your grading system made no sense
Dear Mr. Ricketts, surely there is someone in either the Dodgers, Rays or Orioles (the three teams I associate with consistently strong farm systems) management that you can poach to replace the underperforming lump of a GM you're currently employing. Please do something soon to rectify this matter.
One other thing, do something to fix that g/d bullpen.
💯
Not gonna lie. Agreed with most of what you said. But not every deal can be worth -5 to 5. Mancini can’t be worth -5 as well as Kimbrel. He’s a good GM who’s built one of the best farms in all of the land
15:46
Lmao, not anymore! Imanaga gave up 10 ER to the lolmets and now has a higher ERA than Yamamoto. Also, wins are not a relevant metric for evaluating and comparing pitchers but even if they were, Imanaga only has 1 more win than Yamamoto so they’re essentially even. But okay, continue riding high on the bargain you got for an over performing 30 year old starter who’s sure to give up a lot more dingers as he regresses toward the mean.
He is still have a 2.86 era
@@JayRo-xp1nt He currently has a 2.96 ERA. Yamamoto currently has a 2.92 ERA.
A plus imanaga. Otherwise not so much.
How about letting Schwarber go for nothing.
That was before Jed took over
What role did Hoyer have in the Schwarber and Castellanos decisions? I also can’t forgive anyone involved in trading Cease (and Jimenez but that hasn’t hurt at all) for Jose Quintana! Another move that should be graded (like your argument of Mancini impact on Mervis) is keeping Mastrobuoni and Torrens on the starting 2023 team and not bringing Morel up until the middle of May. That was bonkers. Also loving on Mastrobuoni and leaving Bote in the minors for a year and a half is unexplainable. Don’t tell me one is left handed, it doesn’t matter where he stands if he can’t hit. Bote can, and was hot in spring training (5 HR). Now Tauchman (OF) goes down and they bring up Mastrobuoni again when they need offense. Hello? Nonsense.
I don’t like Hoyer but this list seems a bit too critical of him. In my opinion it is way too early to rate Taillon or Swansons contracts. Also why would Jed trade Wilson if he couldn’t find a suitor? Same with Happ. I wouldn’t be too critical of those non-trades because the return wasn’t going to be enough to warrant the trades in the first place. As it stands today, I agree that Mancini is the worst move he’s made. However Jed’s problem is there haven’t been a statement move in either direction. That is Jed’s problem. He hasn’t done anything that would wow you.
Overall I think what could get Jed in trouble is the moves he hasn’t made such as acquiring a star player or making a big trade. Again im excluding Wilson and Happ because it’s documented that there wasn’t anything great out there for Contreras, and Happ really wasn’t shopped.
I disagree, Hoyer has assembled a bad roster and has made some bad signings. He needs a new job
Wilson and Happ were all-stars that year. There had to be suitors
Good video Kyle. Jed has 1.5 years left on his contract. He’s going to have to earn an extension by making some phenomenal moves in that time span or I can’t see Ricketts renewing him
Hoyer put this disaster roster together. He's inept and if he isn't on a hot seat Ricketts has NO guts at all
How about paredes and candelario for Avila and Justin Wilson LOL zlOl Jed has gotta go
Lots of assumptions here
David Ross is dancing his ass off right now.
lol!
Jed is not the guy
Cubs getting screwed by ump in Friday game calling strikes balls for mets and balls strikes for cubs. Yes Jed sucks.
How would the Seiya signing affect your score of 15?
And also, part of the Cuas trade was based on his very low salary keeping the Cub under the luxury tax which is part of the tip-toe shuffle Jed has to live with until the team is seriously ready to win big, which then he can go over by prob 19mil w 2 proven bullpen arms during that particular season
I talked about Seiya
I must have blanked out... sorry, my bad... too much iced tea I think 😂
You covered so many moves so quickly and thoroughly you should prob be a stenographer
@@SetupManCubs I was thinking that all the talk before last season about Jed and Co doing a nice job putting a bullpen together each season was when the Robertson/Givens/Martin type crew were all 4-5mil dollars on the market... now almost every pretty good receiver seems to be 9-12mil and trying Boxberger/Fulmer for a combined 7mil didn't work w injuries... Jed will have to find a way to sign the guys he wants for the pen at Neris type salaries and fit it into their budget... that is his difficult challenge now if Cub want to hold onto leads and get to the next level...
DFA Hoyer!
😂
Very awesome breakdown 👌
Need a new GM. Sick of giving up these prospects for shit players
Fire Jed Hoyer
Hoyer became the de facto team president when Theo resigned on November 20, 2020. On December 3rd, Schwarber was non-tendered and became a free agent. On December 30th, Darvish and Caratini were dealt to the Padres for Davies and a group of 4 low-level prospects. Caissie is obviously promising but those two decisions are easily a combined -8. I'd rather have Caratini than both Amaya and Nido right now.
I don't know all the ends and outs of the CUBS front office but when the owner comes out during spring training and says he doesn't want to go over the luxury tax, I can't put all the blame on Jed. I think I could do a better job than him tho. 🤣
Hoyer did nothing but carry Theo's Jock. Awful GM in San Diego, awful here. He should have been fired when Theo left. Fire Hoyer and his staff NOW. The ONLY good thing about Hoyer is that he is a small minded, small market GM which is exactly what Ricketts wants.
On this date, last year, the Cubs were 35-38. I'm impressed they are where they are after all the injuries, this year, the hitters forgetting how to hit for over a month and NO ONE in the bullpen being consistant. MLB plays 2-10 times as many games as any other sport and to live and die with every game is ridiculous. Can it be frustrating? Of course it is, but take a second and just enjoy a game every now and then. Lastly, I'm tired of the "blame game". In 2024, there are 10 teams with payrolls over $200 million and 6 of them own records UNDER .500. Throwing money around doesn't equal wins.
If you told me about all of these injuries before the season started, I’d be okay with the record. But because they started so strong and have fallen off so fast, it hits a lot harder
They’ve blown 16 of 32 saves in 2024. That is the guys Hoyer decided would be his bullpen. Counsell had one and usually two elite closers in Milwaukee making his 7-8-9 innings easy to manage. This year 1-6 is easy because the starters have been good. The combination of the disappointing offense and the bad arms in the bullpen have made 7-8-9 a nightmare. Did he tell Counsell his elite bullpen is Alzolay and Neris when the season started? Grade the blown saves too.
@@JCar0106 Alzolay was solid and Neris was lights out in 2023. Merryweather and Leiter were also good. No one saw this coming. If you say you did, I'd have to call you a liar. Nothing Hendricks did last year would have pointed to his awful run thus far.
@@SetupManCubs I get that, but this team is right where they were last year and the track records of these players say their play thus far is NOT them and they will go on a run.
@@tinman67tn Fair opinion. My point was Counsell got to work with “elite” closers in Milwaukee and we see what Hoyer provided. Which of the Cubs closers are elite? Like Knebel or Hader or Williams level elite, like Milwaukee has run out for the last 8 years in a row? Ben Brown is the closest pitcher they have that could be an elite closer. Maybe with Hendricks pitching better when Brown is back he can be tried there, although I’m sure he wants to be a starter. Unfortunately the Cubs have to acquire closers because they can’t identify or develop talent at that position.
I don’t want Jed to get fired but I would much rather see Jed, Carter, and Tom alike change things and like you said in your interview with Brett Taylor the front office likely taking a play out of the Phillies playbook and more or less get the job done by making the “right” moves with addition by subtraction and with Jed I’d give him a solid C- because he’s made some bad moves prior to this season but has also made some good ones but hopefully this trade deadline and later in the offseason can prove us wrong when the front office some moves
Jed needs to go far far away
I would hire Rick Hahn. I would have hired Rick Hahn instead of Theo.
Jed gets a 19 from me
Pretty close
Jed is a yes-man. His job is safe.
I like what he's done with the minor league system, but he's handed out several really bad contracts at the major league level. The team is garbage, and until the prospects start producing at the ML level, they're just hypotheticals. If they don't develop, he should probably get fired. He's got to be on fairly thin ice already.
I would sacrifice my third born son for Theo to come back! I only have one son though so that may be a problem. Everyone needs to CALM DOWN! We aren't even half way through the season yet and we aren't in the strongest division in baseball. One good streak and we are back in contention. Now if we are under 500 by the end of August then we can start calling for Jed's head! That's fun to say, Jesus head. Its like maybe baby!
Get rid of consoul he sucks
He should be fired
