    Truly, this is the golden age for guitar amps - both boutique and mass produced.

    • @carl-ok9gn
      @carl-ok9gn 5 лет назад

      only in a sense. this is the golden age of being ripped off for amps. the technology to make amps has gotten way better and the components have all gotten better. however, guitar amp makers continue to jack up the prices and people buy them not even thinking about it.

    • @sassycat
      @sassycat 5 лет назад

      @@carl-ok9gn - that's a fair point, there's not a Harley Benton amp maker from China or Indonesia that readily comes to mind. Where are those reliably made amps at?

    • @carl-ok9gn
      @carl-ok9gn 5 лет назад

      @@sassycat the reliably made amps youre talking about are small home shops. and they're using antiquated parts. i'm saying that's not at all even close to necessary. a modern radio or stereo amp is far more reliable than an old tube style. regardless, your response illustrates that you didn't comprehend my point. i'm saying that amps are all overpriced. regardless of where they're made and regardless of how they're made. it's an enormous scam. but similar to audiophiles, snobby guitarists buy into it for no objective reason. blind tests even confirm boutique amps do not sound better in anyway to even some solid state amps. it's a bunch of amateur or hobby musicians justifying paying out the ass for things by way of snobbery.

    • @sassycat
      @sassycat 5 лет назад +2

      @@carl-ok9gn - please understand, I have nothing against solid state amps. MY point is that to my eyes there has never been a time where so many widely and varied amplifier makers have presented such a wide array of different voicing options to the guitar playing consumer.
      Granted, there seem to be an over-abundance of companies trying to sell you their version of the same sound, but then there are those companies who give you a specific option, whether it's a quality modeling amp or a niche tube sound like the Chris Stapleton reissue or the Henry SRT+. I will agree to your point that there is a class of tone snobbery individuals who shit on anything that doesn't meet their artificially set standards, but that's not me. My apologies for not being more precise with my earlier wording.

      @profd65 4 года назад +3

      @@carl-ok9gn No, this is the of the Golden Age of douchebags like you thinking you should be able to buy everything for next to nothing, and WHINING because you can't. Meanwhile, you probably make $30/hr yourself.* And so what your complaining really means is that you think you're the only person entitled to make a decent living, and are outraged when someone else tries to.

    The Doug and Pat show made that Vox AC10 SRT even more desirable. The tones they get with a 58 Gold top and that Vox screams 60’s blues rock. The Alnico Silver Celestion 12’s are a big part of the sound too. This Henry SRT fixes the trem and god awful Vox reverb.
    A 2 x12” cab loaded with good Alnico speakers, like the Weber Silver Bell, would be so much more fitting. And yes, RECTIFIER TUBES MATTER. If you want that classic sound and feel, the easiest way is to use them. Especially in amps designed to use low current capacity rectifiers like the 5Y3, 6X4 or EZ81/6CA4.

      @Henryamps 5 лет назад +1

      Matt Fields thanks Matt! We actually tried the alnico Silver bell speakers first, but found the WGS Blackhawk Alnico suited our amp a bit better and came closer to the original t1088 Vox celestions that D&P have. Ironically, the ceramic Silver Bell is also a great fit, but a little brighter and more present in the upper mids.

    • @matthewf1979
      @matthewf1979 5 лет назад +1

      J.P. Henry thank you for building this thing. I still have plans to completely 100% clone the amp. Did you use a standard Hammond/Fender reverb circuit? I’ve seen the “Reverb tank” Thomas used for these amps, no way you copied that.I ll have to take your word for the speakers. I’ve yet to play a SRT. I just know the real deal Silver Bell Celestions are killer for AC15’s and every AC10 I’ve seen. Of course, speakers and tone are subjective.
      Thanks again and I hope you’re successful with this amp!

      @@matthewf1979 thanks again Matt! Our reverb is based on the trad. Fender style but we did a few little tweaks to suit this circuit design, and based it around a single tube.

    Also, you used a Danelectro distortion pedal in the review. Have you tried out their new Breakdown pedal? I bet it would sound great with that amp.

    Doesn't sound anywhere near as good as the real thing(check out the Doug and Pat show)
    its basically just a 5e3 using el84 output tubes an unusual power node design and extra gain stage with a funky reverb.

  • @MrAnders1976
    @MrAnders1976 5 лет назад

    10 watt through a 12" speaker (The Blackhawk is pretty efficient) will not work for me in a loud club environment. My experience says that with an efficient single 12" speaker you need 30W of clean power is you want to have any loud clean notes coming through. This equates to a pair of EL34/6l6 or a quad of EL84s or a solid state amp with 60W of power like the Orange crush 60 pro.
    You can push a pair of EL84 and 15W of clean power though a 4x12 cab and it will be loud enough,, but as each speaker sees roughly 4W of clean power you will not get any tight hard hitting low tones. .. You will need at least a 50W tube head and a good output transformer to keep a 4x12 tight with some bottom end and a fast response. ..
