    Hi Paul, Hi Kyle. I AM an audiophile of sorts. I graduated from UCSD with a B.A. in ICAM; Basically a music technology degree. With the compressor, you're not adding an "amount" to the signal, like when adding the other effects like chorus or delay. The knob for the compressor is setting the threshold in decibels for when the compressor is activated. If sound coming into the line is above that set threshold, the compressor is activated and compresses the signal. How much it is compressed is dependent upon the compression ratio you choose. If you need a sound guy to help you set up, answer audio tech questions, or just help you get familiarized, I'd love to help you guys. I live just outside LA, Ventura County, and all I would want in return is a thumbscrew T-shirt :P haha. Anyway, have fun with the new gear and the fun new effects. Can't wait to see you use it on the next Awesome Hardware. Keep up the great work guys. I'm gonna build my own computer for music production soon because of your channels.

      Computer-Aided Manufacturing in the music industry, not sure what your major is, but you got some degree i guess.
      pulse-code modulation, PCM sound, a codec to encode sound! You only need the same codec running to reproduce, to do the encoding to analog signals. It's kind of easy, the less compression the better, lossless streams work the best, but is your player able to reproduce it again, or does it go back to a less good ratio, because your player can't play > 19k2 steams, there the tresh hold comes, when it's producing a less good analog signal then the source is.
      So try to decode the stream to the original signal again, too highest rate as possible that your DAC can reproduce, the less compression the better! You don't need a sound guy at all here, just basic knowledge about codecs enough here!
      Keep the signal on the original format, the decoding DAC in the last step of the process, in the headset or DAC to the speaker set, some speakers can do that job too, inducing a DAC in the speaker set. You don't need any soundcards for that, onboard codes are the best these days!

    Love these types of videos! Please do more of them as you get new stuff. Wouldn’t of minded an extra 5 minutes, or even more, of you playing around with it. Pure hardware videos can get stale after awhile, these always break them up enough to keep things really interesting.
    The behind the scene type of hardware that allow for all the magic to happen always seem really interesting. It’s like Linus’s fascination with servers. Am I ever going to have full server rack full of high-end commercial hardware that I could store and edit hundreds of hours of 8K video on? No. Do I absolutely love watching his videos on them? YASSSSS

    • @linusx84
      @linusx84 6 лет назад

      exactly how i would see it - things we wouldnt buy ourself since we dont have any use for it
      but its fun to see how your (Paul, Kyle, Linus,etc.) setup works and runs
      i think thats even more fun than having the 10th. review of a 1080 ti or just another AIO Cooler because after benchmarking most of the stuff lands on some shelf - but tech like the Yamahasoundboard/mixer is something we are experiencing regularly on your channel and its fun to know which tech u r using to run your channel (even all the kinks and probs u got with it - probably even a possible new segment: 'tech i use that drives me nuts ;)' )
      so keep on doing these kind of 'random' tech videos because technophiles are always curious :)

  • @falsekingallant6343
    @falsekingallant6343 7 лет назад

    compression kinda like volume normalization (compression kinda sacrifices clarity of whatever sound), windows used to have this option available in the sound control panel. TVs need this piece of tech tbh, for those late night movie nights when we don't want to be suddenly startled by a very loud SFX out of nowhere. regular broadcasting is guilty of this too, where ads might be super loud but the main show is significantly quieter.

    Hello. I've used the MG10XU for announcing football & soccer(stadium use). I always press down/on the pad/26db button just below the XLR insert for the microphone(far left). If in the pad/up position, it seems to pick up too much surrounding sound. When pushed in (26db), less sound goes into the mic. I'm trying to use the board now for online video (think youtube), production as I'm a teacher forced to work from home. Do you have a better explanation of this button? Thank you in advance,

    Helpful video! Thank you: I hope you can help with a problem I am having with a mixer in this series: I am not getting audio to go from MG16XU audio mixer to my computer. What am I doing wrong? Here is what I am doing: I am using the MG16XU to feed my dedicated streaming computer's OBS studio. (My computer has an i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20Ghz, 16GB RAM [soon to be 32GB], 64-bit OS NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and 1TB HD.) I downloaded and installed Yamaha's Steinberg USB driver V1.9.10-2 for Win 10/8.1/7(SP1) (32bit/64bit). I have a USB A/B 2.0 cable going from the mixer to my computer. (In accordance with the guidance from the manufacturers manual, I am using a USB 2.0 cable instead of a 3.0.) I have tried connecting the cable to the computer's USB 2.0 input and the USB 3.0 input. In both cases, my computer recognizes the MG-XU, and in the device manager I set it as the default. The MG-XU mixer’s level meter displays appropriate levels, and I hear audio via headset in the mixer’s RCA Monitor Out. Lastly, I have tried setting the LINE / USB to either setting to no avail. Despite my effort, I am not able to transmit audio via USB to my computer for OBS. Again, what am I doing wrong? Thanks, Tom Jr.

    Does the eliminate the need for a dac/amp to drive a high ohm headphones? I was planning on getting a Mayflower arc dac/amp (the replacement of the O2) to drive my high resistance headphones, and then I started looking for a mixing board to use for RUclips and Twitch so if this can eliminate the need for the Arc then it would basically pay for itself there.

    Now Sweetwater will call you 10000000 times and send you those catalogs ad nauseam. Anyway, the MG10XU is pretty nice...at least it has been for me. Running AT2020's through it I have to crank the gain up more than I expected would be necessary. It took me a while to accept that. I kept trying to find solutions to get a stronger signal, but after I just got used to cranking the gain and line level (to around 75% each) it's all been fine. I was concerned about long-term effects, but that doesn't seem to be an issue.

    Hey Paul have you though about getting a shotgun/hypercardiod mic instead of using the Monoprice ones? They would do a way better job at picking you up since you keep them out of frame and away from your mouth. Some good ones that I can recommend with my solid but lacking experience are the Rode NTG 1 and the Deity S-mic , they would pick up less noise and echo from your Studio and would sound more full at that distance. Love your content, keep up the good work!

    I ended up buying this mixer based the demo, but it fucked up after like 6 months. My inputs went super quiet, so I cranked em up (for mic while I was gaming/broadcasting), then after a while it started cutting in and out, now I have no signal from any of my inputs. Not sure what the problem is, but it wasn't worth fucking around with so I just bought a traditional audio interface and have had no troubles.

    You could have used Reaper's free VST plugins, but you could have done a lot worse than the MG10XU. Yamaha's pre-amps are my favorite. I've got the MG16XU myself.

    at 4:30.... lol it´s an analog mixing desk. it doesn't´t have DACs over ADCs... But what you´re trying to say @paulshardware is right: it´s probably got much better pre-amps ;)

    yes it does sound much better but i had to listen to this and not look at the screen while i listened to hear the difference. Subtle, at first but after a second listen it DOES SOUND MUCH BETTER. For the price difference... WHY NOT?!

    Different but still good. I’m sure other viewers will get something out of this too. The evil overlord voice should be used when introducing Wicked news like Intel announced “We don’t believe our users should be able to overclock our CPUs without paying for a Premium unlocked processor” it would add that extra evil flair

    I hook it up to my Yamaha HS8 with my MG10XU. Put the out line as "MG-XU". Still no sound. Is there like a button am I supposed to click on the Mixer for the audio to come to the speakers?

    Any1 doing voice over & budget allows, look into the Aphex Channel or the older version Aphex 230 (on the used market). You get alot of signal processing in 1U rack space. #Sweetwater is one of the better pro audio gear dealers.

    Compressors, sound boards, equalizers, fxs, interfaces, converters, sound cards. Playing with these things with more cost sometimes does not beat a good source set up. Don't listen everything from those viewers. Or at least take a pinch of salt with it. For simple broadcasting you don't really need a lot of stuff and could have saved unnecessary costs.

    You so need to use the demon sound for intros for AH. But make it a bit better than fires.. And stuff.. That was so a Kyle line. C'mon Paul, no more Kyleisms. Next thing you know, you will be opening bottles of beer towards yourself and blinding urself with the Cork 😆😆

    Probably wont see this but if you can get your hands on the new Coffee Lake series, can you do a review on the I3 8350k and the I5 8400? Building a PC right now and i plan to use one of them but I don't know which would be better as i want to start video editing.

    Well, I completely misunderstood what the hell USB meant on this mixer. I have a Blue Yeti microphone and I thought that you hooked the mixer directly to the usb port of the microphone to get the audio to the mixer from the mic. Apparently I was wrong and at this point I'm a little freaking confused. What the hell good is USB on a mixer if it's not to plug directly to a USB microphone?

    I don't know much, is it possible to buy a single or double channel hardware EQ. And use that to mix (add the hardware tone character) all channels of a song in a daw. One channel or instrument at a time. And then on the master mix use it also.
    And then can I repeat this type of process with other analog equipment like compressor or delays. I'm thinking how much is possible to do with cheapest options. more creativity less money

    Ok. I wish I could have saved you money there’s really good compressors that would have easily been patched in to the front of the mixer or converter. Some analogue devices hit the sweet spot. There is such a thing as too transparent. In music I’d prefer to get multiple inputs and compression can be used before or after in mastering. In podcasts I’d compress and use eq for correcting any sound.

    Do you find the serration useful on that knife? I got the straight one and just wondered if i am missing out. Now you have a compressor you need to normalize your volume to 23LUFS.
