The team wouldve been better off trading for a 5 million top 6 winger who actually produces like it, or going after a different free agent. Going after the most hyped free agents usually results in overpayment, and the deals on the table really are that.

      There’s internal choices for 3 C, Mcloed, I wouldn’t be surprised at the prospect of the line being brought up as a unit in Marody-McLoed-Benson, they were the hottest line in The Whole AHL last season. We need a shut down lid to take Larson the poor baby’s spot. We have some good pieces on D so sign Barry and a replacement for Larson. With our current d situation with bear and bouchard.. we might need to say goodbye to barrie and get savard for a more defensive defenseman type who could play with keith. There is a couple good options. We need one that could kill penalties. Bear and bouchard defensively? Eh..

      I really hope benson or marody takes the next step this season. Benson is a fan favorite but he hasn't had the speed like mcleod has.
      I heard reports that oilers are in on that ullmark guy and potentially even kuemper. I would love either option for like 4 or 5 million for a couple years.. for 8 would be a questionable move hahaha. I can’t wait for rookie camp, Lavoie is close, Savoie is another interesting player who needs to pass the eye test, Blumel’s coming across the pond to Condors, Benson progressed massively last year, he’s worked of his skating, been physical and scores. Marody, Benson and McLoad a forth line with scoring potential, they were incredible in the minors, it’s not unheard of to promote the whole line to the big team. I think they saw that and may try it, especially early in camp. Hopefully Hyman signs, Benson and Marley sign, Skinner too took a major step this past year, it was fun to watch him. When he first got got back after his first game with the Oil, he dropped a number of games then went on a goon run to the conference final becoming ‘champs. Nemilinen looked real good and. He’s got a wing span too lol! I’m hoping some of the kids make big strides during the rookie camp, into the main camp and get a game or two, give them a taste of the bigs and send them down. Dang Steve...a month ago you were crying over the idea of losing Hyman over not being able to fit his salary request within the Leaf budget. Now you are judging another team for signing him, a team that actually does have the cap space.
    Dubas it has been said offered Hyman 8yrs at 4m per. You'd have been ok with that I bet. So the Oilers offer him a million more (because they can) and you get all wiggy about it?
    You really should just focus on your inept Leafs and their woes before even considering judging other teams and what they are doing. Frankly, your opinions on how to win, or what it takes to win mean absolutely nothing until YOU have actually experienced and/or witnessed your own team winning.
    Finally, 8 years at 5 million is definitely an over-pay for Hyman. My bet is that he will help considerably over the next 4 years and possibly become a big piece in getting the Oilers to the finals again (would be the 8th time in 40 years btw) and really, isn't that what it's all about? Oh, you don't know that feeling? Perhaps trading your jersey for a Kraken jersey will help because they will be in the finals long before your Leafs will.

    Oilers management has looked so bad for so long... the fact they havent had a good goalie that isnt 70 years old for years and refuse to address it is just laughable. They finally looked like they had a good defensive core and top 4 going and then exposed Larsson in order to keep ancient Keith... From Holland's comments and other reporting it seems clear that Larsson wanted out, BUT that in itself is a failure of the team to keep an important player happy. Hyman at 29 with a long and recent injury history along with a hard work playstyle and very unimpressive career stats outside of last year...just isnt worth 5 million for 8 years or 5.5 for 7... he is going to break down long before thats over. He will play hard and be popular in the locker room etc, but thats just too much money wasted.

      @geebster. 2 года назад

      @@algrundau9441 Smith had his second best career year, and his best season since 2011 at age 39. He absolutely was good, not a top 5 or top 10 but good. 16th HDSV% and HDGSAA, 11th in GSAA, and 12th and 17th in SV% and GAA respectively. Those are good numbers sure, but do you think when its his best season in 9 years following 2 pretty horrible seasons statistically that he will continue at that level for 2 more years at ages 40 and 41? 2 million is great and he played well, but at some point the team needed to have gotten a young goalie that actually has a future on the team. It shouldve been a top priority and hopefully this offseason is when they finally get one. You dont bet on old players to stay healthy and contribute at career high levels into their 40s.
      As for Larsson, there is a reason the fan base and media have been furious about losing him for nothing. You dont replace a rugged right sided D that easily and the guy was a warrior for the team. Keith is an upgrade for the 2nd pairing LHD but at 5.5 million and his age thats an absolute waste of cap space given the lack of retention. For people arguing that Keith is better than Jones therefore its a good deal, you CAN upgrade a team and it be a bad move. If you sign Landeskog for 12 million your top line is definitely better but itd be a bad move as you have now wasted money that couldve made the team deeper. I dont think any team would objectively prefer a 39 year old LD Keith making 5.5 million over a 29 year old RD Larsson making 4. Replacing LD is WAY easier than RD, and now the team has a gaping hole they will probably have to pay more than 4 mil to fill. If the Hawks retained salary this is a different conversation.
      Given the mismanagement of the cap space Holland now has 9 million left to sign 2 right sided defensemen, another goalie, and multiple forwards. If they get Hyman at 5 (which is lower than all the rumours), then even with a Neal buyout they only have 7.8 to get 2 right sided D and multiple forwards to replace or sign Chiasson, Khaira, Russell, Yamamoto, Kahun (rumor is Kahun and Khaira wont be qualified but I included them anyways). If they buy out Koskinen instead of Neal they have even less money than that.

    Nah. That weak division should get em a playoff birth but that's it. Edmonton is a worse version of Toronto. Poorer defense and goaltending. One line instead of 2.

    When are some of the Oiler fans, or imitations thereof going to support the team? Being an armchair quarterback is nice but totally unrealistic. Most of those who don’t appreciate Ken Holland and his staff work, don’t have a clue of what is involved is even signing a player. Let alone composing a team. We all have wish lists and I can appreciate that, but so much comes into play to have a good / great player sign, and without selling out the assets. I think you would all do well and try to find something positive, support the new players, and staff. I know your all entitled to opinions, but creating a toxic environment for staff and players doesn’t do well for the franchise. We had a lot of success here, but it can’t be every year. Would have loved to keep Larsson and Berry resign, would love to have Klefbaum, Hynman will be a good fit and good value, no denying we need one or two top 6 forwards, but the cost would be too great..don’t kid yourself, this staff works tirelessly and wants to win the cup too, and they don’t have a magic wand. Time for some players to step up, follow their leaders in the off-season so they can be better performers. And finally, in a player like Duncan Keith, you cannot place a value on his experience, what he will contribute on and off the ice. Playing to each and everyone’s capability is what produces a winning team and attitude..that should also come from the fans.

      They turned Hall into 5 years of Adam Larsson. 3 playoffs appearances including a series win after a decade of missing the playoffs and he was a huge part of that. He was a big part of their leadership group. The fan base is justifiably upset he didn’t resign.

      @@Ace96x10 well sooner or later that happens to every player every traded , but yes perhaps a bit too soon for the hall trade to be left with nothing. I don’t think it was mgmts fault in this instance however. Larsson earned his right to go where he wanted , and he wanted a change of scenery for personal reasons that mgmt had no control over.
      Larsson did get them extra cap space as well though and it’s difficult to assess how far that went and how it was utilised but I’m sure it helped when signing mcdavid to a 100 million dollar contract.
      Regardless I will miss seeing Larsson in an oilers uniform.

      If it gets him at a lower AAV (usually the case when a player is seeking a max term which Hyman and his agent have apparently set as their goal) then yeah......a sign and trade makes sense. And make no mistake.......if a sign and trade happens we’re not talking the Leafs getting some top prospect coming back.......would likely be some picks/futures
      Hyman would likely easily get over $6M from a few teams if he was willing to do a 4 year deal......but he wants the security of term
