Attended a Glenfiddich tasting that featured Hendricks at the end. They said the cucumber takes some fire out. The host told a story of ladies getting together drinking bathtub gin the guise of high tea, hence the cucumber sandwiches often served with tea. Ladies could chase a drink of “tea” with a bite of cucumber sandwich and not wince.

First time gin drinker here, glad i went with beefeater as my first ever bottle of gin. Cucumber doesn't sound like a lot of fun for me personally. However, i must say that bottle of Hendrick's is one of the coolest bottles ever, I was very much drawn to it beckoning me from the shelf. It would look right at home in an alchemist's laboratory. I might buy one some time in the future just because the bottle is so cool. (The beefeater is fantastic, for what its worth from a novice)

@@nononsensegindrinking5152 Bobby, I went to the cheap liquor store the other day and picked up a half-pint of Heaven Hill Gin. It no longer tastes like cucumber. It tastes like really rough vodka, with added extracts of juniper, licorice, and lemon. The flavors don't even make it to the back of the tongue! I doubt any of them were added in the distilling process. Fit only for an industrial solvent.

It was about time a true scientist accepted the challenge to properly review the Hendrick's. And I couldn't agree more! When Hendrick's Gin was released and first became available in Europe I totally fell for their storytelling. I believed that they decided to not be London Dry Gin because their Gin-making process is actually more complex. And for a while I enjoyed trading in the lime for a slice of cucumber. Almost 20 years later, I am struggling with the taste of Hendrick's. For what drinks are you using Hendrick's? The lack of juniper and this pronounced rose and cucumber taste may be considered "signature" - but they're both very distracting, too. I prefer a lime in my Gin & Tonic and the cucumber doesn't belong in there. I am not willing to learn or create lots of new salad/vegetable Gin drinks and give up on the classic Gin drinks I like so much. Unfortunately I am not a huge fan of the Negroni. In there the cucumber probably doesn't matter as much. If Gin was a liquor you could enjoy straight it probably would be another topic. The price for a bottle was down to 25€ the other day, but I still didn't buy it. Because I don't know what for. Yes, it has 44%, which is great. But I may as well buy a bottle of Tanqueray which is a London Dry Gin at 47%, has a very classic Gin taste and sells for 20€/liter.

I’m a whiskey drinker and I never liked gin. Someone introduced Hendricks to me since whiskey is a bit heavy for summer (and I don’t care much for beer or the seltzer craze). Hendricks is the only gin that I actually like! They have some unique limited releases too.

Apples to oranges. Gin is not something you drink neat like whiskey. I find Hendricks a clean subtle gin with less juniper on the front & back. Makes an easy drinkable gin & tonic.

I hate it, our drinks aren't even that hard, but we are the most complex drinkers. I drink whiskey at home, Hendricks, tonic, lime, with a splash of not ever trusting anyone ever in public.

How come you put Hendricks as one of the 5 Gins that never let you down in the beginners guide video and now you don’t seem to like it at all? I am confused. 🤪

    • @nononsensegindrinking5152

      Hey Tobiaspilich1988
A very good point. I can see that my wording is a bit misleading so thank you for pointing it out.
I wanted to give people a broad spectrum of gins to start off on their gin journey and because Hendricks is so well know and readily available I felt that I should include it in my beginners guide, despite not really liking it myself. I do explain in the beginners guide that I am not a fan of cucumber but lots people disagree with me on that and I didn’t want to completely alienate them from something that they might otherwise enjoy.
Thanks again for raising the point with me though. It’s always good to be pulled up when I get something wrong or am not clear. It helps me to be better 😊👍
      All the best
      Bobby

@@nononsensegindrinking5152 Funnily enough, I think I bought my bottle of Hendricks in large part due to that video (and an article I read with a similar take.) Thankfully, I do find it a good drink, so I've been enjoying myself. When I tried gin as a much younger man (about 25 years ago) it felt like sucking on a Christmas wreath, and this is certainly not that. I do plan to try something a bit more standard for my next one, though.

IMO Hendricks is not meant to be mixed .. at least not with tonic. it is either a stand alone gin or has to be mixed with something sweeter.

  • @HunterMann

I don’t quite understand why you did your tasting the way you did. If you want to be fair and objective and give it an honest try you should ship some pure jam not adding tonic water or whatever that was in the soda bottle. That’s like trying expensive tequila for the first time and adding a bunch of lime and salt before you even taste it or adding some kind of Jimmy Buffett Margaritaville margarita mix or something.
I wish you do this tasting over and just try the gym straight. Or maybe shake it gently with ice and strain it. I actually think it’s a very good dream but I would never make a gin and tonic with it. I buy standard Bombay gin If I’m mixing

      Hi Mats Berg!
Thanks very much for your comment and for subscribing. Glad to hear that you agree with me on this one. As I said in my video, it is quite a controversial view as Hendrick's is such a popular gin, but I vow to be honest in my reviews, even if it means speaking out against the 'big boys' of the gin world!
Looking forward to your views on future videos :-)

    • @Ghostrider264
      @Ghostrider264 5 лет назад

Thank you. I can't really understand why Hendricks is so popular. Its drinkable without the cucumber and pepper but not much more than that. One question though: What happen to your review of Whitley Neill Rhubarb & Ginger Gin? I saw it yesterday I think, but is gone today. Your review was very good and WN Rhub & Ginger gin happens to be among my very favorites. I kindly ask you to reconsider and post it.

Hi Mats, I've changed my mind about the re-doing the Whitley Neill Rhubarb and Ginger. I watched back the original video and it has something really nice little moments in that would be impossible to recreate so i think I am going to leave it as it is, even with the low resolution. I really appreciate your input though. looking forward to hearing from you again soon! :-)

I think this video is more like a personal opinion rather than a review. I didn’t hear anything about the gin but “I don’t like it”. Maybe you could have included a reference to the other ingredients (not just rose and cucumber), how to prepare a cocktail with it, the quality/price of the alcohol as a reference, and a more objective information. I think it’s a great channel, but again this video it’s a bit far from a review. I’d rather named it as“my personal opinion on Hendricks gin”.
