Here's the 3 you need to know (IMHO)
Tanqueray - a very neutral gin. Has the basic botanicals: Juniper, coriander, angelica root, and liquorice. The "Pine" note that defines most gins is the Juniper. A Martini classic with an Olive
Beefeater - A personal fave. Botanicals: Same as Tanqueray plus almonds, orris root, seville oranges, and lemon peel. As the video says, nice citrus notes. Martini with an Olive or lemon zest
Hendrick's - a cucumber gin. Botanicals: Think of Beefeater plus caraway, chamomile, cubeb berry, elderflower, yarrow, and an infusion of rose petal and cucumber.
Martini with a cucumber, lemon zest, or cocktail onion (for a Gibson).
Honourable mention to Bombay Sapphire for a bit of earthier, peppery flair.
Not knocking the rest of the gins, but these are my go-tos.
Pro-tip: if you ask for a specific gin in a bar, they'll likely charge you a premium. Just ask what's on "the rail", it's probably Beefeater or Tanqueray (at least where I live)

    • @jaydarl2
      @jaydarl2 4 года назад +4

Beefeater and Tanqueray are your rails. I'm jealous! The best I've seen are Gordon's and Seagram's. At the bars I frequent the rail gin is generally the bottom shelf brand, Skol. Maybe I need to go to better bars.

    • @troyhiscock4407

@@jaydarl2 I never thought about it until you mentioned it. I've seen Gordon's on the rail, but can't recall Seagram's. There may be a bit of selection bias going on as well; I don't order martinis from places that look like they'll just throw them together..those places I'm usually happy enough with a pint : )

My first taste of Gin was Bombay Sapphire, neat straight from the bottle as I was raiding my parent's liquor cabinet. My brother and I both agreed at the time that it was perhaps the worst alcohol we'd ever tried. Years later, after getting tired of nothing but vodka and shitty rum I decided to try Gin. I began with Gray's Peak, which though I didn't feel it was anything special, was thrilled to find it was far more enjoyable to me than the Bombay Sapphire. I then tried Beef Eater and my god was that a treat. Beef Eater made me decide that Gin was something well worth getting into. I'm now on my third Gin which is Aviation though I find it a pleasant drink to sip, I miss many of the elements of a more traditional gin such as Beefeater. I'm thinking that next I will try either Hampstead or Tanqueray.

Great channel. Very informative and with a good delivery. I've never seen nor heard of Hampstead so, thank you, I'm going to look for it. I agree with you on Beefeater, it's my always go to Gin. I can't say that I feel the same way about Tanqueray, I find the juniper notes to be a little overwhelming. I've had Hendricks and that I can agree on. That it being infused with cucumber well, let's just say that it can make for a horrendous dry martini.

Good introduction to gin. In the last couple of years I've got through Gordons, Greenhalls, Bombay Sapphire and currently Tanquerary which I think is the most floral and would win my vote. Seems like I need to give Beefeater a go and btw this is the first, and last time I've ever smashed a man's subscribed button :-)

I just looked this up. Hampstead gin is being made in my home state in Germany :) I just got a bottle from Lidl and I have to agree, for the price it's a really nice Gin. Citrus is dominant, nothing super fancy, but I have definitely had more expensive gins for double the price or more which smelled and tasted like rubbing alcohol in comparison. Nice find :)

So glad I found you. I've been intrigued by gin ever since I started cooking with juniper berries, and just bought my first bottle. Unfortunately, the first bottle I bought was a Bombay Sapphire, lol - which I agree (from reviewing your other videos) has a certain unpleasant chemical quality to its taste ( I was just so attracted to the beautiful advertisements and glorious blue bottles). Gonna go with a Beefeater or Tanqueray next time. Thanks, sir!

So fun. There are so many different gins and so many different tastes in gin. I personally can't stand Tanqueray and am not very fond of Beefeater either. I really like Hendrick's, Empress 1908 (and that one is fun in tonic), Nolet's, Aviation, and St. George. That's what's great about being a gin drinker, so many choices and so much variety in those choices.

Hey Bobby. I’m from the U. S. I retired in December, so obviously I’m an old guy. I’ve never been a gin drinker, I’ve hardly been a liquor drinker. But, I wanted to try different things so I picked up a gin, Bombay Sapphire. Not being a gin drinker, I liked it. Then I found you and subscribed (I smashed that button). I went to Tanqueray. It was much better. I saw your review of Hendricks, so I tried it and agreed, sort of like perfume was added to it with cucumber. I’ve tried New Amsterdam. I liked it. Very crisp and clean. Next is Beefeaters. Looking forward to it. I haven’t found Sipsmith. But I’m looking. I really appreciate your channel, keep going. PS Fever Tree is the best tonic, as you said.

Bobby I am fairly new to Gin and am I ever having a blast!!! You are right on that if there was one Gin to hold on to if I could only have one - it would now be Beefeater - huge competition for me with Tanqueray for that one Gin I'd choose if I could have only one Gin from here on in. I do like Hendrick's, I have one had the one you are featuring today, and not the other Hendrick's releases - one is very new. I am in Vancouver, Canada and have paid $80.00 and $100.00 for a well known, superb Gin - excellent reputation and reviews - but hey, I can pay much less - the Beefeater and the Tanqueray - bottle sizes you have here - are both $23.95 pretty much anywhere - government or private spirit and wine stores. I am enjoying Martinis, very dry and I do like a strong punch of Juniper. A citrus element is also something I love and it's lovely to taste that in the Beefeater. The Tanqueray is limited to 4 botanicals - I think! I better so check!! This video is so instructive and hugely entertaining! You have terrific knowledge and humour!! I am enjoying your videos very much!! Cheers!!! 🙂

I have only been into gin for less than a year and have purchased many different brands from both supermarkets and liquor stores - have never purchased Beefeater because of the low price but will be giving it a go - Really like Hendricks but it is around $50 here - anyway, Gin is competing nicely with my go to of Grand Marnier
I do use FeverTree as Schweppes is basically corn syrup in the states - got fooled by the yellow label for the lemon FeverTree (which is close to the color of the regular bottle) which i found "yucky" - accidentally bought the "light" version too which i'm almost afraid to try - definitely checking the labels more carefully now

Hi Bobby! Just came across your channel today I am loving it. Can you consider making a video about how to better appreciate/taste gins?
Since in my case, as long as it is a reasonably good gin, they all taste kind of the same to me. (With the exception of Hendrick's, that has a strong floral note. And gordon's, which smells like water compared to the rest I have tried.)
For example, tanqueray/bombay sapphire/beefeater taste similar unless I compare them side by side. When mixed in drinks, I can't distinguish them.

    • @nononsensegindrinking5152
      @nononsensegindrinking5152  4 года назад

      Hi GuYuan Yu,
Welcome to my channel! Thanks for the comment. What a very interesting question. It's all about finding the right balance for you. Personally, with neat gin agree with you, I find many quite similar. With mixers it's important to to put too much. A good tonic should release the flavours from the gin.
A lot of gin tasters drink neat gin but with a tiny bit of water in as that too releases the flavours of the gin. The best advice I can give is to have a play around and see what works best for you. In the meantime, I shall definitely put this on my list of videos
      👍

For some reason, being a whiskey and rum drinker, I find gin to be too... Weird tasting.. I've had Bombay Sapphire and Beefeater only till date. And both when I've had them neat or with some lemon juice, tasted funky. The gin and tonic I had in bars were super awesome. Infact, the cocktails didn't feel like they had any alcohol in them at all. I could've gulped it all down in one go. But when I make it at home - with lemon juice and sugar and some soda, the result isn't the same.
Plus it's hars to get tonic water easily in India where I live.

I'd like to know how "bottom-shelf" brands like Gordons, Gilbeys, Burnetts and Seagrams compare to something more standard like Tanqueray and Bombay! Am I missing out by buying a London Dry style Gin from Gillbey's brand which is 1/2 the price of the Bombay brand?

l am looking for gin that resemble very much like Sir Robert Burnett's Premium Strength London Dry Gin called white satin which was sweet in taste of juniper was cheaply available in Britains supermarket under £5 pounds for 35 cl bottle but now discontinued in 1990s which one would you recommend that matches to that taste, l known this was before your time. l don’t want to waste money trying out different bottles of gin perhaps u tube viewer can recommend.

OK, a UK and Eire guide to Gin... Stick to Beefeater or Tanqueray and you wont go far wrong. Beefeater 24 gives you a lot of bang for your buck... citrus with green or Chinese tea and of course cardamon and Juniper (it is a Gin after all). Try all variations of Beefeater and Tanqueray and find your go to Gin and your favorite Gin for special occasions.. you'll not be disappointed. ...for me, Tanqueray 10 is a perfect goto gin and Beefeater 24 is great for special occasions, or when you want to impress...

@@nononsensegindrinking5152 Feels like you took the most basic gins you could find.
Beefeater is a shitgin to be honest.
Hendricks is cool but everybody drinks that where I'm from so for me that gin is outdated.
tanqueray export strength is nice as well but I don't understand why you would choose that one before tanqueray 10 wich is more elegant and fresher.
And Fever-tree tonic is very nice indeed but I wouldn't use it for every gin you set up on your table. The point with tonic is to bring out the flavors from the gin.
But it's a nice review video

I totally see where you’re coming from. The video was meant to be a beginners guide so I chose what I feel are the entry level gins for someone who hasn’t tried gin before. I agree with you about the Tanqueray. I prefer the export strength. I suppose I wanted beginners to try these first before moving on to the really good stuff.
