An interesting thing with some gin, particularly craft/small batch gins, is "louche." That's where the essential oils that get distilled into the gin from the botanicals are present in enough volume (heavy flavor gins typically) that if you chill it, like having a martini or gin and tonic or even just gin on the rocks, it pulls the oils out of suspension and makes the drink cloudy. Doesn't really affect the flavor or anything a ton, but it can be slightly off-putting to some people.
My sister got me a gin infusion kit for Christmas in 2021 and I am still having fun with it mid-late 2022, I found out early on to start with a good base spirit (vodka) a go easy on the botanicals and herbs, and that putting them in a mortar and pestle cuts the steep time for infusion in half. Fun to mess with and a reasonably cheap hobby you catch a buzz from. What's not to like?? Words of wisdom: RESPECT THE LEMON AND ORANGE PEELS! A little goes a loooooong ways!!! Great video guys, I laughed a lot and really enjoy what you do.

Your approach to compounding (that you described early in the video, not what you did in the video) is exactly the approach I tried. I had 80 different tinctures. Eventually I just got fed up. There were too many variables and I didn’t have the time to keep at it.
Last weekend, my wife and I went to a wine blending event at a local winery we're members at. We had 3 different pinot noir clones, aged in different kinds of barrels (first fill, used, etc), and worked in teams to make our recipe. The winemaker then made enough of our blends for everyone to blind taste, and we voted on the winning blend. My wife was worried that I was going to be a know-it-all, since I watch you guys and talk about blending whiskey all the time lol. I did convince our team to go with the three tier method (base, then smaller amount, then accent amount), and we got second place. The winning blend was basically an invert of our blend. Overall... I'm 100% addicted to blending now!
Same reason why we like tequila. Because it actually has FLAVOR and because it's always interesting trying to pick out the different flavors and subtle nuances that make each spirit unique.
I want to thanks this video for sparking a new side hobby. As a very occasional whiskey drinker (its hella expensive where I live & my family, except me & dad, are non-alcoholic) I start trying to make some compound gin. One of my favorite Gins is a special distillation from JourneyMan distillery in Michigan. I love their Rye, and this Gin distilled for a Field Musuem in Michigan has so much flavor and really makes the drink. Just wish it wasn't so limited.
For the record, I can speak volumes on coriander, due to a homebrewing mishap. It gives off aromas of orange peel and will typically give off that flavor, as well. If left in a beer or spirit overly long, it will create a strong pickle flavor. Don't ask me how I know. (I struggled through 5 gallons of beer that I refused to make anyone else suffer through.)
When I was young my bartender told me "there is only one time to ever order gin, and that is if you are so inebriated that you cant pronounce more than one syllable words AND you forgot rum was a thing"
A distillery near me actually released an agave spirit (Tequila/Mezcal, but cannot be legally labeled as such). I didn't particularly enjoy it, but I'd be on board for trying more!
Best Gin I ever had for under $100 is Leopold's Navy Strength. Also, Nikka went a different route back when they first opened and produced apple wine. Whiskey Tribe needs to visit the Nikka distillery in Yoichi, Japan. Amazing dedication to the Whiskey craft.
Question for the community: is there such a thing as a 'Rum Tribe'? This has introduced me to a whole world of whiskey, and I'd love to explore rum in the same way.
Been wondering the same. I'm sitting here with three bottles of Havana Club (3 year, Especial and 7 year) in front of me and would love to see some real discussion of rum in all its varieties.
1. Botanist martini w/ just a splash of dry vermouth up with a twist- simple, solid classic drink with a great tasting gin 2. Gunpowder Gin and tonic w/ grapefruit wedge- refreshing
Not even mad. My shameful second love just happens to be gin... That being said, all those that have come to this video because it has Gin in the title: It's a WHISKEY channel... Isn't absinthe traditionally made with brandy as the base spirit, while gin is based on grain spirit? I don't know how strict people are in that regard but it might be reason not to make absinthe.
Quintinohthree the base of absinth is such a high proof spirit that it’s called neutral spirit, originally they used grapes to make it but nowadays grain spirit is more commonly used. Then you've made a barrel aged gin which are also amazing. I believe they usually use old wine barrels so it's basically identical to a botanical infused whiskey but for legal reasons it has to be called aged gin instead of ginned whiskey.
They should've gotten a bottle of Ableforth's Bathtub Gin as a reference for what a 'cold-compounded' gin tastes like. Also, just focusing on mixing is wrong; a gin that can't stand by itself often can't stand in a drink either. They could even barrel-age for additional complexity.
