Hexagonal by design - “roku” (六) is the number six in Japanese. It refers to the six additional Japanese botanicals in the gin. It’s characteristic of a Japanese spirit (in my opinion) in that there are a good lot of flavors, but no one note takes over anything else, and it’s absolutely not heavy; rather, it’s quite subtle and delicate.

Roku gin sounds like a play on words because it sounds like roku jin. Which means 6 people.

I really like Gin Roku. I learned some Japanese when I was in elementary school and I know why they chose the name Roku. Because it means the number 6 in Japanese and they chose the name because of the 6 botanicals that are native to Japan. And that’s also why it comes in that hexagonal shaped bottle. It’s definitely a unique spirit. The Suntory company also makes their own brands of Whiskey and Vodka.

Roku's been one of my favorite gins lately. It seems to mix well with just about everything, and it's even pretty nice neat or with just a bit of water or ice.

@@tungbui3948 A good tonic water for a gin and tonic or a ginger beer (with or without lime) for a gin buck are some of my favorite highballs with it. (Kind of unfair though, as those are some of my favorite gin drinks in general.)
I think that it makes an interesting negroni too. If you like it, try playing with the garnishes and/or bitters, some interesting changes in flavors from Roku's botanicals and some new herbs, spices, and fruits that you've playing with.

Soft and gentle, was what first came to me in it's taste. In a martini, it's so subtle that you might not think that it has alcohol in it. Very nice in a martini. Here in the states, it's quite affordable. Goes great with a mild cigar. Well worth a try. Nice review Bobby...

The ratio tonic to gin was like 10:1, that may have played a role on not finding it punchy! It is not a punchy gin, but that ratio cannot really give you a real taste of the gin!

Roku is a really wonderful gin. I have tried it in a G&T and a Buck (my go to cocktails) which were quite delightful, but as said this is a more subtle gin and therefore beautiful straight. I’m always on the lookout for a good sipping gin and Roku is one of my favorites for that. The Asian botanicals are the key I believe. With a beautiful earthy flavor that had a little burn but nothing unpleasant by any means. It is a unique gin experience and one I highly recommend.

I'm trying it neat right now for the first time, and I think it should be experienced that way. The pepper really comes out in the finish and tickles the sides of the tongue. There are some light floral notes exotic citrus. I really like it, to be honest and I'd put that with my gins that I would make a very dry martini with. Actually - next up will be the saketini which seems ideal for this. I love a gin and tonic, but I don't measure my gins by how good they are with tonic... if anything, I'd relegate the cheaper gins to a G&T, but that's me. If it is “light and airy” then it matches the view (or stereotype) that Japanese things are more subtle. This is the case when those of us who are fans of incense know to expect from Japanese incense (compared to Indian or Chinese punchy strong incenses). Less “oriental” but definitely Japanese

My ratio for gin and Tonics is 1:1 which is a bit heavy for sure but I like to taste the gin.

@john goody indeed. Roku was really great. Mcqueen and the violet frog was also tastey.

@john goody my go too if you want to splurge a little is monkey 47. It's great on the rocks and super smooth. Roku is great for a refreshing drink. So bright and lively. The McQueen is a bit more hardy. It's is perfect for g&t it lightness it up a bit.

Complaining about no cork was the first thing I commented on about this gin after I opened it. 😅

I am a new gin drinker lol (was a beer-vodka), I have been introudced to this via a German guy, on Xmas day and I can't stop drinking it.....here in Indonesia in a local bar including all duties and costs considering high import duties and a Muslim country it's £40 p/bottle which I think is very reasonable.....enjoying your reviews.

Quick question, is there a gin you don't like? Is there a video where you do not like the gin and you say it's crap?

Drink it straight on rocks. Too much tonic

It’s a little bit much on its own. It’s very floral and flavorful. Imo it needs a little bit cut on it.

Hi, from your experience...do you know any gin that is similar to Inverroche (from Cape Town). I simply love that gin but unable to source it in Australia.

Do you ever do tastings without tonic?

The 'perfect serve' suggestion is to add 6 very thin, evenly cut ginger slices! Crucial step to take it to the next level! It's a must :)

My boss bought this for me as a Christmas present. Probably my favourite gin to date! And found myself adding far less tonic than usual.
If you’re looking for further afield, check out Bivrost Arctic Gin from Norway. I picked one up when I was in Tromso in February. The bottle itself is a masterpiece and you’ll get that cork pop you’re looking for!

You should probably avoid using your American accent as well, unless you are a little more specific as to which part of America you are referring to. As with the UK there are a lot of different accents in the USA.
