    True story! About 10 years ago I was in a store and saw a wooden sign that said "Simplify ". I really felt it said what I was trying to define in my life. I picked it up and continued to shop in the store. Eventually I returned it to the shelf and felt I'd truly started, that moment, to simplify my life by not buying it and taking it home.

      I live in a small country town. When my mum was still with us, we sometimes used to go to cities, even the capital and go on shopping sprees. Ofc, we couldn't afford everything we wanted, but she taught me a trick. Everything we thought we wanted, we put in our trolley and "carried around". When we were done looking at everything, we would review what we had in our trolley and find that we didn't REALLY want quite a lot of it. So we would go and put those things back. The brief feeling of "owning" those things was enough. Now, I "carry around" virtually.

    Minimalism, to me, is not a 'beige', empty space, but it is a realistic level of inventory that (1) I can manage; and (2) reflects my current season of life. For example, I no longer entertain as I used to in prior years. The guest room no longer contains a bed. The dishes and cookware are pared down to what I use. My space is still warmly welcoming and filled with color-- and it reflects my life as I live it now.

    My "beginners tip" would be: close your eyes and enter your home in your mind. Is there anything you are immediately annoyed about? That shoe rack that's been falling apart since you were in kindergarten? The old books stacked ceiling-high that nobody has touched since you moved in? The chair you have to walk around to enter the room? Then open your eyes, get up, and fix the issue. There's no need to do everything immediately. Fix what bothers you the most, and start the next day happier.

      @thatswhatisaid8908 13 дней назад

      This is an excellent tip. Some things are harder to fix than others, or more expensive, but at least identifying them allows us to make a plan for the future. In the meantime there are many things we can solve cheaply or for free with just a bit of time and thought and effort.

    I like listening to different people's ideas about decluttering, simplifying and minimalism. I take some ideas from some and do what works for me. Like you, some people have a "you do you" attitude.....but many don't! I'm not trying to join some kind of cult movement, just curating my possessions to just those that serve me and those I enjoy. Take care!

      Minimalism is a design style. That's the bare white room look. That isn't the same as the minimalism that is about decluttering to have only what you use, need or love. That is more of a lifestyle. People confuse the design style with the lifestyle.

    I consider myself to have always had a minimalist mindset… even as a child I always had a deflated feeling after I got the new Xmas or birthday gift. I realized that the emotions I placed on things actually upset me….
    But these people who sleep on the floor and stare at blank walls with only a backpack of stuff to live are crazy. (The opposite obsession as hoarding)
    They are CHOOSING to make their life uncomfortable and obsess over the few items they have vs the tons of stuff)
    Just walk lightly on this earth in what we eat/make/purchase/do. We are only here for a short time… .. remember what really matters.

    At first, I thought you should start decluttering things on the floor and surfaces like tables and counters but the reason why that stuff wasn't put away in a proper home was because it couldn't fit in already overstuffed drawers, cabinets, closets, etc. What you said about dealing with those hidden spaces first makes absolute sense.

    In one of The Minimalists videos, they talk about storage and it stuck with me. Things go into a storage bin to die. After revisiting my own storage bins, I think that statement is true with the exception of seasonal decor, if it is all used. Even sentimental items are rarely if ever looked at and certainly not used or displayed if it's in a bin.

    • @Smithpolly
      @Smithpolly 24 дня назад +2

      I would say , however, with sentimental items, that's it's important to make it clear to people who are just getting into minimalism that letting go of sentimental items is not compulsory. I think if people go in gung ho with enthusiasm at the beginning and throw out lots of stuff, they may find they're remembering a toy from a McDonald's Happy Meal they got at their birthday party as if it was the Holy Grail, compared to if they do it gradually and they're able to really take in that's it's just a toy.

Everything is in its place, clean without overcrowding, everything serves its purpose, there are no drawers out of order. Children's toys have their place, two colors of furniture and I have decorations. I've just always lived like that because a lot of things cause me stress, I work two jobs, the house has to be functional and comfortable and we all like to be in it. This is a great video. Due to a few moves and downsizing, we had to get rid of declutter. We had just too much stuff. Then I discovered the minimalistic videos which helped me as well. And for a while, I put my pressure on myself to try and do more and more. I call myself minimalish now. 😊 My husband joined in and we are good. With the help of people like you and other content creators, I learn to take small steps to even more purposeful living . I take the advice, apply it where I can, and live happily. I have many dishes because I don’t want less. I keep my mugs because I can. 😊. But in other ways, we have freed ourselves from having too much. We started our unintentional journey in a 2600 sf home, with full rooms and closets, a 3 car garage that could only fit one vehicle to a now 1200 sf home, and 2 sheds. We aren’t overloaded but are intentional with what we have and even though, we may not fit the “minimalism mold”, from where we came from😳, we are happy and I love my home and I love being here. I finally added decor, after a fear of clutter. But with videos like yours, I get better all the time!! So thank you for everything!

    My daughter became a minimalist a couple of years ago. Her house it so stark and cold it's not a home. She tore up the carpeting, got rid of colors, tables, pictures on the walls (down to one or 2 in the house). She asked me why I didn't come over to her house as often. I told her because it's hollow, echos, loud and there's no where to put my drink. She said there's a table in the dining room.

  • @brightmoon7132

    The correct answer is, "It depends." And yes, it depends on a lot of things. . . What season of life you're in, whether you work or are retired, if you have kids, etc and etc. For example- I'm retired and a couple years ago I decided to minimalize my kitchen. Gone are all the dishes, many of the pots and pans, gravy boats, giant serving platters and a lot of other things. I will not be spending any more holidays getting up at 4:30am so I can spend the entire day cooking. Luckily the rest of the women in my family feel the same way. We still do holiday and birthday and anniversary dinners, but now we do pot luck or have them catered and share the cost. We use (gasp!!!) disposables for everything but the silverware.
    I have few dishes, only 3 pots and pans, 1 slow cooker, 1 toaster oven (no microwave) and one electric skillet. Enough silverware for four. As for sparking joy, hmmmm, does my 2qt stainless stockpot spark joy? Umm, no. But in January when it's 15 degrees outside and I want to make chili or soup I sure am glad I've got it😉.
    Also linens. I have 3 sets of sheets, one to sleep on, one to change to on washday, and one in case I have an overnight guest. I have duvets with one blantet each for each bed. No pillow shams. That's it.
    On the other hand, if someone told me I must declutter my crafts stuff I would laugh at them. Bitter experience is a good teacher. Yes. I actually made the mistake of doing that when the minimalism craze first hit. Only three days later I was sitting at my kitchen table thinking 'heavens to Betsy what have I done?!' Because of course i found myself needing something that had been decluttered. Never again.
    So yes, be careful. Be mindful. Be intentional. Be honest with yourself. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater😉.

    I spent so long waiting for the mausoleum era to be over that it really me angry that they've now gone to beige instead of grey, but the same nonsense. What the heck is wrong with color? Color is life!
    So let's just say that I'm allergic to minimalism, or how it's portrayed by too many. I get especially angry at those capsule wardrobe people who probably live in one season places, travel by car & spend their time in climate controlled places.
    I live in Paris, travel by public transport, walk a lot. We have 4 seasons & within those, a lot of variations. So I need a lot of stuff for different weathers & temperatures, as well types (work, casual city, casual travel, picnic....). I hate feeling cold or hot, or not being comfy. Add to that the fact that I love colors & I am extremely specific about which color to wear at which time of the year. The only advice from those people that makes sense is to have things that coordinate well together.
    So I chose my own label for myself : intentional maximalist. I will declutter until I reach that magic point where everything I own has a purpose & use in my home. It has to be worthy of occupying my precious limited space & it has to have a home I can access in 2 gestures max : open, take/put back. 0 friction or hassle, because my time is also too precious to waste.

    I do sort of wish that all the sane and clever people who recently decided to no longer buy or keep so much stuff that they can't breathe had NOT chosen to use the same word for their movement as the architects and home designers who make spaces so white and sparse they're not functional or realistic for most humans to live in. Aesthetic minimalism really did have prior claim on that title. That's why it shows up so abundantly when we search. But don't let it make you feel bad.
    I can keep only what I need, have a cozy small comfortable homey house, refuse to turn the crushing wheel of capitalism any more than strictly necessary, and not have to own any painful white furniture.

He often promoted a clothing line that he featured in his videos, with extra soft comfy t-shirts that fit perfectly. Instead of wasting your hard-earned money buying clothes that don't fit and that aren't comfortable. So after a few months of watching i decided to check out this clothing line, featuring t-shirts that were 'extra soft, an fit just perfectly'.. So im looking , love the colors... but the price wasn't clearly visible, I had to search for it... The t-shirts where $52 each !
    I kindly left him a comment speaking of my own minimalist/decluttering journey. Saying I've begun to refuse spending an exorbitant amount for ordinary products based on a designer name. And have realized the importance of spending my money on experiences and making memories with my loved ones. I then unsubscribe and have refused to watch any of his videos.

Move from Europe to North America and back plus cleaning apartment after deceased Parents made me think I don't need a lot. Any advice on this please? My room is tiny and my question is, my room has one window and does't let in much light. Would it be best to brighten the room painting the walls a bright white or sunshine yellow? Any color ideas? I love bright colors. 😊

      Yes! I totally recommend any paint with a high light reflectance value (bright white is awesome). This is a great article about it: www.kylieminteriors.ca/paint-colors-and-lrv-the-ultimate-guide-to-choosing-the-right-color/. I would also add some mirrors around so you can get that light bouncing around the room!

    There a vary clear line between essentialism and minimalism. Your minimalist and that’s ok 😂

    "You don't need to be a minimalist to reap the benefits of minimalism" If you haven't made a video with this title, you should do it. It will be a hit...

    I suspect I'm a mini-maximalist with ambitions to be a maxi-minimalist...or is that the same thing :)

    I can’t with people who dumped all their whole lives in a room and then start swimming in it like why

    You are not a minimalist! And you should not be talking about it to others. Stick with cleaning techniques. Your constant declutterring videos don’t help your minimalistic talks. Just don’t.
