I lost a daughter 3 brothers both my parents and 5 years ago I lost my sister who also lived with me and was like my best friend I suffer from the worst depression there is an. When she passed I got in my bed and stayed there until a few months ago but I have depression shopping and I would order stuff online and when it would come in I would just open the box to see what it was and then toss it to the side and now all these years later I have turned what used to be my clean house into a hoarder house and I'm so ready to start decluttering because I'm so overwhelmed with all this stuff but I honestly don't know what to do I have tried to start several times but I do a little bit and then I get overwhelmed and have to stop plus I have a lot of health issues that limits me from doing certain things and I have no friends because of my depression and I'm disabled so I don't get enough money to pay someone to help me but even though I don't know what to do I have to at least get my bedroom and master bathroom done because looking at it only makes my depression worse but it's my entire house and I have a big house 3000sqft and I used to love to paint and just create things but my art room is so full I have a ton of my arts and crafts in my den I have so much arts and crafts stuff that I could probably open my own store if I could be around people but I really don't want to get rid of my arts and crafts stuff because of I could get my house back cleaned I would be able to start doing crafts it makes me happy but I can't right now because I feel like I just can't do anything until I get my home cleaned and organized if you think you can help me in any way possible I would appreciate it so so much you can message me on FB under my same name here are call me at 2 five 6 seven 0 nine 12 seventy nine and I absolutely love your content God Bless
Not always trying to sell items has been a game changer for me too. The mental benefit has been way better than making a little bit of extra money. Not only does this mean less clutter, but I don’t add extra tasks to my to-do list and feel like there are always unnecessary pending tasks. When I’m struggling with this, I imagine someone else being excited to have the donated item and it bringing them joy! 🙂
This is so true. I had loads of clothes set aside to sell on Vinted and discovered people seem to expect good stuff for what amounts to a derisory amount of money. Instead I have sent 12 bags to charity and the benefits far outweigh the storage and the effort to sell!
I figured this out about a year ago and feel better after donating than I do selling stuff. Sometimes I throw stuff away, it hurts a little, but most times it is makeup I never use or an old shirt with a stain. Once it is gone I never miss it, I have no clue why I find it difficult to get rid of dumb things!
I have a white bookcase that I love having. It has 8 shelves. Two are full of books. The rest have books, pics, and small fake plants. All the books I use or read. I buy my books from the Book nook at my local library for $2 or $3 each. When I am finished reading them I donate them back and get others. It is never cluttered and always looks nice.
Me too! We are considering moving and are looking at the real estate market in our area. I’m trying to prepare myself mentally by considering the items in our home in this way.
Hey there fellow declutterer! LoL i have gotten rid of my decor, chlothes, kitchen stuff, bedroom stuff etc .... and wow i love my home now but i´m not done! I always think before i buy stuff and ask myself the question where would i put this or would i use it. I love my minimalistic home ahhh the the empty spaces just love it
I'm in the process of major decluttering. I can feel the weight lifting off me! When I'm done, I may have to tether myself to keep from floating away! 😂
I'd kept all of my children's art and craftwork, school books, stories, etc; and I mean ALL. My three children are all approaching middle age! Their stuff filled 4 or 5 big boxes. I had to declutter much of it, and they didn't want it. It broke my heart, but the mantra that kept me going was: If EVERYTHING is special, then NOTHING is. I'm not finished yet, but I'm down to one big box. When I'm finished, I will be left with the special pieces, and I can give them the space and honour they deserve.
Thank you for saying that sometimes it's necessary for us to use the area under our beds for storage. I have a storage container that fits under our bed for a few extra blankets that we like to keep in case we need them for guests. I don't want to take up the space in our linen closet for them because we seldom use them. So many organizers tell us to never place anything under the bed. It's so nice to hear that it's okay to use that space if needed.
I absolutely hate storing stuff under the bed, but with very limited storage space and a husband who insists on keeping loads and loads of stuff "just in case" and absolutely refuses to discuss it, there really isn't any other option, unless I want open spaces filled up with clutter. (Edit to "absolutely" laugh at my own comment 😁)
Not bringing things in is the Key. I think I Eames aware of the fact that I am a "Consumer". I noticed I bring things in all the time but I never take anything out. My niece is like you. She let's the "stores" store her things until she needs them. At this second I just realized...they are called "Stores" for a reason. They "store" things until we come in and buy them. Y....I never thought I'd this until just now. Also, my nephew says "don't take anything you don't need". We ALL know this. You have great points! Thank You for this video!
We used to live in a similarly sized 774 sq.ft 2 bedroom condo. It was more than enough space for our family of 4. We since moved to a house twice the size, but find that we don't even use half the square footage. Less stuff makes small spaces seem vast.
I have done it! I live in 750-square foot apartment. I decluttered one of my clothes closets. It stores my seasonal decor and some sentimental items and bulk items. I store off season clothes under my bed. I store four bins under my daybed with some kitchen items and sentimental items and games and puzzlesl
Thanks for all the great tips! I live in a 300 square foot apartment in NYC and I totally agree. One box for sentimental items, and then basically everything else needs to be something I’m using frequently in my life now.
Excellent tips... I love a good storage ottoman! I think my biggest weakness is not being intentional about decluttering something when adding something new, especially the little things like socks and underwear.
Sometimes you can get a sense of how often a certain thing goes on sale, and just stock enough to get you to the next sale. I’ve done this with butter, detergent, coffee, etc.
Fantastic advice & tips!. I am steadily decluttrring 20yrs of accumulation, and your incredible videos are giving the major morale & ideas boost I need to plough on ~ thank you! (there's a bag of old clothes for textiles recycling, and a bag of kitchen stuff for the charity shop, both going out today :)
I'm loving this video and wish I could comment on all of it. 8:28 I also have ADHD SO fellow ADHD folks,. 8:28 the book that went into the ottomon. Gone. That would be like tossing it I to the void. I have a storage chest and spent over an hour looking for a cooler. On my way out of my house utilizing grocery bags and boxes for my food I was transporting, I remembered where it was. The storage chest.
My first "real" apartment (where I wanted to put down roots) was a 1-bedroom with no storage. I kept my snow tires in a friend's cellar, but otherwise just didn't buy a lot of stuff and got rid of things (like the box a printer had come in despite their advice to keep it). I ended up staying there 22 years, and only after moving to a place with storage did I realize what a great precedent those years had set for my life. I come from a family with a hoarding history, but the horror of that and the practical lack of space shaped my habits. When I moved here, I could have gotten Christmas decorations, but by then I realized I didn't want any. My cellar space now holds little more than my bike, out-of-service flower pots and painting eqipment. I truly thank God for all those years without storage.
Fun vlog. I have no garage or basement. I chose to buy a house without because I knew my husband would fill it with crap. We have an attic.. mainly full of his stuff and moving boxes. But also suitcases, camping/skiing equipment and xmas decor. All my other stuff I keep in the main house... seasonal decor and paperwork, craft stuff, DIY tools are on shelves in my Harry Potter under the stairs cupboard. I have a garden shed for bikes and garden equipment.. but nothing else is in there... just decluttered it again and got rid of garden games we don't use anymore..still a few garden things i could declutter... but they are on "probation" for this gardening season.. otherwise I will bin them.
We lived in two apartments before buying our first home. The first apartment had two bedrooms, guess what the 2nd one was used for? The 2nd apartment had storage lockers in the basement. We had two before we moved. Our first house had a basement. Our second home was larger and also had a basement, but it was only 1/3 full when we moved in. Now, we've been in our home 30+ years and it's packed to the gills. Before moving to Assisted Living, my parents lived in a condo with only a small storage closet. After we moved them to Assisted Living, my wife and I (both retired) spent 2 months in the condo. That got me thinking about how much/little we'd actually need to live comfortably and how completely out of control our home (3000ish sq. ft.) is. My problem is that I realize it's time to declutter/simplify/ do our Swedish Death Cleaning, but my wife isn't ready to let go of stuff we haven't used and never will. I keep trying to get her to see my point, but she won't/can't. I watch these videos with admiration/envy. Hopefully my bride will come around, before we're unable to do anything about it.
Had to buy storage for groceries in bulk during the pandemic am now in my 70s continuously decluttering (target swedish death clean😁) and so glad to let go of those storages
Stop the inflow, stop buying backup stuff, stop driving past thrift stores that pull you in like a magnet. I feel like she knows me lol. I'm definitely going to work on that. Subscribed.
Thank you soooo very much for this special angle on decluttering. I am restoring an old Spanish Colonial in South America and there are literally NO closets anywhere in the entire house. They just weren't built. So your tips are incredibly helpful. Thank you!!
I do have a few multi-purpose items that work nicely. My bed has storage underneath and in the headboard. Also, I bought a mirror that holds jewelry as well.
My mother always says that when buying something new or old, ask three questions: 1. Have I got somewhere for it to go. 2. Can I afford it and 3. Do I really, really want it. Moving home after 32 years at the moment. It is pure hell!!
THANK YOU!!! i saw your last video u were referring to, and yep, thats me, where do i put stuff? No cellar or basements u guys hav in the USA, UK homes are tiny! and suck! lol.xxxx
Hi. I am still not clear on this point. If you have no storage spaces, where do you keep the storage boxes you are speaking about? Do you just stack them along a wall in one of your rooms? That doesn't make sense to me. Thank you.
Hi! So I suggested under the beds or up high on shelves for things les frequently used. Or, up high in any open spaces (if you have them) above cabinets - like in the kitchen, a lot of people have a space between their cabinets and the ceiling. 😊
Yes, mostly in older homes you have a usable attic. In the desert southwest and in FL you do not have basements. Many of us here in the Sunshine state have storage buildings in our backyard. These are way smaller than a basement and a good portion is used for lawn mowers and other yard equipment
@tarynmaria_ I already use the space under the bed as closet storage for belts, scarves, purses t-shirts, and winter clothing. Above the cabinets in my kitchen requires a very tall ladder, so storing anything there would be very inconvenient, not to mention that I would have to build a shelf up there on top of the cabinets because they have that fake molding along the front edges. I guess I thought the boxes you mentioned were for additional things we needed to access on a regular basis, which is why I am wondering where to store them.
One drawback to not buying at least a few multiples is that shopping has become a horribly time-consuming and miserable experience. Stores are massive, the parking lots are massive, etc. 40 years ago we could go to local stores that were reasonably sized and had what you needed, and were pleasant.
Is there no online delivery where you live? That could be an option if you have it, just purchase online and have it delivered, although there could be a shipping fee but perhaps it is worth paying to avoid all the stress of going out just for one or two items.
Yes, I had to avoid garage sales. Attracted by wood furniture, must not allow myself to even look from the car! Costco is also a danger - I now make targeted short trips, 8 items only.
One thing is that I often buy backups when they are on sales (big discounts) because I have this anxious thinking that I will have to buy full price if I only buy when I finish using the old ones. How can I tackle this problem?
Excellent vídeo, wonderful tips. The only thing I would be careful is to store stuff under your bed. It will affect your overall peace of mind. I have done it but I have learned not to do it at all. Thanks for the video! ❤❤❤
We imagine winning big and taking household items outside and mark free. What would we keep is the big question? Sentimental, photos, Bible, medication, change of clothes and phone charger. ☺️🎉
I laughed when i heard Many if us don’t have extra rooms😂. Also. One box for sentimental made me laugh. Raised four children. Im obviously a bit old and i have all my old photos and my kids photos as well as all the art and stuff i made and they made. I rarely actually use most of the things in my house. It’s all memorabilia. I guess i am saving it for when I’m jo longer depressed about my divorce. I think i need a specialist to help me😢.
This point that if it’s less than $50, don’t even bother to sell it, just infuriates me 😤 you know that donating centres are overflown? even a little effort to make sure to find new home for an item counts. Making sure those items don’t end up in a landfill after we get rid of it, is our job and responsibly.
I had to laugh at the 5-10 minutes tidying versus an hour 1 time a week. My house is like 2 hours a day, and 5-6 hours every weekend. Product of a 400 square foit home with a messy husband, two labs, a cat, and non ending remodeling.
I agree. She briefly mentioned Dana K White and honesty, that is the number one tip IMO when you don't have storage space. Her container method explains it perfectly, no matter if you downsize or have a place with no storage - that means your "container" got smaller and if you don't want the clutter around, it's time to declutter until your stuff comfortably fits the amount of space. We used to live in a 3 bedroom apartment, then in a 2 bedroom with 2 large walk-in closets, then a 2 bedroom with nearly no storage. When we lived in the larger spaces, I did toy rotation, we had different kitchen appliances, large vacuum, each of us lots of clothes. Thanks to Dana K White, I understood that our "container" space simply had changed. And started decluttering accordingly. We have all our clothes (houshold of 5) in one closet, everyone of us has clothes for 5 days, I do laundry at least 2 times a week, so no problem. Most people wear the same 20% of their clothes all the time anyway - so that's essentially what we kept. Living in the south, so we each have a jacket and some clothes that we can layer for colder days but even in a colder climate, when you only keep clothes for a week, it will fit any standard clothes closet. Toy rotation is the biggest lie of consumerism IMO. Before I started toy rotation, we had so little - with rotation, there is "no harm" in more and more toys. We're down to toys our kids play with at least weekly on a regular basis, which is still a lot (could easily fo down to the stuff they only use daily by keeping pretend and small world stuff but even years later I have such bad buyer's regret getting all those wooden educational toys that I just can't get myself to declutter them - it's my last big decluttering hurdle). Kitchen items we're down to what we use monthly - we have a really small kitchen and if it would be any smaller, the slow cooker and air fryer would need to go. All those appliances take so much space when most of the time any gadgets or appliances can easily be replaced with knife, pot, oven. Seasonal decor takes a lot of space too. So I got rid of most and now we do seasona arts/crafts each year to decorate, which is so much fun for the kids - and I'm down to one small tote of seasonal decor, which pretty much hold our Christmas tree decor. So yes, no stroage space means accepting the "container" that you have and declutter accordingly. Which often means a change in life style. It also may mean a closet, dresser, or cabinet for the things you do need. Which may look different than a pintrest minimalist but it's also more honest - I have to laugh every time I see the basement of the minimal mom 😂 most people who rent in apartments don't have that kind of space. Her living area may look minimal but I always imagine how it would look like if all that stuff down there would need to be in her living space and that always makes me realize how realistic our space is even though no one would call us minimalist when they entered our apartment, even though we have so much less. Space is a limit. So if someone feels cluttered, look at what you truly use constantly - everything beyond that is just convenience.
@@ronjab4586 I love the Minimal Mom, but her basement is huge! And what about her outbuildings? My house would be immaculate if I had those extra storage spaces. I live in the UK, and have almost zero storage space. The loft (attic) is accessible by ladder only, and can only really take a few boxes. We have no basement or garage. Most British homes have no separate laundry room - our washing machine (and dryer, if we have one) is in the kitchen.
@supergran1000 exactly. I'm originally also from Europe, so used to washing machine in the kitchen or tiny bathroom, zero built-in closets, no garage and a tiny basement area that usually just so holds the winter tires 😆 My US husband was so shocked with this latest apartment of ours that has nearly no storage space while I still find it impressive - one of the walk in closets in our last apartment was nearly as big as my last tiny studio apartment that I had in Europe 😆 so of course our apartment looked minimalist while we lived there - not so much now even though we downsized so much. But I learned that as long as it's functional and not above my clutter threshold, I don't mind. Storage space here in the US is so easily available: garages, crawl space, attic, basements, and additional storage units everywhere - in the end it just makes people hang onto their stuff even when they don't use it, it's a lot harder to clutter up the available living space and you need to confront decluttering a lot sooner
Everyone has a different cadence, but I for one appreciate your speed! Most videos I put on 1.5x because I feel people talk too slow 😅 goes to show we're all different. @@tarynmaria_

Growing up with tiny closets. We stored out winter blankets between the mattress and box springs.
Great idea!
I know what to do now if god forbid I ever needed to move or if I gladly needed to declutter or get rid of extra storage I currently have.
I stored the blankets under the fitted sheet. Very soft and comfy❤
That is seriously such a genius idea!!!
Great tip! Did you bag them first and then place them under the mattress?

It’s so hard getting rid of kid crafts, artwork, etc. ❤️🩹 Good for you!
Living in a home that's 120 years old, we have NO closets. Multi functional furniture is an awesome space saver
So helpful!

Keep it in a sealed bag❤
You can get bed risers, to make even more space!
Not bringing things in is the Key. I think I Eames aware of the fact that I am a "Consumer".

The only issue about not having backups is with the cost of living is when an item is on sale, it can be financially better to buy extras.
True! I think it's all a trade off for sure.
The January sales got us here...😅
Sometimes you can get a sense of how often a certain thing goes on sale, and just stock enough to get you to the next sale. I’ve done this with butter, detergent, coffee, etc.
Keep backups in your trunk or back of your SUV
One way I look at it, is that .25 cents I've saved worth the space it's taking up in my home.
Label your boxes on the top, and on one side, so that you can always tell what’s in them from any viewpoint.
Great tip!!
just what I did , because i learned the top IS NOT the ONLY way to label!!
I label 2 opposite sides

@ love your content . I was being funny but for me it's a toss up if I'll ever find something once I put away.
Over the door shoe organizer can be used for many things. At work there was one in the supply cabinet that held various things.

Good luck, I bet you can meet in the middle somewhere with this!
@@tarynmaria_ Not likely, but thanks!
Subscribed.
Welcome, I'm so glad you are here! :)
Thank you soooo very much for this special angle on decluttering. I am restoring an old Spanish Colonial in South America and there are literally NO closets anywhere in the entire house. They just weren't built. So your tips are incredibly helpful. Thank you!!
You are so welcome! Thank you so much for sharing and best of luck on this project!!
I’m in a very tight space with no storage area. I keep my out of season clothes in under bed closed storage containers and this works out great.
Thanks for sharing!!
I do have a few multi-purpose items that work nicely. My bed has storage underneath and in the headboard. Also, I bought a mirror that holds jewelry as well.
Thank you for sharing!
Such consistently great (and genuinely helpful) content, Taryn! ✨
Thank you so much!!
My mother always says that when buying something new or old, ask three questions: 1. Have I got somewhere for it to go. 2. Can I afford it and 3. Do I really, really want it. Moving home after 32 years at the moment. It is pure hell!!
Very smart of your mother! Wishing you luck with your move!!
I needed this
Awesome!
This video is exactly what I needed! Thank youuuu! 💕
You're so welcome! ❤
THANK YOU!!! i saw your last video u were referring to, and yep, thats me, where do i put stuff? No cellar or basements u guys hav in the USA, UK homes are tiny! and suck! lol.xxxx
Yes! My mother in law lives in Bulgaria - and same, no attic or storage really at all.
super helpful, thank you 🙂@@tarynmaria_
This is very helpful, thank you.
You're very welcome!
Would I bring this to my new home - love what you said-
One drawback to not buying at least a few multiples is that shopping has become a horribly time-consuming and miserable experience. Stores are massive, the parking lots are massive, etc. 40 years ago we could go to local stores that were reasonably sized and had what you needed, and were pleasant.
Very true! We have a store near us that I refuse to go to because it's so huge and it takes so much longer to shop there!
Is there no online delivery where you live? That could be an option if you have it, just purchase online and have it delivered, although there could be a shipping fee but perhaps it is worth paying to avoid all the stress of going out just for one or two items.
Im going to give it a go...the 2 piles thing....use everyday and dont use everyday❤
Awesome! ❤
Yes, I had to avoid garage sales. Attracted by wood furniture, must not allow myself to even look from the car! Costco is also a danger - I now make targeted short trips, 8 items only.
I'm also attracted by wood furniture! :)
One thing is that I often buy backups when they are on sales (big discounts) because I have this anxious thinking that I will have to buy full price if I only buy when I finish using the old ones. How can I tackle this problem?
I actually think having backups is great - I would say limit yourself to 1 or 2 backups and that way you can keep it manageable! :)
Excellent vídeo, wonderful tips. The only thing I would be careful is to store stuff under your bed. It will affect your overall peace of mind. I have done it but I have learned not to do it at all. Thanks for the video! ❤❤❤
Thank you so much!! 😊❤
Very helpful. Frustratingly, I have to watch these videos on decluttering and letting go multiple times before actually taking action.
Thank you! - I think decluttering videos help give some ideas and motivation, which is always good!
Another great video!😊
Thank you so much! 😊
I needed this one !❤
I'm so glad! ❤
Put a shelf one foot to 18 inches from the ceiling around most rooms. Store less used and backup stuff up there, in decorative bins or baskets.
Thank you, great tip!
We imagine winning big and taking household items outside and mark free.
What would we keep is the big question?
Sentimental, photos, Bible, medication, change of clothes and phone charger. ☺️🎉
Great idea!
I have one very small closet for my clothes, and not much else. Think hotel closet.
I have no closets, no attic, no basement.
A BOX for x-mas!!! How about 10!!!😂😅
Using the library means I don’t buy a lot of new books.
Same, I no longer buy any books!
Ahhh I feel your pain!!
Ugh
Do I see you are Packer fans?
Good eye! My husband loves the Packers!! :)
I saw that too! I'm from Wisconsin...its always good to see a fellow packer fan!
No wayyyy. Do not put stuff over-top of kitchen cabinets. Declutter instead!!!
I'm originally also from Europe, so used to washing machine in the kitchen or tiny bathroom, zero built-in closets, no garage and a tiny basement area that usually just so holds the winter tires 😆
My US husband was so shocked with this latest apartment of ours that has nearly no storage space while I still find it impressive - one of the walk in closets in our last apartment was nearly as big as my last tiny studio apartment that I had in Europe 😆 so of course our apartment looked minimalist while we lived there - not so much now even though we downsized so much.
Sorry….but I don’t get rid of anything that’s sentimental.
hey what is your date birth
I'm a December baby!
@@tarynmaria_ year ?, tell me full of you birthday, because i want to know your feng shui
Please talk slower!
You can slow the speed down in settings
Good tip to slow down the speed! I'll also try to speak slower next time (you're not the first one to ask this) ha!
Everyone has a different cadence, but I for one appreciate your speed! Most videos I put on 1.5x because I feel people talk too slow 😅 goes to show we're all different. @@tarynmaria_
I did not reply as insult. I did not know I could slow down the speed. Thank you for the advice..
