Love the hints
White couches are perfect as long as they come with covers you can wash on 60C or hot. Wash 2x and put the covers back on while wet ! Just let them dry out while standing. So you have to do them in portions… that is the only draw back. I have mine from Ikea for years and clean them 2x a year.
For those who don't like to dust 🙋♀️👋;
Put a dryer sheet opened up flat into your heat registers; they attract dust and keep some of the dust that comes right from the furnace, circulating through your home.
Also, for anyone renting a place that has the metal cladding around the windows; if there were smokers or people who cooked greasy foods, Windex works great on them to get rid of anything nasty that won't come off.
If you have a lot of build-up on glass doors, use toilet cleaner and a green kitchen scrubbie, rinse, then use a squeegee after every shower. There is also a "Daily Shower Spray" product that can help.
About the clear color countertops I have to disagree because in my company’s kitchen they have one white countertop and it was really stained; in contrast I have black granite countertops and you can’t notice any stain; I only have to use a wet towel paper
The best advice you gave, was, "Don't buy a big house!" 😂😂😂😂
Ha! Thank you! 😊
I’ve been wanting to downsize and my husband won’t have it. He doesn’t have to clean it. I would also prefer a one story home.
Hi! Maybe you could start with your stuff and he'll get inspired? @@joannhacker9120
@joannhacker9120 then husband can pay for a maid
Absolutely..I have a 1200 sq foot bungalow and it's good enough. I have a full basement for storage etc. Another thing also is to minimize..most people don't NEED 2/3 of what they have
I'm almost 70 and have achieved the ultimate housecleaning hack. I took the seats out of my car, put a mattress in, put my things in storage and took off on a car camping adventure. No more housework!!!
Wow! Thank you for sharing!
@@tarynmaria_ Obviously I pay for gas and maintenance, but no rent, utilities or wifi now! I take free showers at Planet Fitness too, since I switched from Medicare to Humana and am now in Silver Sneakers.
Enjoy a safe trip!
I'm going to join you on the road.
Now that’s living!
Clear glass shower walls/door. Hate cleaning them.
So much soap scum! My tip is to squeegee after every use - it’s worth it! :)
Try using rain x on them as well
I clean my shower after each use. Just takes a few minutes and is totally worth it.
Change from bar soap (soap scum main culprit) to liquid bath wash, squeegee after shower. After cleaning the doors with water, vinegar, Dawn solution, apply RainX.
My husband came home one day to find I had removed the glass shower door and replaced it with a spring rod and curtain😮. Took 20 mins off the cleaning time for that bathroom. No regrets.
Open shelving is a design mistake you only make once.
I can imagine!!
Omg, all the designers who push them, big nope. They're worse than the tops of cabinets because everything on them gets dusty and greasy. I really hate them. 😊
And plate racks!
I love my open shelves
A solution for the non ceiling cabinets is to put a sort of paper (newspaper, packpaper etc) and once a year roll it up, put it in the trash and get a new one on the cabinets. You will never have to shrub them etc. ...all dirt will land on the paper and it will get out of your house and cabinets if you change them.
Agree. Works like a charm
Good tip but obviously not above the hob as it's a fire hazard. Definitely try and get units built to the ceiling with functioning storage, not just something to fill the space. It's easier for carpenters and kitchen fitters to leave a gap.
Good idea. Unless you have a cat, of course :)
I do this on my living room shelves. Works great.
I do this on my living room shelves. Works great.
I agree with every single one of these, the only caveat is, I love a gas stove, and it’s worth it because all stoves are dirty and nasty no matter what type you buy. Gas all the way for me. Plus in an electric outage during a winter storm, you can eat and keep warm by your stove. Saved my dad and his sister in the winter storm that hit Texas 1 or 2 years ago.
Thank you so much for sharing!!
Exactly what the government doesn't want you to be able to do ;)
Remember staying warm that way as a kid!
SAME! You've got to have more than one energy source in your home. It's saved me from freezing to death in northern Minnesota.
Plus, I can. I like the instant on and instant off of gas. You're not supposed to out a pressure cooker on a glass top stove. I recently had to do it. My house came with it. I decided to keep it until I broke it, then replace it. It lasted a year.
If you have lung cancer do NOT get gas
After 40 some years of house cleaning, your right on it, sister, great job.
Thank you so much!
Washable rugs and washable slip cover sofas are a game changer.
I need to check out those washable area rugs!
I couldn't survive without washable slipcovers! Unfortunately, I have yet to find a washable rug that I like. They're so thin and lightweight that they look like scatter rugs.
I need to find washable slip covers for 2 chairs the cat shreads and sheds on! I'm sick of using ugly sheets to protect them.
Yep. We have Ruggable brand rugs and love them. They wash up amazingly well and look like new.
@@SheilaR.08I understand Ruggable has different weights available for their designs now, going from low pile to higher pile.
I am a house cleaner and just want you to know I say "Amen!" to all of this! 😂
Also, tip for greasy dusty spots like the tops of kitchen cabinets, go to Lowes and get the Dawn Degreaser (it's a purple liquid). Spray it on and that stuff wipes away like magic.
Thank you for the tip!!
I use alcohol - instantly desolves grease and no residue to rinse.
Oooh. Thx
The cabinets that don’t go all the way up to the ceiling are the perfect place for your cats to hang out. 🐈⬛🐈🐈⬛🐈🐈⬛
The cabinet over the refrigerator seems to be prime real estate at my house. 🐈🐈⬛👩🦳💚🍀
It’s an excellent place for cats to hang out. My sister has cabinets that don’t go up to the ceiling. Her cats use the refrigerator as a stepladder to get up on top of the cabinets.
We have the cabinets that don't go to the ceiling as they were the builders grade and my husband balked at paying extra for the taller ones. I didn't put in soffits because I thought the extra storage space was worth the extra work of cleaning. Nope, I want the bigger cabinets now
Gross ,,,cat hair in the kitchen…No thanks
All our ceilings in the living area and kitchen have cathedral ceilings which makes it impossible to make cabinets go to the ceiling..lol unfortunately. but I LOVE my ceilings, they are all white pickled wood in the whole house.
Long haired cats and rabbits have hair so fine that the shedding floats around forming dust bunnies under the furniture in a short timespan that get as big as the animal. It also clogs up the refrigerator coils. The short haired critters just cover your clothes when ever you have to get dressed up but the hair doesn’t spread on air currents. If you want a clean house don’t have kids or pets or cook in the house.
Go for German Shepherds. They only shed twice a year - JanuaryJune and July-December!
I clean homes and seeing a black counter top is my nemesis. Dont put dark surfaces at all in your homes(bathroom/floors/counters/chandeliers etc.) So easy to see dust and grime easy
Fyi: i use oxy clean as a solution to spray on small shower tile grout and let it sit. It whitens grout without all the individual scrubbing 😊
Love that idea, thank you for sharing!!
Omg thank you for that! My daughter’s home has tiny black and white tiles ON THE BATHROOM FLOOR and of course a fully tiled shower…. I hate seeing her Cinderella that damn floor so often with not much change in appearance but it’s clean. I will share this with her❤
I love my black leather granite counters. Maybe it's the sheen of traditional granite that shows everything? I do wipe them down every day. But I always wiped down my kitchen counters, regardless of their color.
If it were only that easy to get apartment managers to get on board... =p
Thank you for the tip! Do I have to worry if Oxiclean gets on the tiles themselves? Or can I spray on tiles and grout?
She has plantation shutters. So do I. I LOVE them. They keep out cold and let just the amount of light I want. I thank God for them. Not a fan of blinds but plantation shutters aren't like regular blinds.
Plantation shutters are great!
Love my plantation shutters!
Yes, I despise verical and horizkntal blinds. The invention of blinds had to bw an evil sadist. Impossible to clean and shards of light blare in all times of day.
I have vinyl plantation blinds. I take them down and put them in my whirlpool tub and cover with water. I turn on the jets for a couple of cycles to clean them. Drain, rinse, and leave them until dry.
Plantation shutters are my signature window covering. Venetian blinds are the worst, and curtains are simply huge dust catchers. Plantation shutters are easy, give them a wipe over with a damp cloth on both sides and you’re good to go
I had my shower renovated with one of those acrylic sheeting materials. All I can say is why use tile when these acrylic substitutes are available. I chose the sheets that look like subway tile and they look great. No grout!!!!!! Let me say again, NO GROUT!!!!!! I love it.
Great tip! I will have to look into those!
I have always wanted to do this!
I’m very happy with my installers “West Shore Home” but they are pricey. They rip the old surfaces out, they check the pipes and then prep the surfaces for their product.
I checked the Kohler company and they wanted 18,000 just to turn the bathtub into a shower. Way too much money.
Don
I'm an old house lover and in my opinion the trick to cleaning "elaborate baseboards" is using the brush attachment on your vacuum. Definitely a major improvement. Also, once you go induction on a stove you don't go back -- its the greatest
Thank you for sharing! Also, lots of people loving induction stove tops!
OMG I have an old stove with a stainless steel top and those Satan-inspired coil burners. HATE it with every fiber of my being. If I could (I rent and live paycheck to paycheck) the first thing I would change is that effing stovetop.
Induction is the best stove. Our power on the cooking temperature is amazing!
Agree, induction is the best. Plus, it's the safest if you have young children.
Yes for eggshell paint. When I was choosing paint for my new home, the realtor tried to convince me matte paint was better. I chose eggshell for the walls and semi-gloss for the doors and trim which is so much easier to clean and more durable. I have no regrets.
Yep! I think matte hides imperfections in the walls so a lot of realtors recommend it but for everyday living - no way! :)
I was advised to paint the exterior of my house in matt....difficult to get grime off. Next year a will go over it in HIGH GLOSS so I can wipe it as easily as a fridge door!!!
Before I designed my home I read a book about what to do and not do to cut down on cleaning. So many designers go for visual interest instead of practicality. Open shelving is crazy to have. If you have those stop short cabinets line the top with something that is loose so instead of scrubbing you pick it up and throw the gunk away. If you have glass shower doors also hang a shower curtain you can close while showering. No hardware on kitchen cabinets. There is a lot! Just think maintenance with all things.
Yes - so much is made for looks and no one considers how to maintain it! Love that you read a book about it, what a great idea.
Oh i have one, get smooth, simple, one-handle sink fixtures. We used to have the two-knob kind and you literally couldn't fit any cleaning tool around them at all. All you could really do was run the edge of a washcloth back and forth between the faucet and handle. I got single-handle ada-compliant type fixtures and they're so much more pleasant to use and clean. I picked models with smooth surfaces, that have enough room to use a sponge/brush/whatever on every exterior surface.
Also try to get ones that don't have any level surfaces. The bathroom faucet i got has a wide flat handle, and a little pool of (hard) water sits on top of it instead of dripping off
Had a house with no hardware on the cabinets.. A nail breaker every time u open not to mention it gets the grab area dirty .. I gotta have the hardware..
@janwilson6763, would you be so kind as to provide the name of the book please? I’m in the throes of renovation, I am house cleaning challenged and I need all the help. Thanks ❤
@@Spider0445 I'm sorry I can't remember. It was nearly 30 years ago.
When I visited my college boyfriend’s mother’s house….she was very proud of the fact that she was able to get the washer and dryer upstairs on the second floor. This was in 1978. She was told it just couldn’t be done. Sure it could. Maybe she had to carry a load of tea towels up from the first floor.
Wow 1978, that’s awesome!! Way before her time!
My washer and dryer is up on the bedroom level. I'm over it. I want them on the same level as me kitchen. I'm running up and down the stairs all day on wash day. And replacing them is a nightmare because installers don't want to take them up.
It is where the laundry is created and stored. Why wouldn’t you?
I have windows with the blinds build in between the panes of glass. We decided on those when he had to replace all our windows. So easy to clean the windows now & no blinds to dust.
I used to have those in my childhood home - they are awesome!
I really want these. Only need 2 new windows, afraid they'll stop making that kind with blinds between the glass before I replace rest of windows
@@meman6964 Hopefully they will be. I had my eye on them for years!
I think they're very expensive too, but very nice!
Wow! I've never heard of that. What a great idea!
Use a sponge mop in very warm water & vinegar to clean baseboards. If you have cabinets that don't go all the way to the ceiling, cover the tops with wax paper or fabric.
Thanks for the tip, Rhonda!
Yes, the ratio is 1 part vinegar to 6 parts water. Works like magic on bisque porcelain, too!!! 😱😺
Cover the tops of cabinets with a thin piece of cardboard.
Linoleum has preserved my cabinets for over 20 years!
The one place I didn't put it was on top of my cupboards smh! 🤦🏽♀️
I use a round bristled brush (like an oversized toilet brush) with quite soft bristles to get all the dust off my fancy skirting boards. Dry or dipped in soapy water. No more on my hands and knees as it's on a pole. 😅
I agree with almost everything.
I love cooking with gas and will keep my gas stove.
I won't ever have shower doors of any kind, not even glass. I prefer a nice curtain that I can toss into the washer.
Although nice to look at, rough surfaces on walls in the kitchen, specially the backsplash behind the stove, are a nightmare to clean. When possible, I will have seamless slab without grout installed.
Such a good point about rough surfaces - especially in a place where lots of cooking is happening! Thank you so much for commenting!
I had gas for a while and like electric better because the flame would go out when I turned the gas one down too low to simmer food.
I cleaned homes for people for a number of years.
When we built our home we had hickory wood floors. They were the best. Our shower had 18” tiles as well as the bathroom floor. My sewing room had wood laminate. My counters were all granite and mixture of colors.
Our last home was brand knew but someone else picked everything. What an idiot she had to of been. Come to think of it so was I for buying the house. Very dark vinyl laminate flooring which the dark was a pain but being laminate in vinyl is worse. I would never have it again. It shifts all the time then you have gaps. The installers were called back three times. The last time was just before closing for us to sell the house.
You are right about mop boards. I hate them in my house that is 63 years old what a pain to try and keep them clean and we don’t have any kids at home.
Cupboard doors with lots of fancy trim. Another bad idea. On the cupboards that don’t go to the ceiling. The day I move in I make sure they are really clean on top. Then I take a few packages of tissue paper. I cover the tops. About once a year I hop up on the ladder and pull the top layer off. And, they are all nice and clean again. When we have sold our homes I just pull off the top layer and it is clean for the next homeowner. Sometimes you might have to pull more than one layer at a time.
I hate glass cooktop stoves. I had when and it was horrible to keep clean. I prefer gas. I never have a boil over because it is instant heat and instant off or no heat.
All laundry rooms should be located on the same floor as the master bedroom. Builders will put them on the second floor. Okay but when the kids leave home guess who has to climb those stupid stairs a zillion times on laundry day. Master suites should also be on the main floor you won’t be young forever.
As far as paint goes satin finish. It doesn’t shine but is easy to wipe handprints off from. Unlike matte finish what touches matte is their for the long haul.
Storage is a necessity for all homes even for the minimalist. You need at least one set of guest towels and bedding so where do you put it if not in a linen closet. Also where does your vacuum or vac stick go? Broom and mop?
My rule for keeping things since I have moved over 25 times in my life is. Have you used it in the past two years. I use two years because maybe you were out of town during a holiday or a season so you didn’t use it this past year but you did the year before. The other question is have you been looking for this item to use but couldn’t find it. Has happened to me.
I loved your video.
Thank you so much and love all of your thoughts here!! ☺
I totally agree about the glass top stoves I hate them! I find them difficult to clean. I like to can foods from our garden, but I am reluctant to please this heavy pots on this stove that came with our house. Stoves used to have thick, heavy duty electric coils that could support the weight. Great tip about covering cabinet tops with paper. Will do it! Thanks!
I've used a hand-held shower head since the late 70's. That is a must have. We even carry a cheap one with us on vacations. Mu hub switches it out when we get there and switches it back when we leave. I'm short and I can't handle not being able to properly rinse my hair or my butt, lol.
That is so funny that you bring one! We love ours too :)
Fixed shower heads are really not fit for purpose. I don’t understand why shower wands are still so rare the US. Some of the solutions for fixed/wand combinations in the US are ugly/makeshift from a design point of view. Maybe that’s why they are not prevalent. In Europe it is standard installation and the products available are well designed and look great.
is it universal? how do you know it will fit the shower
@@MalenaTaylor-jl3wg Most shower plumbing is the same size. I'm sure there are exceptions but we've never had an issue
I have black granite with all the graining, more like marble, and I love it. It doesn't show anything. I love the coolness even ten years after installation, am still in love with them.
Sounds so pretty!
Not to mention the cost of replacing them! They sound beautiful.
That and the leather look black granite.. It’s the shiny solid black that causes the problems..
Black quartz here. I don't find it particularly burdensome to keep them clean.
my black granite with huge flakes is such a pain to keep clean...my other home With white counters is so much easier 😊
The hand-held shower head to clean the shower is the best👍🏼👍🏼 MY hose was about 5 ft. when I bought it and then I replaced it with a longer hose and it is PERFECT now.🙂🙂
Awesome!
I replaced my double basin stainless kitchen sinks with a single larger one. The downside is that it has a nearly flat bottom and square interior corners that collect gunk and is hard to get to in order to clean. Even rinsing off coffee maker items causes staining because it tends to pool on the bottom surface rather than drain. I ordered that sink in order to make it easier to clean pots and pans and it looked modern and fresh, but it’s really kind of gross and extra work.
Ahhh sorry to hear that!!!
Oh me too! I miss my old sink for this reason. These giant square ones are harder to clean !
I live in a Victorian house with all original fixtures. One awesome thing about antique claw-foot tubs is that they are so small and accessible that you can clean them, without climbing inside them, in about 90 seconds. When I see people having to climb around their bathrooms in order to clean them, having to mop under the tub suddenly seems like no big deal.
Your home sounds amazing!! Thank you for sharing 😊
I don’t just hate cleaning, I’m really not good at it. Really…You’ve kicked my knowledge level up 10 notches. Now I know more about what I long suspected. THANK YOU 🙏
Thank you Ann! I don't hate cleaning either :) but some people really do!
If you hate cleaning and have the resources, get a maid or cleaning service. Depending on your habits and house, every week or two, they come in and do the heavy cleaning, and you get your weekends back. Better to stop beating yourself up for something that you're just not good at. Just remember, the day before go through and clear out the clutter so they don't have to clean around it.
I agree, dark surfaces are dust magnets. Was so happy to toss out black book shelf. Hated dusting that thing. Also light colored surfaces make your home look so much cleaner.
I have a dark buffet/hutch and it looks dusty even 10 minutes after I've dusted it! :)
Light furniture and paint also make your house look more spacious. We have a white sofa but we don't have kids or pets. Now that we're not entertaining due to covid, it stays pristine. 😅 It's a white home dec linen so if there's a really bad stain, I can make another cushion cover for it. But it's about 7 years old and still looks good. I love it for the classic design not necessarily the white fabric.
@@MegInASheathDress I wouldn't choose white furniture -- with or without kids. I could just as easily accidentally mess it up. Light or pastels walls, I'm all for that! Both light and dark colors can work in a home -- just depends on where they are. I ALSO do NOT like dark plumbing fixtures, door or cabinet hardware. Something in a satin nickel or champagne is more my style. I knew someone who had a ceiling fan in the KITCHEN! WHO was the genius who thought that was a good idea? Same bad idea as the kitchen cabinets that don't go all the way to the ceiling because of the same kind of grime that will accumulate.
I agree about the washer and dryer, except that the best setup I saw growing up was a washer and dryer in another room that was like a mud room off of the kitchen. It was a little colder in winter, but it never got to freezing temperatures because it was insulated like the rest of the house but It had big windows to see the back yard. That way if we as kids tracked mud into the mud room or were wet or dirty, we could undress, put on a robe and leave the dirty or wet jeans and shirts out of the house so mom could wash it. It had a big metal free standing sink for presoaking clothes. It was an old farm house, and I think it had a genius set up.
Such a great set up! Thank you for sharing that! :)
This is what we did when we moved into our new home.
The washer/dryer was in a second bathroom near the side door, and we hated it.
We opened up a wall from the kitchen to a small bedroom. Then, we turned the bedroom into a pantry/mudroom that included the washer/dryer and utility sink. We cut out the window in the bedroom and installed a door directly to the backyard.
Now, there's no more dirt getting tracked in, there's direct access to the backyard, and I have an indoor plant potting station.
The access from the kitchen to this pantry/mudroom can be closed off so cooking smells don't affect laundry and there's the original bedroom door we kept so we aren't bringing laundry through the kitchen.
We turned the old bathroom we took the washer/dryer from and turned it into a master bathroom with a walk in closet. We closed off the hallway entrance and opened it up to the master bedroom.
We went well under budget when buying the house, and it's a small house so less to clean, but also one floor so it's easy to remodel and has easy access to rooms when we get too old for stairs.
This. My mum has a huge mud-room at the back of her house (near the master bedroom) with a large wash sink, their big freezer, and the washer and dryer. It's also where her two dogs get fed and let outside, so any drool or other mess from them accumulates there, rather than near the kitchen or living room. Makes it easy to throw things into the laundry as needed without going far between bedroom and laundry room, or as a place to keep a bunch of old, ratty towels for wiping the dogs' paws on wet days, and keep it out of sight.
Important for using wooden countertops: you have to let in the wood with oil (from ikea or just linseed oil, an oil which does not start to become rancid) then your tops will not look nasty at all! They are then sealed. But not
suitable for cutting on. You definitely need a cutting board if you want to cut off a piece of bread, for example, otherwise you will get cuts in the wood. Use solid wood, not veneered wood if available!
Thank you for sharing that tip!!
We used satin finish paint on all our walls-not high shine but can clean easily. My ideal kitchen would have No upper cabinets 🎉& a decent-sized pantry. I absolutely agree about dark faucets, sinks, countertops, furniture, & floors. We have high lime-content water in KY and it’s awful to keep any fixtures clean & deposit-free. Plus the dark floors & furniture show every single speck of dust, dirt, thread, cat & human hair, etc. My next home will be a two-three bedroom condo with light floors, no wall-to-wall carpet, white walls, as little furniture as possible, and be cleanable in under two hours, including baths. Also, putting a laundry & full bath on the main level of a home is good for future use to age in-place if we want to do so. A dining room or office on that floor could later be converted to a bedroom. Terrific video!!
Thank you so much, Karen and love the description of your future home!!
This is my kind of home, enjoying retired life.
It sounds like you have some great ideas! Since you mentioned aging in place, just my thought--as a senior adult, I wish I had all upper cabinets. I don't have a pantry, although I have plenty of lower cabinets, which hurt my back to bend down. At some point, I know I should update with pull forward shelves, but that will still be some bending. Sigh.
@susananders3834
I live in a situation like yours and will be losing all lower cabinets soon. Unfortunately, our kitchen pantry is also lost in the upgrade.
No pantry or lower cabinets could be a problem for me. My 3 lowers also have 3 drawers. No drawers in the new kitchen either 😕
Do you have any storage wisdom to share?
I'm thrilled about the new the full size range, and fridge! And the dishwasher that isn't me 🎉😊
Love most all of your tips - disagree on the dark wood floors, though. I have "espresso bamboo" wood floors throughout my home and LOVE them. Used to have oak or white oak floors in my previous homes, and I'd always see pet hair floating around. Not on my dark floors; and it hides crumbs better until I can sweep/mop. Otherwise, I'm also a fan of a handheld shower - drove me crazy trying to clean/rinse the tubs and showers without this handy tool (and turn it on the massage feature and it "scrubs" the grout lines!). Don't like standalone tubs bc you have to clean the inside and the 4 outside surfaces (why would I want more to clean?!). And yes, you need places to store your stuff or your home will look more cluttered than it needs to be - my last house had closets ONLY in the bedrooms; where do you put your vacuum/mop/cleaning supplies? or your coats? or your towels/sheets? How did this house get built without any storage closets?!?!
How funny - my house is the same with closets! We have one ONE closet downstairs and then super tiny ones in the bedroom and nothing else. Thankfully the people before us added an addition for a walk in closet off the master bedroom. Our house is over 100 years old and I honestly think people had a lot less stuff to store back when it was built!
I love my dark wood floors as well, and don’t mind cleaning them 😊
TOTALLY in agreement re: closets! That's ALWAYS the case with apartments! 😣
I've come to the conclusion that's because 'men' design these buildings so, don't have a clue re: 'a place for everything, and everything in its place'! 😱😛 💖🙌😺
Yes! WHY have homebuilders of the last 50-60 years done away with the BROOM CLOSET? Where the hell are we supposed to put all our brooms, mops, vacuums, etc., the linen closet or the tiny coat closet? Not to mention all the bottles of cleaning fluids that don't all fit under the sink!?
@@debracisneroshhp2827 So true! Let a woman design a house and there will be ample cabinet space and some kind of closet in EVERY room. I've been in homes where I've thought, "Man, I'd kill to have this much cabinet space". I've even COUNTED the cabinets.
A high-quality wooden surface will last you for a number of years, without seeing a decrease in its antibacterial abilities. Unlike plastic alternatives, quality wood sources made from traditional manufacturing techniques contain self-healing fibers that can stand up against continuous cutting and chopping in the kitchen.
Thanks for this info, Paul!
Being antimicrobial doesn't mean it's attractive though. Those wood tops look cheap.
Along with functionality, durability. Man, so many modern designs aren't made to last. It is stressful to own them. You just know some poor soul is going to break it with just daily use.
@@MegInASheathDressdisagree completely. Natural materials never look cheap like plastic and artificial materials
Absolutely, no plastic particles
I totally agree with the hand held shower - so much better than using a container to splash water on the walls.
How right you are! As soon as I moved into my new house, I replaced both shower heads in both showers to hand held. Love them! Makes rinsing a snap.
Yes! Game changer!
I just use a thoroughly soaked towel to rinse walls while I'm having a shower.
Your video tackles a very relatable issue-choosing home items that are easy to clean. This is a great video for busy homeowners.
Consider This
1. Pet Beds in Living Areas: They can quickly become a source of odors and pet hair.
2. Intricate Light Fixtures: Dust accumulates quickly, and they are hard to clean.
3. High-Maintenance Plants: Some plants require specific cleaning and care.
4. Rugs with High Pile: Harder to vacuum and clean compared to low-pile or flat-weave rugs.
5. Wicker Furniture: Difficult to dust and clean thoroughly.
Thanks for adding this great additional tips!!
Blinds. It's quicker to take them down (mine just slide into and out of brackets), lay them down in the driveway and wash them off than to try to clean them with a sock or whatever. Just a couple of minutes a couple of times a year.
Wow, great idea! Mine don't come off but if they did I would totally try that.
That's great, unless you live in an apartment__which most apartments come fully equipped with mini blinds in kitchen and bath(the 2 WORSE places for blinds), and verticals in all other rooms. 😣
The verticals suck because when the window is open and the wind blows, even a little, the blinds break off at the top where they connect to the clips__most rediculous design ever! 😱
I prefer curtains, all the way__much easier to take down and throw in washer. Besides, they just look nicer to me. 💖🙌😺
I love my gas stove, Weiman gas stove cleaner and daily cleaner are my favorite cleaners to help clean it. We loose electricity when weather is not bad, during hurricane, winter, it is nice to be able to still cook with no electricity and not waiting for generator to be hooked up.
I have many of the things she cautioned about and let me just say, she is absolutely correct!
Pets and kids, lol
Lol
Ahhh thank you so much for warning me about the black fixtures. I was thinking about getting some, but now I will be avoid them at all costs!
Thank you! They look so pretty but just never look clean!
I like our black kitchen sink a lot - and it feels manageable to keep clean since it's simple to wipe down while doing dishes anyway (we hand wash only though so that might not apply if you mainly use a dishwasher) - I wouldn't want black fixtures anywhere else but like it in this one place! Stainless steel always looked more dirty to be because of the water marks on the shiny surface. Matte black has been nice, for me at least 😊
We didn't get a spirally one like the image she showed in the video, though - that one does seem impossible to clean! Ours is just a simple tall curved spout, with a single handle control and separate sprayer.
will never give up my gas stove! I can cook when the power goes out, which is often in my area. Ice storm of "98, I had everyone coming to my house for a hot meal.
Vermont?!
@@tarynmaria_ maine
Solar panels + battery + induction stove achieve the same, plus you get to keep the fridge and the lights on too.
Hello Maria! I do have a black countertop that is actually great : it is stone, but with many grains and chunks of texture that reflect light in all directions inside. I swear it is dirty as hell and no one can tell XD
That is so good!!
I'm very allergic to dust but I prefer mini blinds to drapes because of dust accumulation. To clean them I simultaneously dust and vacuum them (while wearing a mask).
Here's where it gets weird: A couple times a year I take them down and swish them back and forth in the bathtub with warm soapy water and scrub them with a soft brush, then rinse with the shower head.
It's a little labor intensive, but for me it's worth it because mini blinds accumulate much less dust than cloth drapes (which I would have to wash weekly).
Sounds like that would get them super clean! Thank you for sharing! 😊
We built our home and my only regret was the white farmhouse sink with the stainless steel grate in the bottom. The grate was there to protect the sink from scratches from pots and pans but that grate got disgusting! I was constantly cleaning every square and spraying the slime out of the 4 feet. I hated it!!! My next sink will be stainless steel.
SS sinks are great for damn good reasons except, if you have hard water make sure to rinse with cold water after cleaning and/or dry all surfaces afterward. 😛 Yet, I still prefer them. 💖🙌😺
@@debracisneroshhp2827 I didn't think of that. I lived in Oregon for 52 years and never had hard water. Now, in the mountains of Utah there's nothing but hard water here. But the white farmhouse sink that I hated was porcelain.
I remember my grand mother's cast iron enamel kitchen sink. REALLY EASY to chip, (which show the black undercoating.)...considering all the hard objects that go in a sink. And they STAIN. And the gloss wears off, in time, making it shabby, and hard to clean without an abrasive...which probably caused that...
Stainless sinks were a godsend...but a long time coming. People who get "farmhouse" sinks have forgotten ALL THAT...
You said it! Agree with all your points from sad experience.
One thing that is trouble with a capital T is metal windows. We live in a condo with metal windows that used to be constantly covered in condensation during the colder months. We had to remove all drapes, leave the blinds open day and night, air out our unit several times a day, keep the humidity in the 20-35 range (not healthy) and wipe off the window panes and metal frames at least daily. Even with all that, we would still get mould on the metal window frames. Putting two or three Moisture Grabbers (absorbent gel pillows) on each windowsill has helped, but still…. 😊
Oh no! Thank you for sharing!
I agree with everything you say... except the glass cabinet doors. My mum is extremelly allergic to dust, but loves books. We, on the other hand, HATE cleaning. Ever since i changed to glass cabinet shelves,, I immediatly saw a great improvement. The dust is now controlled, the bookshelves look pretty, and all I do is use a towell and clean the glass. PERFECT! Loved the video😂
Awesome! Thank you so much!
I deep cleaned our walk in shower a few weeks ago, and pulled the hose into the house from outside to rinse it all down. Made the task so much easier!
Storage: I didn't realize deck boxes existed. I went for a walk here in my townhouse neighborhood, and noticed people had these boxes with tops that open like a freezer sitting on their decks, behind their townhouse. Different sizes. They looked like plastic basket weave. What a great idea for my plant pots, garden supplies that were cluttering up my basement. I went online and found them. Ordered a big one and when it arrived in sections my daughter and I had a laugh fest putting the thing together.
What a great find. Now my deck box has plant pots, sheers, tools, pails and poisons I use in the garden, and everything stays there all year round. I live in New England so it gets cold yet all those supplies are safe, and I can walk around my basement without tripping on them.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Watch for those deck boxes at Aldi. I got one there for only $70.00.
Great, but do spiders go in?
@@johenderson3742 I haven't seen any inside mine. Everything inside stays really dry so it seals good enough to keep creepy-crawlies out.
Thanks for sharing! Often I think that a lot of designing is the work of men who don't think about the cleaning it will involve. Or else the little details that need a toothbrush to be kept clean will keep the homemaker busy in the home!
So true!!
My towel rail had to be designed by a male. It is soooo close to the wall that the towel must be hung against the wall and slowly dropped down into the slot!😂😂😂😂
Dear all, I’m from Brazil and came here to see your comments about gas stove. I have one and I love it, but I was hardly thinking about changing it for an induction one. Seeing your experience, I have doubts no more! I’m keeping the gas one. I’m surprised by so many comments about lack of electricity all over the world… it kind worries me.
Best wishes to you all!!! ❤ regards from Brazil!
I agree with EVERY tip!!!
We’ve bought 5 homes since we got married - condo, houses, and a flat.
The flat was THE EASIEST - open floor plan, everything at one end (a lovely view/kitchen/dining room/living room/laundry closet/full bathroom) bedrooms and all master bathroom down the hall at the other end of the unit.
Someday…when I retire I will be looking for a flat or ranch with this set up, makes EVERYTHING easier!
Until then, the next time I consider an upgrade in my current home I’m going to watch your video again to refresh my memory so I don’t kick myself later ;-)
Love it! Thank you so much for commenting! 😊
Glass cook tops are so inconvenient for me. If I drip anything on the burner while cooking it burns and then I have to scrub it off. Ahhh. Can’t wait to have a gas stove!!
True but having had both kinds I still say the glass top is easier and quicker to clean.
They break too easily
There is the induction glaas Cooker. That is the easiest to clean and anything burns because it only hits the pan but not the glass surface.
@@m.sandradhee998...... how have u managed to break one????
I hate glass cooktops. Plus, they stay warm way too long, don't hear as quickly. Nearly everyone's I've seen look gross
Our first home together was a tiny rented flat that belonged to a woman architect who had previously conceived it for herself alone. It looked like a dream but cleaning it was a hell. Bathroom walls were entirely covered in tiny mosaic tiles. Kitchen countertop was small tiles too, including the entire working surface. The floor was natural, matte, untreated wood including the kitchen and part of the bathroom, no kidding. The shower glass and one of the walls were curved. Now, easy cleaning is my top priority when I buy anything for the house.
Oh wow - the tiles on the countertop might have sent me over the edge! Thank you for sharing :)
Oh lord, the tiles on the countertops thing...both of my grandmothers had houses with that in the kitchens, and it was so terrible. I spent several years living with the one grandmother when her health declined, and I _hated_ cleaning up after any mess in the kitchen. Stuff always got into the grout, and no surface was level (the tiles had a weird, wavy-textured surface, despite being glazed, in addition to the way that the grout was never level with the surface of the tile), so a cutting board or plate never laid flat while preparing food. Awful stuff.
One thing that I did when I first bought my house over 20 years ago is line all my drawers & cabinets (bathroom, kitchen, et) with linoleum instead of contact paper.
It's SO easy to clean, especially in the places where makeup, hair products, various sticky foods, & cleaners are kept!
I'm so happy that Ive done this, especially with kids in the house, plumbing leaks, cans that have rusted, hair dye & nail polish "incidents", et, et!
Occasionally some crumbs, dust, spilled liquids+ might get into the crevices, but trust me when I say that doing this has preserved my cabinets, & they still look beautiful & brand new inside!
Love that, what a great idea!
@@tarynmaria_ Indeed...definitely one of the best decisions I ever made when it comes to "house stuff"!
@@tarynmaria_ Agree! A nice light colored linoleum would be great in drawers.
A tip I'd recommended if you live in a place that doesn't have cupboards that go to the ceiling is to cover it with news paper or a sheet or something so you don't have to keep dusting it. When I moved, I scrubbed it once and put foil down so the dust couldn't resettle on the wood.
Thank you!
Excellent video and some new ideas for me, as I think about home updates. Call me unromantic, but I always think about cleaning when looking at home features and decor. I probably agree on everything, but I do like my window blinds to minimize fabrics (you mentioned allergies, and I will add asthma). Thanks!
Thank you so much! 😊
I finally saved enough to remodel my kitchen and had it done in August 2023. I loved seeing that you agreed with so many of my choices. My hubby thought some of my "wants" were crazy but let me go for it. I think our neighbor encouraged him to go with it the "happy wife, happy life" thing. Anyway my hubby recently told me how much he liked my selection of cabinets (to the ceiling), under-mounted sink for easy cleaning, speckled countertop, deep drawers for the bulk of the base cabinets, and a glass top stove. If I could change anything, I would have gotten a new dishwasher with 2 drawers so we could use it more frequently. There's only 2 of us so it would make sense and then have the option of using both drawers when we have company.
Love all of this - so smart!! And the dishwasher idea with two drawers is so good!
The two drawer dishwasher is much more expensive and loses space compared to its single drawer counterpart. It might be cheaper to run your normal dishwasher part full but with a short cycle.
Great ideas; never thought of an undermounted sink.
The only disadvantage of the glass top stove is you can't use cast iron pans on it. They are a breeze to keep clean however.
@@serahloeffelroberts9901I use them on mine all the time. They work great.
Uh oh….I have 7 of these things in my house and I can tell you that you are 1000% correct! What a great video of things not to do/buy. Thanks
Thank you so much! And don't worry - I have tons of these things too! :)
I borrowed a trick from the Victorians: my glass-front cabinets (it's a 1930s Spanish Colonial revival house - had to have glass front upper cabinets) I used "salt glass," i.e., a translucent glass that does not show dust, dirt or fingerprints. Florentine glass (with tiny star patterns throughout) and gridded glass (a shallow waffle pattern or diagonal waffle pattern embossed in), are all low-maintenance easy-to-clean glass that obscure but do not totally hide the cabinet contents and are appropriate for historical homes.
Love these ideas! Thank you for sharing!
@@tarynmaria_ You're welcome.
when we retired, we lost about 25 percent of our square footage when we downsized. And somehow we gained a bathroom.
tip number whatever: don't have a man as partner (I have never missed the floor when I pee).
Designate a bathroom just for him and have him keep it clean. It will improve his aim 😂
Tip on grout cleanning. Easy to use is Mr. Clean magic eraser! So quick and less messy. I agree with you. My house is light color throughout.
Great tip!
@@tarynmaria_ Also, if you have the misfortune of having light-colored grout in the shower, I've found that good old Soft Scrub (specifically the "with bleach" formula) put on and let sit for a few minutes before scrubbing takes out a lot of stains. It also works a treat on caulk stains (we have a shower-tub combo with tiled walls, so I'm constantly fighting with stains right where the grout meets the caulking on the tub), and even after it's rinsed off it'll keep working where it's penetrated for a bit, getting into the stains you thought weren't gone.
She's correct about the kitchen storage shelves. I have scrubbed them off 2 times and then I stuck old newspaper and then just change newspapers every 6 months.
Greta tip!

I agree with you on most of these with one exception. I am talking from experience here. You never want to put large tiles on your bathroom floor or shower stall because they are unbelievably slippery. I made this mistake in our house and regretted it big time.
Yikes, thank you for sharing!
And freezing cold!
Ceiling fans, plant shelves, blinds, panel doors/cabinets, glass cooktops, and above the stove microwave. HATE THEM!

My home was built in the late 1880's and was renovated in the 70's. We had a pepto bismal pink bathroom with WHITE carpet. The paint was an easy fix but no amount of carpet scrubbing could take the ick factor out of having carpet in the bathroom. The fact that it was white was even worse. Was so glad to rip that out and I'm shocked we didn't take that out before we took out the rust red shag carpeting. I will say the previous owners of the home took really good care of the carpets, they looked like they were in good shape for the age they were...but carpet everywhere was a nightmare with animals and kids.
Carpet in the bathroom used to be so popular! I am so glad it isn't that way now :)
Love my gas range! I don't have problems cleaning it. The grates go in the dishwasher and I have a liner that is put on the top rack to clean. It was ordered and made to fit my stove.
Awesome!
Id rather gave a gas range as the quality of cooking is so much better. So what if the grates need to be cleaned--clean them.

I love it!
I just started this video and already love it!! Brilliant! Thank you!!
Amazing! Thank you so much!!
All valid points. These were all considerations & factors that I had when I remodeled my kitchen & bath 😊.

Try after cleaning your baseboards, then when they are clean and dry, wipe them with s dryer sheet. Dryer sheets, with their static repellant properties also repel dust too!!! So after this "first application wipe' you might be able to clean them with just a duster and another dryer sheet wipe in the future, hopefully:)
Word of CAUTION though, this method is NOT recommended for low lieing areas (like shelves and baseboards) for households with pets who will rub against or lay down on it then later lick the dryer sheet chemicals off of their fur & ingest it (it's also not really recommended to use dryer sheets on pet bedding either, fyi tangent lol)
Awesome, thanks for sharing!!

Awesome 👏 video! 100% agree on everything. Had black quartz countertops in our old condo, never again. 😊

I disagree about the gas range. Better control of cooking temperature is a greater priority to me than worrying about cleaning the stovetop, which isn’t a big deal.
Thanks, Rose!
That's why cooks are having a fit over what the government is trying to do. I wish people would wake up to what is going on. It isn't a conspiracy.
I totally agree about the Window blinds. It’s a beautiful decorative piece or window treatment. However, it is such very time consuming during cleaning. For that matter, I basically asked my husband to stripped all of it down . Replaced all of it all with a sheer, heavy and block out curtains. Strategically design them in spaces that you want to highlight and define accordingly to use.
Thank you!

There are round cleaning brush attachments made for cordless drills (be safe!) that clean showers and grout amazingly well!
Thanks Audrey - that would definitely make it faster!

I had honed black granite countertops in a condo, and I loved them.
They are beautiful! But I'm definitely wiping mine all day with kids around :)
I have a matte black Moen basic pull down with a button faucet in my kitchen and I’ve had it for 4 years and I’ve never “cleaned” it. I wipe the dust off occasionally like every few days. I wipe up the water around the base in the evening after I load the dishwasher. I have ZERO problem. I have matte black faucets in the kids bathroom. I overnight soak a microfiber cloth in vinegar and wrap it around the base of the faucet to remove hard water and toothpaste. In the morning it’s perfectly clean. I LLOVE my matte black fixtures!! It looks so good in my home. I have darker sage green cabinets, white/grey/black speckled quartz countertops and brass knobs and the black looks so beautiful with it all.
Your countertops and cabinets sound awesome!!
Matte paint is a paint sheen . Eggshell paint is a color.
Paint sheen types are organized into two broad categories: flat or matte and semigloss and gloss .
Flatt or matte paints absorbed more light than they reflect, so they have no sheen. Semi gloss and gloss paints reflect light, giving them a bright, shiny finish.
A well designed room will use both types of paint to give the walls the effect that the room needs to look it's best according to the style of the design, the size and high of the ceiling.
Eggshell is also a sheen - it’s one step up from matte or flat. Some people call it satin!
I thought the same. Eggshell is a colour, not a finish. ❤
Such a unique and fun video! I'm a renter with no plans to take on the burdens of home ownership, but this gave me a lot to think about in terms of looking for a new place. I love to organize and declutter but HATE to clean, so I'm all about making cleaning as simple as possible, even if that means sacrificing some things that seem aesthetically pleasing on the surface. Love your videos!
Thank you - I so appreciate your comment!
Me too, I'm super practical about this kind of stuff
On the other side of the coin, renting is no guarranty you won't have to deal with many of those issues.
We rent an apartment in a very old complex. They began 'upgrading' a couple of years ago, mostly, the kitchens.
The old, original cabinetry had flat surfaces with one knob. The bottom cabinet, next to the stove, had 2 nice-sized utensil drawers and 3 wide, deep drawers below them(perfect for dishes, pots, or storage containers/paper goods, etc.). The above cabinets reached the ceiling but came down lower to the countertop, and were deep__great for me cuz I'm short and I was able to reach the second shelf inside. Everything was painted the same as the walls and ceiling, semi-gloss 'apartment white'.
The flooring continued in from the living room, which is med./dark brown vinyl sheeting that looks like wood flooring, grain grooves and all. I much prefer wood floors but was fine with what we had.
When they upgraded, they replaced the kitchen flooring with large, UNSEALED, grey ceramic tiles__WHAT THE HECK?!!! Looks like a garage floor, as well as, THEEE WORSE to clean/keep clean! I gave my input to the manager with suggestion to avoid using it in other apartments. I also had to tell the guys installing it all they need to clean off the tiles before bringing them inside(they had them laying on the ground outside for a few days before)__I never had ants in my kitchen before the upgrade, now I do! 😣
They replaced the cabinets with white, multi-layered design fronts(dust collectors)__and the drawers aren't even wide enough to put a common utensil caddy inside. 😱 They all have brushed silver bar handles, and I can't even reach the second shelf of the top cabinets without a stepstool.
They installed an extra, wide, bottom and top cabinet to the right of the stove where there were none before. The problem: they are about 10in. from the adjacent window AND, the ninny installed the doors to open from the wall/window side, instead of from the stove side. 💩 😣
I did get a nice double, SS sink and beautiful green polished granite countertops ingrained with reflective specks, in place of tiling that was refinished with a coating. My new faucet also has a built-in retractable sprayer, which I love!
Interestingly, though they installed more cabinets than we previously had, we now have less 'functional' storage__go figure. 😱😒
I'll take 'old style' over 'trendy' anyday! 💖🙌😺
Love this video, agree with everything! I have a few to add, coming from experience from my days of cleaning houses: suede sofas, molding on any surface (doors, cabinets, walls) because every ridge will collect dust within a week. Fancy “stone” sinks that can’t handle any cleaning materials, and bathroom sinks that are completely floor level so that the water doesn’t poor down but instead leaves a puddle at the bottom that you can only get rid of if you shove it down the drain with your hand. Not fun to do after every hand washing or tooth brushing session
Love it, thank you for sharing these!!
Yes, the cabinets! Non ceiling height cabinets are my bane. Not only do they look unfinished, but my goodness do they collect everything.
For sure!
Great tips! I love gas cooking but as you say it’s a pain to keep clean .thank you for video 🙏🌺
You are so welcome!
These are really good tips! Definitely going to keep it in mind. We're renovating right now. We have a black sink (I think the former home owners switched it out, because it looked modern). It's beautiful, but it gets scratched and so dirty. Not so beautiful anymore. When we're changing up the old kitchen it's going.
We have a black sink here too - the funny thing is, I don't mind the sink as much as I mind the black counters!
Make sure you read easy read, "Make Your House Do the Housework" by Don Aslett. It's an old book, your library will probably have it. He tells you all the easiest faucets, moldings, furniture, etc to keep clean.
Maybe use it for a worm farm in the garden?
Agree about the matte paint. I love eggshell. It's great!
Eggshell is so great!
Matte/ flat paint is also cheaper, which is probably the REAL reason behind its use, even more than hiding imperfections. When it comes down to it, paint can only do so much. 😆
