- In a petrol bunk, you might have seen some numbers flashing along with litres, these numbers denote the quality of the fuel. The quality of gasoline is measured by octane number whereas the quality of diesel is measured by cetane number.
The whole purpose of the video is to understand what these numbers indicate, why are they so important and how are they calculated.
Octane number:
Octane number denotes the ability of the fuel to resist knocking. Higher the octane number, fewer chances of knocking. Thus, engine performance will be better. The octane number of iso-octane is 100 and n-heptane is 0. These two compounds are used as reference elements for calculating the octane number. Based on the engine operating conditions, the octane number can be measured in two scales: Research Octane Number and Motor Octane Number. The average of these two is known as Anti-knock index. The difference between these two is known as Fuel Sensitivity. Different countries use different octane ratings.
Cetane number:
Cetane number denotes how fast the fuel can be ignited. Higher the cetane number, lesser the ignition delay which eventually increases the engine performance. The reference elements for measuring cetane numbers are cetane and 2-methylnaphthalene with cetane number 100 and 0 respectively.
These numbers do not refer to the composition of the fuel. But, it indicates the quality performance of the fuel by comparing it with the fuel that is a mixture of these standard elements. Using a good quality fuel results in high engine performance.

Perfect explaination...best on YT
true
Well explain 👍
thanks, very well explained!
wow super 👍
Thank you for your feedback. You made our day! We look forward to continuing to serve you well :)
do octane number and cetane number have any relation to auto ignition temperatures:
1. iso-octane: RON100 Auto-ignition temperature: 447 degC; n-heptane: RON0 Auto-ignition temperature: 204 degC; Petrol RON 89-94, Auto ignition temperatue: 246-280 degC
2. cetane: CN100 Auto-ignition temperature: 202 degC; iso-cetane: CN15 Auto ignition temperature: ??; Diesel: CN 48-50 Auto ignition temperature: 210 degC
Great sir keep up the great work...Sir
Thanks you nice explanation
so...why was thing asked in my neet mock test?
because lecturers hate us
Nice Explanation
Very informative
nice
Good

0:59 explains everything 🥂
thanks brother.. i get it now
This topic is for My general organic chemistry JEE 😁😁 .. now i get those 👍
neet😁
i'm doing it for hydrocarbons
So fast
what if I spray water (without ethanol) into the intake, would water mixed with air and fuel lower the possibility of knocking?
It will mix and form steam which will corrode ur engine
@@HritikJain so if water is mixed with ethanol, the ethanol will act as a corrosion inhibitor?
Never heard of that, can't comment.
But yeah mixing water will reduce the temperature as water will absorb the heat and may reduce knowcking.
@@HritikJain okay, so the idea is that water without ethanol will cause engine to corrode but water mixed with ethanol will not cause engine to corrode
💯
