And as soon as the head starts to move, it receives the force of me swinging the handle plus the force of the spring that wants to go back to its neutral position, so is accelerates faster and gains more momentum. I just have to hit something before the spring is back in it's neutral position.

That's similar to those big floppy sledgehammers. They allow you to put a lot more power into your strike because you can use all your range of motion and they reduce the vibration of the hit.
