  • This 1974 color documentary about the WWI Jubilee at Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome is presented by Eastman Kodak Co. Real World War I planes are pulled out of a building at Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome for a WWI weekend flying show and WWI radio-controlled aircraft jamboree in front of a large crowd. A radio-controlled model Fokker Triplane flies by the camera. A modeler carries his Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5 (:25-1:39). Cole Palen, Rhinebeck’s owner, is interviewed. A Mid-Hudson Radio Control Society member is interviewed. Members prepare their planes. The jackets of radio control groups are shown (1:40-2:58). An X-Acto knife blade is drawn through balsa wood up-close. A hand places the tip of a glue bottle at wing joints (3:00-3:25). A modeler works in a garage full of shelves with parts. He explains the process of building a model airplane. He holds a servomechanism up to the camera, and shows how to use a transmitter to control the airplane. The wing and throttle respond as he moves the stick and lever on the transmitter (3:26-5:14). A man flies his WWI S.E.5 biplane and safely lands it (5:45-6:25). A stop watch begins the three-minute time the modeler has to get his German Rumpler Taube plane in the air. The propeller won’t start by hand so he uses an electric starter (6:26-7:09). Another puts his Albatross D-V “Red Baron” through the required maneuvers, which scored on a sheet (7:10-7:30). Different planes go through maneuvers (7:40-8:13). A close-up of a modeler using the transmitter to guide his plane is shown (8:16-8:30). A German WWI biplane takes off (8:35). A British S.E.5.A has a bomb attached to the bottom to drop on a target (8:50-9:05). Another challenge is to break balloons attached to a pole. The Taube gets tangled in it and crashes (9:07-9:37). The S.E.5.A lands (9:38). A modeler climbs a tree to retrieve a plane. The damage is examined (9:50-10:38). A dogfight ends with a crash (10:44-11:18). A hat has tiny models of WWI planes (11:26). A man holds a damaged plane and another crashes (11:47-11:52). Contestants gather around a campfire. A woman in 1970s clothing plays a guitar and sings (11:53-14:30). The next morning the full-size airplane are prepared for the airshow. Propellers are hand-spun. Views are shown of and from real WWI airplanes shown earlier in model airplane size (14:43-16:48). A man applies makeup as part of a Vaudeville act performed on the ground in vintage cars and motorcycles and in the air in a dogfight (16:53-20:30). A radio-controlled doghouse novelty aircraft includes Snoopy riding it (20:33-21:00). A photography aircraft has a Kodak Instamatic spring-wound camera in it. The modeler shows how it is activated on the transmitter (21:02-21:50). A Taylor Cub has a Super 8 Kodak movie camera attached (21:52-22:38). Planes are judged for true-to-life miniature authenticity and construction using notebooks with photographs taken by the modeler while building the plane. Close-ups of details are shown (22:45-25:25). Images of the life-size planes and the radio-controlled model planes are intermixed (25:27-26:45).

I went to an airshow at Rhinebeck, NY once in the early 1970's. They had most (if not all) of the planes there from the movie "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines"! Lots of fun! My favorite plane from that movie was the plane where the pilot sat in the landing gear under the fuselage! Looked really sporty! I bet landings in it weren't fun!

Richard Gerlach do they still continue the Rhinebeck show?? I can’t imagine a plane like you describe.
      Have a great weekend...

Yes, the Aerodrome is very much alive and kicking and there are all sorts of airplanes added to the airshows every year. Plan your visit today and come support the work we do, thanks!

What fun to find this! I was there for the meet (BTW it's the WWI JAMBOREE, not "Jubilee") that year with my Dad. I was in high school at the time, I had a 3 channel Morane-Saulnier M model, with an O.S. Max .35 engine and a Kraft radio, ready to fly that day, but it was so windy that day that I decided to leave the plane in the car as I had only flown it a few times. I vaguely recall the title of this film so I must have heard about it, but I don't think I ever actually saw it.
I flew into the Aerodrome last fall, except for the faces (RIP Cole) it hasn't changed in any important way.

Wow these models look small! Back in 1974. Biggest engine was a Supertigre
    .74 or .90 then

Back in the '90's, A&E aired a show called First Flights hosted by Neil Armstrong. They filmed several episodes here.

Full scale airshow every Saturday and Sunday during the season, weather permitting, and Radio Control Jamboree is still going strong-ALWAYS the 1st weekend after Labor day. This most recent one was the 53rd annual,

Old Rhinebeck is a Testament that wood, wire, fabric and an internal combustion engine can actually carry you aloft and bring you back to earth again.

I wonder how much of that is due to parents teaching their children to never talk to or interact with strangers because they are all evil child molesters. Those children are probably going to grow up fearing everyone except themselves.

I think if I had spent hundreds of hours building a model like that I would be way too scared to actually fly it.
