- Did you know some inner covers have two sides? One that deep and one that's shallow?
The bees will build out burr comb on the deep side if you leave it facing them, but won't build any comb if you leave the shallow side facing them.
The more you know! 🌈
This is a great beginner beekeeping video for those that need to observe bees and better understand what the bees are doing!

Why is burr comb viewed negatively?
I feel most beekeepers view it negatively simply because it’s more work to do. For us, when they start to build on the inner cover, we know we’ve already fallen behind. We should have already given them more space. It’s also a waste of the bees’ time and energy since we remove the comb from the inner cover. It is comb that could have been built in frames. Since it takes roughly 7 pounds of eating honey to make about a pound of wax, all this extra wax leads to a reduced honey yield.
@@RascalApiary Thank you. Im very interested in collecting as much wax as possible. If not from this extra comb where is the best place to collect from?
@@theohiohousewife Most beekeepers process their wax from honey callings after harvesting honey from their hives. You can also process wax from frames that have been culled due to age, but they won’t give you as much wax.
@@RascalApiary Thank you, so basically honey stores is the best place to get wax.
@@theohiohousewife Yes!
Some have notches that point up. At least that's how I use mine.
Yes. A lot of them do. They’re great for upper entrances for ventilation!
🥶 comb!
So since there are two ways to place the inner cover, is one correct and the other incorrect?
It depends on the inner cover really. Some, like we mentioned, have a shallow side and a deeper side. Generally the shallow side will go down toward the bees. If you place deep side down, there’s too much space and the bees will build burr comb.
