Even though this is a pop arrangement of Alway Mademoiselle, it is wonderful to have this souvenir from Danielle Darrieux's performance as Coco. I have a friend who saw Coco with Darrieux and he said she was absolutely wonderful - that the show took on a whole new magic with her. Listening to this song really sung reveals it to be a pretty terrific Lerner/Previn tune. Thank you!!!!
Nice to hear it sung for a change...Hepburn may have pulled in the crowds but the cast album is one headache inducing hurdle I was never able to take...
I don't know, the last lines of Hepburn's Always Mademoiselle have an undeniable power. Kind of makes me wish she had recorded some of the Brecht/Weill songs that lend themselves to that kind of sprechgesang. But yes, that album IS an unbearable headache-inducing hurdle. I know it was just her normal speaking voice but my God it sounds so forced and strained in a musical context that it's not unpleasant but actually upsetting.

Upon hear Darrieux from the stage, Lerner said to Previn: "Why Andre, you've written a musical."
