EXCELLENT video; loved the walking foot sewing machine & magnetic edge guide. I am a quilt maker & seamstress with over 50 years of sewing experience; great job to sewer & narrator, video graphics & technique! Recommend never using rotary cutter to cut towards yourself. Also, there's a resting place on top of rotary cutter handle for your index finger, for more balanced pressure while cutting; just a suggestion! Please include rotary cutter safety instructions that state why blade is always closed or covered after each cut, when putting cutter down. You DID show best reason why you place ruler on cushion fabric & not on waste fabric...excellent tip & demo. Thanks much!!!
Follow this video step for step and it is SO easy and great. We reupholstered our couch cushions in 3 hours and have never tried anything like this. Super satisfying. Thank you for the video! (note: If you dont like the zipper thought, just do a envelope opening. Its fast, easy and works perfectly)
I used this tutorial to make a new chair seat pad and footstool cushion for a used platform rocker we found at a second-hand store. Very easy to follow. Excellent results! He is right when he says that inserting the foam pad into the finished cushion is like "wrestling an alligator." So for each pad, I first made a cushion liner out of lightweight synthetic fabric and covered the foam pads before inserting them into the exterior upholstery fabric cushion covers. The permanent underlining will also make it easier to remove the chair pad and footstool cushion for cleaning, if necessary.
Great tutorial and exactly what I needed. I am making cushion covers for my neighbor and I wasn't sure how to do it with boxed corners. This is perfect and so simple to do. Thank you!!!
C'est ma première expérience sur une machine à coudre. J'ai réussi à fabriquer mes 4 coussins pour mon véhicule récréatif. Je suis très fier du résultat. Merci pour cette vidéo.
I looked through many videos for making cushions and this one stood out above all the rest. I've never done any kind of upholstering before and barely know how to use the sewing machine I borrowed (thanks to many additional Singer RUclips videos), but by carefully following these step-by-step instructions I was able to create a set of custom-sized cushions for a camper van conversion. I found it very helpful to sketch out all the dimensions for the tops and bottoms in advance to make sure my measurements were lining up as I went. I ended up using these measurements to cut out the foam and the fabric instead of using the cut foam to measure out the fabric. I also used the same fabric for the top and bottom and velcro for the back closure instead of expensive zippers. I'm so tickled with the results and love how many people are asking where I learned to do this. Thank you!
I just used this tutorial to make cushions for my cat window perches. It was so easy and they look great! I have sewing experience so I was able to follow easily along and start to finish took 5 hours for 3 covers 😍
What a great tutorial!! I'm an experienced sewer and still loved this...you have it all laid out for me!! I can just follow and do ..instead of working out all the steps/dimensions. THANK YOU for filming this.
I've watched so many youtube videos about many of my hobbies. This video is one of the best most straight forward step-by-step videos I think I've ever seen. You aren't spending 20 minutes talking about what your dog did today or how you like this basting tape because (fill in the blank for another 20 minutes), etc. Thank you! Thank you.
I’ve watched this video for what seems like the 100th time! I’m recovering interior cabin boat cushions using the existing bottom plate with the zipper already in place. So, with my iPad next to the sewing machine, this video on pause at each step and a quick prayer....it turned out perfectly! One down, three more to go! Your videos are so helpful for a rookie seamstress and I send my heartfelt thanks!
I followed along to make 6” deep cushions for outdoor chairs...thank you for making it so easy! I do not sew often at all I my cushions turned out great!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I foolishly agreed to cover cushions for a relative's RV, and I realized right away that I was over my head! I was also concerned that I wouldn't have enough fabric (faux leather), and your method of using something different for the back is PERFECT. It will save me so much fabric! I'm still not 100% comfortable about this massive project, but I definitely feel much better! Thank you again!
I'm jumping for joy! With relatively little sewing skill, I just finished covering the first cushion for our RV per your excellent step-by-step video. The result is very professional looking. I am so pleased with the products I ordered from your website. Your cushion underlining material and the basting tape, used in the video, are awesome products. The price is fair and delivery rapid. Thank you, Sailrite!
I've just bought an old Mitsubishi industrial sewing machine and can't wait to make these cushions and other Sailrite projects. Your videos are very good quality and easy to understand.
Wonderful Brian, you did so well and so clear. I put the cushion cover wrong side out and over the top and peel the fabric over and under. Found it much easier than jamming it in
Thank you so much for this! I will be making a cushion for our dogs to fit in the back seat of the truck. The seats flip up and a metal platform folds out. Love the fabric too. Will be purchasing the fabric from you folks as well. So easy!
@@SailriteDIY definitely will! My husband ended up buying theLSZ as well. 🤣. I teach sewing and do some alterations. This will be a fun machine to use.
I love this tutorial. My daughter wants me to make her a box cushion-this helped me a lot. Thank you. I am sure I will be watching this many times to get the hang of it.
This video is awesome. I bought the underlining and double sided tape (a miraculous invention!) and I finished my 2 cushions in record time. Had to laugh at myself as I was wrestling the alligator-great analogy. The cushions are perfect! Thanks for a great video.
Very helpful! The only thing I did different: my fabric frayed a lot more at the ends, so when i cut the fabric to make the zipper show, i sewed as close as i could to the zipper with a zigzag stitch, to secure the excess fabric, and then cut the rest off so it didn't get stuck in the zipper. Also for people wondering: i couldn't get a really long zipper at the store, but it's best that you do!
Just made 3 bench covers using your video. I used the same fabric for both sides and put zipper in the bottom seam, they turned out fantastic. Thank you!!
I can't believe how easy it was to follow this video and make a box cushion cover for my daughter's Murphy bed. So clear and straightforward. Thank you! Oh - and where has basting tape been my whole life?!
I love watching your video tutorials. Easy to follow step by step instructions. I must give this a try on my big dogs mattress 90cm x 200cm 13cm height. The ones I made were absolutely NOT professional looking but then they were for my furry pals 🐶 comfort who simply enjoyed their new beds. Thanks for sharing and caring.

Used your video to reupholstered my cushions for my 1981 eriba caravan and they look great!!!! Instructions were sooo clear and easy to follow. For my first time making seat covers they look amazing!!! Thank youuuuuu 😃
I was looking for a video like this! Every window in my home has a wide bench seat ...yes every window!! So I'll be busy. Thanks for the video, I saved it for later to watch. 😊
FANTASTIC Video Thank you so much you explained everything so simply and I made a cushion in an hour the hardest part was deciding which fabric to use.
I would love to be able to place a photo here of my completed glider cushion covers I made with your instructions. Turned out beautifully and brings a beautiful spot to my front porch.
You said it clearly but I just wanna double triple check. Did you really trim off 1/4 inch like they said in the video and the cover fits just right??? My first time making it and I don’t wanna screw up. The fabric is pricey. TIA.
Such a useful video! I used this to help me complete for my final project at university doing graphic arts. It was so easy to follow thank you for making this video it really helped me!
Outstanding tutorial. I’m anxious to tackle my first fabric sewing project. I’ve sewn leather for years so hopefully some of those skills will carry over.
Great video, however, I made the cushion exactly as described and once you reduce by 1/4" and then by the 3/8" seam it was VERY tight. So tight that the edges were rounded. Also, why not just cut to the size of the cushion and then use a 5/8" seam rather than reducing by 1/4" and sewing at 3/8"?
Thanks for the excellent instructions I have ventured to upholster boat seats by following the previous covers and a few other projects just by guessing what to do - but started a new project and used your instructions without a hiccup great stuff
About to attempt this now...wish me luck. After much research, I’ve purchased the parts, and materials from Sailrite. Tutorials were hands down some of the best and one of the reasons I chose to use them for everything. Thanks.
This video has helped me so much making cushions for my new house for toy closet and window seat! I kept referring back to this while making them. Really helped me with the measuring of everything so it's a nice snug fit. I actually made the top first then bottom so I know I had enough canvas fabric. The bottom I did in an envelope opening instead of zipper and out of same cloth as top. The bottom seams to stay in place and could use adhesive rug slid tape if it does slide. Thank you so much for helping me!
Thank you for making such a detailed easy to understand video. My daughter asked if It would be easy and if I could make a cushion for her bench. I said sure, while thinking to myself....I’ve never made one but I can just google it. Well after literally 2 weeks of searching I found the Sailrite video to make a quick and easy box cushion with a zipper on the side! Exactly what I was looking for. I had a good night sleep finally after dreading for two weeks about not being able to make the cushion. The next day I started my project. My zipper was a regular zipper and it was 13” shorter than the length of my cushion. I managed to figure out how to sew the extra fabric that went beyond the zipper. However, I can’t thank you enough for supplying the calculator to figure the exact measurements. I thought I had it correctly measured before I found Sailrite, but the true measurements from your calculator saved my project from being ruined. Another great idea was to use basting tape...timesaver for sure! Thank you again for your very helpful video. My bench cushion turned out perfect!! Sincerely Judi
Exactly the video i was looking for! the 30 min cushion is NOT so 30 min for an amateur. The way this was put together makes ME even think i can do it! Thank you!
This was a very easy to understand tutorial. I'm about to make my window seat cushions and I think it will look much more professional thanks to your video. Thanks!
Great video, good and clear instructions. I just scaled this up a little bit and made a queen size boat mattress where one long side is a couple of inches shorter than the other. It becomes a little tricky if you have to sew two pieces of fabric together to make for the 60-inch width. But if you stick to the instructions it becomes clear how to manage that.
The top plate incorporates the boxing as you see in the video. However, let’s break it down in smaller steps to hopefully explain it better. At 9:56 min Brian traces around the foam which is already ¼” larger than the opening it fits into. This creates a top plate which is the exact size of the foam. Next at 10:10 min Brian measure the thickness of the foam and then takes away ¼” from that thickness. The boxing is not as wide as the foam by ¼”. True the 3/8” seam allowance is not taken into account intentionally because we want a tight fitting cover. So… the ¼” (which was taken away) and the 3/8” seam allowance that will soon happen to sew the bottom plate on, will take away about 5/8” of the overall size of the boxing making the cover fit very tight, which is what we want. This helps, pull the incorporated facing/boxing (facing included on the top plate) down, so the bottom plate fabric does not creep up and show itself along the bottom edge when the cushion is finished.
This one without piping much much easier and the narrator way more clear. Do you have any other videos with a simple box cushion like this? I need all the videos I can get.
Great tutorial. I plan to use this to make a cushion for a bench I use at my sewing table. A couple of tips - be very careful with the rotary cutter. The cutter should be pushed away from you will cutting (I noticed you cut toward yourself). And the blade should be closed any time the cutter is not actively cutting. Keeping the blade open while repositioning the ruler and/or fabric increases the risk of hitting either open skin or other materials.
I believe the purpose of this is to allow the cushion to be slightly compressed which would help keep the shape of the fabric without wrinkling or moving too much
Prep to completion was way more than an hour! I only like sticky tape for zipper. Otherwise, I find its a mess. I miscalc'd one cushion but easy fix and actually came out extra night. Thx for great instructions, although I lined up my box on the edge of material and subtracted .50", instead of wasting material, and cutting an entire back box minus .25. Did same for addition. Lined to side. No waste! NownI have extra material to make matching lumbar pillows!!!
Thank you for this great video! It clarified some things for me and also gave me some ideas. I'm looking at making new covers for my motorhome and this was exactly what I needed. I do have some questions : is it possible to use the same fabric on the bottom and instead of cutting the bottom plate to keep it as a one piece and only cut and sow corners and the zipper? And also regarding the zipper is it possible to replace it with an envelope type of closure? I've never seen it done in upholstry only in pillow cases. If someone with some experience would be kind enough to answer I would highly appreciate it. Thank you!
OK, great video. But! The thickness of the foam was 3 inches. Why ? Did you cut the end material at 2 and 3/4 inches. Isn't the cushion now only 2 and 3/4 inches thick and not 3 inches. At the end you measured width and length, but not thickness. I'm just assuming it's for a nice tight fit. I'm currently reupholstering my caravan cushions and this video has given me the confidence.
Hi. Love this video!! Thank you. Can someone explain why we add a quarter inch to the size of the foam beyond our actual dimension measurements or have I got that wrong?
Thank you for this great tutorial. I learned so much. I especially liked the commentator adding tips and the displayed notes. Easy breezy and I'm going to attempt to make our seat cushions! Getting on your site to order materials/tools. Thanks again. Great job.
Great video! Easy to follow instructions! I have an old patio set of furniture with sofa and 4 chairs (bottom and back square cushions). I wanted to cover them but the process in other vids looked too complicated. This looks easy! I will try it!
Made my window seat foam following your directions and it's come out amazing thank you for your video, I now know what it means to wrestle a crocodile lol
I wrap the cushion in plastic and take a vacuum cleaner and suck it down. Makes it a lot easier stuffing the foam. I like the zipper in the back and the same fabric on the bottom so it’s reversible.
I've used this to make several cushions and it's great! But now I need to do an inside corner on one of my cushions? How would I prepare the top plate for that?
I'm going to try this for an old toy box with hinged lid that I'm using as a coffee table/ottoman. I'll probably put small magnets on the bottom of the cushion and the lid of the toy box so it won't fall off when I open it. Whatcha think? I might try hiding the magnets on the toy box or keeping them flush with the wood. Thanks for the great tutorial!
Thank you, this is the easiest and very best pattern to make a Box Cushion! I have watched all the Sailrite videos, and pretty much everything else on this topic here on RUclips. The one thing that I am having a problem figuring out is whether or not I should include a seam allowance. My material is a patterned, heavy vinyl. By just folding it in half for the Zipper Plate (and pressed with Cotton Setting and *Tissue Paper) I loose almost a 1/4" in the width in the bending, and that cut down the seam allowance that I should be attaching the Zipper to. My high density foam is only 2.5", but I placed a softer 1/2" foam on both sides of the cushion to lower the Bounce. I almost bounced right off. LOL Got to worry about Grandma! I would really appreciate your professional opinion! Thanks!
Sounds like you are making a "traditional box cushion" and not using the techniques in this video "A Quick and Easy Box Cushion". I will go with that assumption when answering your questions. When cutting the boxing for a "traditional box cushion" you would typically cut it so it is the same thickness of the foam plus 1/4" to 3/4" (Adding 3/4" Example: 4" foam would have a cut boxing width of 4 3/4"). When you sew this boxing to the top and bottom plate your seam allowance will use up almost 1" of the boxing making the boxing slightly smaller than the width of the foam. The foam typically will compress slightly allowing the cover to fit very snug, which makes it look and perform very well. If using a very firm and dense foam (does not compress much) then you may want to add more for the overall boxing width. Let me know if you have more questions.
Hi, thank you so very much for getting back to me so quickly. I tried your Bull Nose cushion first. I guess it is the foam. I couldn't get it to form a bull nose despite making the over all length of the material 1" shorter. LOL I will now call the first attempt a Muslin! I've have a heavy duty sewing machine, but this vinyl was extremely hard to sew and I ended up only being able to use my Walking Foot. It was impossible to make the piping! Amazing that I was able to get the Zipper attached to the plaquet at all! Without a seam allowance for this material my cover was super hard to get over the foam, but it still looked pretty good! Thanks!!!! The pattern on the material works great with my Leather Love Seat (5 years old) which wasn't made with High Density Foam. Sad smile! Grandma (83) was broken with Charley Horses after sitting on it for 1/2 hr. Thank you again. I going to stick with this easy pattern, but add 3/4" Seam Allowance to the top plate. I imagine that I will be done by 12 Noon today. You should smile then, knowing you have a happy student! You should talk more about your company and what you do! Sewing doesn't come naturally to some of us and what we see in Cataloged isn't always what we want. Custom is awesome!

Wow, good job! We are glad that our video helped.
Exactly the video i was looking for! the 30 min cushion is NOT so 30 min for an amateur. The way this was put together makes ME even think i can do it! Thank you!
Thanks! Very easy to follow! I’m going to use your instructions to make a window seat cushion cover.
Glad you liked it. Hope your window seat cushion project goes very well.
That worked so well using an electric knife and the table to cut the foam. Thanks
This was a very easy to understand tutorial. I'm about to make my window seat cushions and I think it will look much more professional thanks to your video. Thanks!
Best tutorial on foam cushions I've seen. Thank you!
Thanks! Let us know if you have questions.
Can someone explain why the cover is 1/2" too small but still works? Is it standard practice to take 1/4" off both the top and bottom like that?
Try this "Box Corner" cushion technique: www.sailrite.com/30-minute-box-corner-cushion
This is a fantastic video. I love the camera work, lighting, sound and editing. I also liked the slides of each step and extra information.
Fabulous tutorial. Well done!! Can't wait to get sewing!
Glad you liked it!
Thank you. Your instructions help out alot and was able to get my cushions done before the 4th of July.
Your narrator was awesome. Thank you! This is super easy! I'm so excited!
Thank you for this video! I just ordered what I need in order to complete this cushion. Looking forward to the results!!
Glad you liked it and thanks for the helpful recommendations.
Thank you so much for the tutorial, I have managed to upcycle my late uncle's telephone table and make a box cushion to finish it off :-)
Great idea for saving labor in making rectangular cushions, thanks guys!
+Sue W I am glad you liked it. Let us know if you have questions about the project.
am i thick? i don't understand why you minus 1/4 inch from the bottom plate AND the top plate. doesn't that make the whole thing too small?
I believe the purpose of this is to allow the cushion to be slightly compressed which would help keep the shape of the fabric without wrinkling or moving too much
I used the exact measurements without any extra seam allowance OR taking it in. And it worked out perfectly. No wrinkling.
Thank you so so much. Very easy & perfact tutorial. We are going to try for our daughter.
Have fun!
Brilliant video, thanks heaps, so easy and so well explained. Now to put it into practice!
Glad it was helpful!
Great job.
Thanks! These free videos are only made possible from loyal customers like you. Thanks for your purchase of tools and supplies!!!!
Great video! Easy to follow instructions! I have an old patio set of furniture with sofa and 4 chairs (bottom and back square cushions). I wanted to cover them but the process in other vids looked too complicated. This looks easy! I will try it!
Wonderful! Yes, this is a much easier approach to making cushion covers. Let us know if you have any questions.
Great job! This looks like a good project for the beginner upholsterer!
It is an excellent project for a beginner.
Made my window seat foam following your directions and it's come out amazing thank you for your video, I now know what it means to wrestle a crocodile lol
Fantastic advice. Always cut from the outside of the shape!
Absolutely!
Thank you so much for this great and easy to follow tutorial!
Your welcome!
going to use this patern to make a cover for my memory foam massage table topper. Thank you fhd the helpful video :)
I wrap the cushion in plastic and take a vacuum cleaner and suck it down. Makes it a lot easier stuffing the foam. I like the zipper in the back and the same fabric on the bottom so it’s reversible.
Thanks for a clear lesson on how to do this!
Your welcome!
Great tutorial i must say .... will start my campervan cushions very soon 👍
I've used this to make several cushions and it's great! But now I need to do an inside corner on one of my cushions? How would I prepare the top plate for that?
This tutorial was perfect. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for this video, the best one !. Even I manage to sew this. Please make a video on making dinner table cloth (oval)
We do have this video for a table runner: ruclips.net/video/SpWTvu6L344/видео.html
Wonderfully explained and simple design and pattern thank you.
Usually magnets are not used in cushions since if they are sat on they can sometimes be felt. So.... most people use Hook and Loop Velcro.
I am so impressed! I love it! Can't wait to make my own cushions! :D
Great video! First time making cushion covers, they turned out beautifully!
Excellent! Good job!!!
very well done! thank you for such a clear demonstration.
I'm glad you found the demonstration clear and helpful!
Your tutorial is good man, thanks.
I LOVE these tutorials!!!
Thank you, this is the easiest and very best pattern to make a Box Cushion! I have watched all the Sailrite
videos, and pretty much everything else on this topic here on RUclips.
The one thing that I am having a problem figuring out is whether or not I should include a seam allowance.
My material is a patterned, heavy vinyl. By just folding it in half for the Zipper Plate (and pressed with Cotton Setting
and *Tissue Paper) I loose almost a 1/4" in the width in the bending, and that cut down the seam allowance that I should be attaching the Zipper to.
I couldn't get it to form a bull nose despite making the over all length of the material
1" shorter.
Sewing doesn't come naturally to some of
us and what we see in Cataloged isn't always what we want. Custom is awesome!
Great step by step tutorial, just finished my cushion and looks great!
Great job!
sooo easy to understand! Thank you for the great tutorial!
You're very welcome!
Brian, very impressive. Like the way you wrestled the foam, Crocodile Dundee would be proud. 🤣
