Thank you so much. I am a 70 year old retired truck driver who doesn’t know how to sew, but with the help f your video I’m going to make new cushions for our porch swing. God bless you.
I have seriously watched about 200 cushion videos, in an attempt to make my sister a cushion for her wheelchair. NO ONE has explained as easily as you have. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I'm scrapping the one I have cut out in SIX pieces and starting over!
I've been scouring the net for a detailed tutorial. I watched several with no luck....until I found YOU!!! I'm a beginner and this was so good and I was able to easily follow along. I appreciate you! Thank you so much!
I’m an extreme amateur sewer and this tutorial just helped me do six cushions with ease. Thanks so much for putting this video out there. I’ll be referring it to anyone who admires my handy work!
This is the first tutorial I've seen , and boy , judging by the comments did I get lucky ? This is first class instruction, thank you , you've made my day.
I am an amateur sewer and this was an amazingly simple tutorial. I measured the 1st cushion wrong, but the last two were correct. I am going to rip the 1st cushion out and redo it, now that I understand better. Perfect tutorial. Thank you so much.
I have watched so many tutorials on how to sew a box cushion cover and none of the videos made any sense to me BUT then I came across your video and you just made it click in my brain! Thank you so so so much! 🥰
Just wanted to say thank you for this video!! I am a total novice (this was my first project ever) and I was able to completely transform a $100 FB marketplace sofa and chair with new cushions. I even used the pattern to make the back cushion cover inserts (just didn’t add a zipper) and everything came out so beautifully. Can’t thank you enough!
I built an outdoor couch last year and bought foam and outdoor fabric to make cushions and finally bought a sewing machine this year. This tutorial makes it seem not as daunting as I first thought. I'm excited to get started.
Just finished my bench and seat cushions following a diff RUclips where u sew in the 5” border. What a pain! Sewing around the corners was so hard. Zipper went on one side and I wished it went around the corners! Placed cushion in a plastic bag to slip in otherwise it would’ve been almost impossible to insert. I wish I had seen this tutorial sooner! Live n learn. Im deleting other saved videos. This is 5 star! 👏👏👏
Thank you so much fornthis video. Iam a novice with a sewing machine and I whipped up my cushions in no time. My family thinks I am a hero😁. I viewed your video multiple times so I would get it right the first time. I made a template and just went for it. So easy and so perfect 🏆
Thank goodness! I have watched several videos and they were so confusing acting like the viewer already knew how to do this. Your instructions were well thought out and clearly demonstrated. I'm out to shop for cushion fabric now!!!!
Thank you!!! I watched this multiple times. I am a very beginner sewer, and I couldn't grasp the part about cutting the inside corners at all. BUT I did a "practice" cushion and it worked! To the other people out there questioning if she misspoke about the seam allowance numbers, she DID NOT! To put it another way, (thickness - 1) / 2 = D distance you are measuring out from the THREAD LINE (not the edge) AS WELL AS the folded fabric edge. When you sew and leave another .5 inches on each side, that is how you get back to your total thickness.
Thanks for confirming this! I posted the other day that I didn't understand the inside corner either, but after I read your post, I decided to do a "practice corner" using paper and tape and it all made sense after that. Cutting a piece of 2x2 would only give you 4" depth, but when you go in 1/2 in seam allowance, you get an extra inch of depth. If that's still confusing to you guys, go ahead and do a practice corner--it only takes 2 minutes and it will clear everything up.
Excellent video! So easy to follow, I see now that I have been doing all wrong till now. I wasted so much fabric, time, and frustration till I found your video. Thanks so much!
I made my very first boxed custom cushion for my Land Rover camper using this technique and video. It's the first time I've ever sewed a zip into something too. Worked out fantastic. (Three more cushions to do and I'm looking even more forward to completing them). Thank you so much!!!
Your video was so easy to follow! Thank you for teaching an old dog a new trick!!! I would never have tried to cover cushions until I found your video!! Thank you!
Girl, you have just made my day! That is BRILLIANT! And as a former English teacher, who often had students write “process” papers, you get an A+ for clarity & an excellent sense of audience awareness! Extremely helpful! Now I can tackle that fabric I’ve had washed & ready to go for months. Thanks a bunch!
I’m so proud of my Box Cushion with zipper Can’t Thank You enough I’m old now my thinking sometimes don’t do well. This helped so much retired sewing machine operator back in the 60 when we made everything 😘🌻🌻🙋🏼♀️🙋🏼♀️
I know this is not a new video but just wanted to post a THANK YOU. I was able to make four bench cushions with zippers, I have always avoided projects that need zippers. Tip: I made a 2x2.5 template for cutting the box corners after the zipper was attached and labeled the edge that was to go along the fold, for me that was the longer edge. No confusion and went quicker. Since I was making bench cushions I had to use the long side whenever you said the short side. Another tip for those making bench cushions: work out your measurements carefully. I first chose 45” wide fabric but would have had sooooo much wasted fabric in order to fit 47” wide cushions, needed almost 3yds per cushion. Getting 54” wide fabric was much better, needing less than 1.5yds per cushion. Again, thank you for your clear instructions, I really was able to make them. Your video was encouraging and enabling.
THIS was the video that made me confident enough to finally tackle my project. Thank you! I made the mistake of considering my batting as part of the cushion height on my first cover. I used 4inch high foam wrapped in batting that added another 1-1.5 inches of fluff, so I thought "the end height will be 5 inches" and used this in my fabric cutting calculations. This cover turned out to be baggy, so I did the rest of my measurements based off of the foam's 4 inch height and the covers came out beautiful and snug.
I really appreciated your video! Made a long bench cushion (and two back cushions) for my daughter's dorm and was originally not going to do the long zipper up the sides, but after my struggle to fit the wrapped cushions into a thin cotton casing with practically the entire back seam opened, I decided to do it your way for the final cushion covers, and it was so much easier. I used a concealed zipper method, but that was the only difference. They came out beautifully!
I think I love you! I just built one from another fabric store video. I could not get the cover over the 5 in. cushion using a velcro opening. It had welting and everything, and this was so much better and easier!! I have to make a bunch, as it sounds like you do as well. Thank you, Thank you!
Makes perfect sense! One done, 4 to go! Corners are a little tricky to understand but as soon as you start put it together makes perfect sense!!! Good tutorial!!
This worked perfectly. I was a bit confused about the measurements for the corners as they differed, but the authors replies to other comments made the math clear and easy to translate to my project.
i CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR THIS INCREDIBLY DETAILED AND EASY TO FOLLOW AMAZING VIDEO!!!!!!!!!! You helped me help a friend when I didn't know exactly how I was going to fix her patio chair cushion. I was going to just wing it but instead I gave her a professional (as professional as an amateur upholesterer can be) looking patio cushion!!! SOOOOO HAPPY...THANK YOU!!!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I just completed my first box cushion. It's not perfect (zipper is a wee bit wonky), but it's so much better than what we were using. I had no idea how to accomplish this, but you made it so clear with your excellent instruction - from measuring and cutting to installing the zipper, sewing up corners and even putting it onto the cushion (the second hardest part). Whew. Thanks!
Thank you so much for taking the time to share this with the rest of us. I enjoyed the video and learned a lot, including the difference in zippers. I never even considered the different options. You are clearly very skilled and watching your speed, vs my own, reminds me that I’ve got a lot of practice ahead of me. I’m a mid 40s man who is always trying to learn something new. I purchased my “project runway-Brother” machine a few years ago but was soon sidetracked with 3D printing as my winter project. I’m hoping that someday one of my daughters will come to me for help sewing something. By then I hope to be able to show off my superb sewing/ upholstery skills and blow their minds. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and experience.
I have been trying to find a tutorial to be able to make one of these box cushions for outside fabric and I have watched many of them. Your tutorial is so well done that even a beginner could make one. Thank you I appreciate this tutorial so much.
Thank you sooo much! I'm such a beginner, I had to refer to the instructions to do the bobbin thing and thread the needle etc but then used your tutorial for my first ever cushion and couldn't be more pleased with it, your instructions were so clear that I could adapt them for my own project.
I love your video!!! I don't sew much, so sewing can be very intimidating to me. Your instructions video helped me make 2 cushions for my window seat. Thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!!!
Here it is spring of 2021 & I have put off sewing cushions for my patio furniture...well now getting a new side patio constructed & no more procrastinating🤷🏻♀️! This is as simple as it gets & love the simplicity of it too. Your step by step & thoroughly explanation was very appreciated! Thanks so much! Greetings from sunny California 😎🌞!
As others have said, this is is one of the best tutorials out there! So easy to follow and my cover came out perfectly first time! Now only another 11 to go! It's a really clever design - thank you.
This was an amazing tutorial! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have recently purchased a used Janome and LOVE it! Started making masks for family and friends and donated to whoever needed one. I am loving sewing again and recently started looking for outdoor chair cushions and didnt realize they were so expensive. I am TOTALLY on board with trying to make my own. Thanks again!!!!!!
Brilliant tutorial for a novice like me . I need visual instructions and I had 2 pieces of fabric but followed your instructions and bingo ! Waterproof cover for my daughters garden bench . I must have measured and checked fit soooo many times. Very pleased and chuffed with myself but could not have achieved it without your help . I even added piping
Omg! You are an like an angel to me. I was struggling for like 6 months to do a cushion. And I saw this video today and it changed my life. Such a great tutorial, it's just awesome 😍 Thank You So Much 😘🔥👍🏻
Wow!!! Because of your video I was able to make an L -shape cover. So proud of myself due to getting the measurements right😅. Thank you so much❤❤❤from South Africa
I am so thankful I found your tutorial! I had outdoor cushions to cover and I had no idea how to do it. I had to watch several times but the end result is my outdoor furniture looks like new! Thank you so much for posting this.
I've been wanting to recover the cushions on my "vintage" sofa, chairs, and ottoman for years. It's a daunting project since there's 11 huge cushions to do. Liked and saved the video for when I'm ready. Gotta do a bunch of math, and find a load of the perfect fabric and zippers. Thank you!
This was awesome. I have to make some new cushions for my boat and this was definitely the simplest way to do it. I'm using Sumbrella fabric and an old Singer 201. Your steps are easy to follow and leave minimum waste.
THANK YOU so much for this tutorial! I made a bunch of box cushions following your directions and they came out so nicely. Both the cutouts in the zipper corner and the box corner are confusing at first, but follow the directions exactly and it works!! I took another person's advice and did it on a scrap piece of fabric and that is when it all makes perfect sense. Keep the tutorials coming please :)
I have a long foam matress that my dog loves and it needed a new cover and your tutorial was fantastic. I bought the really long zipper and made it and it came out really good. Thanks for your tutorial
I just did 8 of these as my first sewing project ever and they turned out great! This video was really easy to follow. Thanks for taking the time to put it up!
OMG!!! Once I got past calculating my 27” x 21 1/4” x 5”, which took quite some time, my first cushion turned out perfect! I made an inside cover and used Velcro. A zipper for the outside cover. Awesome detail explanation. It’s appreciated.
. I decided to make covers for an outdoor furniture set and discovered this video. This is my favorite video for sewing. It has been a long time since I have sewn anything, so this was perfect instruction. Thank you
Great video! I'm an older single guy getting ready to live in my RV and I'm thinking about buying a sewing machine and redoing all the cushion covers in the RV.
This is the best video I came across! I found another video describing corners only which was great too. I started practicing with an environmentally friendly canvas drop cloth, minus the zipper. It actually looks nice. I used 5 inch foam with half inch Dacron. It's a little on the firm side. This is a 1960-70's cushion redo from my grandparents old wood den set. Thanks again!
This was such an amazing tutorial. I’m very new to sewing, this is only my second project and you made it so easy to follow! I re-covered some cushions for my travel trailer. I’m so proud of the covers I made and my husband was very impressed! Keep the tutorials coming!
I have watched this several times ( my brain just can’t remember) to complete a sectional couch reupholstery project. Using Velcro instead - but your video has helped me immensely! Thank you!
Awesome tutorial! I was going to just turn my outdoor fabric into a huge, long pillowcase for my 6' bench cushion (×2 for seat and back) till I found your tutorial! Thank you for telling us the thread you used. I might've used regular thread. It's been about 20 years since I've done any sewing. I'm a little nervous about the project, but I'm sure with your tutorial, I can do it! Thanks again!
I'm thinking of making a new slip cover for a beddinge futon and wanted to get a sense for these corners. I appreciate the tutorial. Pretty fabric. Nice to know it's that easy to cover cusions.
Great, easiest tutorial. Finally made my patio chair cushion covers went a little overboard and purchased new foam from this Etsy shop Foam Global if you need foam they also cut to size. Thanks 👍
I made this today and it worked out really well. I was a bit confused on the final length of the cutting instructions, but I figured it out. My pillow was a 17” x 15” x 3”. My final cut piece was 37” long by 21” wide. (17 + 3 + 1) and (15 +15 +3 +3 + 1). It came out very nice.
Ruth Alvarez according to your math, it seems that you have doubled the width and not the length as discussed in the video. Does it make a difference which side is doubled?
Linda Balkovec The reason I did that, which was confusing at first, was because it was a chair cushion and the width of the chair was wider than the depth of the chair and my fabric had a specific pattern direction unlike yours. Regardless, it came out great!
Ruth Alvarez Thanks for clarifying. I just completed my cover and I ended up doubling the width because my fabric wasn’t long enough to double in length. And then this gave me enough fabric to make 2 covers. My fabric was double sided with 2 colours, so it all worked out! 😊👍
Hi Ruth, can you please explain the corners. She cuts out a 2.5" x 2.5" corner. Taking off the 0.5" it seems like she's ending up with a 4" deep cushion. What am I missing here? It doesn't seem like I'm the only one confused about this.
Leanne Peggram I don’t know if I can explain it, but if your cushion depth is 6 inches, you would cut those boxed corner squares at 3” because when you put the top and bottom together, it equals 6”. So, your fit is snug but it comes out correct. In addition, when you fold over the corner to sew the 1/2” seam allowance, it does dot affect the height of the boxed cushion. Cut a square out of a corner of a fabric, try 3”, and sew it the 1/2” for practice. Once you sew it, measure the height and you will see that the seam allowance does not affect the height of the final product. In my example, it remains 3” in height and when I put both sides together, I have the 6” depth required by the cushion. The 1/2 seam allowance affects the size of the squared box, but not the height of it. It is as if you take a blouse and decide to take in the sides of the blouse by 1/2 inch. You will not affect the height (length) of the blouse by sewing the sides. I hope it makes sense.
I’ve been sewing for about 50 years, never thought todo zippers like that, thank you. One thought for fraying fabric, just zig zag if you don’t have a serger. Thales a bit more time and thread but worth it, especially on edges you zipper. I also spray with Scotch Guard, resists stains & moisture.
Thank you for sharing this tutorial! I used muslin for my first (trial) cushion cover to make sure I had all my measurements correct and to practice putting in the zipper. My second, fashion fabric, cushion cover turned out perfectly!
Greate tutorial. Thanks Christina. I use this video as basic to create boxed cushions cover without zipper. I do not like zipper on cushions cover; they break, get stuck, rust, etc. In place of zipper I let the fabric overlap. Btw it is my first project.
That was AWESOME! That has to be the easiest way to make a cushion cover that I have ever seen! I love this. Easy instructions and thorough! Thank you!
This is exactly the tutorial that I needed! I have to make a yoga cushion cover for a customer and I have been trying to figure out the easiest way. Thanks!
I had tried to find the right size cushions for an antique frame for years. You showed me how to do it myself! If I could figure out how to do it, I'd send you a picture! Thank you!
What an excellent tutorial! Thank you so much for this great video. I’m making two cushions for me and my husband and one for our 18 year old poodle/bishon so she can be more comfortable.
Soy una mujer ama de casa Nicaraguense que ama el arte de la tapiceria, he logrado aprender gracias a personas como tú que comparten sus métodos de costura. Me gusta este método muy práctico para elaborar los forros de cojines con zipper. Ahora mucho tiempo.
Thanks to this awesome video I now have a wonderful fresh chair in my living room. Thank you! I couldn’t understand some of the measurements so took a leap of faith and just did what you said and it worked out perfectly so thank you so much.
SUPER informative - well done, and thanks much. I used tutorial to make a dog cushion from closed cell foam and cordura for the duck boat. The folks who left negative comments are either not very bright or just plain jerks. Yeesh. Thanks again!
Thank you -this is a genius method for a boxed cushion cover. I need to make a cover for my dog's bed, which of course is taken on and off quite a bit because it gets dirty, and the long around-the-corner zipper is going to be great for that!
You are AMAZING!! I was going to do this the hard way! I have 14 cushions and this will make my life so much easier. And you are so right about using a longer zipper!!
I want to thank you so much for an amazing tutorial! I have used this tutorial multiple times and I really have had the best box corner results thanks to your video.
Great tutorial!! Thanks for sharing. I made covers for my cushions a couple years ago and it was a royal pain. Yours look so easy and understandable that I think I’m willing to give it another go!
I made 24x36x3 cushions based off this tutorial and they turned out great! I just want to say thank you so much and keep the tutorials coming! You did an excellent job explaining how do everything. FYI- I've never sewed anything in my life! (I used Brother sewing machine XM2701 MODEL.)
Thank you so much. I am a 70 year old retired truck driver who doesn’t know how to sew, but with the help f your video I’m going to make new cushions for our porch swing. God bless you.

I’m an extreme amateur sewer and this tutorial just helped me do six cushions with ease. Thanks so much for putting this video out there. I’ll be referring it to anyone who admires my handy work!
How much fabric total did you buy? Looking to redo cushions myself but have no clue as to how much yardage I'm looking at.
This is the first tutorial I've seen , and boy , judging by the comments did I get lucky ?

What were the dimensions of the cut you made on the folded corner? My pandemic brain is having trouble! Was it 2" x 1.5"?
@schneiderfest Yes, I cut 2 x 1.5. Good luck!
Totally agree with your huge support and adoration from these followers. I’ve watched many other videos but yours is the best!

Amazing. I've been trying to decipher the sailrite calculator for 6 hrs and two disastrous practice covers. Thank god! Now I can finally start!!!!!
Me too. Went to sailrite and cut per their calculator dimensions but doesn't work with this method. So confused.

Omg! You are an like an angel to me. I was struggling for like 6 months to do a cushion. And I saw this video today and it changed my life. Such a great tutorial, it's just awesome 😍 Thank You So Much 😘🔥👍🏻
I have two cushions to make box covers for and your tutorial is the easiest I have found to explain this process! Thank you!!
Thank you for this excellent tutorial. My bench cushions turned out beautifully! Thanks to you.
I have a long foam matress that my dog loves and it needed a new cover and your tutorial was fantastic. I bought the really long zipper and made it and it came out really good. Thanks for your tutorial
This is the best tutorial I have ever watched. Simple clear instructions ending with a great cushion. Well done and thank you.
Thank you so much!!! I followed all your instructions and-- Voila! These cushions were done in a jiffy!
FYI, girlie, I'm successful & have made 2 so far today!! Thank u again!!
BEST tutorial I've seen! You took such care to show each step repeatedly and clearly! Will definitely be doing this! Thank you!
This was such an amazing tutorial. I’m very new to sewing, this is only my second project and you made it so easy to follow! I re-covered some cushions for my travel trailer. I’m so proud of the covers I made and my husband was very impressed! Keep the tutorials coming!
That has to be the best tutorial I've seen on RUclips, and I've watched a lot, u make it so easy to follow, I'm gonna make mine this weekend, 🥰
I have watched this several times ( my brain just can’t remember) to complete a sectional couch reupholstery project. Using Velcro instead - but your video has helped me immensely! Thank you!

WOW, you just saved me hours of sewing. So clear, so clever. I'm recovering camper cushions and this will make it so simple. Thanks!
I watched a lot of box cushion tutorials in my quest to recover my sofa, this one is perfect. Simple to follow with great results. Thank you so much
Awesome tutorial!
Thanks 👍
First RUclips video I have EVER seen where EVERY SINGLE COMMENT IS POSITIVE! congrats!👍🏽👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you so much!, been watching tutorials for a year…found yours soooo easy to follow..fantastic..
So glad to hear that, thank you!
You are a genius! Thank you so much for this video. This is exactly what I was after and your instructions were so articulate. Thanks again!
Thanks!
Mam Your guidance and expectation is too good, anyone can understand that you explain, thank you very much to share this, 🙏🙏🙏
I had tried to find the right size cushions for an antique frame for years. You showed me how to do it myself! If I could figure out how to do it, I'd send you a picture! Thank you!
THANK YOU A MILLION TIMES FOR THIS TUTORIAL. YOU ARE WONDERFUL AND A BEAUTIFUL SOUL.
Thank you so much !! My cushion is a yoga bolster and I followed you every step adjusting my measurements as you said and it turned out great !!
Thanks for this demonstration. I'm going to try this out. Glad I saw your video first. You explain very well and timely. I appreciate this.
Thank you so much for this video, It saved me so much money over having to pay someone to do this for me! My cushions turned out beautiful!!!!
Woo hoo I did it.... Thank you so much for making this video. Mine turned out so good.
Thanks so much for this tutorial! I am off to make cushion covers for my new to me RV!! Much appreciated!
Super tutorial, only a clever person could make this look easy and be for us beginners.thank you ❤️
Great tutorial!! Thanks for sharing. I made covers for my cushions a couple years ago and it was a royal pain. Yours look so easy and understandable that I think I’m willing to give it another go!
You’re amazing!! I’m going to try this for my couch cushions. My first attempt! Yayyy!
I almost threw away my cushions. Thank God I didn’t. I’m trying this. Amazing video. THANK YOU.
Hi could I ask u with your cushion having different width and length how did you measure
Great way to recover a cushion. Took me only 20 minutes to sew. Thank you.
Genius! Your tutorial is so informative!
Fabulous! Thank you! Just got a used set with white cushions. 2 dogs, no bueno. Now I can recover when they kill the 'white'!
