I really appreciated your video! Made a long bench cushion (and two back cushions) for my daughter's dorm and was originally not going to do the long zipper up the sides, but after my struggle to fit the wrapped cushions into a thin cotton casing with practically the entire back seam opened, I decided to do it your way for the final cushion covers, and it was so much easier. I used a concealed zipper method, but that was the only difference. They came out beautifully!

Great video and instructions but I'm pulling my hair out over the zipper. As mentioned, unless your zipper is wide, even staying as close to the zipper as possible I can't get the half inch seam allowance. You did mention this. My question though is when you do the side seams do you use a half inch seam allowance and then taper it in when you get close to zipper to match that? That is hanging me up. It doesn't seem to be an issue for anyone else so I'm wondering what I'm missing. It seems no matter what, it's going to mess up how the cover fits. Thank you.

Hi there. From making one of these myself (I’m pretty new to sewing), using this video as my guide, I don’t think you need the 1/2 in seam allowance when you are sewing in the zipper. In fact, you want to get as close to the zipper teeth aa possible when you sew it in. If I understand your comment. There is no need to taper the sides. Just use the half inch all the way down the side. But remember to already have the ends of zipper (with the zipper closed, both ends of the actual zipper working parts) clipped/pinned so it’s out & away from itself. Then you start the side seams with a half inch seam allowance all the way down to that clip as close as you can get, leave your needle down, lift the presser foot, turn it 90 degrees & sew out and back a couple times…but stay within the half inch area. The tail pieces on both ends of the zipper, the part that is just fabric, should already be sewn up at an angle which will keep them tucked away once you sew the side seams. I had trouble at first because I couldn’t visualize it and it felt like it wouldn’t work out. But if you go slow it will work out. Might take a couple tries to get it close & turn the fabric enough to get it right. But you can do it. Hope this helps. Though as I’m reading back over this, it might not make sense to anyone other than myself! Good luck!

@@unclesamsniece2064 Thank you so much for kindly taking the time. It's been a bit now so I'm not following exactly. Mine turned out okayish but I wasn't happy with it. I needed to make a couple more, and I just didn't get it so searched for another method and was able to use as that as my zipper wasn't going around the sides. In that one you put the zipper in earlier, which worked better for me personally and by the third one I was happy with it. I'm sure I could have eventually figured it out by this method but I was frustrated and no one else seemed to have an issue with it so I figured I was totally missing something. I loved the video though and except for the zipper for me it was otherwise very clear. Ultimately I combined things from this video and the other one I found. Thanks again for taking the time. I appreciate it.

To put a cushion cover on I put the foam cushion in a garbage bag. Insert it with the open end of the garbage bag in. Fold the whole thing in half if necessary. When the foam is in place pull the bag off of the foam and out of the cushion cover. Works pretty good

Both your original boxed cushion tutorial plus this updated version are wonderful. I have watched so many videos, and your videos make the most sense to my brain by far! Thank you!! However, I'm struggling because my fabric is only 54" wide and my cut material needs to be 57x57 according to your formulas. I need to add a seam somewhere to get to 57", but I'm struggling with the math and where to add the seam so it doesn't show. Do you have any other videos or recommendations? Thanks!

I’ve been sewing for about 50 years, never thought todo zippers like that, thank you. One thought for fraying fabric, just zig zag if you don’t have a serger. Thales a bit more time and thread but worth it, especially on edges you zipper. I also spray with Scotch Guard, resists stains & moisture.

My cushion measures 40 x 15. That is the size foam +3 inch height of the foam. My measurements were 37 for the depth and 44 for the length. It is not long enough and is too deep. Any suggestions that I might do to fix this problem as it is quite expensive for the foam and fabric. 20:42

Just now watching this video and have a much easier way to do those last 2 corners. Just orient the seam to be in the middle of a triangle and sew over the wide end of the triangle the correct depth you want the corner to be. Reinforce the seam and trim to the 1/2” seam allowance you are using and voila’ you have a quick corner.

This is the best video I came across! I found another video describing corners only which was great too. I started practicing with an environmentally friendly canvas drop cloth, minus the zipper. It actually looks nice. I used 5 inch foam with half inch Dacron. It's a little on the firm side. This is a 1960-70's cushion redo from my grandparents old wood den set. Thanks again!

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this with the rest of us. I enjoyed the video and learned a lot, including the difference in zippers. I never even considered the different options. You are clearly very skilled and watching your speed, vs my own, reminds me that I’ve got a lot of practice ahead of me. I’m a mid 40s man who is always trying to learn something new. I purchased my “project runway-Brother” machine a few years ago but was soon sidetracked with 3D printing as my winter project. I’m hoping that someday one of my daughters will come to me for help sewing something. By then I hope to be able to show off my superb sewing/ upholstery skills and blow their minds. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and experience.
