How to Make a Basic Cushion | 1 Piece Box Cushion | 30 Minute Cushion

- Опубликовано: 6 июн 2024
- For this chair I wanted to make a really basic cushion for the back rest of the seat. This 1 piece box cushion fit the bill perfectly. The best description of this style is a knife edge cushion (but I really could not find anywhere on the internet that had this exact style that I came up with)
I am naming it the basic cushion, because you only need to cut one piece of fabric to make it. And here's how you can make your own.

"Such a great tutorial - I had been watching a few others that just confused me. I did a trial run and made 1 cover in about 45 minutes start to finish. Gave me the confidence to order the fabric to make a whole set. Thank you
I’m not the only person to be completely amazed how easy that tutorial was to understand and execute. WOW I was so intimidated to start my cushion project but now I’m excited!!
Agreed! I was like....what!?
What a great tutorial! I was watching 30 minute, 40 minute videos on how to do this wrap around miter corners, all day and got such unclear instructions. This girl did a clear, perfectly understandable tutorial in 7 minutes. Thank you so much!!!
You are so welcome!💚😌
Couldn't have said it better myself!!!
2nd this! This was surprisingly more helpful! Thank you so much !
Newly Retired and can enjoy sewing again. I just need to brush up on specialty things. This was perfect. Short, sweet but Very Clear!!! My cushions came out great!! Thanks so much.
Wonderful, clear instructions! Thanks so much.
It's been years since I covered cushions. So glad you posted this to RUclips. It was extremely helpful and the cushions look great!
I'm so glad!
I am brand new to sewing and I followed this tutorial and made my first ever chair cushion out of a tempurpedic mattress topper!!! On my first attempt at 10:30 pm at night
By far, the best tutorial I have seen! Thank you
Excellent! You make the gussets so easy to do - compared to others that complicate matters. THANKS!
I agree, a really good tutorial and I feel very prepared now - thank you
This is exactly what I needed. I need to sew cushions for the back of my couch. Just plan to sew 3 regular cushions with no overhang for the armrest cushions. I’ve been trying to decide how I want to make these. Your tutorial is absolutely perfect! Love the way you added the zipper - genius. Will be looking for some double sided fabric soon. Thank you for the detailed tutorial. Love everything about it. Great job. New subscriber to your channel.
Thanks Pam! We are so happy we could help with your projects!
It's so simplified and well explained. Thank you!
Glad you liked it!!
Such an informative tutorial. Thank you .
I live that wooden thread holder/decoration in the back! That's a really great idea 🙂
Thank you! 😊 It's great for organizing!
Thank you! Thank you! I just made my cushion following this step by step. I can't believe how easy it was
You are so good st tutorials! you explain things so thoroughly yet concisely
Awesome tutorial! Appreciate you posting this!
Brilliant tutorial !!!
I have just made my first cushion cover, I followed everything but actually missed the zipper out and it has worked out really well. My fabric is curtain fabric so didn't want to waste a zipper as the sofa's are reclaimed and would add more cost to my project but it has worked well. I might just go in and reinforce a little by hand or sew closed if I can be bothered. Thank you I have 2 more to do and then I have re-upholsterd a sofa and chair for £70 with Orla Kiely fabric !!
Great work! You totally don't need to add the zipper if you don't want one! I have a hand stitch that will work really well to close up that edge, you can find the tutorial here - ruclips.net/video/WbE5hXt27uU/видео.html
You make it look easy!! Nice finished cushion!!!
Thank you for this beautifully clear well explained vid. I've been asked to cover large foam cushions, no wadding provided, so this will be the best method I believe 🤞
Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for this! i am making 8 cushions and your directions are spot on
This was an awesome tutorial, thank you! I love how easy it was to sew the zipper for thus cover.
Glad it was helpful!
I really liked how you did the tutorial on the cushions, I wanted to learn about making cushion, especially the one piece basics box corner cushions, Thanks much for your instruction
You are so welcome! Glad it was helpful!
This worked like a dream. First time I've made a box cushion and I measured twice and cut once after very careful thought. It has come out just as explained and looks amazing. Thanks.
Ah. Do simple. Thanks. Gold star for teaching. ❤
You make it look so easy 😆Thanks for putting the materials list at the end. Everyone should do that
Yours is the easiest way to make a box cushion. It was straightforward video and easy to understand. Thanks.

Best description I found and brilliant tip with zip to sew seam first
Glad it was helpful!
I only started a couple of weeks ago and your way of sewing zippers is awesome :D
Very clear instructions thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Beautiful!
Amei, tava procurando algo fácil e vc me ajudou muito, gratidão.
Very nice, clear instructions... i double stitch for durability , also i serge the fabric ends to take care of the fraying of the upholstery fabric,
This are really great tips! If you have a serger, I really recommend doing that! And I have never tried double stitching on something like a cushion, does it make the seams bulky? I would love to give this a try!
This is such a great, straight forward tutorial, just what I need! Thank you so much!
You're very welcome :)
Wow this was the best cushion video I've seen so far!!
Yay! Thank you!
This is a great video! Easy to follow, and less than 10 minutes long. This project has been on my to do list, and now my old cushions are so worn out, I have to do this this weekend. Thank You!
Seriously amazing
Video was fast but clear and easy to follow
Thank you, so glad to hear that!

Great job!
This tutorial was very helpful for me thanks a lot
So happy we could help! Best of luck with your project!
This video is very timely because I was just asked to make some. Thank you.
There are so many tutorials out there. We just wanted to keep it simple!
Oh my gosh! I've been stuck at beginner level sewing for I'm not going to admit how many years because a zipper has always been a mystery to me.I could never decipher written instructions. I'm so embarrassed to realize just how un-intimidating they have been all this time. Thank you!!!!
You are good teacher!!!!thank you!!
You are welcome!
Best I have ever seen 😍
Great tutorial Thank you x
You’re welcome 😊
LOVE!
Perfect instructions! Successfully made 12 pillows with zippers.
I love your channel!
Thank you so much!
Genius!!!!!!!! Thank you!
I am so happy we could help!
Best tutorial!!
CAUTION!!
Use the *updated* written instructions when measuring and cutting the gussets, especially for thicker cushions, not the ones presented here.
This video is fantastic just as everyone says, but we had to adjust our cushion to be 1/2" taller since we cut the gussets using the video instructions. This also made the resulting cushions narrower than we'd like so they don't sit perfectly in the chairs. We're still happy with them but wish we hadn't taken the video at face value!
Cut gusset at half the cushion height?
where are the written instuctions?
@@stephanieferrante7730 I would also like to know
Well done!!
Thank you!
Wow well explained and understood sister,⭐⭐⭐
Thanks for watching☺
Thank you for sharing this easy method of sewing box cushion.
You are so welcome!😊
beautiful
Thank you! 😊
Excellent !!! Simple and easy to understand video. Subscribing Now. Keep it up.
Oh thank u soo sooooooooooooooooooo much for sharing this video
Loved the tutorial but confused about the gusset measurements. I understand that you use half the thickness of the foam and add 1/2” for seam EXCEPT for the fold. The. It’s just 1/2 the thickness of the foam, right? Why were your fold gussets 1 and 1:2 inches by 2 inches?
Also the fold has to cover the wide part of the seat cushion - did I miss that somewhere for fabric measurement? Thank you!!!
I am enjoying following your instruction! Questions. Are you sewing 1/2 inch seam allowance all the way around. I am a quilter and 1/4 is the standard. Also, when using your cushion measurements are you using the original foam cushion measurements or the new measurements after adhering the batting? Also your batting looks like it has some type of outside coating instead of the batting I am use to using for quilting? Thanks for your help!
Great tute Thank you
He makes it look easy, the boy is that some skill. It sure helps if all of your cats are symmetrical.
Great video. Beautiful fabric! So helpful. I am going to assume this would work the same for something 5 or 6 inches deep as well? If anyone happens to read this and thinks it won't work, let me know! Thank you!!!
Yes it will! Best of luck with your project!!
Also, if you're interested, you can find this material here - www.onlinefabricstore.net/swavelle-mill-creek-mumsford-carnival-fabric-.htm
@@onlinefabricstore thanks, I may just do that!
Great video ty
Glad you enjoyed it!
This was excellent. Thank you! Would love one without a zipper, like a envelope?!?
Many thanks for this tuto! Still have some questions : if my foam is 10 cm height so my top gussets will be 6,2 cm and the folded side gussets will be 5cm, is that correct? Do you think it’s possible to add piping all around the piece?
Thanks from France (that’s why using cm) for your help and this video !
Love this tutorial! When you sew the gussets do you also use a 1/2" seam allowance?
I did and it worked ok
Hi there. Your video is the best I've seen on this subject. I have a problem in the fact that the width of my foam is 12.25 and the length is 35.75, thickness 5". Because of the length it would be best if I had the zipper along the back (L) of the cushion. The way you cut out the gussets wouldn't work for me. I think with your instructions I would cut out a piece 82.5" L x 18.25" W. But the gussets would have to be cut out differently. Could you help me understand how I would go about that?
Your L & W measurements can totally be swapped! Just switch those numbers in the formulas.
Thanks for the great tutorial! I have a couple of questions. Do you use temporary basting adhesive for the batting, and is it reasonable to use a cotton blend batting instead of the Dacron? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!
Yes, you can definitely use cotton batting instead! We used a more permanent spray adhesive, but a temporary would work for this as well.
Great ❤️
Hi thanks for your awesome video! Can you show me a video where the top of the pillow is with a curve instead of straight? Thank you
Thanks for sharing this cushion video. I am going to try to make one using this method I have similar videos, and they do NOT add 1/2" to the gussets, can you share why you add the extra 1/2" please?
One thing missing are ties - Do you have a tutorial for these if you are putting them in chairs? Agree, this video was very well put together. Are all of your seam allowances 1/2 inches?
Wow ❤️❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is an amazing video. I am having a problem getting the gussets to match up and the the cornered stick up a little. Any thoughts?
What a great tutorial! I would like to ask if the sewing machine needs to be an industrial one, or it should be good with any home machine?
We used a regular at home machine!
What type of fabric is that? Beautiful ❤️
Excellent video!
This may sound kind of like a of weird request, but, flight sim pilots need seat cushions that have a "square notch" cut-out at the front of the cushion that is 110 mm x 110mm. This allows us to have the flight joystick being placed in between our legs. Real planes have the joystick center mounted between their legs. How would we go about cutting and sewing this square notch? If you Google an F/A-18C cockpit you will see what I mean about the notch for the joystick. Thank you!
Muy bien explicado
Thank you so much ❤
Love this tutorial! Just one question (maybe it's obvious), the number you get from the calculation for the size of the gussets... is that for the width of the gusset, height of the gusset, or both?
The width and height are going to be the same for the 4 gussets that are on the outside corners. The gussets along the fold are going to be a little different. The side that is along the folded edge, should be shorter by 1/2" because you don't have to account for the seam allowance
@@onlinefabricstore thank you!
Hii. Does ripping the first seam of the zipper will make the fabric be unravel/fray?? This is the only part it's not clear to me from this awesome tutorial. Thanks you!!!
No! Sorry for the confusion here. You are not actually ripping the fabric, you are just ripping the seam that you sewed.
Overall a good tutorial - but the zipper install is a challenge with the zipper pull. You could separate the zipper sew each side, then reinstall the zipper pull. However, I am unclear on the seam allowances. is is a 1"seam allowance on all sides OR is it a half inch on all sides? I noticed in the video you did what looks like a 5/8" seam allowance on the gussets. I agree with other viewers as to why the gusset formula is different on the fold. I made my cushion per the formula but did not wrap with dacron and the cushion fit was off in the depth (or width) it is an easy project once the measurements and SA's are accounted for.
Great tutorial! My only question is when you first fold the fabric together to get the seam for the zipper, are you sewing a 1/2 seam allowance or a 1 inch seam allowance? Thank you. 😊
I used a half inch seam allowance there!
Alyssa....I am making my zippered cushion finished......44L" x 25"w plus 4" deep.....Please let me know what the measurements would be to cut. I am coming up with all different tuturials measurements. Maureen Galleo
Hi! What is your seam allowance on the corners? Mine are too big and wing out. Also, I have too much fabric in the length and not enough in the width. And I followed all of your math instructions.
They botched the measurements and won't remove/update the video.
I am so happy to see this video, but I don't know what I am looking at at the 3:55 mark. Are you cutting the end off of the zipper? And at 4:00, what are you doing there? I can't wrap my head around it. I really want to try this, but those few seconds from 3:55 to around 4:07 really have me confused. Thanks.
Yes, you cut the zipper to be flush with the edge of the fabric. Then you want to line up both the sides and zip up the zipper (which will make your fabric form a loop) but you don't want to go all the way so you can easily open it when you are done sewing the sides.
Hi, great video. Could i use Velcro instead of a zipper ?
Absolutely! I actually did this with another cushion that I made, so if you want to check out that video, here it is - ruclips.net/video/ugfcBpo8HDw/видео.html (skip to step 4 for the velcro section)
For 3 inch foam, for the center gussets on the fold, do you measure the 1&1/2" along the fold or along the cut edge?
Measure along the cut edge
I covered a chair with the same fabric!!! 😊😊😊 But I used the other side.
I LOVE the other side of the fabric. They are both so beautiful.
Great quality presentation, but I had a little trouble figuring out how to do the math for a rectangular shape. And I'm a new sewist, so that zipper step was really hard for me. Would like a little more explanation on that.
Thank you for this excellent tutorial. The only thing I don’t understand is why the foam height is doubled on the length but not on the width.
Since it is one piece that wraps from the bottom, up the front, over the top, and around to the back, the height of the foam needs to be counted twice for the length of the piece. The width of the piece just wraps from half way up the sides and across. Sorry, it's a bit hard to explain, but I think you'll understand once you're actually doing it!
I'm also having a hard time understanding this. I have everything laid out but don't want to cut the fabric short. It isn't obvious for some reason 😂
If the piece gets wrapped around one direction, then on the other direction there still needs to be height added 2x. You said the width wraps from half way up the sides across? What does that mean?
