I hated the social dilemma so much. The dudes being g interviewed obviously had so much to say, much more about ethics and politics than the film wanted to say. It was too scared to take any sort of stance other than "phone bad" which isn't something that any of them were trying to say

I think that this documentary was an amazing emotional Rollercoaster. But on the rational site of things it falls short when actually thinking about a lot of the arguments/suggestions. This might not be as informative as it could have been, but the hype that it generated due to amazing editing/scripting etc. might actually have an impact on many people and therefore shift the public attention a little bit more to these critical problems. Without it i wouldn't have found this treasure trove of a channel haha

“Hot boredom is like being locked in a padded cell. You are bored, miserable, and irritated. You will probably experience lots of that in your meditation practice. Beyond that, however, with cool boredom, you don’t feel imprisoned. Cool boredom is quite spacious, and it creates further softness and sympathy toward ourselves. In that space, we are no longer afraid of allowing ourselves to experience a gap. In other words, we realize that existence does not depend on constantly cranking up our egomaniacal machine. There is another way of existing.” - Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche

Currently with RUclips I've reached a stage where I feel I'm addicted to the educational channels like yours, sci show, physics girl, veritasium etc., etc., I spend hours watching useful content at the wrong time when I should be completing my tasks... I can't resist the temptations that's the reason why I'm here at 3.00am - absolute midnight... I hv no idea how to get over it.... It would be great if you make another video on practical ways to come out of/stay away from digital addiction...

@@lindasimons691 hey sorry to know that... I can share a couple of things.. Firstly, you can create separate playlists for productive & entertainment videos.. then you can consciously observe & realise the return of value you're obtaining for the time spent.. it's ok to have low days when you bingewatch but after few days you'll start realising that even the productive videos are not so useful at the end if you don't remember & implement what you've learnt..
Secondly, start taking any actions & keep yourself busy that way.. you can notice reduced screentime coz you are spending it on actually doing something.....
Maybe these are the things that can give practical results... Relying on brute force & willpower is not gonna work in the long run especially in this era of short form content... Don't fall into the trap of covering every new content out there coz that's impossible...

I truly appreciate this video and what you're saying.
I think once each of us becomes more aware of how were constantly being guided and manipulated by these platforms it becomes much easier to begin noticing our own behaviour, and only then can we start changing that behaviour to not be so easily susceptible to the whims of algorithms. And for that I'm thankful for this video!
Personally I've never used social media on my phone, for better or worse, and have found that a good choice, because not only will not I get the impulse to post things willy-nilly, but have to delay the gratification by writing things down and maybe later realizing it might have not been so important after all, I also am able to focus more on what is happening right now, on the people I'm with, and in general just be more mindful. Perhaps I am missing something important by not being connected all the time, but I don't imagine it'd be of more value than not being guided by al of the gorithm family, and robbed of my time.
Next time you're having lunch or what not, have a look around and pay attention to where everyone else's attention is focused. :)
Again thank you Braincraft! Take care and stay safe

Like you, I also think the benefits far outweigh the hazards of RUclips and Facebook, if one uses them with reason. I once took part in an experiment on Facebook in which a new app claimed it could tell me who I am using only my Facebook feed. It found me to be an androgynous, 28-year-old artist. In reality, I was a 70-year-old translator with a full beard. What's more, I can safely assert that I have never bought anything owing to ads on social media unless it was something I was specifically looking for. So I'm not worried about any of the insidious perfidies decried in the Social Dilemma.

There are steps you can take to use certain kinds of social media yet avoid having social media manipulate your emotions. By far the most powerful method is to screen out all ads.
For example, I am an avid user of RUclips. The possibilities for educating oneself are almost limitless on RUclips. I am interested in mathematics, physics, early 20th century movies, jazz, and politics. I pay something like $10 per month for RUclips premium. That means I never have to watch an ad whose placement is controlled by RUclips. The only way I ever see an ad on RUclips is if the channel has made the ad part of the video they created. This very seldom happens.
The same general idea works when I am reading other kinds of web pages, because I use an ad blocker, the kind that is featured by my browser as an extension. I occasionally pay the ad blocker company $20 or so.
I use Facebook only to answer messages from family or friends. I never post my own material there, nor play games there, nor any other FB activity. So if I have to use FB, I am on and off in a matter of two or three minutes.

I also find that a lot of the criticism of the Internet are ripped entirely out of context of the broader world. IVe not watched 'The Social Dilemma' so I cant say if it is an example of this, but take the 'Social Media can make people sad' thing.
    -
Well I can go to BBC News for England right now and what do I see? Man arrested over a murder. Man jailed for killing his ex. Prisoner jailed for cellmate murder. This, all of this, is snuff. Its not informing me of anything. Its not asking me to be on the look out for a criminal, or telling me what murder statistics are, (Theyve actually been down recently.) or what dangers to avoid, it doesnt tell me about a policy or political situation I can contact my MP about, its totally and utterly useless. Its not news. Its horror stories to draw in clicks and perversely entertain our base morbid curiousity.
    Its snuff.
    -
and its _incredibly_ pervasive in mainstream media, and appears to have serious deleterious effects, as the populace seems to have a horrendously twisted idea of how bad various problems are in our society.
    -
So all that said, Ive no doubt social media can make people sad when people go 'doom scrolling', but... how much better or worse is it in full context? How much better or worse are people who only use social media vs those who grew up glued to the news every night? I honestly dont know the answers to those questions, I just get frustrated that so many takes on the Internet dont seem to ask them at all.

I'm one of those who create such algorithms, I accept that this is true it depends on us to keep in the mind the main motto of creating the algorithm but we never know what can be the outcome of our algorithm in the real life, we really don't know if we create a robot today what it may do in the future based on the data that it looks around the environment.
Algorithm is continuously learning from the user data that's why we also don't know what will happen in future
But if we see the future outcome then it should be our responsibility to correct that mistake

Do we have a moral obligation to minimize our negative posts, so that we reduce the negative impact of our content on the people who come across it?

My computer is playing tricks on me? But I made it. I clean it pretty much bi-monthly. I installed a Noctua cooler to keep the thermals right... I can't. oh :(

Great content. However, please adjust the Audio Levels among the clips. Everytime you switched to another interviewee, I could not hear them, and when the video returned to you, I was blasted with way too loud audio. There must be some way to Smooth the level of the audio of your posts. Just a suggestion.

To avoid this, I recommanded walking naked in your living room.
Seriously, the answer seem to be out of those tool. It's not about deleting app or hidding your phone. It's about the something else you wanna do or where you wanna be. If you want to go swim go for it, be in nature.... and when you do those things don't just jump back to the phone. Take time being grateful for it.
    My two cents

I want to write here that I am commenting in order to make the algorithm favor this utterly fantastic video. But we all know that I've just been conditioned to comment in anticipation of reinforcement should someone updoot my comment, and I might need help. Oops. 😅
I'll definitely be checking out the new nebula series, that sounds great! Also I can't comment there and feed an addiction!

There's a reasoning mistake in the first part of this. Positive posts increased positive posts, negative posts increased negative posts but BE CAREFUL - post valence is not the same as emotion. Posting is performance. Emotion and post valence may be related but unless I hear someone state that, I will not assume it. People may post one way or another because they unconsciously want to fit in. It likely DOES change emotion but the evidence isn't provided hear that posting valence always matches emotional valence. I think a lot of people who post positively still feel like doo doo.

I liked it. I thought framing yourself with a light on one side and a table with books on the other was good, connoting knowledge. Liked the way you used music to build tension during the part on experimenting with others.
Why not use a tablet instead of a smartphone? You get fewer interruptions and tablets are more conducive to long form consumption of information, like reading. It's possible to get some real work done on a tablet. Err...am I trying to hard to influence?
Enjoyed the subtle Sean Connery reference.
P.S. I just put up some dishes and thought of the old Olivia Newton-John song, 'Please Mr. Please.' Can a button pushing cowboy and a jukebox put us in a bad mood? Then I thought of a Jane Austen novel in which one of the heriones is reading one too many gothic novels and how it gives her mistaken suspicions about what's going on. Don't worry, everything turns out okay in the end. So has the human condition changed all that much? Language is both wonderful and perilous.

I read Vance Packard's book _The Hidden Persuaders_ in the 1960's it made me very afraid of commercial Television. Since then it's gotten worse and I now go to extremes to avoid advertising. I rarely use my phone to access the Internet because the tools aren't available. I've also had to restrict "entertainment" web browsing to an hour or so in the morning. I disagree about how important these things are. Yeah, they're useful and sometimes fun, necessary - no.
