@@TrenchMan93 Chuck Norris doesn't need to go to Italian restaurants. He buys tomatoes, flour and eggs and glares at them until they become spaghetti marinara out of fear.

This scene is deep. Two former elite fighters that are now broken men. Rocky lost his wife, best friend, battled cancer and brain damage, and Drago lost his wife, is living in exile from Russia in the impoverished slums of Ukraine with the only thing likely keeping him going is desire to make his son a champion. A lot of character depth in this movie. A lot of emotions.

in one minute here, Dolph Lundgren has more dialogue than in the entire movie 35 years ago…..
Yes, Stallone did an extraordinary job taking a comic book type villain and turning him into a bitter, calloused, and jaded old man, who thankfully redeems himself in the end, before it's too late. He realized he didn't want his son to be miserable for the next 33 years he lost a match, nor believe that his worthiness of being loved hinged on the result of a match.
Lec Zorn Stallone didn’t direct this
Truth beats I must break you
you got that right buddy boy
What.?.. I must break you..
“No pictures of that..” powerful line, even after 30+ years, that fight still haunts Rocky
I always kind of felt Drago fight haunted him the most. He gave up the title to go box him in Russia. He won but it didn’t bring Apollo back and it gave him brain damage and PTSD. Rocky was never the same mentally or physically after his fight with Drago. Nobody really won that except for the audience
@@mysteryjunkie9808

The sad thing is this line flies over most people's heads, and they interpret/atone it to Rocky's bad english/vernacular. When in fact...he meant exactly what he said - No pictures of "That".

Christopher Hughes yes, like Rocky having a flashback when Drago raises his fists to him saying, “Remember these? To my boy, it’s all he knows.”
Man it amazed me how Creed 2 took one dimensional villain added more depth to the character and actually sympathetic towards him and his son
Sly is SO underrated when it comes to writing screenplays. How Sly does not have an Academy Award is crazy
@@custosnocte1528 I'm watching Rocky IV as I write this. I saw it back in '85 when it first came out. I knew it was going to suck becaue of all the glossy advertisements at the snack bar. Yeah, compared to the first 3, it sucked. (Number 5 was worse) but dammit if old Stallone didn't lay the ground work for 30 years later. He was wanting to retire Rocky after like #3 or 4 and only made 5 to send him off in style or whatever. But having Russians turn and cheer for Rocky? Yeah, right. But, parts of Drago's reaction make sense now after watching Creed 2. He wasn't just a cyborg. He was human and basically told Rocky, "dude, your nuts. I'd never let someone I love die like that. " Did Stallone get lucky or did he have vision?
To be honest Drago had potential former soldier and boxer who was the image of soviet superiority lose everything off 1 boxing match and lost even more after the USSR felt apart thats enough meat for a solid writer which was the case here
Yeah, but there was nothing wrong with Drago as is. To call him one-dimensional as if it carries a stigma, demerits his role as this all-encompassing antagonist in Rocky 4; the embodiment of the Soviet Union-well, to a degree until he renounces his role as a public servant by addressing his motivations in the fight against Rocky. Not everything has to be sympathetic or relatable-but, it's all subject to your preferences in the end.
@Tsephe Letseka Nope. Stallone was nominator for Best Actor and Best Screenplay, but did not win either. The movie did win Best Director and Best Picture.
Dolph Lundgren proved in this scene that he is more than guns and muscles

@@steveatrandom6725 Agreed. I liked how they made his character deeper in this movie. Destroyed physically and mentally, and hopes to return to some sort of glory with his son

@@steveatrandom6725 yes I think that was the greatest part of their story. They wanted only respect as men
I love Rocky's reaction when he sees Drago. "Is that you?" This was a terrifying opponent that he only ever knew as an opponent and nothing else, like a monster from his past he never expected to see again. Even when he's conversing with Drago, you can tell it all feels so eerie and unnatural to Rocky, like he's speaking to a ghost.
I also love the fact that Drago is facing away from the door so you only see his back. Builds up the tension as Rocky approaches him.
I love the fact that he didn't have to say his name. Even after 30+ years, their mere presence was all it took
Can’t imagine what Rocky was thinking when he realized who it was...

Losing a fair fight at home is Drago’s trauma...he got off way too easy...rather than face Rocky, the US could have sunk to the same low as Russia by dragging the biggest fucker they could find off the street, jack him up on all kinds of gear and send him over there to put Ivan in the morgue...remember he’s meant to be a synthetic fighter...brute strength and explosive power alone got him that victory against Apollo. This is a very well done scene. Lundgren does present a very human face to Drago not seen in Rocky IV. It's so shitty what happened to his character - his wife dumped him and his government/country exiled him, which is absolutely shameful considering what Drago was capable of. At the time, he would've been able to migrate to the U.S or Western Europe, and make a better life for himself.
Rocky basically told Ivan, "You're gonna catch these hands again if you don't leave..."

Imagine the emotion in these men seeing each other after all these years.
Rocky sees the man who killed his best friend, gave him brain damage and pretty much PTSD after the beating he took, thus robbing him of his last years as a boxer and leaving him unable to get money for his family when they needed it. Now, he's sitting in the restaurant named after his wife. That "Hey you?" Was probably more "how dare you come here".
And to Drago, this was the man who he couldn't beat and that single loss shattered the illusion of him being unbeatable. That lead to his name being disgraced, exiled to Ukraine, losing his wife and respect. A mere nobody. And he had to train his son to fight right at the bottom of the ladder to regain some respect for the Drago name. And that, is likely why he seems almost insulted that Rocky actually chooses to forget that fight that cost him so much.

He was battling cancer when he acted this scene.
Really like how they add some depth to the Drago character. In IV he was just a soulless machine. But here they really show him as a human being. Obviously most of the credit goes to Dolph’s performance.
Dolph is actually a crazy intelligent guy but he always gets cast as the macho tough guy action hero because he's also built like a brick shithouse. Both Dolph and Stallone are old enough now that Rocky and Drago wouldn't be believable as fighters now so Dolph had to use a lot more dialog to portray his character than he did in Rocky IV. It shows you just how good an actor he is when you consider that he was able to get his point across in this scene.
1985: "I have defeated a great champion. If he dies, he dies."
2018: "Is a good picture..." *pans to Apollo*
Even though he killed Apollo during the fight, both of these instances show Ivan respected Apollo. Plays on the fact that Ivan tried to end his fight with Rocky very quick in the fourth film, opposed to Apollo, showing he recognized the American "won't quit" attitude and feared loss in the ring.
It was a nice touch for this scene.
I don't think so, I think the line after defeating Apollo was just pure self-aggrandisement.

thats not what he said IIRC. he said "i defeat old man. soon i face the real champion"
@@godemperorofmankind3.091 Soon, i defeat the real champion...

Id have to disagree.
1. When he said great champion, it's more like he was mocking Apollo. He was sarcastic when he said great

And just like that, a one-dimensional cinematic antagonist gets two extra dimensions.
“My son will break your boy” I love that line
Drago clearly felt sad he had no pictures of him but also sounded like he's not surprised after killing Apollo in the ring all those years ago
Rocky was never the same after that fight. He got brain damage, became broke and his career came to an end, it didn’t make Apollo come back either. And drago was shut out by his people and his wife left him.. no good really came of that fight at all.
"Even if you win what have you won?apollos still gone"
But Rocky was able to build back his life and has his own restaurant. He battled cancer, and many people consider him a hero and has got immense respect. People still remember him in a good way. Drago had the worst of it and never recovered.
Ivan is so polite, he complimented Rocky's pictures
"Because of you, I lose everything" no Drago, the night you killed Apollo, Rocky lost everything. At least you're alive and not six feet under like Apollo
At least, Apollo doesn't feel pain no more. He received all the pain he could got at his last fight, and there's no more pain. Drago is still in pain, 33 years more than Apollo could've had. I think Drago deserves it
True. But it’s all in the perspective of his character. It was a great performance by Dolph.
yeah, rocky lost his house his money, his wife, and by this point, his best friend paulie
@@Johnadams20760 True, but Rocky got some of it back when he mostly likely sold Mick's gym (which he inherited) and started Adrian's restaurant.
@@rooneyjosuehernandezvillan4213 atleast Drago's son grew up with his father, Adonis grew up without a father
It wasn’t until this scene, I really realised what that fight in Moscow did to Rocky. It wasn’t even for the title! Pure revenge, and darkness in Rocky’s mind and heart that night. Powerful scene. The most powerful of all the Rocky movies.
"That was like...a million years ago"
Damn Rocky. You gotta make Gen Xers feel that old!
If I were Rocky I would have said to him. What about the things people lost because of you? A man lost his life, a woman lost her husband, kids lost their father, and I lost a friend.
the way he becomes sad.. country, respect.. and only whispers 'wife' truly shows sadness..great acting.
3:12 Damnn that's cold😂
Wow ya! I only noticed that now!!
Rocky had family and respect but Drago lost respect from his own people
-"Everything changed for me that night."
-"Uh... was that because you lost the fight, or because you picked up that guy by the neck, threw him to the floor, and then turned to your Soviet leaders and yelled for them to go to hell, in front of 10's of thousands of Soviet spectators and on live global TV?"
Yeah, I know. It doesn't sound much like Rocky dialog. But it seems like it would be at least worth pointing out. Even if he had gone on to win the fight, I doubt Drago would've been treated as their golden boy after that.
For real. Drago told Soviet Leaders and KGB leaders to basically go fuk themselves 😂😂 he should be thankful they just exiled him instead of murder him right after the match
@@nick56677 Seriously. As a matter of fact, it makes zero sense that he got away with that. Millions of Russians watched it happen, his execution probably would have been public just to set an example for the Russian civilians.
@@rob3791 😂😂😂
I seriously doubt it. Back during the Cold War, publicity was absolutely everything, because that was the medium for the two countries to directly combat each other without outright violence. Drago winning would have negated any bad thing he might have done, including disrespect his leader.
That combined with the unforgivable sin of losing to the American fighter on Soviet soil sealed his fate.
dolph motherfuckin lundgren, pure legend, and now he is a far better actor than before, his face is full of emotions. anger, bitterness, hate, and a little bit of sadness too...
Dolph is pretty intimidating
Yep, even to this day
Notice that Rocky doesn't sit at the same table as Ivan, he instead grabs a chair from the next table over so he can keep his distance.
Ivan: Because of you I lose everything. Country, Respect, Wife"
Rocky: "If She Leaves, She Leaves"
Feel bad for Drago. All he had left was to live through his son
It’s not Rocky fault, that he beat his ass. If Ivan have never beaten Apollo to death, there’s no reason for Rocky to fight him. And Ivan wouldn’t have lost everything.
I love how, even tho Ivan killed Rocky's friend Apollo, Rocky still feels empathy for Drago when he talks about how he lost everything. On the other hand, I'm glad I have an answer about how Ivan's life went after that fight against Rocky.
A lot of power in this scene. In all the Rocky movies, this is probably some of the best acting and dialogue I've seen and heard. The distance Rocky puts between himself and Drago with the 'there are no pictures of THAT'. Not us - that. The way he sits at a different table. His line about putting strays down reminds you that he's still a street smart working class guy from Philly. The parting salvo when Drago points out the photo of Apollo. The Creed movies are ok but this - this is just gold...
The look on rockys face when he sees how big victor is says it all
Man the fact that Lundren can still can channel that character is amazing. Plus you actually feel sorry for a murder, this movie was so ducking good
Compared to Rocky 4, Dolph Lundgren actually fleshes his character out further right here.
“It's a good picture”
Very strong line!
You can't tell if he wants to hurt him or show him respect after what happened many years ago.
I really admired the irony at the end of the Second fight....Rocky couldn't throw in the towel for Apollo for circumstances that he wouldn't/couldn't do in Rocky 4. Yet Drago threw in the towel for his Son because he couldn't stand to see him take the abuse of the fight and the after math....it all ties in and makes sense
2:55 - Drago’s son enters.
3:03 - Drago (to Rocky): “Not everybody can change.”
(Drago and his son leave)
"I lose everything because of you"
It's a shame Ivan confuses his anger for his family with rocky. It ain't Rocky's fault his his wife and family abandoned him
It is because of Drago won the fight, he never would have lost those things.
@@knightrcer did anyone tell Drago to murder Apollo Creed?
@@mikedemirdjian9976 Yes, it was in Russian that didn't get any subtitle translation during the fight.
@@knightrcer oh ok. Sure.
@@knightrcer Oh, so sorry, was Rocky supposed to lay down and take the “L” because otherwise the man who killed his friend would have lost his family? 😆 It was a fair fight, and Rocky was the better man that night. If Drago couldn’t bounce back, that’s his own damn fault.
3 minutes of silence of them staring at each other would have been intesting..I can imagine the internal dialogue
Best scene from Creed II....when I saw this in the theatre with my two sons, nostalgia flooded in, I remember watching Rocky IV when I was just 14.....that both actors hit it off so good again...very powerful scene here.
I think they could have done a lot more with this scene.
Lundgren said there was a version with some other stuff, he had .... And yet another version, of Sly's that was like twice as short as this (Which would have been completely ineffective)
I disagree. This scene is pretty much the kickstart for the rest of the film, it's short and to the point. The reunion one has wanted for decades and the other never thought he'd have to face.
Rocky's dialogue could have been better. Why no mention of Apollo's death and never being able to know his son?
I also am of the feeling that they could have gone deeper with this. They were on the right track and it ended sort of abruptly. I think they may have missed an opportunity here. Hoping they release a director’s cut in the future.
Not really there’s not much to be said, I think that’s the point. Drago showed up to let Rocky know about his son and what they were there for. There was no need to talk about anything else but that and Drago’s life since he lost to Rocky. What more were you looking for?
Lundgren is such an underrated actor and this scene shows it!
after all theses years Dolph still is a great actor
Well they do have 1 thing in common Drago lost his wife in the movies and in real life Sylvester Stallone also lost Brigette Neilson so technically there even lol 😆
That's true!
Drago's wife is played by Brigette Neilson wasn't it?
@@ammaraiman7908 yea
At least he had jennifer and kids
More like "he escaped from"
I like how Rocky sits at the next table rather than at Drago's table. Instinctively leaving space between them so he has time to react if anything goes down.
But Drago still gave Rocky that look of respectful acknowledgement as he turned to leave
Drago" I lose everything because of you."
Rocky:" After what you did, you're lucky that's all I took"
Rocky lose everything too in Rocky V his millions his house everything.
