There is a narration error right at the beginning of the video, mixing up the year 960 with 1960. We sincerely apologize and we hope you will enjoy the video. If you do, please remember to like and subscribe.

It's my bad! Should have caught it. Apologies everyone!
I was wondering how I'd somehow missed the Scandinavian War of 1960 that rearranged Eastern Sweden...
@@LAHFaust It was the 60's man... there's no written record of it, all of the historians were high. Right on!
As always the original battle visualisation differs from other channels.
@@HistoryTimes The maps look wrong too.
I am no expert so I am cautious about nitpicking most times but...
Norway is shown in dark redin an early map and it just looks wrong to me. It included moors that only the laps would live in (if anyone) and it didn't stretch as far up the coast as places like Trondheim (which definitely was part of Norway) .
I just looked at it again.
It looks like it is done on purpose. Maybe some areas were refusing to be vassals of the Norwegian Kings.
Legend has it King Olaf is wandering the ocean floor in full armour to this day in search of his beloved Norway, but frustrated by the absence of any stars to guide him.
I think he would have found it by now
Great video. Hmm maybe we should do more naval battles.. we can use the same battlemap every time!
Hey partner! That water looks good eh? I'm still not 100% happy with it. For one, I'll have to scale the 'bubble' effect depending how tight the camera is.
Its been a year but can yall have a collaboration cause that would be EPIC
The waters keep flowing, the tides keep rolling, and battle never ends. You might find yourself hard pressed to find the same spot of water again...
@@g.o.paciong3015 Hopefully they will EHTV still didn't make the Battle of Trafalgar.
Tryggvason was such an awesome dude. Can't believe he chose to face the Danes, Swedes *and* Wends all on his own and almost won.
Outnumbered more than 7-1 and he still fought to the end. Mad respect.
2,5 -1 actuallly. Still - that's too mutch too.
Indeed, he should have been canonized.
@@NorwegianSedevacantist lmao dude raided people
@@youtaku6966 Ok? So did Charlemagne and he is praised as a great Catholic ruler by practically everyone.
@@NorwegianSedevacantist yeah that isn't cool
I love how casually Olaf cruises along the coast pillaging and raiding
Hehe. Olaf: "You lads bored?". The crew: "Kinda". Olaf: "Ok, hmmm. Let's seee. Right! Let's dock in that town over there to kill and rob some folks".
@@HistoryMarche I thought it had more too do with taking women and children too be slaves.
Those were the good old days!
Dang. I thought our protagonist was going to pull off an upset.
Hehe, I tried hard to present the story without spoilers. Very glad it had that effect on you :)
@@HistoryMarche ..haha i also felt the same way. But i guess the real truths are always very bitter. Most men in this world die a sad death....
@@dramit1815 Hehe yeah. History isn't like a disney film I'm afraid. An example of norse history that always put its mark on me was how Olav Haraldsson (the holy) when gathering norway under the cross, had his opposition killed in hedmark by burning their house as they slept and cutting them down as they tried to escape the flames. (a common tactic). And then enslaving and gouging out the eyes of his most vocal and powerful opponent King Rørek Dagson. Rørek lived a miserable life as the kings thrall. Forced to be close to him at all times (keep our enemies closer).. He once in his misery and hatred attempted to take the life of the king during mass in church.. since the king would not be wearing armor to church, but despite the lack of armor, Olaf's thick clothes and cloak kept him from coming to serious harm as Rørek's blindness prevented him from an accurate strike. As Olaf barely dodged Rørek's second blow with the dagger, Rørek shouted "You run from me King Olav, a blind man?" (he used his nickname Olav Digre (olav the large). This was Rørek's last chance and was taken from the church by Olav's men and exiled to greenland. However he died on iceland before the final crossing to greenland.
Quite a miserable fate. He was far from the protagonist of Olav's story, but I could genuinely empathize with Rørek. A petty king whose lands and people were taken from him. His family and everything. Blinded. Forced to live near the man who took everything from him. And even his last act of revenge turned out to be impotent. And yet there's a measure of respect and balls to a man like that.
So many great stories from that time. Snorri's works , 100% true or not are a great gift to all of us. Not just northerners who want to learn about their history.
Lol, is that the women who cough at the Uber driver?
Somehow I started to root for the guy, you so carefully introduced and got mad, when he didn't turn the tide of the battle against all odds. Let that sink in: I get mad, because 1000 years ago a guy I didn't know 10 minutes before lost a battle :D
Glad to see the video had a dramatic effect on you. Thank you very much for watching.
He definitely did sink
@@Martin1jg Jay See rofl
Yes historic
You’re not the only one!
Loving the sea battle - it must have taken forever to animate the individual units . Nicely done.
Thanks man! Actually, animating the naval battle took significantly less time than I thought. Whole video was finished in 9 days.
the animation was so cute! loved it
@@marygebbie6611 Thank you kindly m'am.
I would also suggest every one check out flash point history as well. He's great.
Now THAT was an exit.
Plot twist: once under water he removed his armor and swam aboard one of the danish ships, hiding, only to get back to his rival's sister and live happily ever after.
"What is that has broken with such a terrible noise" King Olaf shouted at Einar.
"Norway, from thy hands, my king" Einar Tambarskelfr answered, throwing his bow, broken in two.
" no! Not as terrible as that, take, use mine! "The king commanded with a hint of desperation in his voice, giving his bow to Einar.
Tambarskelfr took it and said "it's to weak a bow for a strong king"
Then, Einar Tambarskelfr took sword and shield, and fought bravely till the end.
I love this battle when I read about it years ago! I even composed a song about it! :D
Another myth.
As they approached the danes, Olav looked a little worried. The men asked him; «Are you afraid of the danes?». «No», he replied, «..but there are many norwegian men amongst them».
einar said for veik for veik er kongens bue only after the kings bow broke too
Rather unfortunate end to Olaf. It's good to be brave but sometimes you need to be tactical especially when you are betrayed. Guess it's the good old viking way of all out frontal attack. Very brave of him. Good video and love your channel. Cheers!
Better to die a righteous death.
@@kahlilg9824 Why not fight another day and kill the unrighteous when you have the advantage or the fight is fair in numbers and righteous lol
@@moviejose3249 Because running away would seriously damage your reputation, fame and honour and thus the social power you need to keep your alliances with your jarls and petty kings together and you household warriors loyal.... Nobody in Norse society would align themselves with a coward
Also, growing up in that culture - unless you want to live the rest of your life with no selfrespect - running is really not an option.
@Artur Spatuzzi Interesting then that he remained a hero and legend to his people, most Kings *were* tyrants so that's not saying much.
Last but not least, Sveyn Forkbeards father Harold Bluetooth was the first Scandinavian King to be baptized, Forkbeard was himself a Catholic.
Pays to know of what you speak.
So... Swedes and Danes fought together for once! Rare. x'D
My thought too whilst making the video.
no we Danes have very strict immigration policy
@Blood Eagle 88 Hell no, the danes and swedes are among the nations with the most wars and longest wars... Denmark and Norway allways been in a love and hate releation ship
@@cardy4ever Stronger by the day. Sweden just announced our economy is going into recession. We have 300,000 retirees on the poverty line and the number of people shot to death by firearms has risen from 20 people in 2013 to over 50 in 2018 counting those shot but who didnt die we are in the hundreds. Only now does our government want to fix the on going gang violence because a woman was shot to death while holding her baby. I'd say were pretty fucking far from OK.
@@glenglen6386 50 shot dead in a year? Damn thats a regular friday in the USA.
My territory! Love it mate. Great work.
Thanks a lot! Maybe we can work out a collab on one of these in the future. I'm sure that you're much more knowledgeable than myself when it comes to Vikings.
Hopefully, at some point this year, I will do a bit of a trip of the UK and we could always film something as well!
This was great, and a lot like your excellent videos.
@@HistoryMarche Let's talk :)
Sounds good!@@alexanderdoddy7590
Even a thousand years ago life is more amazing than fiction. I'm in awe of this man Olaf Tryggvason. I had never heard of him or I don't remember. Thanks for putting his story together like you did. I won't forget him now.
Thank you very much for watching.
olaf has his own statue in norway with a severd head between his legs
Wow I didn't know that. Pretty brutal :) Thank you for the info.
@@HistoryMarche The head is supposed to be that of Tormod Kark (Þormóðr Karkr) who was the thrall of and betrayed Håkon Sigurdsson (Hákon earl (sigurdsson)). Kark killed his master and presented his head to Olaf as proof of his deed, thinking it would ingratiate him. However, Olaf had Kark himself beheaded for his treachery against his master.
You can't handle the truth no, It’s probably more correct to say that it is laying before him, not between his legs
Exactly, it's at his feet. Bonus facts: The statue is at the city square in Trondheim (Nidaros), as he is counted as the founder of our city, and doubles as a sun dial - also, there was a poem (later turned into a song) written about this battle, made even cooler by the band Glittertind: ruclips.net/video/7TtYteK7Pl8/видео.html
Well done dude, superb as ever!!!!
There's a massive tomb on a hill island in Bohuslän. Really amazingly done i can't imagine how they carried those boulders up there.
And the Tomb belongs to King Tryggve which was Olav tryggvasons father. The island is called Tryggö. If you are interested in Viking history and remains from that era i highly recommend visiting it.
(Now Swedish Bohuslän) close to Smögen.
I have been at Ramsviklandet several times. Is it possible to get to Tryggö without having your own boat?
It's never been excavated, so we have zero idea whose tomb it is. But it's a nice story.
So many vikings, have insanely badass stories about their lives. Almost fantasy like, from even Viking dependents like the Norman Richard the Lion Heart, Willam the Conquer, Harald Hardrada, Cnut the Great, and etc
Even once some of them became Christian it didn’t stop them being epic warriors.
Just realized you guys were making video in collab with Epic History TV (after, I realized you've been doing so for a while now so I'm embarrassed it took me so long to realize). Awesome stuff you guys and frankly, I'm impressed you still have the time to make these great videos too. Thanks for the great work and as usual, great narration Alex.
Thank you kindly sir. Yes, the collab with EHTV has been ongoing for months now. I'm enjoying the project very much. We have a few more episodes in the series. Great to see you back in the comment section!
@@HistoryMarche That's awesome and congrats on getting such a prestigious collab - I'm not surprised considering the quality of your videos. Looking forward to the next episodes!
Cheers :D
King Olaf... Your spirit still commands respect and adulation centuries later...long may your memories longer... From Somalia...
I'm a history buff myself but to see these battle with maps and all the stuff a lot of work you put in it thanks this is awsome
Olaf Tryggvasson still lives on in Faroese culture, where one of the most popular "medieval" ballads (written in the 1860's :) ) is about the battle of Svolder; and one of the largest rowing clubs (the Faroese national sport) names all its boats after the ones in the ballad - so the Long Serpent (Ormuri Langi) and the Iron Ram (Jarnbardur), and the men who lost their lives in that battle, still live in the minds of people today :)
The Faroese islands are a Bastion of Norse people, history & culture. As a Norwegian I can't wait to visit.
Love this channel. I'm Iranian and find all the history around the world really existing.
Thank you very much.
@@HistoryMarche i have a few suggestions if you decided to cover Iranian history. I think people will find these four really interesting
Nader Shah
Hasan sabah (the assasins)
Yaqub al lies (brilliant tactician)
And my favorite
Babak khorramdin
Again thank you for your hard work dedication.
Fantastic video. I'm glad to see this channel is growing steadily. It was 68'000 subscribers just a couple months ago and now it's 81'000! It deserves far more though! Hoping more people catch up on this channel as it deserves to be as popular as Bazbattles and Kings of generals etc
that king was a great man, the animations of battle made him justice, good job
Thank you sir.
@@HistoryMarche In Norway we generally do not hold him in much esteem. After all he was a brutal tyrrant that terrorized his own people.
What happened to your voice at the end? :D
Demons took over! You better pay up :)
Actually we're not sure. Our master recording doesn't have the demon voice. It's probably RUclips screwing the video during transcoding.
Meth... Never again!
@@HistoryMarche - don't joke man... Scarry stuff...

Fantastic video! Nice to see you highlight not necessarily the winning characters but those who had indeed noteworthy path despite their eventual failure.
I really love how you illustrate these videos, it makes it allot easier and very appealing to the eye
Nothing like an epic sea battle and a tale of romance and treachery as the backdrop and all this on my birthday, good one HistoryMarche.
Happy birthday.
Please keep up the great work your group is doing. I enjoyed this very much. Especially the narrator.
The whole video is amazing, you rock mate! You should start a podcast of your own, your voice is great xd

King Olaf Tryggvason is recognized as the founder of Nidaros as a city, which is Trondheim today. Trondheim was 1000 years old in 1997. I live in Trondheim. Thanks for this great video !

Looking through the sponsors, then sees epic history... Wow i know you guys colaberated, but its nice to see that they help ya.
You guys are awesome! Love ur vids!
Thanks for the video. It was good.
I ❤️ this story! Thank you
Olaf Tryggvason and Harald Hardråde would make great movie characters with the right director at the helm. Their lives had more than enough of the ingredients for an interesting movie: drama, tragedies, humiliation, underdog, top dog, epic adventures, kingship, breaking bad, betrayals, epic last stands, etc. All in one historic character.
in the Baltic Sea they were captured by Estonian vikings, and the people aboard were either killed or taken as slaves. Olaf became the possession of a man named Klerkon, together with his foster father Thorolf and his son Thorgils. Klerkon considered Thorolf too old to be useful as a slave and killed him, and then sold the two boys to a man named Klerk for a ram. Olaf was then sold to a man called Reas for a fine cloak
Many years later, when Olaf was freed by his uncle. one day in the Novgorod marketplace Olaf encountered Klerkon, his enslaver and the murderer of his foster father. Olaf killed Klerkon with an axe blow to the head. A mob followed the young boy as he fled to his protector Queen Allogia, with the intent of killing him for his misdeed. Only after Allogia had paid blood money for Olaf did the mob calm down.
Good story.
Excellent. Thank you very much....
Finally a video
Haakon broke his allegiance to Denmark. Harald Bluetooth had suffered defeat from Otto II, Holy Roman Emperor during 974. Haakon took advantage of the weakened position of the Danish king to make Norway independent of Denmark. So there should be no reason to write (Denmark) under Norway and Lade during that time period. I still loved the video. Keep up the good work!
I would love to see the Battle of Hjörungavágr where Haakon Jarl defeats the Danish invasion fleet of Jomsvikings sent by Sweyn Forkbeard.
Thank you for the feedback and thank you for watching. Battle of Hjörungavágr is definitely a good suggestion.
