@@Escobar224 oh shit, fixing it now.
What is the music in the video?
seriously, great video and an amazing story. Thank you.
You could've mentioned Mücke's landing party, which evaded capture and had an epic journey back to Germany.
Did you know, that the landing party of Emden actually made it back to Germany. After they knew they were trapped on the island they took a seaworthy Sailboat that was anchoring there to Batavia [Jakarta]. From there they were shipped by a liner to the ottoman empire at the southern tip of the Arabian peninsula. And from there they went via train first Istanbul and then carried on to Berlin.
Muller had guts, that's for sure. Steaming into Allied ports and blowing stuff up was absolutely brazen, but it worked. I also admire his chivalrous character in ensuring the safety of and releasing Allied prisoners.
Indeed. A true man of principle.
Just proof that just because you're at war, there's no reason to be rude or churlish.😉
That or he knew they'd eventually lose so he didn't want to look like bad guy so his arse would be covered after the war.
@@AsttoScott Other german captains who attacked allied merchant shipping like Count Luckner acted the same way.
@@wolfsoldner9029 True Gents they were.
Lost to time men like them are now.
The production quality is through the roof.
Thank you sir.
16:40 That soap advertisement is peak capitalism.
Hehe.
gas
Right after the soap advertisement. Muller: I don't want to make money with the blood of my comrades.
I lol'ed at that when i read it hahahaha that soap manufacturer is a shrewd capitalist. I wonder if the advertisement succeeded.
I'd buy it
The surprise attack by SMS Emden on Madras City(now Chennai) in September 1914 had a great psychological and cultural impact on the minds of the local people. It created such a scare that the word 'Emden' has entered the native lexicon and means 'Boogeyman' in native language.
A fantastic bit of trivia. Would be great to include it in the next vid!
What's the native dialect in Chennai?
@@redornament3248 Tamil
He kind of did mention it at the end of the video though
well that is funny, espaccily as an eastfrisian where the city is located

@@HistoryMarche Sounds interesting
I find your ideas intriguing and would like to subscribe to your newsletter...
This was brilliant.
The graphics, the calm narrator's voice and of course the very well researched story of the Emden transformed into a 18min long adventure.
Thanks for that HM!
Thank you kindly.
18 minute long adventure! Exactly correct, I wish I had said that :)
First Saladin and now Karl von Muller. It seems you have a strong preference for chivalrous military leaders ;)
Hehe, you could be right, I don't know honestly. I definitely always root for the underdog.
@@HistoryMarche A light cruiser vs a merchantman? Might not seem like the Emden is the underdog to the merchantman! But the excellent treatment of captured seamen allowed for mercy on both sides. There's something ironically, paradoxically cool about the idea that 'just because we're supposed to be killing each other doesn't mean we need to be assholes about it.' 😎😎
Was Saladin chivalrous? only when about to be beaten.
@Maximilian L what did he do on emden?
Saladin chivalrous, funny.
I am from Madras city! The bomb shell impact from Emden is still visible in the Madras High Court compound wall, even today! -Cheers mate, an extraordinaire documentary as always !
That's a fantastic fun fact. I never knew that.
If I ever visit Madras in the feature, I will visit that place.
I am a Malaysian and worse still, a Penangite myself. I didnt know that part of history existed when Emden raided british ships in Penang. Something i didnt learn in local high school history syllabus, kinda ashamed to myself really.
Whatever it is, this is a top-notched production from HistoryMarche. Brilliant work, keep this kinda stuff coming to us!
The story of the landing party and how they made it back to Germany is fascinating also. They fell in on the platform of the train station in Berlin and were visited by the Kaiser.
Don't forget the chivalrous message sent to Muller by the Captain of the Sydney, requesting him to surrender.
An absolutely great job. The history of the Emden is one of the most incredible in naval history. Please, if you also tell and in such a wonderful way the story of the other great German corsair of the First World War, the Seeadler commanded by von Luckner, I will love you forever!
Indeed, I'd love to do more stories about various WW1 commerce raiders. Love you suggestion! Will definitely dedicate some of my creative juices towards this.
The story of various German commerce raiders of WWII, such as Atlantis, would be an intersting topic.
A man beside the greatest minds in warfare
The story of the landing party that were left behind on the island just before Emden engaged the Sydney is also quite spectacular. The Great War channel talks about them on their video on the Emden.
Apparently they found an old, rotting schooner that they somehow managed to fix up enough to be sea worthy, sailed to the Dutch East Indies where they stopped briefly before deciding to try and make their way towards the Ottoman Empire. They eventually met an Austrian cargo ship, which dropped them off at modern day Yemen. There they met a party of local soldiers(?) and fought their way trough the Arabian desert with them, before eventually reaching Constantinople. What a journey.
What do you mean 'fought their way through the Arabian desert'?
@@QuintusFabiusMaximusVerr-vf9sb They had to fight the local warlods I believe. I don't remember the details, I just remember they had to fight. There's a few videos on their journey.
I'm speechless. This is the quality I subbed for
Thank you very much!
Content quality
Remember when the great war channel covered this? It was an amazing story glad we can get a more in depth coverage of this story
Indeed, Great War channel did a wonderful job, especially when describing the crew sailing back to Germany. We focused more on the faith of the Emden herself, detailing her exploits.
ooh world war 1... Awesome video, so interesting! :D
Cheers mate! Thank you very much.
@@HistoryMarche No problem! :)
Really loving the animations in this episode. Incredible work!
Would you consider doing a similar story on the SMS Wolf? She was an IGN armed merchant raider who also operated in the Pacific and Indian oceans, destroyed something like 38 other vessels including 2 warships. Made the longest voyage of any kind during WW1 to eventually slip through the British blockage and return to Kiel.
That's quite a good suggestion. Definitely putting SMS Wolf on the list for voting.
@@HistoryMarche and Koningsberg also
It is always so great to hear stories like these about knights which fought with both honor and capability, in such wars where the enemy is considered the literal devil it is nice to see men being a threat towards their enemies yet always maintaining respect towards them, these are the real heroes of war and we should all learn something from them, especially the politicians which decided the peace conditions should have taken a slice of that, it would have saved us a lot of blood if they had.
Anyway, again great video and great topic you covered, I'm already excited for your next video, keep up the great work!
I look forward to another great episode guys.
I hope you have a great year! Your channel definitely deserves it.
i absolutely love naval battles
Im sad to see such a criminally underrated channel like this. My history teacher brought up one of your videos(Battle of Poiters) during our history class, I hope to see this in our discussion and I wish thia channel the best of luck.
Awesome! Where is your school?
Oh that is awesome! Send my regards to your history teacher! And thank you very much for watching.
@@alexanderdoddy7590 Its called St John's School, there are alot of schools under that name so I wont specify any more than this.
@@takemeout5687 lmao my school name is also St John. What a coincidence
Very well done but you missed a really interesting part of the story. the landing party evaded capture and made their way back to Germany. That is an epic that should be told.
Thank you very much. Indeed, the story of the landing party is truly remarkable. I initially planned it as a sequel, but never got around to doing it. Perhaps I'll jump back to finish that video in the coming months.
The Emden's exec officer, Hellmuth von Mucke, led the shore party. They witnessed the arrival of the Sydney, and ensuing destruction of their vessel. Before the Sydney returned to Direction Island, the shore party commandeered the schooner Ayesha and fled. Von Mucke led his party of 50 men on a 6-month 10,000 km odyssey back to Germany, via Arabia and Constantinople, with only four casualties. There is a short book, "The Last Corsair" by Dan van der Vat, that describes the saga of the Emden and her crew. A longer treatment is "The Last Gentleman-of-War" by Lochner/Lindauer.
@@MartinCanada oh my goodness? is that true?!
Toffi Kai Yes it is true! An amazing story.

Now this is what I call quality content, you sir are a legend
Thank you sir.
I had recently watched another video on the Emden. I'm so glad I watched this soon after. What a contrast! The first video was fine. But your presentation really brought home the expanse of the Emden's travels, the character of her gentleman captain, the quality of her crew (especially her gunnery division), and the drama of each encounter. Well done! I'm your newest subscriber!
Thank you sir. Welcome to the channel.
Amazing story. What a virtuous man the captain was. Excellent video. Very well done. Thank you.
Wow, your videos are amazing! I was never into modern day war strategy videos until now.

Great video thanks. Additional snippets:
Emden was such a legend to the point there used to be a phrase, Nee enna avlo periya Emden ah? (What are you? a big Emden?) in Tamil.
That's an awesome fun fact.
@@HistoryMarche en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Em_Magan There is also a local movie called the "Son of Emden" about a really angry father. The phrase Emden is still used today to refer to a person with a short temper in the coastal provinces.

I second that statement! Hope to watch more history stories like this.
The quality of the videos has gone way up since the Saladin video and it shows, keep up the good work, we don't mind if it takes a long time to make one since they are this good. :)
Awesome video and absolutely great story! Thanks. A good addition to the story could be the adventure of a raiding party left ashore. They have managed to get a boat, sail to Sumatra and then across Indian ocean to Yemen. From there they got by land to Istanbul and then back to Germany. I can hardly imagine how they could have done it!
Love your animations, i dont even care on what episode is on now.
