One of the great singers of her generation. Underrated and underappreciated. Packed a big punch for someone who is 4 feet 9 inches. Special person. Gifted artist. Gorgeous girl. Every time I listen to Stephanie I feel like I went to church and felt closer to god.
Stephanie is SANGIN’‼️as USUAL. Her vocals never fail.💯💯👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿🔥🔥🔥. Girl was walking holding them notes. And those ad-libs🔥🔥🔥. “She bad”, yes she is Sinbad.
Thank you for the reaction, Empress. "Home" has and always will be Stephanie's song. She originated the role of Dorothy in the Broadway production of 1975, that the Diana Ross film was based on. The Broadway production won 7 Tonys. Stephanie was supposed to star in the film version but Diana pulled those strings and got herself the role. Both classics, but no one sings it better than Stephanie Mills.
For me this was the best musical performance on the TV show version of Showtime at the Apollo. Extra added poignancy because the song as Stephanie Mills recorded and performed it in the late 80s was not just a rendition of her show stopper from The Wiz Broadway show, but also a tribute to those she knew who had died of AIDS.
This was on my list for you Empress! Happy to see a fellow Patreon already beat me to the punch! 😃. This is such a classic powerhouse performance from Stephanie and of course nothing compares to the enthusiasm of the Apollo audience. I just knew you would be throwin up those 10s for this one. LOVED your reaction!!!
'Dynamite comes in small packages', perfectly describes this performance by Stephanie (4'9") Mills. "Deeper" "Never Knew Love Like This Before" Will always be on my playlist, Empress. You look like you're enjoying being frustrated by Baby Empress, Empress! Baby Empress saying good bye better late than never.
***STEPHANIE MILLS COMES "HOME" TRIVIA TIME!!*** ....It's good to be HOME...(6:04)... - ...Empress, THIS One, is IMPORTANT! ...This was One of "Showtime At The Apollo"'s most REVERED Episodes...It's up there with Patti Labelle's 1989 Ep, Lisa Stansfield's 1990 Ep, & the 'Lauryn Hill gets booed' Ep..... - this was when Stephanie did an appearance promoting her Summer 1989 "Home" Album; She did an 'updated' version of her classic tune from "The Wiz" (2:57) as a tribute to 2 Men who passed from A-IDS, and to acknowledge her Black audience who were there for her, throughout her career....... (0:56)... - ...and BOY, did they show it, that Night! ...Stephanie's Sept. 1989 appearance was timely, too, because she JUST hit #1 on the R&B charts with this version, and (although pre-taped), it showed she was appreciative of it.... - ..something ELSE happened here, too.....this was the FIRST time that the "Apollo" SECURITY GUARDS started to appear in the filmed shots! (5:49) ...Thanks to 'reaction' Videos (like Empresses'), this appearance shot up MORE in popularity in recent times, showing what a *REAL SINGER* gives, when they come "Home"...... (6:41)..... ....a VERYVERYVERYVERY *VERY* Important Episode...... (7:08)....
The lead single from that album was way better - Something in the Way (You Make Me Feel). It just feels like it’s been forgotten about and that was in 1989.
@@EmpressReacts ...well, not really, they just became more 'noticed', especially when more Rap / New Jack Swing Artists started to appear.... but Stephanie was SO loved, the audience couldn't contain it... ; ) ....
I knew of the original cast recording early in, maybe from some TV performance she did as a youngster. She made this recording after the composer, Charlie Smalls, as well as others connected with the show passed, in remembrance of them. She also starred in a revival in 1990-91 that toured nationally. I saw it at the Schubert Theater in Chicago and it was fantastic. The performance that took me out that night, however, was Be A Lion.
I've seen a few really good reactions to simply Red songs I don't think you've checked out their biggest and first single holding Back the Years I hope you check it out one day it's fire fire fire 🎉
Stephanie`s voice is so uniquely brilliant, what a great performance 🙌🙌🔥
