In an entire album filled with incredible songs, this is one of the standouts.
All the Girls Love Alice best song on this album. Elton John is incredible!!!!🎶🎼🎸🎵
That is my favorite song on the Album 😊
Great song that rocks. When I was 13 and this album came out around 1973, kids including myself, were a lot more naive back then. I remember reading the lyrics in the album liner notes and going….”what???”. I guess you could say it was educational because it was my first lesson at that age of what a lesbian is, having likely never heard of it or the term up till then! 😂
That is my favorite song also. That was the the first song I learned how to play on guitar many many years ago. Davey in my mind is so over looked. ❤
Killer cut, can't wait for them to hear it.
Yes this is a great song but tbh I don't think that there is a bad song on this album
Davey, Dee and Nigel kick ass band with Elton
It was quite an experience seeing him perform this live. Imagine 20,000 fans singing the chorus, complete with the WOOOO's. He would kick the piano stool out behind him, sit on the floor while STILL banging on the piano. An AMAZING performer who I was BLESSED to see 13X live.😀😀😀😀
Absolutely! For me, Boston Garden 1974.
SO ENVIOUS!!! OMG - WOULD'VE LOVED to have seen him, at LEAST: JUST ONCE!!! Such a GREAT ENTERTAINER and EVERY SONG: PERFECTION!! ❤❤❤
If that ain't Rock and Roll, then nothing is!!!
Hell Yeah
Davey is STILL playing guitar with Elton. He was great when I saw themabout10 years ago in Quebec. He plays banjo, mandolin, pedal steel - whatever the song / genre calls for. So versatile.
Yep and he looks mahvelous. lol Still the best.
He is an unsung hero in much of Elton's music.
Thanks for playing early-Elton. If you want some heavy rocking from this album, play the song "All The Young Girls Love Alice"
The entire album is great. I haven't listened to it in a while. I'm going to go play it now!
Davey Johnston really shines on this one, such an under appreciated Guitarist! GREAT Song, part of the sound track of my youth!
"Nobody plays like him!" - you got it in one boys! You are starting to realise the diversity in just one album. Think back to Funeral; Goodbye; Bennie; Candle; and compare it with Saturday. You can imagine the extended call and response with a live audience towards the end of the song, plus Elton going wild on the piano! Yeah, Davey Johnstone rocked out on this one.
From my age cohort, this would be on everyone's top 5 Elton songs. Even kids who were not particularly into Elton loved this song. Completely recognizable from first 3 drum beats before the Gibson Les Paul slams in. We all can name this song in 3 drum beats. :)
Listen to "Tickin'", "I've Seen The Saucers" or "Crocodile Rock"
As fans of The Who, you might enjoy checking out the cover of this that they did for an Elton tribute album. It's good. This song sounds like something Pete might have written...Probably the most guitar driven song Elton had...
The theme of this song accurately reflects the Friday/Saturday night situation in England in the 70s (maybe still the case). Guys with no women would together in a pub until 11pm when pubs were forced to close then. With a belly full of beer they would head for a club/disco hunting for women. Usually the men outnumbered the women so fights often broke out inside or outside the club. Elton was just writing what was going on.
Lyrics are actually by Bernie Taupin. Elton contributed the music
Top class double album , not a bad track .. Top top draw and still as good today as it was when released in the 70,s ….Top Top class ❤❤❤
Nigel Olsen gave that hi-hat a workout!
One of my favorite EJ songs ever! The other one is "Funeral For A Friend" the guitar and band in general is just off the chains on both of these and also on "Bitch Is Back".
It's an incredible album full of bangers
Eltons best period in Rock N Roll in my opinion. From songs to costumes and awesome performances. Love his 70s period with Bernie Taupin. Incredible seeing him live then.
You can close your eyes and throw a dart at any of these early Elton songs and you'll hit greatness EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!
Nigel Olsson is putting in some work here!
Saw him in '76. This song and Pinball Wizard were the encore.
This record turned 50 (yikes 😬) years old on October 5th, 2023 and it still kicks @$$ today! Nice review as always gentlemen take care 🙂
My favourite Elton track and by God there’s a few🎸🎤🥁🎹🎼
Elton likes to remind everyone that piano is a percussion instrument!!!
Honky cat should be next lol
I would also pay close attention to the bass guitar line and that drumming. This just came together on all levels to be a total banger.
❤❤❤ this album. Social Disease and All The Young Girls Love Alice. Also Harmony.
The whole album is great. He shows all genres on this album from country to ballads to rockers.
I was a kid when this came out and we would bounce on the bed absolutely rocking out to this one. One of the great guitar riffs and that machine gun drumming. Perfection.
a staple of his live set and always one for audience participation - Davey's guitar is immense !!
As is Dee's bass
Look at the difference between this song and "Street Fighting Man" by the Stones. From 1968 to 1973 is a short time, but the politics of the 60s are already gone and the "me" of the "me generation" 70s is already in evidence. No more revolution, now it's "I want what I want when I want it". Apparently, unless a revolution is short, sharp and horribly bloody, people just lose interest in anything outside of themselves.
Bernie was satirizing lower class British thugs. My first concert was Elton touring behind this hit and album. You can imagine the crowd reaction when he played this. The analogy with Jerry Lee Lewis is accurate, and probably intentional.
Great song, great reaction! You should check out Bennie and the Jets by Elton. 🤘
Elton John was THE MAN back in the seventies. He was all over the radio stations and could do no wrong. He could command all our emotions with so many different styles and sounds he was a musical genius. Check out Philadelphia Freedom and The Bitch is Back for another glimpse of his chameleon abilities
This album launched EJ into superstardom, along with the single Philadelphia Freedom
Watch the live version from Central Park
This song has caused many a speeding ticket since it's release! 😂
1 word.
Superfly ( title track)
I remember a friend had an extra ticket to an Elton concert. I reluctantly helped him out by going thinking "this is going to be boring". Easily one of the best concerts I ever seen! Everyone knew every word to every song he played! He did some really soulful versions of his more commercial stuff that made you rethink everything you thought of his radio stuff. Awesome talent.
The Who did a kick ass cover of this back in the 90’s for an Elton John Tribute album- lots of other great acts covering Elton John
Great song! He closed his show in the 70's at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, he had the entire place singing and rocking till he left the stage...I will never forget that night!🎉
The Elton John Band were tighter that a tick. Saw them live in 1972 and haven't seen better yet. Davy Johnstone is a Master.
All The Young Girls Love Alice is my fave on this album and The Ballad of Danny Bailey.
This one brings back a shitload of great memories.
One of the best songs on this album is a deep cut called All the young girls love Alice. It's a bit of a rocker like this one, but the story in the lyrics make it very interesting.
Guys, you've got to try his album "Captain Fantastic & The Brown Dirt Cowboy" some time. Sublime stuff! More complex, with strings, etc. Just a beautiful album. It's different from his other material. Btw, he's Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy is his songwriting partner Bernie Taupin. The album's a kind of autobiographical account of their early musical career.
Get about as oiled as a diesel train
Gonna set this dance alight
What great lyrics from Bernie Taupin. Song is full of great lines.
"Get about as oiled as a diesel train" says it all...drinking, fighting...a great song by an icon..outstanding album...takes me back to Dodger Stadium in 1975...loved your reaction, I ALWAYS learn something!
If you want an Elton song that rocks, try “Grow Some Funk of Your Own” on the Rock of the Westies album
Lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin. It was about his youth in the dance halls of England. Taupin wrote all of the lyrics for Elton John until he retired. Elton John's music has suffered ever since Taupin left. Elton John's band was top notch. Davey Johnstone stands out here on lead guitar.
Dancing instead of fighting. 😂 I concur! Always loved this rocking tune. Thanks for the always spot on reaction fellas.
Big radio hit from 1973.
My favorite song that summer.
Takes me back to the 70’s as a kid rocking out!
The best of the short list of Elton’s upbeat rock songs in my opinion! Had to be a show stopper live 😊
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is a masterpiece
Elton and George Michael singing “Don’t let the Sun go down on me” one of the best you’ve ever heard. Best of the best!!!
That song is 50 yrs old guys. It’s still a banger.
Fantastic song, so much fun to isten to. Anyone else remember the Flotsam and Jetsam cover? lol, probably not.
Dave Stewart on lead guitar. Dave later played with Annie Lennox in the Eurythmics.
Davey Johnstone played lead guitar. Not Dave Stewart from Eurythmics.
@@edwardcapobianco2975 I saw Stewart playing with Elton on a tv concert. Got confused.
@@robertprice6830Dave Stewart was in a group called Longdancer when they were the first group signed to the Rocket Records label.
@@robertprice6830 oh I got ya. Stewart is a good guitarist. I saw him jam with Ringo all star band a few times.
You really want to see Elton's performance doing the Who's song pinball wizard in the movie Tommy.
Check the version that NICKLEBACK did. Crazy tuff one.
Elton has a few rockers. Most notably he had a big hit in 1974 with a song called The Bitch Is Back
I bought this when it was released when I was 13. Still his best. Not every song was a hit but lots were. And no weak tracks. I am so familiar with it now, it sounds like a greatest hits double LP to me.
Check out All the Young Girls Love Alice from the same album. Dirtiest rocker he and Bernie ever did. Perfection.
Dirtiest rocker would have to be Dirty Little Girl and not just because of the title.
Fair enough, but the theme behind Alice is far more disturbing than the trailer trash theme of Dirty Girls.
@@79BlackRose
Elton's band was one of the tightest bands of the seventies.
Nigel, Dee and Davey were SO good on this album.... Might as well do All the Young Girls Love Alice...
Next EJ Fightin' song?
"GROW SOME FUNK OF YOUR OWN" from the Album "Rock of the Westies". Another monster hit from that Album is "ISLAND GIRL".
Nazareth "Miss Misery" is worth checking out fellas.
Back in the day Elton was my favorite artist. This was my favorite song and
I love when he starts the concert with this one.
Too bad it didn't get more airplay.
I have the album logo of this song tattooed on my forearm.
There's a similar song by Elton that went under the radar called "Street Kids" from the Rock of the Westies album. Probably the same guitarist.
Here's a few more bangers from Elton John: Crocodile Rock, Take Me To The Pilot, Honky Cat, Philadelphia Freedom, The Bitch Is Back, Don't Go Breaking My Heart (featuring Kiki Dee), Island Girl
Back in the day, the band would finish with this- quite the crowd-pleaser!
After so many soulful songs, this was definitely a new fun side of Elton. A couple of other fun songs are Bitch is Back and Philadelphia Freedom.
his best album of all,,i saw him at the forum the month he released caribou....was awesome. off the top of my head thru the haze n fog that was the 70's i saw elton, chicago, doobies, war, marving gaye.ewf, tower of power,emotions....and a few others i know i'm missing. GOOD TIMES.
Love you guys discovering the music of my youth. May I suggest Lou Reed’s Rock n Roll Animal
intro and Sweet Jane.
Please review....The Reverend Horton Heat, ''The Devil's Chasing Me''. A great Dallas band the can really cook some rockabilly to melt your soul. Also, The Meters are an outstanding New Orleans band that would really impress both of y'all. Thanks!
Another up tempo Elton song is "Crocodile Rock," and to get the full flavor of it check out the performance on the "Muppet Show."
Airplay Beats your next Album should be Alice Cooper Killer then you will know why they called him the King of Shock Rock GREAT ALBUM it's got songs like Dead Babies or Halo Of Flies or Killer all great songs
Man! Ya'll was studying this one..........................
In my opinion, Rolling Stones Mag was the first trash-tabloid magazine in existence. To RSM, lies = controversy = readers. RSM is responsible for all the falsehoods that followed Zeppelin their whole career and, stories still being told.
RSM also criticized Elton John as not being Rock but, jumping on the tails of the Rock Genre for record sales…
I like to think, With the release of Yellow Brick, Elton was saying…”Come Get Ya Some”!
Elton and Bernie wrote many of their songs targeting the US market, but wrote this specifically tied to home - the UK
Davey played guitar for Alice Cooper in the late 70’s.
I was a juvenile product of the working class!
Get your belly full of beer Laa and Chee! Are you ready? Yep ! Let’s go! Elton can throw down a straight up rocker, this is the proof!
Y’all should definitely check out a live album from around this time too
It’s titled “17-11-70” after the date the concert happened
It’s basically the first time he blew up and after that he was just Massive
Aloha gentlemen, let's see it was 1977 I was getting ready to go clubbing got this song blazing. I got a phone call you have a beautiful baby girl. Well every year she blasts that song and calls me up. She's 45 now. Rock on girl. Peace and love
Pounding the piano so hard that when the song is finished you see that you got some blood dripping from your fingers .....
Davey Johnstone played with Alice Cooper also
Y'all need to get off the Elton John stuff. Especially these later bits. They suck and they sucked in the 70"s.
In 1991, like now, the world was on edge about a horrible war in the middle east: The Persian Gulf war. The U.S. and its allies had finished the air war phase, and everyone was trying to predict when the ground war would begin. One weekend I walked into a restaurnat called "European Cafe" to work my shift, and one of my co-workers said "Just heard it: The ground war's started." "I KNEW it!" I said, "I figured they'd go in on Saturday night because of the Elton John song!" Later I heard troops had indeed blasted this tune as they rolled ahead.
Love you guys.
Songs I know you will love; or at least have to hear for your cultural education.
American Pie. Don McLean. A special classic of classics.
Gimme Shelter. Rolling Stones
Something Beatles
Rock ‘n Roll. Led Zeppelin
Satisfaction. Rolling Stones
In case you haven’t yet.
So many songs……..but these are a start.
I can't believe this is a theme for a wrestling show in 2023. It's a good choice
Probably gonna get some hate for this but I feel Elton John went too pop oriented from this album forward. I prefer his more introspective albums from the early 70s. Imo you can't get better than Madman Across the Water
"All The Girls Love Alice" on this album rocks even harder than this one.
This our theme song on my high school football team 1974 great memories with this album.
Who is in that poster over your left shoulder? The guy with the bird on his arm. My wife keeps asking and I'm an old white guy🇨🇦
Great song. This is a Saturday night karaoke 🎤 fav for me. Elton let's it rip
Taupin has said It was inspired by his raucous teenage days and in particular, the fistfights in his local pub, the Aston Arms in Market Rasen. Ironically in my area the song quite often played at a disco, pub to trigger a fight between Town A and Town B you always knew it was time to get out of the way before it kicked off. one night, I ended up not getting out of the way quick enough when I got outside something warm was trickling down my arm, I had been cut by something it required three stiches I never wanted to get involved in that stuff. but still ended up getting hurt.
Looking around for something entertaining for a reaction, and you guys have managed to pick one out!
Bernie Taupin lyricist and Elton John vocals and keyboards made an unbeatable pair. Bernie wrote all the lyrics and Elton rocked the rest!!!!!!
What's going on? No "You ready? Yep"!?
