Don't forget Elton John wrote all the music, Bernie Taupin wrote all the lyrics. Taupin was from the rural county of Lincolnshire, and lived on a farm where his father worked, near the small town of Market Rasen. The lyrics of the song are said to be an homage to Taupin's teenage years, and what it could be like on a Saturday night in Market Rasen, which was full of hard drinking farm labourers who liked to have a good drink the night before their day off (most would work 6 days a week). Elton never had a hard drinking night in Market Rasen, he was from the London suburb of Pinner, Middlesex. Market Rasen is about 20 miles from where I grew up.

Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road was a masterpiece double album from the mid-'70s. You should listen to the whole thing from start to finish sometime. Disco was only a thing in the bigger cities at that point and most young people were still listening to rock 'n roll. Elton John was still in the closet, albeit a flamboyant dresser. It was a great time to be young!

Firstly, I don't give a rats what Brad thinks about these Classic tunes.
I care what the 12 yr old me thought in 1973, when I gathered together my pocket money and rode my pushbike up to the local Record Store to buy 'Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting'
    OMG, I was so excited!!
I was addicted to listening to the Radio and collecting The Top 40 Charts.
'Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting' jumps out of the speakers and hits you in the face.
Yes, the lyrics are incredible and paint a brilliant picture for the listener and the Guitar work is phenomenal, however, what I found to be the most valuable aspect was & still is the Drumming.
The strategic inserting of the Snare fills and the opening & closing of the High Hat still impresses me 49 years on. ( I became a professional Drummer )
This is a kick arse Rocker of a song from one of the best song writing teams of all time.
The Lead Guitar work in the Outro is mind blowing and intense, plus Elton is pounding his Piano.
I cannot omit the fact that Elton's vocals are very powerful on this song and it was in the days when he could still hit the high notes.
It's a shame that after Elton's throat operation in the mid-80's his voice was never as good.
From start to finish, this is a rip snorter and a ball tearer of a song.
The Record Producer - Gus Dudgeon is a major reason for the songs' legendary sound and status in the history of music.
I put this song in my Top 100 of all time and that's a mean feat due to the thousands of songs vying for a place.
    Long Live STATUS QUO!!!!!
Francis Rossi from STATUS QUO is one of only a few people that is allowed to call Elton by his real name, which is Reg.

This is called Rock-n-roll kids. It's an ill-faded genre of music that started in the 50s and flamed out during the early 2000s. When you grew up with it, you just expected stuff like this. We were never disappointed! So much great music. The bands in those days actually played instruments, not samples like today. So there you have it. Nothing to get all concerned about. No need to start a channel so you can make money off of it. This is coming from an old man who now says, "You kids get off my lawn"! "Shakes his fist at the sky like you used to do"!, (lyric from Slow Waters. Another fantastic song from Elton)

I always like the reactions and somehow I miss this one since I've been along for most of the ride, but now it really strikes me how well the color matching goes. It's all just so cool. The echo from the light blue Brad above down through the turquoise hair pieces that lead on down to the mostly turquoise shirt. And just all the contrasting colors it's really beautiful. But it's funny to think of you guys a year ago, this was so fun to watch.

It has been supposed that Bernie Taupins lyrics are a throwback to his younger days (well what he used to see in those days). Elton and he wanted to do "an American rock song set in England". There was speculation that it was kind of taking a shot at the Stones song Street Fighting Man.

  • @Critical_Thinker858
    @Critical_Thinker858 Год назад +6

This is a rock and roll ANTHEM! It's all about the weekend and the party. In verse 2, he says, "A couple of the sounds that I really like are the sounds of a switchblade and a motorbike. I'm a juvenile product of the working class, whose best friend floats in the bottom of a glass", with a drunk dad and a mom who's checked out and doesn't care what her kids do. He's looking for some action, a good time with his best buds, mixing it up to forget about the horrible dysfunction at home and his M-F life. It's soooo politically incorrect for today, where "violence is never the answer." But he says he's thinking of shouting at some random dude at the bar, "She's with me!" just to try to get a reaction from him. So much pent up teen angst and frustration that has to find a way out or he will explode. It's at the very heart and the spirit of Rock and Roll. The incredible energy of this song performed live, with that guitar, and Elton POUNDING on the keys and those drums and that rock and roll bass line is a thing of joy to behold. ruclips.net/video/W_0pekDunZY/видео.html and then 42 YEARS LATER in 2016, he's still got it. ruclips.net/video/eBe9e1gqwHM/видео.html Not since Jerry Lee Lewis... and maybe never again. He beat that piano to a pulp.

My Sister saw Elton in Vegas and she was shocked by his band. I had seen a video of Elton performing live and I had recognized his band members had an edgy, hard sound. My sister expected soft ballads but he put out more hard rock. Elton is phenomenal. Now, as far as fighting. It's silly to think that Elton could ever win a fight. Lol

If you'd like a treat check out the live version of this performed at the London Conservatory of Music. Elton, his band, a 90 piece orchestra, and a choir. It is mesmerizing. Hell, check out the whole show if you have the time.

I can’t imagine this song with a choir and orchestra. Some things just don’t go together. Sounds like sardines, Champagne, and oranges. But I’ll withhold judgement until I see it.

Cool thing - you guys contrasted this stylistically with 'Bennie and The Jets' but they were both on the SAME ALBUM - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Really shows how versatile he was early on, before he lost his edge and became just a pop balladeer in the 80s. Another great reacton!

Lex shows good intuition as usual. Yes, Elton is affecting a persona, i.e. a rowdy adolescent whose booze-and-barfights lifestyle on a typical Saturday night in the slums of his English town is depicted. As Elton says, he's a "juvenile product of the working-class/whose best friend's floating in the bottom of a glass." Therefore, he's singing like a teenager bursting with adrenaline and a desire for mayhem.

    Lyrics for the song:
It's getting late, have you seen my mates?
Ma, tell me when the boys get here
    It's seven o'clock and I wanna rock
Wanna get a belly full of beer
My old man's drunker than a barrel full of monkeys
And my old lady, she don't care
My sister looks cute in her braces and boots
A handful of grease in her hair
Oh, don't give us none of your aggravation
We had it with your discipline
Oh, Saturday night's alright for fighting
    Get a little action in
Get about as oiled as a diesel train
    Gonna set this dance alight
'Cause Saturday night's the night I like
Saturday night's alright, alright, alright, ooh
Well, they're packed pretty tight in here tonight
I'm looking for a dolly who'll see me right
I may use a little muscle to get what I need
I may sink a little drink and shout out, "She's with me!"
A couple of the sounds that I really like
Are the sounds of a switchblade and a motorbike
I'm a juvenile product of the working class
Whose best friend floats in the bottom of a glass
Oh, don't give us none of your aggravation
We had it with your discipline
    Saturday night's alright for fighting
    Get a little action in
Get about as oiled as a diesel train
    Gonna set this dance alight

Saturday night's alright, alright, alright, ooh

The English Pub scene in the late 70's was full of working-class folk out for a good night. End of the week blowing off steam. Throw in a few lagers, scotch or whatever their choice...this exuberance lead to punch-ups...it was not too different from anywhere else in the world..This song is about that place at that time..You really need to see the lyrics, it all makes sense & is somehow..cute.
