This was inspired by Elton’s earlier days. He would perform in a bar that was known for fights breaking out. Sometimes it would get so bad that he would have to climb out of the window next to the piano he was playing.
Actually lyrics to all the Elton John songs are written by Bernie Taupin. He says it was inspired by his rowdy teenage years and the fights that used to break out in the local pub every Saturday night.
“Dont shoot.I’m only the piano player” was inspired by that.
Try "Levon", "Daniel", "Your Song", or "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road " by Elton John if you haven't already.
Have always loved Sir Elton's music. Even though heavier rock and southern rock were my go to back in the '70s.
This was a dancing favourite in parties in the seventies. Forget the words and enjoy the music.

The Elton John song that I would recommend above all others is "Someone Saved My Life Tonight", but "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" is great too.
Ive loved this song as well as rocket man since I was a kid on his greatest hits album that my mom gave me as a present.

Forget the words and just enjoy the music, fantastic 1970s party music.
It's about their usual Saturday Football {Soccer} games. They get drunk and rowdy {not so much now, as in the past}. Football, then a dance party, its a tradition.
Some of those words may be how they spell them in Britain. About people when they get drunk that there are mean drunks and there a silly/happy drunks.

I’ve never known the words and realize it’s best I didn’t. I like this song though, it’s a good one to turn up in the car just for the chorus part alone.

They definitely did, I challenge anyone to change my mind. The guitar riff at the end of the chorus in their version gave it a little more edge, in my opinion.
I had no idea they covered this song. Going to look it up. Nickelback gets too much hate. True their original songs aren’t necessarily the best lyrically, but they can definitely play and rock out. Their cover is sharp dressed man is awesome.
The reason you fight after drinking because you're usually pissed off to begin with because of a bad day at work or you just had a bad day you're twenty years off on the grease comparisons the grease music was in the fifties this is the 70s
Elton John fired all the members of his backup band a couple years after this song, in what signaled a major shift musically for Elton away from Beatle-esque Rock to mainstream ppp songs in 1975. Rod Stewart did much the same thing that same year, when he left the rock band "Faces" to pursue American-style pop songs.

That show is just Elton playing solo, but it's one of his best performances ever. It's also from back before he lost his high-end vocal range due to surgery to remove some growths on his vocal cords back in the mid 80's.
