    I used the Michel Thomas method to get started with learing Russian. It worked out great for me. The course was a perfect introduction to the language. It will not teach you from A to Z but will build some basic structures. Actually the course is kind of tricking you into thinking that Russian is actually easy. The most illogical parts, complex grammar stuff and exceptions are ommitted in the course.
    The speaker in the course is a native Russian which really helps. Some Michel Thomas recordings were recorded by him and his French/Spanish pronounciation is far from perfect, which is a big no no for me.
    Disclaimer: I, myself, am Polish and Polish and Russian have a lot of similarities and lots of vocabulary that overlaps. This is why the course was easy for me and probably won't for someone who doesn't know any slavic languages.
    Nevertheless, it worked great for me. I started with around 10-20 hours of Michel Thomas and followed with hundreds of hours of listening, watching movies in Russian and then talking to natives. Now I can communicate quite seamlessly in Russian. I understand the majority of what is told to me and I can hold a conversation with a native. I am still missing a lot of vocabulary and make tons of small mistakes but I don't care and just laugh it off.

    Good to hear your take on this. I'm using Pimsleur for the first time at the moment. Have dipped in and out of MT in the past, but never done a full course.

    I also vouch for Michel Thomas for Russian. Thanks Conor, will see whether they have lessons for Thai :-)

    I totally vouch for the Michel Thomas method, I have been using it for Russian for a few months, it definitively works but I would advice fellow learners to find a way to practice or you'll forget and you need someone to help you correct pronunciation as Conor said.
    Also add some vocabulary learning on your own since it lacks in that department.

    Hi Conor, great vid. Once one has finished the MT total/ advanced courses what techniques do you recommend to keep learning and get closer to fluency? I’m located in the UK at the moment so cannot travel to learn. Thanks

      I think the method is not good. The other two students in the class as just frustrating. Also, their mistakes are big distractions.

    • @alanguages
      @alanguages 4 года назад

      @@deannayang4225 I like the method, just not the non native students making a lot of mistakes. A learner will eventually have to undo the bad habits they made, as they would have copied a non native, resembling a copy of a copy. The quality gets worse.

    • @deannayang4225
      @deannayang4225 4 года назад

      @@alanguages So you like it, except for the students making mistakes? I don't get why the students are on the recording. Is it to make the listener (us) feel better about ourselves compared to them? If they take the students out then they can fit more good material in there.

    • @alanguages
      @alanguages 4 года назад +1

      @@deannayang4225 Yes, I like the method. It would be improved with native speakers. I read others like the non natives, because it makes them feel better about themselves, that they aren't as bad as the ones in the program. It is a really strange way to teach someone, by effectively looking down at other students.

    I agree this is a great way to start and a proven method . I have Michel Thomas Russian, French and Spanish. This method is becoming more popular in regards to "chunk" learning and sentences. This method is very re-enforcing. Once one learns the Cyrillic alphabet they can learn those words and recognize Russian words on signs and menus etc. I like also visual learning at the same time as the audio. Some online teachers on you tube or CDs follow this method in Spanish and French except the words are put on the screen in English , the Spanish or French. You can pause and repeat once the chunk is done and repeat, Then more chunks are added until you can say and read a paragraph. I also write these words down to get the tactile learning involved. One example is "Spanish by Paul" with a few free lessons on youtube. I would like to see a Russian method that combines the aural, (native like speaker) and the visual on screen. My wife is Russian and she was amazed how quickly I could rattle off some beginning Russian phrases after using Michel Thomas Method 12 years ago. Thanks for your video Conor

    • @nicobic

      Yes, and I tried it. It was a good lesson. Slight downside was not understanding the phonetics. Some languages can't be approximately learned unless you're a Japanese/Korean/... speaker. As latin based speakers we have no references. I'd recommend for total beginners to learn the Pinyin (400+ syllables) prior to engaging any MP3 lessons. Don't pay attention to the tones. That should take 2-4 hours. Then Michel Thomas will teach them to you and has excellent mnemonics.
