    I think he hypnotised me into learning Spanish. His voice would put me in an almost half sleep state and I’d be surprised the next day when imaginary conversations in Spanish would flow through my mind. I was like, where did that come from?!

    I spent years with tapes and software and all I was able to ever learn was "yes," ""no," "I'm sorry" I remeber when I saw his CDs at the library and thought something was odd because there was no writing or booklet material in the case. I poped in the CD and was stunned when he said don't wrote anything down or memorize. I thought he had to be kidding, but in a week I was putting togther my OWN sentences, and not some prerecorded one. I now am learning Spanish to talk to my girlfriend. Michel Thomas has changed th world of learning for all of us.

    People don’t believe me when I’ve told them how much French I’ve learned in the first 3 and a half cd’s. People think “Learning French properly would require dozens and dozens of cd’s”. What makes Michel so good is teaching you the RULES of a language which put the power in your hands to intuitively figure more and more of it out for yourself. He’s one of the best kept secrets in language learning, and I’m fine with that.

    The differences I've noticed between traditional teachers and Michele are:
    -He is more patient
    -He always make sure to calibrate the vibe in the classroom so no one feels dumb or "less than other students"
    -He finds a way to incrementally teach every language so it logically makes sense
    -He teaches then those increments with 100% understanding and if ever something becomes even a bit unclear, he goes back to the increment that was 100% understood
    -He loves what he odes(As some teachers hate their jobs and/or lives)
    -He understands the student's mind and then guides him with his communication through the whole process without the student ever feeling lost
    Anyways. Great Documentary! I will go either through his Japanese or Spanish or both :D Tnx for upload

      I agree 100% what you said
      But most importantly IMO is humbleness and his ethics understanding it's up for the teacher to help the student to understand
      A teacher isn't a book method that the student have to struggle with. A teacher is a person entitled to pass his knowledge to another person and if he can't do this, he is a failure, not the student

    There is nothing more wonderful as a student when you are taught by someone does teaching out of inspiration not some laid down rules. I believe that was what kept and keeps Michel Thomas students going and motivated to learn the language.

    I learned Italian from 8 Michel Thomas cd's in less than 3 months while commuting a half-hour a day each way in traffic. It is totally possible. And I hope that those who hear this, will recognize and accept his last comment here in this video - his work stands, get his cd's from your library or wherever you can find them -he was a master in teaching languages, and anyone can learn easily from his methods.

  • @jeanhodgson8623

    Michel was the master with foreign languages. None of that "plume de ma tante" stuff that the public schools use. They teach languages like physics: memorize boring stuff and regurgitate it on the tests. You come away with very little. I know, because I had four years of french and I couldn't talk fluently with anyone. (No-one spoke french where I lived.) I got 100% on tests by memorizing it, but so what. Later, three days in Paris made it click. You can't learn without live conversation using everyday expressions. A classic school french phrase was "Oh dear, our postillion has been struck by lightning!". Very useful when checking in at a hotel! Another classic was, from Latin, "hasta" = spear when addressed. That has been a big help in my life.

He escaped the Nazi's on multiple occasions, fought against them and helped testify against some of the worst war criminals in human history. He only then became a world-class language teacher in the U.S. to some of the most prominent people in the world at the time. RIP a wonderful man.

    A very good system indeed for teaching the structures of a language. Of course, it's very far from complete. For starters, there is no listening comprehension. It takes an extremely long time to get to a situation where you can understand TV, ordinary conversation at normal speed, etc. and this method simply ignores this aspect.With Michel Thomas you will be able to say quite a lot of things in a short period of time and able to construct sentences correctly but the chances are that you will understand little of what is said to you. It also leaves the work of learning thousands of words (and idioms - don't forget them!) entirely up to you. That said, it is a very good method for starting in a language.

      Agreed! It was never supposed to be the only ultimate resource anyone will ever need, it’s simply the best one to get anyone started with the language. It clearly helps A LOT to get you started when it comes to speaking, but even in the end of the courses he says “this is just the beginning of your journey, get yourself a lot of contact with the written and spoken language as you go so you improve on what you’ve learned and keep on learning.” This is just awesome.

    I think if you take a 1 on 1 class with him, then definitely you will learn ALOT in a weekend.
    HIS audio courses were like a "one size fits all" and still you can learn a lot.
    the BIGGEST problem I think is applying the method without him, for example the Japanese Course is SO anxiety inducing due to that female student always messing up or repeating the same mistakes over, and over, and over again.

    • @alangfp
      @alangfp  11 месяцев назад

      I agree with you, but I didn’t feel that in the Japanese course.
      I took it as an opportunity to learn from their mistakes, because I was making some of them too.
      I’m a teacher and because of that I’m pretty much used to people making lots of mistake when speaking. The amount of patience I have could be the factor here hahahaha
      But I see where you’re coming from. haha
      As to learning better with him instead of other teachers applying his method, absolutely true! It’d be so much better with him. But I like the courses overall.

  • @3dmazeXyz
    @3dmazeXyz 3 года назад +3

    It's a nice approach but I did find some problems with his method. The use of 2 students in the recordings is really annoying. You are supposed to pause the recording, say the phrase/answer and then check if your version is correct comparing it with his. But when you play the recording again you must wait for one of his students (who are terrible slow by the way) to say the phrase "translating" word for word most of the time with Michel's help. By the time you hear HIS version you forgot yours, and you were probably way faster than his students. Another problem is the weird accent (and diction) Michel has himself. And they spend a whole lot of time talking in English. So I actually prefer Pimsleur which is quite similar but without the students and with actual native voice actors. I also think MT method is very limited in content, so is Pimsleur. Claiming to take you from zero to advanced is just misleading. I believe both methods are great if you are afraid of talking, they both make you feel confident and capable of thinking in the target language. I bet MT method was much better in person.

    • @alangfp
      @alangfp  8 месяцев назад +2

      In both these cases, you are actually the one that is mistaken. What he taught was correct!! He usually prefers to teach the FORMAL conjugations first, then only in the more advanced courses he says there's another way to address people that you can use, that is the INFORMAL way.
      You can (formal) = (usted) puede
      You can (informal) = (tú) puedes
      You have (formal) = (usted) tiene
      You have (informal) = (tú) tienes
      He's actually playing safe, knowing that people that buy his courses are usually adults that need to learn fast and don't have a lot of time to dedicate to learning. That probably translates to business people or last minute travelers. It's safer to assume you may want to sound as polite as possible first, since it's a foreign language that you can't speak very well and most probably in a country where you've never been before. This is actually quite clever. :)
