I think they might have overlooked the intentionally-specific way in which McDonalds wrote their email response. The exact wording used states, "...McDonald's Corporation has not conducted any neuromarketing studies." Which is technically correct because McDonald's DIDN'T conduct the studies themselves, they hired a marketing company to conduct the study. Their email is obviously misleading and disingenuous...but it's legally not a lie.
McDonald's is not Unhealty mass produced greasy processed food . Not yucky yack 🤮 Does not make you fat , unhealthy, spotty and addicted. Have a fizzy drink with it , full of additives .
You are so right. That's what hiring an army of lawyers (working alongside with public relations experts) can do for a corporation like McDonald's. Non-nutritous junk food, dangerous mono-culture, and out-of-sight profits (by under-paying employees and over-pricing products) marks them as one of the most dangerous entities on the planet.
Yeah, we have become complacent. Unlike in the early 19-20th century, we can entertain our problems away. That means no one really wants to do anything. The FDA and the U.S food standard had it's birth in the early 1900's, and only because the people rose up and demanded the government to do something. Today we protest, but go home and continue to consume.
Studies of the brain are important unless being used in a way to control humanity. Companies are definitely not spending their money to help humanity understand their brains better.

Shortly after we were married in 1969 we discovered tang orange juice - just like the real thing the ads proclaimed. It came as a dry powder in a package. Convenient! We loved it. It was easy to mix and we drank it for several years. Then one time we happened to stop for breakfast in a café and ordered orange juice. Wow! I asked the waitress what it was. "Freshly squeezed orange juice", she answered. We paid little attention to ads after that and weaned ourselves off processed foods and began to think for ourselves.

15:00 I grew up on a farm and we ate at McDonald's only once. It never would have occurred to us to ask our parents to go to McDonald's...or eat out anywhere. It was a rare treat to eat out. A parent's today who doesn't want to cook for kids is setting themselves up for failure. The question every night is "What do you want to eat?" You're training your kids to be self-centered monsters. Of course they're going to throw tantrum. You gave them a choice without teaching them how to make a choice. And no doubt trained them that tantrums work as long as it's maxed out. Suing McDonald's to stop using toys is not going to fix this parent's problem...or her kids problems.

Health and Consumer regulatory authorities in Mexico imposed a ban on the packaging of all products aimed to attract children's attention through illustrations or images in 2021. The aim of the ban is to reduce the likelihood of children demanding their parents to buy certain non-nutricious products based only on the attractive packages. It's been effective so far, besides forcing manufacturers to improve ingredients, formulas and realistic consumer preference.
This is an excellent documentary, but also scary. The nature of advertising is manipulation. I wish they would just admit that they are attempting the most invasive form of manipulation. The silver lining is that we still have a choice to tune it all out and not purchase any products that use unethical tactics to get us to open our wallets.

One Sunday around 10 years ago, someone took me to a MacDonalds. He'd never been to one before, and was around 60, and neither of us could understand why so many people were eating there. Eating over priced cheap food perched on a plastic stool's not my idea of a good Sunday; I love food and life too much for that!
This is the perfect opportunity to teach kids about addiction & learning to control impulses. Why aren't we doing more of that? Maybe most adults don't even know how to naturally cope because they never learned it themselves? You can become addicted to anything. TV, our phones, food, porn, drugs, video games, etc. When we are kids this is the time we need to learn limits & learn how to deal with triggers. Going after McDonald's could backfire. You don't want the government involved & they will be if we force them to stop selling toys. Anytime the government is involved it doesn't turn out good in the long run. Most of them do not have our best interests at heart. They only want it to seem that way. Life is FULL of triggers! If we can't even handle McDonald's we will have problems all across the board throughout life. It'll become more difficult to handle other triggers & you'll get stuck in this vicious cycle. You've programed your own brain to constantly seek out reward, reward, reward. What follows after is depression & anxiety. Your brain is used to this reward. There is a change in brain chemistry happening. So you seek help if it's bad enough. Then a majority of us get placed on medication for it. Starting another harmful cycle. If they place you on psychiatric drugs, you can develop worsening mental issues. The hole keeps getting deeper & deeper. I've been down this road. That's why I'm sharing this. It went from McDonald's as a kid to drugs when I was older & TV. The psychiatric drugs i was placed on did not help me learn to cope. I had to learn way later in life. I'm 40 years old & only hitting the iceburg of learning healthy coping strategies. I should've learned this a long time ago. If i can retrain my own brain now, then it can be done. It's not easy but it can be done.
@kta0702. Yes and during brain development it becomes part of neural process, they marketed cigarettes to children so they would be life and death customers. Because the brain developed around nicotine molecules. The younger the better. Sugar , stimuli, internet and games . Social media. A farm of addicts .
Oh what a powerful message!! I think your take on this is amazing!!! You couldn't of said it better. We do need to exercise self- control and take some accountability on our side!! Thank you for this! Felt like you was shouting at me but, was needed ❤
I had a very similar experience, as I watched the video I started thinking about McDonald's being one of the root causes of my addiction issues then I saw your comment and it makes perfect sense now. I'm almost in my 30s, after years of depression and addiction, now finally tapering off medications and it's a horrible process to go through... Almost like torture sometimes. But I am happy because at least I'm finally learning discipline and good self control, finally starting to get my freedom back and it's the Best feeling in the world so far... Can't wait to finally enjoy life without constantly looking through this chemically induced lense of "everything is (kinda) alright... but life still sucks". To anyone reading this... Don't go down this path, it's simply not worth it... Better learn self control, find a good therapist and make time for healing yourself. There is no shortcut to learning good self control and healthy coping mechanisms! you gotta put in the work but it pays off, you're gonna have something better than all the pleasure and short term rewards in return... True freedom!
Here in the USA we're increasingly immune to this sort of manipulation. With crappy jobs and no paid holidays, there's little to buy and nowhere to go.
The nothing to buy, nowhere to go may be true, but they can still control who you vote for and the policies you support that are outside your economic, political or social interests... id bet US citizens are the easiest to manipulate.
Imagine if advertisers were forbidden from using any kind of visible creature in their advertising. Nothing alive, no skeletons, no robots, no amoebas, no parrots, no moving shadows, no puppets. Basically McDonalds could show empty scenery, their food, their restaurant, their logo ... just nothing that could remotely be described as a mascot. No cartoon versions of any of these. A tree would be fine, but not if it talked, thought, narrated, had any kind of a face or creature-like body parts, or moved in ways unlike trees. Basically it has to literally just be a tree standing there just being a tree. Your watch manufacturer could show a watch, but not the watch on a person's wrist. A dog food commercial couldn't show any dogs, but it could show grass. And any company that pushed the envelope and the regulators found that it was illegal, would get a fine that doubles after every incident. I'm convinced you could make commercials for literally all products, services, and ideas without actually depicting any creatures. But it would hamstring the manipulative impact a commercial could have: the commercial becomes more about showing you the product and a disembodied narrator.
@@waltdill927 I'm a non-practicing intellectual, but I can give it a shot. Car manufacturers jumped on board early with survey-based focus group marketing gurus. See also: The Persuaders by Frontline, for the prequel technology to the video we're commenting on. The car company will figure out that people associate cars with particular things, and then craft their ads based on those thoughts. Such as, SUV drivers want to be dominant and safe. In American culture, cars are inextricably linked to post-adolescent freedom, opportunity, virility, capability, power. We are told everything we want in life requires a car, and because of car-centric urban planning and rejection of mass transit and cycling it's true. But the flip side is that if you have the car, everything else will follow. Buy the thing and achieve happiness. Cars are so central to the American psyche that they've attained spiritual fetish status, like guns. And these objects that control us have become elevated to the same holy tier as religion, politics, and child-rearing as things that people will become intensely and instantly angry about if our unexamined assumptions about them are in any way challenged. As an object of power, the driver wants to use it to feel superior to others. The car must be faster than anyone else, so that if he needs to use it to kill them they cannot escape. It must handle exquisitely, so that his failings as a human driver are nullified by the quality of the technology instead of exacerbated by it. The car must look impressive and frightening to others. By being shiny and having a face at each end, the car attracts attention. By being expensive and a costly thing instead of an investment the car displays his wealth and thus his ability to force other people to obey his demands. A large vehicle is more survivable in a crash, especially a higher one, and the driver wants everyone to know that he is happy to crash into them if they don't get out of his way because he will survive and they will die. Tinted windows allow the driver to see out without anyone seeing in, giving anonymity and thus creating a barrier to communication and empathy. The tint also prevents anyone from seeing whether you have weapons or valuables in the car, meaning you have power because of your secret information which they cannot have. The car is thus a fortress. It's a safe place, a projection of dominance, a weapon. When you understand the American car psychology every single car advertisement makes perfect sense.

I think alot of things are like what they call " euphoric recall" in psychology. Yes the fastfood does taste good as its designed to be addicting, but how often do we buy and enjoy it wimply because our brains actually re-calling a time from before. Teaching kids to control themselves isn't going to work because it's not a fair fight. As someone who works in market research, I can tell you that the story is far more complex than that. I once did a study for a major cell phone carrier, they had some of the weirdest commercials I've ever seen, but we went from %17 to over %70 of respondents stating that "not owning the pictured device causes me to feel inferior." We hit over %70 with the same commercial in almost a dozen test groups of 10-15 respondents. %95 of their commercials couldn't break %20, then bam we get bonkers results. One thing we noticed from aggregate data, Americans are far more likely to be susceptible to advertisement manipulation compared to foreign raised samples. Like... More than double...
@@cherrys7771 thanks for your insight. In this case you have the advantage of being in market research. I have to admit, as I grow older I realize how susceptible we all are to manipulation. McDonald's used to be a little square box with red and white stripes and golden arches, a few tables outside, a tidy menu of fast, cheap and fairly digestible food treats for the occasional family indulgence. Fun for everyone. It's not so much a technology of manipulation we suffer now. It is the "brand" that is being manipulated by a culture overworked, overstimulated, overtaxed by post-modernity and its fascination with "consumer" nonsense. A constant diet of junk and a plague of diabetic teenagers is neither occasional nor an indulgence. Advertising people are unimaginative and not particularly bright as a rule. Their limited "talents" would be better spent elsewhere.
MARKETING IS MANIPULATION because its goal is to convince people to obtain things that they may not need. But marketing is a necessary tool to promote and make the people known the available products of the market, and some of them are needed for living. What makes the difference is the way that is done and the products that are offered.

I think some of the addictive quality of McDonald's's food comes from whatever oil they're using- it has its own, distinct flavor, and everything they fry has that same taste. I think Pepsi and Starbucks also have uniquely addictive qualities in their aftertaste. ** Actual "Best Cola" according to a blind taste test: RC Cola! (then Pepsi, then Coke)
the whole point of any low cost high cost medium cost brand is to generate more sales and revenues, it does not manipulate anyone's mind, the customer requirement is something which they understand better(the marketers and the brand management) so they show them that only ,the marketing people are generally more literate than the sales people not as of in degree way or education way more of the business way so it depends upon the customer whether to take it or not

A parent's today who doesn't want to cook for kids is setting themselves up for failure. The question every night is "What do you want to eat?" You're training your kids to be self-centered monsters.

This is no uncommon thing for brands to have a scent. This happens outside of brain scans. Huge in fashion and events
I think alot of things are like what they call " euphoric recall" in psychology. Yes the fastfood does taste good as its designed to be addicting, but how often do we buy and enjoy it wimply because our brains actually re-calling a time from before. Ex the fries arent good everytime we go to mcdonalds, but your brain remembers the time it was perfect, so you go again. Were also morenl likely to remmeber good experiences rather then bad. So the good fries outweighs the crappy fries. Pushing mcdonalds to stop advertising though thats kind of silly i think its a good way to teach kids to control their selves!
Teaching kids to control themselves isn't going to work because it's not a fair fight. In the left corner: a kid with a not yet fully developed brain, in the right corner: a whole team of marketers, behavioral scientists, neuroscientists, and MRI machines. And probably AI nowadays (if not today, then tomorrow). You don't fight boxing matches outside your weight class. Why do you expect a kid (or even an average, stressed, tired, hungry adult) to win against such a formidable opponent?
@@TheFeldhamster because it's the adults job to tell the child no or find alternatives. Growing up is about learning and sadly there's a lot of hard things to learn in this world. How to be psychologically fattened up and made sick by industry.
I live in Egypt and whilst watching this documentary, a Macdonald's ad popped up reminding parents who are headed for a long trip abruptly "unprepared" that they can stop anywhere before the long road to buy a happy meal for their kids so they would shut up the whole time in the car cause they were making noises 😂
Coincidence?!
As someone with no social media accounts, who doesn't have cable/satellite TV, only uses the internet for its original intention (as a tool for accessing information), and who aggressively uses ad blockers, I am continually baffled by other people's acceptance of marketing. This type of video always makes me think of those types of people who like to boast about how ‘independent’ they are, meaning that they pay their own bills, however, they don’t even notice how interdependent, and completely dependent on a whole set of systems around them to have their basic needs supplied, and how ‘manipu-able’ they are, like we all are lol.

@@milenadocic Perhaps you should think about that, and find something other than a danger to your health, because cereals are you know.
@@milenadocic I found long long ago that generics are just as good, sometimes better. Probably even manufactured by the same companies as the name brands, lol.
@@laurakibben4147 oh yes! I agree
It’s funny that even this video is often interrupted by several advertisings!
Anyone even mentioning Instagram influencers…ha!
Not one thing they modeled or peddlered i would drop dead before buying. I mean intentionally avoiding purchasing that product at all costs.
There's a simple answer to many these "point of sale" manipulative tricks. MAKE A LIST before going shopping, and stick to that list WHILE shopping.
Manipulation is not that hard. Just tell people what they want to hear and say what they want to you to say. Simple. U don't need special gadgets and equipment. I practice it all the time.
This is rlly what neuronarketing is. Its not that deep
Undervalued video on internet
Amazing investigative reporting! 👏🏻
GREAT JOB.
OUTSTANDING VIDEO.
FRENCH TV AND JAVA DISC
THANK YOU SO MUCH.
I rarely go to MD, maybe once a year. Last time I ate MD, they served me rancid smelling fries.
Subconsciously, the rancid smell caused me to hate MD.
Neuro manipulation working against MD.
I will never go back.
*deep manly voice* Hello I'm Marie and I'm a liberated woman 🤣
Some restaurants in Canada started banning advertising to kids via McDo. Some removed kids parks, Ronald McDonald mascot and more. And some places over price so much it's a no brainer. I went once for two burgers and a poutine, cost $30.00. Not necessarily because it was McDo but craving a burger and poutine. So one for me and one for my daughter and we shared the poutine. That price was enough to turn me off of them for a very long time. If government wants to promote health, all they have to do is enforce pricing laws making it more expensive. Hey works for me. 😂 Says the one eating oatmeal, cinnamon, yogurt and an avocado. 😊
Its amazing what lengths people will go to make a profit.
Do you prefer socialism? It comes with oppressive regime. Are you sure you want to be poor amd oppressed? But at least, no marketing 😂
@@mikesamovarov4054 Middle path is possible man. It's not always the extremes. But of course that will require more energy expenditure. That is the basic law of the universe. For example, we have blockchain now which can be used to outsource trust and bring in accountability, but that uses enormous energy.
We need some robust ways of regulations while keeping the government from becoming too strong. It is a continuous fight, but alas people are becoming too dumb to do that
Perception is reality.
Watching this video, I've come to realise what i buy the most of, especially things ive bought for a very long time, I NEVER see ads for. Monster energy drink? I dont think ive ever seen one direct ad for them. What i do see is Monster ball caps, jackets, motorcross gloves, etc. But i never see them on TV or hear of them on radio. Also, they are one of the rare companies on the S&P500 which have never faultered.
Im not invested in Monster nor do i get paid to shill for them. Just my two cents.
The McDonald’s marketing person is now fired! He got 2x fragrance bottles with him and a Children’s meal.
The more someone tries to tell you "I am this thing" the more you often observe that they are, in actuality, not that thing. Apply that to consumer culture and...holy fuck. I once tried several anti-dandruff shampoos to fix my dandruff. Used it daily, as instructed. Well, turns out, I just needed to wash my hair less often. Only washing it a couple times a week when it got really greasy fixed the problem. But was anybody selling shampoo going to tell me that? Hell. Fuckin. Naw.
Look up the history of Unilever
The combination of red and yellow makes us hungry....
Take responsibility for your actions and stop blaming marketing. You're not a child and can choose with your brain. If you have one.
29:35 Can someone tell me this woman’s name? I’ve only just recently started watching investigative journalist reporting, and I keep seeing her. She’s incredible. I’m an ignorant American, and I am truly trying to become more knowledgeable, little by little. Please help 😂
Great doc! Excellent investigation👏
fantastic journalism
PUT THIS ON THE NEWS !!!!!!!! on REPEAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's funny how this film is ALSO manipulating by all this standard moves like music, color, montage and all the suspense.
But don't eat low quality food.
that’s what i’m talking about!! Like are they really trying to open our eyes ? a documentary shown on yt when at the same time they’re promoting a thousand other things??!
Make anything smell like a brand-new car and I'll buy it. I'm wondering if advertising helps cause looting and riots?
That French lady is very strong. You would't be late for dinner at her house.
thank you for being my favorite narrator some narrators do not have the voice or the skill for the job you sound like your talking to me
please crack a joke if the situation is appropriate for good humor I DO NOT PURCHASE AN ITEM BECAUSE SNEAKY MARKETING TRICKS I BUY WHAT I WANT
if i don't want it im not going to buy it so the items i buy are on my list before i enter the store advertising rarely inspires me some ads are offensive
and they piss me off
Aren't people responsible for what they consume? I haven't eaten at MD for at least 10 years. Would be more interesting if one of the major social media apps was the main subject of the research
only if they are informed "consumers" - but when they target the very young - how can you talk about being "responsible"????
@@janetch7384 fair enough, I agree with you when it comes to children.
I would be considered a "foreign raised sample" as you put it, maybe that also skews my perception and perspective
Same, I can get better food cheaper elsewhere..if people choose to eat mc donalds in the first place, then turn around and complain about quality and propaganda afterwards is ridiculous, unless they were born yesterday
The fact that this channel only has 211k subscribers is a true shame.
I always go into stores to get a whiff of feel-good, but I never buy anything. Now I know why.
This is really insightful, thanks for sharing
'It's better to say sorry and not ask for permission, it's quicker.'
'I'm sorry about breaking your shop window, it seemed pointless to ask. This is quicker.'
Free will is an illusion
Rubbish. Don’t think to much into it it is mainly about McDonald you either eat it or you don’t., your free will is there.
Watching this video after watching the movie “They live” hits different
It’s nice to see people breaking the contracts to expose people breaking the contracts. At a minimum maybe it will stop big companies from doing things thinking a nda will protect them.
Excellent documentary 👏💯
We're being manipulated everyday.
It's disgusting that that litigious mother can't turn off her television or say no to her children. People are becoming so weak.
Good docu.. though nothing stops it. It is the trend already and people just go with the flow.
Maree has a very deep voice......
MARKETING IS MANIPULATION because its goal is to convince people to obtain things that they may not need.
But marketing is a necessary tool to promote and make the people known the available products of the market, and some of them are needed for living. What makes the difference is the way that is done and the products that are offered.
That one dude at the scent section DEFINITELY got sued, fired, or unpersonned.
i worked for mc and i can tell you these company is evil allready how poorly managers threath their employes.
I'm immune to advertising. Except for McDonald's, they got me at age 5
God help us
The only one who is manipulated are the companies that buy the services of the companies that sell neuromarketing services!
in Greece we don't have advertisements Macdonats. We have soooo litte Macdonats . only 20, only for tourist ! :) tnk you Greece that keep me healthy !!
It appears that, at some time in the recent past, shame has died.
(then Pepsi, then Coke)
the whole point of any low cost high cost medium cost brand is to generate more sales and revenues, it does not manipulate anyone's mind, the customer requirement is something which they understand better(the marketers and the brand management) so they show them that only ,the marketing people are generally more literate than the sales people not as of in degree way or education way more of the business way so it depends upon the customer whether to take it or not
Marketing IS and has always been manipulation.
We are edging closer and closer to an Idiocracy world
Dang! I thought "Branded" from 2012 was just a movie...But after this documentary, I'm not so sure anymore...
Watch The Century of the Self documentary
