  • #1 rule: You can only 'tween with a vector level
    This video shows how you can use the inbetween function in OpenToonz. This takes 2 vector drawings and adds a number of drawings in between, transforming the lines/shapes from the 1st to the 2nd (transforming lines in the order they're drawn).
    First I run through the basics of inbetweening, then I explain how you can use the built-in 'Guided Drawing' feature to ensure that the correct lines correlate to each other and also how you can use copy/paste/edit to manipulate your lines/shapes.
    #1 rule: You can only 'tween with a vector level
    I try to speed through my explanations as quickly as I can, speeding up the drawing where necessary, so you're not just watching me draw, but there's a lot to get through and I try to give out as many tips as possible along the way, but if you want to skip through the video, here's the list of topics I cover.
    Contents:
    00:00 'tweening intro
    00:23 Comparing hand drawn vs animation tool's mechanical look
    01:16 Getting the UI ready for inbetweening
    (Showing/docking the Level Strip & Changing thumbnail size)
    02:39 Quick run through of the inbetween method
    (inc. Exposing level strip frames in the timeline & using swing for ping/pong play)
    06:17 Looking at the 4 interpolation options
    07:57 Example showing that lines must be drawn in same order
    09:31 Technique1: Using guided drawing to draw the lines in order
    12:54 Technique2: Using copy/paste/edit to keep the lines in order
    14:19 Example: Animate an opening door (from 2 simple drawings)
    15:56 Final example showing light rays coming through a forest

    The tutorial is old but gold. I was familiar with the mechanics of vector drawing and in-betweening from A to B. However, learning that I can incorporate in-betweens as functional variables has changed my perspective for the better. :) Thank you, this makes many things so much easier, especially when working with complex animations. I am always looking to simplify things; often, we make things more complicated than they need to be. Great tutorial! 👍

    Thanks so much Darren! I just finished your 11 hour course on Udemy. It is awesome! There is no way I could have done it myself, and it was only $12 at the time. Best $12 dollars I ever spent(so cheap). Just saw your donate button. I will have to use that to make up getting such a good deal, almost like robbery, getting such a good deal. The tweening part is so cool! Seems like I could use tweening along with other techniques so I don't have to animate every single frame. Kinda fluff it up and do the hand animation in just parts of it. With the OT program being so extensive it makes the possibilities of creativity so much richer.

      Aww, thanks buddy. I'm so pleased you enjoyed the course and found it useful. I spent a long time putting it together and trying to make sure it was just solid information and no fluff.
      You're right. The price is super cheap. I don't get a lot of say in that, unfortunately, but it's not really about the money. I'm always excited to hear when students found the course useful, so thank you for letting me know.
      Yes, the auto-inbetween tool is really useful. You'd need to break down your animation into several columns to build up a combined movement, but it's easily possible. I've had an idea for a simple animation that would make use of this and I hope to try it out some time.

      I've had OT for only 2 weeks now, was able to produce the kind of wobbly, sketchy animation I had in mind. Much to learn, having a great time so far. I'll take you up on the offer of answering questions if I really get stuck. -- My first toon is political satire, with the F-bomb sprinkled throughout, and definitely something a lot of people wouldn't care for. With that caveat - if you care to see what I've done - the spoiler is that its liberal point of view will be clear from the get-go. - Links can't be posted in RUclips replies, but it's the most recent video on my page, so you can click my avatar to get there. I never realized Opentoonz had a Cacani feature for auto tweening. By following the stroke direction, it allows the algorithm to interpolate properly. Shocking it is not a feature in Harmony nor Adobe Flash/Animate. I gotta test the difference now with Cacani and Opentoonz to see if OT can handle complex tweening like Cacani. Thanks so much for this video!

    • @DarrenTAnims
      @DarrenTAnims  Год назад +1

      I'm pleased you've found out. It's such a powerful feature, but you do have to work with its limitations. It needs to know which stroke is in which order.
      Flash and Animate CC also had a similar feature, but it has its own issues.
      Regarding complex tweaning, yes it can. But it's often better to separate your drawings into smaller pieces to get better results. Have a play and see how it works for you.
      Good luck 😀

    • @derekstepan3888
      @derekstepan3888 Год назад +1

      @@DarrenTAnims Yes they do but it doesn't show stroke order and the programs get confused at where certain points of the line are supposed to be. Animate hasn't updated their shape tween function since it was Macromedia owned which is insane, and I love Animate for its easy-to-use tools for fixing sketches etc. Harmony has the same issue essentially too. Both are geared more towards symbol style animation rigs. Seeing Opentoonz have stroke order and such from key to key is stunning honestly. Only Cacani was doing that from what I was aware of.
      Being a solo animator, the auto tweening for hand drawn animation comes in handy. Tweening for me takes forever by hand (for me personally). Especially useful this is for subtle movments like slight head turns and the like haha

      It is great tool. I tried the door effect as you did and also window same way. Have question. I secretly hoped that the inbetweening will work also for the color change. But is not working. Do you know any other way how to animating color changes automaticaly. Example, when I did the window opening, I started with darker blue and ended with light blue and wanted to do light reflection effect. Thanks.

    • @DarrenTAnims
      @DarrenTAnims  5 лет назад

      No, this inbetweening feature only works by drawing the lines, but if you fill in each frame in the same colour, you can then change the colour (as a whole, solid colour) using the colour tween feature (as shown in this week's animating a portal video: ruclips.net/video/Vh-QlctEjrA/видео.html from 08:48). But for a reflection, you might want to just use a separate column with a streak effect and Matte it in over the window to simulate something being reflected.

      Thank you friend. Sorry I missed your comment, but no, I don't have a video for that, but I can tell you that you can reduce the number of frames in a few different ways. The easiest way is to select the full range of frames, then right click and inside the "Edit Cell Numbers" flyout, click, "Time Stretch". The name is a bit misleading. This lets you either stretch or shrink the number of frames used. Don't forget that you can try it and if it doesn't look right, just hit Undo and try a different number. Good luck, DT

    Is there any fast way to do this? I want to use auto in-betweening but I just don't like having to do this for each movement of my animation. For example, I want to animate a stick figure, pretty simple thing to do. But I don't know if you can, like, use a hotkey to *auto-auto inbetween* if that makes sense.

    • @DarrenTAnims

      Thanks Logan. You know, that's exactly what I'm thinking of doing at some point. It's make the videos more linked together, more interesting and probably more contextual to the problem being explained. I need to work through a few more projects first, but then yes, I'd like to do that. The only thing is, a lot of animation is doing the same thing over and over, and I don't want the vids to be the same week after week, so I need to get my head around that. But because of that, I'd probably be releasing videos less often. I'm putting together some thoughts for an anniversary video atm, which will include my thoughts on that.

    • @DarrenTAnims
      @DarrenTAnims  3 года назад +1

      This is the main video I have regarding using the auto-inbetween function. But for this to work, you really need to draw in a vector level in OpenToonz, rather than import a vector image. For one thing, vector import doesn't always work very well. And for a second, how can OpenToonz know which line in your first drawing should transform into which other line in your final drawing. So I don't think you can really do this.

  • @robertwinkler8640
    @robertwinkler8640 5 лет назад +2

    Superb tutorial: fairly short, straight to the point, focused on helping one create immediate results effectively. No fluff or fillers, just the right level if you're already (at least an itsy-bitsy bit) familiar with the GUI, and even funny at the right places. Nice diction and style of speech, too. Liked and subscribed already halfway through it.
    Small piece of (hopefully) constructive criticism: the music is not really necessary, and it becomes at times distracting. Since you also have an accent/dialect (mine is bigger than yours :) the music also makes some words hard for the listener to understand. (Haven't seen your other vids yet so you may have already addressed this in the newer ones.) Using the music only in the intro and outro - and maybe here and there in-between to 'brand' certain types of sections, if necessary - would still add the colour you want, without sacrificing any clarity. Just my 0.02 cents, and not meant to offend. I'll be gobbling up all your OpenToonz tutorials in the next few days! Thank you for the excellent job.

    • @DarrenTAnims
      @DarrenTAnims  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Robert. Thanks for your kind comments and time taken to share them. 'No fluff or fillers' is exactly what I'm aiming for. I've seen too many tutorials where someone tries something, it doesn't work, then tries something else and before you know it you've wasted 20 minutes on a non-solution. So all my videos are scripted and tightly edited, so I can make sure I cover everything I want to and only the things that I know work. It does make for, sometimes, videos that go by too quick, but I'm constantly working on trying to keep the balance between delivering the info quickly, but not too quickly.
      And yes, all (constructive) criticism is always welcome. I've had suggestions about not having music a few times in the early days (this video was from a while back too), so I now have quieter music. But I feel that without any music they just seem too quiet. But let me know otherwise if you disagree.

      Provided you've drawn each drawing in the same order, it should be ok, but the inbetween tool isn't perfect and sometimes it doesn't work as we'd expect.
      There's two things you can do in these situations:
      1. Draw separate body parts on different columns. Then there's fewer complications for the inbetween tool to consider and it sometimes works better. You can merge them together afterwards.
      2. Remember that the inbetween tool is just a tool, to help your animation. It can sometimes be used as a guide. Maybe draw a couple of dots and then manually draw in the parts, using the interpolated dots as a guide.

But I want to do minimal frame-by-frame animation in it. Which free program will allow me to do that or at least make the process easier? Thank you in advance!!@@DarrenTAnims

    Thanks Darren, this is really handy, but I can’t see the “in between” option on the level strip, when I highlight them. I’m using opentoonz 1.5. Has this changed? I’ve tried right clicking, but can’t see it in the options there either.

    • @DarrenTAnims

      The number one reason for not seeing that option is not using a vector level. The auto-inbetweeing only works on vector levels.

    I have a small request from my side..
    Could you please update the Udemy course.. I have enrolled it..
    Rigging, cut out and few other concepts are missing.. it would be really helpful if you update it.. or could your please arrange the videos in RUclips ( in an order) ?
    And give some number, so that we can follow easily, since the videos are not in a sequence..
    Thank you.. you are so kind ❤

      Thank you.
      Because it's difficult to order the videos in RUclips is one reason why I created the course; to create an ordered way to learn.
      If I was to add lessons for rigging or fit out, I'd make a separate course. There's so much to conver. However, I do have some videos on RUclips covering these subjects. You can find them on my channel in their own playlist, called cut out animation. It's not a complete guide, but the first video covers a lot of the basics. You might find it useful.

      You can only inbetween with vector levels. I'm guessing you're importing non-vector drawings (png out jpeg). You can convert them to vector first, but this extra step will show you down. Getting used to drawing in OpenToonz is the best way in the long run.

    • @DarrenTAnims

      You need to use the animate tool (the top tool on the toolbar)
      Select it. Change the type of movement to rotation or position. Go left the first frame of the column to set the initial position. Scale, move and rotate the drawing. Then go to the end frame and do the same again.

    Hello Darren T.
    I have a question about inbetweening. Is there a way to make a morphing like the one that you can see in this flash video about water :
    ruclips.net/video/v5LFIVUu444/видео.html
    At the time 3:04 , he is using a "shape hint" tricks. It give to the water the illusion of deforming like moving waves...
    I tried to do this in Opentoonz but without success...

    • @DarrenTAnims
      @DarrenTAnims  3 года назад

      Hi. That's a great question. As you probably know, we don't have shape hints in OpenToonz, but I'd guess that you could do something like this in OpenToonz with a bit of practice. Hmmm. I might park this and give it a go some time. I think it would involve creating each individual wave in its own level, then merging them at the end. Thanks for the question.

      The main reasons for not seeing "inbetween" on the level strip is either because you've not highlighted more than 2 frames or you're not using a vector level. Be sure to use the correct level type before trying to inbetween.
      But if you're still having problems, you can drop me a message (on my facebook page or the Discord server) with a screenshot that includes your xsheet/timeline with the frames and column header showing and the level strip with your drawings highlighted.

    Is it possible with raster level?

    • @DarrenTAnims
      @DarrenTAnims  5 лет назад +1

      Not directly, no. The tweening is the vector points being interpolated. However, you could create a new vector level, create the tween, then convert the vector level to a raster and if you wished, merge that new raster level with a current level. Or you can use the vector level as a template to trace over on a raster level. So there are a few options to using using it.
