The Ultimate Rain Scene - Jurassic Park - NO PHOTOSHOP!

- Опубликовано: 30 июл 2024
- A couple of years' ago I did a rainy downtown block but I struggled to add the rain except in photoshop. I got a few rude comments about that! I was determined to create a diorama with rain and record it all in camera with no photoshop manipulation. What better scene than from Jurassic Park with the jeep sinking into the mud and a T-Rex roaring at you! Here is the end result - do let me know what you think.

Fantastic diorama! This has to be my favorite movie, and you've done a great job of recreating an iconic scene!
Thanks so much.
That is absolutely world class Kathy………
The rain looks fantastic.
Thank you! I hoped it would work.
Stunning! I love the way the rain looks... and adding that touch of mist was brilliant.
Thanks! The mist is in a can and it makes such a difference with and without it.
This is incredible! I love it! 🦖❤️
Amazing!! Absolutely love the projected look, really impressive
Wow. What a fabulous theme and the rain effect. Wonderful.
Thank you so much!
wow! this one is not a clickbait. ! great!
A superb diorama Kathy, you've captured the iconic scene perfectly and I think the rail effect is the icing on the cake, absolutely fantastic.
Thanks a lot Robin
Excellent!! That looks great 👍
Amazing work, as always!
Absolutely LOVE it!!!! Wow amazing. Love these movies and definitely love your diorama
Thank you!
Wow..... another awesome build.
That final shot looks great.
And projected rain!
What a win there!!!!
Thanks Rex. I’m now thinking where else I can project backdrops etc.
Fantastic! Thank you Kathy.
Thanks Ron.
That’s really cool! Excellent diorama 👏
Brilliant job Kathy - and so watchable 💛💙
Thanks a lot!
Brilliant as always 👏
this is great Kathy. enjoyed it a lot. my favorite character
Thanks!
Love love love the results!!!!
Thank you so much
@@KathyMillatt you are welcome 😊
Love it!
Wonderful!!
It turned out great Kathy. Best yet, it was a learning experience. Thanks for the sharing and tips. Cheers!🍻
Thank you. It was a challenge but fun to think through all the options.
Excellent job! Thanks for the tips.
Thanks a lot.
Very cool! Love Jurassic Park and this came out great!
Thanks a lot.
Great build. 👍👍
Glad you like it
Wow Kathy that looks great! Very nice work.
Thanks Jim
Wow this looks so cool. I like the rain.
Hi Kathy. Whoa! What a magnificent diorama. That captures all the iconic aspects of a very exciting scene. Again you had to overcome some unforeseen problems. Not least was the falling rain. Your front projection solution was great. The results very realistic. Thanks for another great build. See ya. Take care.
Thanks Norm. You just need to watch the shadows with the projector.
Very cool !!!
I'm impressed with your work, wow! Wonderful. You are so detailed, perfect. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏💚💚💚💚
Thank you so much!
Just awesome 👌 👏 👍 😍
SEÑORA,USTED ES MI DIOS 😨 INCREIBLE 😍
Wow! Wow! The movement created by the projector is excellent. Good stuff
Thanks so much!
That looks great.
Fabulous job.
Your a fabulous artist, great eye.
Great diorama again Kathy, my grandson is going to absolutely love watching this video 🙂👍
Thanks so much 😊
Brilliant! Your ingenuity and creativity always amaze, but you have outdone yourself on this one...............
Thanks George. It did test me.
So ingenious . A BIG work !!!
Très ingénieux . Un très grand travail !!
cheers from Belgium !😉😊
Thanks so much!
Great work, you have a gift !!! Jurassic park is my all time favourite movie since I was a kid, I recently purchased a 3d printer and will soon be printing a Jurassic park model I wish I had your skills to paint them lol keep up the good work!! Thank you for sharing :)
Good luck and painting is practice so I’m sure you will get there!
Impressionante, estou tento o privilégio de assistir a uma artista um fenômeno, meus respeitos, parabéns, excelente trabalho 🤜🏻🤛🏻.
Excellant !
So good!
Thank you.
Looks fantastic Kathy! I don’t have any suggestions for the rain, but the projector looks cool! Happy days and model on! 😎
Thanks so much!
This looks absolutely awesome and I think the projected rain works really well. The only tweak I would make would be to include the odd lightning flash somehow... but on the whole... another fantastic build!!
That’s a great idea!
😮omg awesome ❤😊 you did a great job
Thank you!! 😊
this is so cool ,love rexy and I hope she's in JW - dominion , the rain looked ace especially with the smoke spray :)
Thank you so much and I’m really looking forward to the next film.
Wow, so good.
Thanks!
Brilliant diorama Kathy of this movie scene. A skillful use of colour on the Mr. Bolin figure stumping down on the vehicle with the kids. Then the issue of making it look as if it was raining. The projector did a respectable job, but I did notice that the T-Rex shadow cast onto the rear wall was causing a visible blank area. I then wondered if there was a way to split the rain projection via prisms and mirrors for the foreground and background to do the filming. Though putting that issue aside, I have to say even without the rain effect, it is still a smashing scene from Jurassic Park. An amazing piece of modelling once again Kathy and maybe there is a CGI master and modelling subscriber watching, that could add the rain frame by frame for you. Now it is time for this old dinosaur to go and get fed too, so do you fancy joining me for a pizza and a monster movie binge, LOL.
Thanks. I put the camera as close as possible to the projector but shadows are an issue.
Had you tried magicians invisible thread suspended randomly from above with drops of cyanoacrylate painstakingly dropped on at the relevant points? 🤔 PS, sorry forgot to say how awesome the diorama is 👏👏👏👏
I did think about it but it seemed like a lot of hard work and perhaps a CT little large.
Holy hell that's amazing!
Thank you so much!
@@KathyMillatt you're welcome 👍👍
amazing work
Excellent Kathy, I also did a similar diorama with the T Rex breakout (also as a video here) and applying alot more gloss varnish and resin to make it look wet from the rain, however making rain drop effects was abit challenging due to my lack of skill.
Great job!
Rain is certainly challenging. I’d actually like to go back and rework the base for a heavier raindrop effect.
Fantastastic idea
Thanks Ian
Awesome!
Thanks!
good build thanks lee
Thanks Lee
To me you are vest model and dioramas builder your the queen 👸 of diorama,s and Mosel builder keep up the great work 👍 I love watching your video,s you have a wonderful and great day be safe ❤
Thank you so much!
You have no peer in making really cool dioramas. The only one thing I might say, something in my aging memory says the T-Rex was a female, but that is based on many years since last I watched the film. No matter, the diorama is amazing, carry on.
Thanks so much John. You are so right! Oh well. I’m sure I’ll get a load of comments on it.
Hi Kathy, true to form, another stunning diorama, you've come up with an ingenious solution to the rain problem, as for the people who said you cheated, I'd like to see them doing any better, it's not easy scaling down nature, anyway, as always, stay safe, all the best from a Sunny Scotland, Stephen.
Thanks Stephen, this does work but I think there's loads more experimenting to do.
Awesome job
😁
Hay Kathy love tour stuff been watching for a good while keep up the awesome work, I know your British and I am aware that the words you guys across the creek talk diffrent.. lol 😉, but the vehicle is a Ford Explorer.... loved JP sence I saw it for the first in the drive in.
Thanks! It's funny on the words isn't it. Jeeps as a company were really rare over here so for me, they were always just 4 wheel vehicles.
Yeah I figured lol
impresionante
Hi Kathy, what can you say Fantastic No (Magnificent) yes , I can feel your passion ,the need to got it right, All the best Brian 😃
Thanks so much Brian.
When I need rain while animating I usually use eye droppers with water and or you could use a spray bottle and have a lower shutter speed/lower iso to get the motion blur. Love the idea you took to solving the problem.
Thanks. Eyedroppers sounds fascinating. I worry about the effect the water would have on my scenery. I usually use a lot of white glue that goes white again when wet.
@@KathyMillatt also the scale is off of the water drops so I’d recommend a mist. And maybe you could just set your diorama in with some transparent glue or something
awesome
Thanks Fred
This is awesome Kathy, it really captures the feel of the movie!
Thanks Nigel
Great solution and I think there may be even more potential here! You could add lightning (as mentioned) or even sound effects (sound of rain, thunder, roar of T-Rex, etc).
That would be so cool!. I think there is so much more to try with projection generally.
Bellissimo
Hi sweetie looks fantastic. X
Thanks Lynne
This diorama looks amazing (of course, Jurassic Park was and still is one of my favourite movie experiences of all time). I was one of the people suggesting scratching acetate in your last rain scene video and I am so glad you gave it a try. Sorry it didn't work out as well as I'd hoped. Love the use of the projector and the rain video. It really brings some life and movement to a static scene and helps give that extra level of realism.
One thing it does give me ideas of, which you might like the sound of, is utilising an old stage trick often called "Peppers Ghost", used to give the impression of a transparent entity (normally a ghost) on a live stage production. Maybe a thought for a Hallowe'en themed scene???
Continually loving your videos and tutorials. You are always a great source of knowledge and inspiration.
It's funny you mention Pepper's Ghost but it's on the list to try next for rain - this diorama just didn't quite work with it.
Fantastic. Lower the light level and add some flickering to simulate lightening with the projected rain would be really cool.
Bryan, definitely loads of mileage here to improve the rain.
@@KathyMillatt I think the rain is fine. I was just thinking about the overall ambiance by some how flickering the overhead lights making it more like a night time scene during a storm. I'm just gobsmacked how good this looks.
this is phenomenal!! I'd love to see more Jurassic World stuff
They are so much fun to do.
Kathy,
Remarkable model. Incredible artistry. Inspirational techniques. Superb use of Pepper's Ghost. Curious how you created the rain. Absolute Mastery. And a beautiful lady, what more could I ask for?
Glossy mud? Nah. If I needed my mud to be glossy I could have made the mud subbase. Allow it to dry solid. Then paint on some (oh dear God I'm saying this,) WOODLAND (please don't make me finish) SEC...(I CAN'T!) Pourable Water thinly over the top.
OH WAIT! What about a thin coat of clear varnish? "Curse you W.S."
As always I love everything you design and apply.
If Leonardo was a woman...you would have modeled THE LAST SUPPER. Only with trains on the table.
Adjuration and Affection always
Jim ~ NY, USA
Thanks Jim. I suspect the water I used is much like the WS stuff.
That's one beautiful diorama Kathy, the projected rain looks great, you may have just set up a challenge, someone out there is going to try real water being sprayed over there diorama next, thank you for sharing your amazing creative talent with us.
Thanks Simon. Real water sounds like a nightmare to me!
@@KathyMillatt You're right but I bet it would look great if you got the scale correct.
Amazing. Do an ALIENS diorama and I'll love you forever! 😍
Your Diorama simply simply nails it! It's a perfect miniature version of the famous scene.
If you don't know him by now. You might want to look in the scenic photography work of _Abandoned Miniatures_ here on RUclips. His photography work is outstanding! Maybe he can give you some tricks on how to make the rain look even more real.
I do follow Abandoned Miniatures and he is so good!
W.O.W.
The best part of JURASSIC PARK is that the first victim of the T-rex was the lawyer
That was a great scene!
Amazing build! Absolutely smashed it! One thing I was wondering was, is this dio designed to always be in rain? If it is, then would it help to add gloss to the Rex and some puddles in the mud, to help sell it in more? At the moment it feels too dry, imo.
Also, If you wanted to create a more realistic rain effect, could you use a planter mister to get some small beads of moisture, combined with the projector? Could create a cool look?
I did drench it in gloss varnish but it just doesn't show. The Model Wasser stuff probably would have worked better as it is thicker. I am always wary about adding water because white glue turns white again when wet and I don't want any odd reactions!
Great effects!! Wow. Do you ever spray models/dioramas with a water atomiser for your shoots?
I don't because I often use white glue that turns white when it gets wet - not a great look! I probably should give it a go as I don't think matt Mod Podge is as bad.
This is really a Masterpiece of artificial Rain.
By the Way, now that you have the Projector, you can also try to project the Blinken Lights on R2D2 in your Diorama. But maybe you would need a special lens in front of the projector to get the Picture-projection small enough for the R2D2 model. Please try it.
That’s a great idea. I think it’s about the video as well as the lens.
@@KathyMillatt Hello Kathy, maybe it is possible to focus on a small thing like the R2D2 bei placing a photo lens in the reverse direction. Unfortunately, I cannot tast it, I don't have a projector here.
For a first test, maybe a very low cost lens from Ebay will do it.
By the way, the woodn dust from the milling machine, that I offered you some days before, see the latest Boomer Diorama Video, starting at roundabout Minute 8, he is covering his artifice tree trunks with this material, but it is not Material from me. There are many other purposes it can be used for, just the fantasie ist the limit. If you are afraid, I'm a psycopath, maybe you have a post box or someone else I can send it to. I don't have so much money, that I can be a patreon for you or support you with money, but I can give you some useful Material this is maybe a better way to use my short pressed budget.
Have a nice week, always creativ ideas and happy modelling.
Kind regards
Only things that could improve it would have been to include the rail for the explorers, and possibly the actual road. The mud was on the side of the tour road rather than a dirt road there, and the metal track that powered the vehicles...
Potentially, also adding the toilet.
I wondered about that after I had done the mud... too late then! The toilet would be fun thought.
"It's time to bring the T-Rex to life," says Kathy.
"Noooo!!! It didn't end well in Jurass ..." "Oh." says I.
😀
Great work as usual. It looks fab. My only comment - and I'm being ultra picky here - is that (I presume) the shadow of the T-Rex seems to make it look like s/he has got a rain repelling forcefield. I wonder if it would work with back projection? Though you might need two projectors, one back projection and one front projection to fill in.
Or if the projector were higher up and pointed a bit downwards, so T-Rex's shadow was shorter, and out of sight? Might have funny direction rain though....
I gave the camera as close as possible to the projector but as the two can’t be in the same space, there are always shadows. Back projection could work but a bit beyond me right now.
Nailed the model, not sure about the rain! try a waterfall of white sand in front of the camera lens close up so its not in focus?
I tried projecting on acetate up front but it didn't look as good as projected across the diorama.
Hi Kathy!
For PLA print smoothing, I would recommend a technique I picked up from Aaron over at Galactic Armory...
Use the UV resin from resin printing and a sponge brush to lightly coat the print then cure it in the sun or a UV light box.
Repeat the process until your layer lines are gone then lightly sand to complete.
I've been using this technique for over a year now and I hardly sand at all anymore.
It is a minimal 90% of sanding time shaved off of all of my prints! 👍
I am going to have to try that but I am worried about it filling in the fine detail lines too. Is that a problem for you?
@@KathyMillatt It can be but if you are careful (and patient) in those areas, it's no more of a problem than straight sanding or using putty or Bondo.
When I do accidentally cause a problem with fine lines, my etching tool corrects it nicely.
I make custom toys as a hobby/side hustle and much of that is 18" & 31" customized Jakks Pacific clone troopers. Their helmets and accessories are small but my finished products are smooth with great detail and required minimal sanding on my part.
The extra bonus using this method, especially for the full sized cosplay armor and helmets that I make, is that uv cure time is dramatically less than bondo & filler.
* If I remember correctly, Aaron first showed that method in his Boba Fett helmet build.
@@MichaelCravatt thanks so much. I will try it.
@@KathyMillatt Good luck and I hope that it works for you. 🙂
* Side Note: Keep up the great work! Your videos are truly enjoyable and very helpful!! 😊
@@MichaelCravatt thank you so much!
That's an explorer
Ford sold a lot of Explorers because of that movie!
I wonder if there would be a way to integrate rain projection within the diorama itself? maybe even from multiple points in the model? Like have a projector projecting rain on the backdrop, but also have it projecting onto acrylic at the opening of the diorama?
I wondered that but I haven’t found a small enough cheap projector yet.
Excellent Dino Diorama... (I have been asking other people to make Dino Dioramas, and you made one..!) Ideas... How about making a WW2 with Nazis getting attacked by Dino's..?
Thanks!
Instead of sanding, you could use resin to smooth those FDM printer layer lines but it is nastier to get it done.
I've not tried it because it seems so messy and I'm worried about filling in details. Not that sanding isn't messy but in a different way.
A well done and dramatic diorama Kathy . The projected rain is excellent . Just one thing in the last two videos you have referred to Tamiya putty as an epoxy putty , the tube stuff isn't epoxy . Epoxy is a two part putty ( I'm sure you know this anyway ) . Tamiya epoxy putty might have been a better choice for filling those gaps , it's thicker and can be smoothed over with ware to minimise post sanding . Keep up the excellent work , always look forward to the next video .
My bad, it smells like epoxy!
Just wow ... I gots to gets me a 3d printer
I couldn't live without mine now.
Fantastic attention to detail, well done! May I suggest you consider a way to make Rex look “wet”? No ideas how, only a suggestion.
I did spray him with loads of gloss varnish but it didn’t really seem to show. Perhaps a thicker paint type was needed.
One of these days you will make a great modeller , oh yes that’s already happened, great
Thanks Nigel!
You are amazing!!! How did you make the fence posts?
I designed them in Blender and printed them on an FDM printer. The files came with fence posts so I used those as a guide but I wanted to do separate wires and theirs were moulded in.
I would literally pay you to make some for me lol
@@KathyMillatt how many inches are the fence posts
Hi mate as a newbie in the diorama scene etc. Using acrylics can u once paint dries go over the paint with the enamel washes. Or am I going to be in poo-poo Creek. Thankz for these fantastic and interesting videos with tips. Cheerz.Denise W.A
Oops... I meant oil washes not enamels. Cheerz
I do oil washes over acrylic all the time. It’s a great combination.
I also saw that STL file, but thats too big for me :D I wondered if you could downscale that to a 1/35 scale and still be printable
You can downscale as long as none of the pieces become too small. The SLA version is already smaller.
Kathy, may I give you an idea for the rain?
If you make a diorama with a reservoir underneath with water.and then pump it up with a small pond pump..make small holes in the diorama so that the water can drain into the reservoir. The water that is pumped up goes through a few tubes with small holes. Like they do in movies, but on a small scale.
I find that water does not scale well as ripples and droplets are too large. How would you make the water fine enough for the scale rain?
I hadn't thought of that, I see the problem..maybe with very small holes where the water comes out.And then with enough pressure,I just looked this up (it's an example) ruclips.net/video/_l9O4Sb6huc/видео.html
if you make the holes smaller, you get smaller droplets. A preheated sewing needle might work..
It might be an idea. By the way, the Diorama looks fantastic.
Thanks. This one wouldn’t cope with all that water but maybe a future diorama.
What spray putty did you use to fill the print lines in the gate?
I use Motip spray putty.
@@KathyMillatt thanks!
Hi Kathy. I just discovered your channel by way of the dude who does abandoned miniatures, as he mentioned you.
Love your amazing work, especially this Jurassic Part diorama.
Love your quirky fun personality too.
I've never 3D printed before and not very technical and going to start out using foam and bulsa wood to build dioramas. Do you have any advice?
Thank you
My only advice is to enjoy it! It takes time to build up the skills so start small and just try out new stuff.
@@KathyMillatt thank you so much Kathy. First one I'm m going to build is the opening snowscape scene from No Time To Die the new James Bond film, showing Madeline's house with Safin chasing her on the ice 😁
Great scene! Snow is one of my favourites to models.
@@KathyMillatt Thanks again KM 😁
I saw your foam based snowy bridge model video. Really amazing.
Through your website do you have an email I could possibly pick your brain at?
I'm new to this but a fast learner.
Glad you like the scene. It was so epic in the film, which I waited 6 years to see, with almost 2 years of "pandemic" time in hold.
I've lifted great images of the two part orange/yellow cabin from Google, and high angle shots, wide angle shots. After just a year of release, I think that scenes already iconic.
My second build I plan to make the second part of the No Time To Die pre title sequence where Bond jumps off the bridge in Matera, also now iconic. So that will be harder, but thinking of 1:24 scale and chearing background with a nice HD print out, and making bridge foreground as well as river below, mountain scale, trees all in miniature 😁
Again, loving your videos, your my new You Tube idol lol
Have you made a video on how you git into model/diorama making, learnt your skills etc? If not, I'd love to see one like that.
God bless
Stevie G
@@thejamesbondshow9754 Always happy to chat. Those are both iconic scenes. I use IG or FB messaging for chatting to people. Just use my work FB not my personal as I never go on except for work! I have told my story loads of times but I don't think I have on a specific YT video - more on the podcasts or chats I have been on which would be on other people's channels.
Beautiful work. My only complaint is that nothing is wet..... 🤔 The vegetation, the trex, the jeep.... If it's raining that hard shouldn't there be puddles and water dripping off things? Or a least a good sheen to everything?
I sprayed loads of gloss varnish on but it just didn’t show. The vegetation is a bit delicate but I could have used that model water on the T-Rex
