  • Vivarium is a 2019 science fiction thriller film directed by Lorcan Finnegan, from a story by Finnegan and Garret Shanley. An international co-production between Ireland, Denmark and Belgium, it stars Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on 18 May 2019, and was released in Ireland on 27 March 2020 by Vertigo Releasing. The film follows a couple (Eisenberg and Poots) that is forced to care for a child while trapped in a seemingly perfect neighbourhood.
The opening scene depicts the lifecycle of cuckoos before introducing primary school teacher Gemma and her handyman boyfriend Tom. They drive to meet with estate agent Martin and follow him to a suburban development of identical houses called Yonder. Martin shows them around house number 9. He asks if they have children, and when Gemma replies, "No, not yet", he mimics her perfectly. After looking around the garden they find Martin has vanished. Attempting to leave, they repeatedly find themselves back at number 9. They drive around the endless, identical streets until they run out of petrol.

If you like this movie I think you would really like the show Black Mirror (although I feel like the episodes are kind of hit or miss, but when its good its REALLY good)

I'm a huge fan of Black Mirror. The newer seasons have been a bit of a disappointment, but the early stuff was incredible!

@@natesfilmreviewsI agree, season 3&4 were the peak for me. The later seasons only had like 1 episode per season that I liked. Although I think the new one they did with Aaron Paul and Josh Hartnett wasn’t too bad.

Watched this about a year ago. It was alright: strong imagery, good acting, mystery. I guess I just couldn’t get behind the message that was in your face “Suburbia is bad, marriage is pointless, raising kids is hard and you shouldn’t do it.” I didn’t really see any positives portrayed about the situation they were in and that doesn’t seem real to life and what they are trying to capture in this metaphor.
The interviews around this movie were kinda interesting though. Lots of talk about the earlier short this came from “Foxes” and how the 2008 market crash affected Ireland.

I get that the Surburbia message was heavy handed, but I honestly didn't think they were saying marriage is pointless or you shouldn't raise kids, I think it was elevating the day to day life struggles in a surreal an unrealistic way to magnify the actual struggles of real people. In the end Jesse Eisenberg and Imogen Poots didn't hate each other they just drifted in a way that to me felt very realistic.
That additional element is fascinating though! I'll have to look into it!

Yeah don’t understand the disdain from some for this movie. Felt like a black mirror episode. They need to make more smart movies like this

Its super smart, funny, and dark! I was blown away by it! Have you ever seen any films from director Yorgos Lanthimos? If you havent I feel like you would love his style! Very similar in ideas.

I'm honestly surprised so many people dislike it! Did you see his newest film Nocebo? It was excellent as well!
