My interpretation of the movie was how empty the"American dream" really is. You're told to get a nice house, have a kid, do work and that will equal a productive, happy life. This movie takes that concept and exposes it to what many actually feel when they follow that line of thinking. We have a nice house but I still feel empty, we have a kid now but I still feel empty, I work every day, everything is provided for, but I still feel empty (which is also portrayed in the taste of their food). As it turns out following that line of thinking is just the same day repeating until you literally dig your own grave. The super natural aspect is just used as a tool for the metaphor of the underlying horror of the American dream and the endless cycle it has perpetuated.
Well the American dream fit the standards of a 1950’s America. Think of it, in times of chaos and worry what do many think of? Safety. Through conventional ways it is seen in a family, a nice house, a secured job- however the America that was then obviously is changed over the years and our ideals are constantly changing at rapid paces now. So the American dream, I believe, isn’t empty because it can be just unfulfilling, it’s empty because it doesn’t fit the standards we have today and through the years Americans have found more ways to become safe and fulfilled. (if that makes sense) i like your theory btw :)
I just watched this film earlier today and ehhhhhh... I totally agree with your points. It was painfully medicore. I wished it would have leaned more on the bodyhorror bird aspect more, or the scifi or just the horrible situation of being forced to raise a parasite that you dont at first know is one. (Like the birds most likely dont know until its too late) it had its moments but on paper it succeeds way better than on the actual film. I was wishing it could have been visual novel or smt rather than the film that it was.
Everything about this movie felt like a black mirror episode, not in a good way tho, kinda took me out of the movie. Also the ending was so disappointing. It was just so confusing and didn’t really make sense,I really liked the concept tho.
The scene at the beginning with the magpie nest explained the sci fi aspect. The two leads were used by a parasitic creature to raise its young, like a cuckoo uses the magpie
I watched this at 2am one day and was left wondering what the hell I was watching. Like I got it, and some movies can be done really well without really discovering the point (the cube trilogy comes to mind-no clear reason in end but done really well) but you still had no concept
Ifucking hated this movie the ending was a normal ending I wanted I wanted them to get out I wanted a little bit more of the explanation sorry this is not one of those think about movies movies are like that they want you to think about the interpretation whatever or what not this movie was not one of them fuck that ending and I knew it was Martin the whole time
Daniel Talks Movies I showed it to my dad who is also a film lover and he actually enjoyed it more than I did and gave it a B and seems to have split ratings online, it is currently on prime and I do recommend it since the concept is interesting enough to be engaged enough with the film but I hope that you enjoy it more than I did, horror is just very sentimental to me so I’m generally a little more harsh or forgiving for it which isn’t always a good thing to do😂🤔

Agreed, don't show aliens and not explain it in any way at all.

*also damned I didn't leave the room but I forwarded probably those same 30 minutes without having to rewind as well
If A24 did a sci-fi movie this would be it.
