    Great List Nate! You got a lot of different opinions compared to what I've seen a general public say...and I respect it. If I'm to say my list currently... 10. Tarot (Never saw the trailer, so was anticipated, saw the movie, and besides two scenes where they seem like they're doing something, ultimately felt missed potential and was pretty mad at just seeing the film play in that terrible trope format that we've seen with Bye Bye Man, Ouija, to name a few. 9. Imaginary (Besides one good actor, and the subtle smiles that I actually thought was clever for the bear to imitate, this film was just terrible. The teen acting was some of the worst I've seen all year. Fairly generic, and those that say the final act is the best, yeah I'm on the other side for that one. I thought that was just the worst part of the film, especially with that fakeout! 8. Arcadian (Padded out with no directions that interested me, and when it headed with the guy going with the girl to her home, I almost just wanted to quit the film. I hated the direction it went into, and I think where the film goes there, goes down hard. 7. Madame Web (So bad it's good. But, for real. The fact this film had such a large budget and pushed out what it did was an embarrassment. I only appreciated the small parts where IT ACTUALLY TRIED TO GIVE THE CHARACTER'S, actual character, but yeah, it sucks. 6. Somewhere Quiet (My first introduction to a film distributed by Quiver, and it wasn't a good one. Well directed, but the style is just a way to play out a story that is not consistent at all, no payoff, and it physically triggered me how I'm pretty sure the film was just showing someone who has lost themselves and can never go back, without any reason to back up why/just something that I hate. Depression taking someone over, without any payoff, any reason, or any reason why they showed us what they showed us. 5. Blood For Dust (Well Acted I will say. But, this film just felt incredibly dull to watch. It was just boring, and watching it through the entire runtime was painful.) 4. Wages Of Fear (Netflix just bringing anything on their platform. Hated the characters, despised the ending, and thought it was just a massive waste of time. 3. Strangers Chapter 1 (I kid you not, I haven't been infuriated with characters like this FOR A VERY LONG TIME. I hated this so much.) 2. Megamind Vs. The Doom Syndicate (Takes all the passion and love in the original Megamind and just ruins every character in any way it possibly can, with some of the worst juvenile comedy I've heard out of animation.) 1. The Mouse Trap/Mickey's Mouse Trap (I don't hate this because this uses the Mickey IP. I hate this because the film is just horrendous. No creative kills, nothing done with its concept, terribly executed, a meta joke here and there, but then the movie decides to push its own plot into stupidly. And easily, the worst budget abuse I've ever seen done on a film. The film was granted 800,000$, and the film seems like they spent 50$ - 250$. I am not kidding, it looks that bad. So, not looking forward to this. They actually made Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (THE FIRST ONE) look like a freaking tolerable slasher. Screw this movie.

    I enjoyed it and the only problem I really had with it was that lost shot. Sigrid would have been reported missing within a few days of not returning home and her friend knew who she was with, a well known multi millionaire, but we can see a couple of years have passed and Christian has somehow gotten away with it.

  • @Keth417
    @Keth417 День назад

    I liked the film, and quite liked the slow burn of it leading to a very contrasting turn of events in the last 2/5th's of the film. I would say that more (even some!) explanation, or at least 'examination' of the phenomena could have been displayed by the authorities, and the lack of such felt me feeling isolated with just the experience of the family members. The title of the film is playful.... it's not about how society handles the situation so much (thus no scientist chats or media news), but more so the family and loved ones reaction. I do like and admire this new wave of 'the returned' and society 'surviving it', and I do now have a soft spot for this film,... but I think the Scandinavians a tad pretentious in their almost hand-off approach - it's almost like they made half a film and left the rest up to the viewer to ponder. Perhaps a sequal? but change to 3rd gear perhaps?

    Main criticism from people that don’t like it is that it’s kinda all over the place plot wise… I’ll watch it, I loved the original growing up, watched it a lotttt, and have a sandworm weaving it s way through my arm as a tattoo, but I’m not excited by the prospects of these belated “legacy” sequels in general, when I do watch them they never live up to the original, but I think I wanna rent this one and hopefully enjoy it. I like bill and Ted face the music, this seems to have got the originals vibe right in the same kinda way..

    I did love it! Yeah it follows some long used and well worn rom-com tropes, but it's really the first lesbian movie to do that, and that's exactly what I wanted! A lesbian rom-com that does the same stuff straight rom-coms have done for decades, but without falling into the same queer film tropes we're tired of. For once, it's NOT a coming out story, nobody's cheating on anyone, none of the love interests die in the end, they're not trying to hide their "secret love" or any of that crap. It's just a lesbian version of a straight rom-com and (sadly) that is what makes it so utterly refreshing! Because for whatever reason, Hollywood has just never bothered to do that before.

    I really don’t understand Blumhouse’s game plan the last few years-it seems to be to just release as many movies as possible, but they’ve gone to super low budget direct to streaming services type crap, and don’t seem to care about the quality of the product…are they just relying on the name making money for them? Just essentially scamming people with trash while they still have a brand some people haven’t figured out isn’t that great yet?… initially what they were doing with all the sequels and spin offs of all their franchises made a lot of sense as a business model-crap movies in general IMO, but it made sense…nowadays I just don’t know what they think they’re doing?…also interesting what you said about there but being a lot of horror in the movie- that seems to be a part if their plan nowadays too-really watered down, just jump scares no gore no tension etc (I don’t know this is the case but it’s what I’ve heard on review of a lot of their recent output…)

    • @natesfilmreviews
      @natesfilmreviews 11 дней назад

      Blumhouse has learned that they can release PG13 horror movies of any quality and teenagers will watch them. If you look at Night Swim from earlier this year that movie cost 15 million and made 57. They know they can turn a profit by paying very little to get a movie made and it doesn't really matter the level of quality. Every now and again they release a movie that's actually good and I wonder if that's how they build budgets is by releasing all these trash movies haha.

    Perfect casting. I felt her awkwardness so much. The first scene said everything, when she was making her video to teach other people to have more confidence. You could see she was really trying to teach herself. I felt like giving her a big hug and telling her everything was going to be OK. I listened to an interview with Bo Burnham about casting and he said everyone he saw was pretending to be 'not confident' whereas the girl they cast played it the opposite way. She played it as a person who was naturally introverted but who was trying to act confidently.

The casting was of ultimate importance and they all turned in solid performances.. yet what was the message? We don't need the message but what was the director (Tom Ford) wanting to leave us with? Horror with some other unseen Style? Doesn't make sense and falls flat eventually. I can only try to understand this work from Tom Fords brain/heart which is 'humans are horrible/violent/ugly/....how do we find the spiritual beauty in people in order to repel, understand and forgive?' I have watched this movie twice and I still don't like it? The actors are all awesome, but I just didn't like the story. Guess I just couldn't suspend belief. I'd rather watch the Exorcist.

      I guess it depends on your perception of the supernatural. Whether it's demons, ghosts, monsters I always have to suspend my disbelief. I think Ari grounds the story in enough reality that to me it feels like something that could actually happens, very similar to the Exorcist.

    Wait what, you thought his performance in Joker was weak? No way dude, he was awesome ❤

      I thought his performance was solid, but the movie itself was weak. It felt very juvenile and copied a lot of ideas from movies that already exist, just in a way less interesting format.

    So basically this movie should be watched for the effects. So what is the bottom line on this movie, a multi generation demon curse?

      Pretty much. It's very simple and not very interesting.

    Good review. Def agree about going into it blind - I did, though I'd heard about it years ago and kept meaning to watch it, I knew very little about it. I was familiar with some of Villeneuve's work so I knew to expect quality and he absolutely delivered here. A very hard watch at times but as you said, well worth it. I kept thinking about it for days afterwards, it haunted me. What the twins discover in the film shook me to the core - and that doesn't happen too often. It is powerful, heartbreaking and packs an awful punch.

    As part of explaining the plot, I think it would be important to point out that the requests to find the father and the brother are in seperate letters - one each for the siblings. I thought that was very important. And that they thought their father was dead and did not know of a brother's existence.

    I think I’m gonna watch it anyway, if only to check out the fx that the trailer teased… reminds me of when I watched The Void- I didn’t really care for the story but enjoyed the tactical fx, creatures etc…so I think I’ll give this one a watch but go in with low expectations😂

      I feel the exact same way about The Void. Effects were exceptional but the movie was pretty bland
