Yuki is a hero down here on the Gold Coast, Australia. He always travels down to run our marathon, and won it in 2013. Everyone loves seeing him battle it out and give it everything. He has the heart of a lion.
Did you see his post race interview? Yuki said something like "half the field didn't couragous enough to go with me, the other half didn't consider me a threat". Bloody awesome!!
Yuki has run more sub 2:20 marathons than anyone else, something like 110 of them, and he's won nearly 50 of them. He can bury himself at the end of a race like virtually no-one else. Pushing yourself to your limit on a marathon is called zipping up your Yuki suit!
Yuki has got to be the most underated legend. The man can throw it down, he's up there as one of the best and crowd favorites, and his determination is second to none. Thanks for the vid great job on documenting his effort.
it's worth noting that kawauchi woerked a full-time government job in Japan at the time he won Boston. He wanen't even pro, and couldn't receive sponsorship money from brands due to his job and Japaneese laws. He's an absolute legend.
@@suparcamel5852 Even on this day the next 2 people were Africans. He got lucky because the Africans decided not to run, otherwise we would have won as we usually do. There are no conditions in which we cannot win. There can be conditions in which decide that winning is not worth it. Kawauchi can do whatever he wants, and he still will not win
Please deal with Courtney Dauwalter! I mean, she won Western States, Hardrock and then UTMB this year. She runs permanently with the men's lead and has been breaking all records for years. She is worth to be mentioned on TRP.
Thank you TRP. I watch most of the world's top marathons but I missed this race completely. Then you presented this as a human interest perspective. Fantastic! Thanks again. Cheers.
LOVE YUKI! I so hope that somehow he gets to run in Paris next year. VERY COOL HOW YOU CUSTOMIZED YOUR SIGN-OFF IN THIS VIDEO… “And as always, Kawauchi is an absolute legend…” 🏃♂️🏆🏆🏆
Kawauchi is a legend, especially in the rain. Boston learned not to underestimate him. Well all others are pummeled by the elements, Kawauchi shows up to win. And he does it with wildly wasteful form.
Some correction for your content here: Only top 2 of the MGC have secured their Olymipic appearance, while the 3rd, Suguru "Sugar" Osako's spot is not secured. Based on the rule of MGC, if any Japanese runners run faster than 2:05:50 in the next 3 Japansese marathon majors, Sugar's spot will be taken - If more than one run faster than 2:05:50 then the fastest will obtain the spot. If no one breaks 2:05:50 then Sugar will go to Paris. Hense the MGC is one of the most critical Olympic marathon trials.
It's true. That was what Suguru Osako did for Tokyo Olympics 2020. He didn't come in Top 3 during the MGC trials and so had to run a fast one at Tokyo Marathon to get his spot as the 3rd representative.
Another crazy aspect to Yuki is as of October-23 he has run 127 full marathons, 118 half marathons and 10 ultras, beginning in the late 00s. This when it's rare for elite marathoners to compete in more than 2 marathon per year. He also holds the record for the most sub 2:20 marathon finishes, with 117 to date He's a proper living legend
everyone that follows the Marathon & Majors knows about Yuki Kawauchi and the Boston 2018 Marathon so as soon as you mentioned him and an "all out" start... ahahahah "classic" , loved it !!!
Amazing. And great that this channel covers stories like this. I like to follow the top runners in the world, for sure. But distance running is all about guts.
I think there is something to do with shoes getting heavier after mid point of the race since they absorb more water over time. So going out fast into heavy rain before they are soaked gives you competitive edge perhaps.
Kawauchi is rarely the fastest elite runner at a major event but he seems to always be one of the toughest. Nasty conditions tend to bring out his inner beast when others crumple.
The rain, the thumbnail pic that was obviously Kawauchi with his elbows out ... I wondered why you were doing another video about Boston all these years later. What a great runner. Thanks for doing this.
To start off with, no doubt he's an absolute legend. But I think what he's proven here is that he's a specialist: he can win when the conditions are exactly right. In rainy weather, he has an advantage. If Japan can send three marathon runners to Paris, it'd be great to give him a chance to shine for the (not unlikely) event of a rainy marathon.
People from hot places tend to do better in heat and worse in cold, and people from cold places tend to do better in cold and worse in heat. That's both nature and nurture I would think, because you spend most of your life dealing with the conditions you have at home. And some parts of Japan have a great deal of rain.
I don't even like running. But I love the stories you tell on this channel. The video is always the actual events and fits the script. The characters are compelling and enough back story is given that even a non running fan like me can get interested and excited. As this channel grows I'd love to see a better voice actor. I don't know if this is read by a high quality ai or a person, but the vocal fry is just too much.
I ran the Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon held on the same day, and crossed paths with Kawauchi and the others towards the beginning of my race, man the conditions were brutal but these guys were absolutely killing it in the downpour.
Back in the day l used to focus on 5k's. They were what l was best at. I won many races with the same take it out hard tactic. Doing that in a marathon...a whole different level!!! Like him also, bad weather was my ally. Searing heat, pouring rain, even blizzard conditions. You embrace it and make it a strength.
To answer the question at the start of the video, I think the 7:54 2 mile by Jakob Ingebrigsten was the most unlikely. Sure, Jakob is one of the greatest middle distance runners of all time, but 7:54 is a massive cut off of the previous world record
@@pete5691 True, because Hicham El Guerrouj stands in his way of the GOAT title. Jakob will have to beat one of these middle distance records, preferably El Guerrouj's 1500m record, to be considered in the same or better realm than Hicham.
Yuki Kawauchi is definitely my favorite marathoner of all time. Absolute legend surpassing Kipchoge and Bekele for the most marathons ran under 2:20:00. He’s done it 100x. 😱 This man THRIVES during harsh conditions which is what marathons are all about. It is about adapting to situations you are being presented and still running strong. I remember it rained so hard while I was doing 1k reps that I wanted to stop. Then Yuki came to my mind, and it inspired me so much. I ran my 1k reps in the hard rain. “Keep going like Yuki!”
Only the first two runners from MGC automatically qualify for Paris. Awesome I am planning to do the Gold Coast marathon next year hopefully 👍

So happy you covered this. One of the most underrated performances of 2023
It's only underrated because there was no English subtitles. Japan marathons are pretty intense and high standards.
Absolutely love Yuki.
As a native Bostonian I'll never forget that marathon.
I love this guy! He's like the everyday, underdog, 9-to-5 worker who happens to tried his hardest to play in the big leagues. And won!

The conditions decided the race that year. Africans simply cannot run in freezing, driving rain

That guy only needed to train with the likes of Kipchoge, he has terrific mental power
I imagine if he had the opportunity to train like the best athletes from a younger age he would've been phenomenal
If anyone deserves a place on the Olympic team it is Yuki he shows the fighting spirit of a true Olympian.
well 3 people had more fighting spirit than him so they get to go

I would love that. A lot of track fans would know very little about her achievements......and they are mind-boggling.
Absolutely, she's phenomenal. Winning three of the most competitive ultra marathons in one year is a ridiculous feat.
Not possible, he needs to put out at least 20 videos titled kipchoge's new plan is crazy!! before he can touch on her
Courtney is a freak of nature but ultras really aren't the main aspect of this channel
