Going with a smaller wheel is the best thing you have done on the Defender. You will enjoy them! We need to see some more videos of going up the steps with the new tyres!
Yes we need to fit the built in compressor now so we can run them with some low pressure ( and pump them up again for the drive home ) Also need to get the winch fitted.... the 4x4 place is closed till December so i have a few weeks to get all this sorted !
Oh wow!! The discovery 3 & 4 ( along with nearly all BMW's from 2012/13 till now ) is also 5 by 120 mm but the Discovery 5 and Evoque and Jaguars are 5 by 108mm. Yes, I find it silly how 4wd's are getting bigger and bigger rims when what they need is more side wall to create a bigger foot print. Great video !!
As I have said many times, you and your team could do a video on paint drying and I would watch. Fantastic content chaps. Question for you, I have order a p400e HSE with 20 inch wheels, am I right in thinking I cant fit 18 inch wheels to it?
Hi - I have a suspicion that show offs with the big flash engines are indeed banned from small wheels....I think you should be able to go to 19". But as you can see my car did pretty well with 20" wheels and all terrain tyres...
You can buy plastic wheelnut covers off eBay dirt cheap. They usually are available in black or chrome finish. That way your cheap blue nuts would work fine especially with your custom made hub covers and look really good.
when replacing my steel wheels, I put the locking wheel nut nearest the TPMS valve, then add the other four nuts. When replacing the dust cap, use the LR logo to align with the TPMS value. That insures the dust cap has been fitted correctly.
Simon, as you say.... choosing a tire is a bit of compromise, sure!! You can choose between two options: the first, having two sets of complete wheels, tire + rim, one 18 "with Mud-Terrain country tires for weekend excursions and another 20" with tarmac tires from Monday to Friday. . The second is to use only a set of wheels with off-road tires, but more aggressive than the Goodyear Wrangler Adventure you have recently installed. The reason is that the tread depth of that tire is 12/32 "; however the Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac has a depth of 16/32", that is a little more than 3 mm more, and that is a big difference in mud. In addition, the Duratrac is stronger (Kevlar), with a tread more designed for difficult terrain as demonstrated in the dynamic presentation of the Defender to the press in Namibia. By comparison, the Wrangler Adventure is 30/70 off-road / on-road, while the DuraTrac is 60/40. The DuraTrac only hits the Q-speed rating, but I doubt you'll exceed that speed; on the other hand, as it is certified for snow (at least in my country) the speed index can be lowered to Q. The BFGoodrich K02 is also a very good option, speed rated S, but it is 50/50, although with a good carcass, but an outdated drawing; It has been on the market for a few years now and is about to be replaced. Another Q code option on a 70/30 (off-road / on-road) tire is the Cooper Discoverer ST-Maxx POR LT265 / 70R18 124 \ 121Q, which features improved tread depth (18/32 ") and VERY resistant carcass. I am aware that it is 265mm wide, but the rolling radius is only going to increase 1.69%, which is within limits.
Did you find a way to change the rolling radius of the tyres or is it something you have to go to the dealer for? We've been looking into getting a new Defender to replace our 14 year old Freelie and I really like the look of the steel wheels. Looking at potentially a D250 HSE which comes with 20" wheels as well but can be configured with the steelies still so it must be compatible. One thing I was wondering if you had any experience with was winter tyres. I used to have two sets of wheels for an old X5 I had and loved the difference in grip in the winter (we like going to the Alps for winter sometimes where it really helps). I was thinking of either getting two sets of steel wheels or sticking with the 20" HSE set wheels (with off road tyres) for summer use and maybe getting a set of the 18" steelies for winter use but I haven't been able to find any options for winter spec off road tyres. The only ones I've found for the 18" are Michelin Pilot ones but they're not off road. I did find some from a Chinese brand that I can't remember now that looked like off road winter tyres but they weren't in stock anywhere in the UK. Or do you think the Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure tyres, which I think are "all season" might actually work fine as proper winter tyres and I'm complicating things for no reason!
The 18" wheels actually seem to have larger tyres than the 20" wheels in terms of rolling radius ( they are very close to the wheel arches when turning ). I think I have found the settings in the CCF file to change the rolling radius but I dont think I am supposed to be messing around with CCF files ! I have used the goodyear wrangler in summer and winter now and they seem a really good all round tyre to me !
Hey there, have you considered raising the ride height using the ride hieght sensor link replacement option? If not why not and if so what were the cons and pros? cheers
Hi, Simon appreciate for interesting contents! Could you share which TPMS you used? Could you just take the tpms from alloy rim to steel rim or other solution? Thank you very much!

The parts system is showing part number LR070840 for the sensors EACH + VAT ! use the part number to find cheaper - i think US / UK may have different frequency but it does not show this on the parts system ( all parts are 433 Mhz which is UK for sure )

Hi Simon. Do you expect the new tyres to be any good on slippery surfaces such as snow over the winter? Some say OK but some say no. Don’t think they have the mountain snowflake symbol on them, just M+S. Shame some LR M+S marked tyres are rubbish in even a little snow, so not sure. The blocks and sipes do look better than some that LR fit, though. I don’t have the choice of 2 sets of tyres like you do.
I think wheels are one area LR haven't got quite right, The best looking and suited steel rims are off the options as soon as you pick all but basic spec.

Hello Simon, i’ve ordered 3.0l diesel defender and now i’m looking for winter tyres. Unfortunately there are no choice in stock size (255/60r20). What do you think about 275/55? They have almost the same height, but 1cm wider - will it fit? What do you think?
How many TPMS valves does the system monitor? I was wondering if the car can monitor trailer wheels and a spare on the roof? And what do you have to do to inform the system which corner a wheel is fitted?
Hi there are 4 sensors in the system - it does not measure the spare wheel pressure according to the handbook The system detects the location of the wheels so you can swap them around and it will notice the change - clever stuff www.dropbox.com/s/gxhav5fkp03xnn6/defender%20TPMS.JPG?dl=0
@@L663 Simon do you know the part umber for the tpms ? can i get some from used vehicle and will they work or do they require programming at least once?
I think we just found out why JLR only offers the steel wheelies on the smaller engines. The bigger petrol I6 has those bigger brakes that don’t fit the steel 18’s. Gotta be able to stop that extra HP.
Simon, get a set of arches. They'll look great with the steel wheels and make the Landy look less like a van. Or better still, get a set 3d printed to your own spec (can that be done , are there size restrictions on what you can have printed ?). Good question....and not a bad idea... but .. 1_ its quite big and this adds to the cost and time on the 3D printer. 2_i dont like the design much - its a bit lorry like for me. 3_I wanted to add the badge
I’m surprised Wrington engineering haven’t added these wheel nuts to their range, they do stainless wheel nuts/bolts for most Land Rovers and many other cars.
Pretty sure you could easily find small hubcaps to just fit the hole in the wheel. Massive selection on eBay. £12 a wheel nut is taking the pee, because they cost LR only the trade price [not the retail £2 you paid] for the non' genuine German brand ones. Probably less than £1 each.
Any idea of 18” rims for offroad use that work with a range rover sport l320 3.6tdv8 with brembo brakes? Never found a set that I could use. Either the offset is wrong or the diameter is way too small for my brembo brakes.
Great video. I am disappointed with LR that they do not offer the 18” wheels with the larger 6-cylinder engine. Very disappointed. It just seems that the Defender is supposed to be this Off-road king, but then you cannot even spec it with proper 18” wheels...what? Why does the larger engine require larger brakes? The size of the brakes should be determined by the weight of the vehicle, not how powerful the engine is. I understand that the larger engine is going to weigh a little bit more than the smaller engine but come on. A Toyota 4-runner comes with 18” wheels thankfully, and it weighs nearly the same as a Defender. Come on Land Rover...get with it.
Yes, it is disappointing, but as far as I'm aware the reason the 6-cylinder version has bigger brakes is to have a heavier towing rating, witch necessitates bigger brakes.
@@L663 I just went through the build configuration and they do offer the HSE with 19 inch wheel. So I would say yes. You would have to buy 5 as the spare would need changing too. Hope that helps.

Perhaps there should be an aftermarket option *hint hint* for the guys with the larger brakes. Most people would be buying the larger diesel or petrol engine variant so wouldn’t be able to buy the oem steel wheels.
Correct. Some of the uk first editions which had 22" spec have frecking huge front and rear brake upgrades, but this is no longer done according to JLR. The bigger petrols also have bigger brakes.
Spelled “tires” wrong bro, tho . Great vid! My 18” white Steelies are on order from the UK. Not sure how long I’ll be waiting. Cant wait to drop my 22s!
Informative video. Good job explaining everything. I do not care for the black wheels. Your black wheels, like all black wheels, look like the hubcaps fell off.
One thing I can’t understand with LR is why they handicap themselves so badly with wheels too large and tyres too small after spending hundreds of millions is developing amazing off road vehicles which limit is specifically due to wheel tyre choice.
Very interesting but my goodness that's a very complicated and expensive way of getting 18 inch wheels on your defender when you could just buy one with the steel wheels as standard
Yes but my car came with 20" alloys - which are not great for off roading - I think i will end up with 2 sets of wheels one for touring and one for winter / offroading.
powerfulukltd and you are clearly very technically minded, which I am not. I do enjoy watching your stuff I just think it's way beyond me. Especially doing things like re programming the car because the new wheels will rotate slightly more
I dont see the logic of this... the car . gearbox has no idea how big the wheels are...as long as they are all the same size...I just cannot see the logic in your statement.
Your camera keeps going out of focus because you're going inside the focal length of the lens when you try to get close. Keep it at least 20-30cm away from the object to keep it in focus.
There are various tyre size calculators online, which suggest that the circumference of 18" (255/70/R18) and 20" (255/60/R20) is negligible: www.willtheyfit.com/index.php?width=255&aspect=70&diameter=18&wheelwidth=8&offset=43&width2=255&aspect2=60&wheel_size=20&wheel_width=8&offset2=43 So you shouldn't have to recalibrate anything.
Thanks for the link, my old site that did offset, strut clearance etc was taken down. Just a point though, I compared a 235/70 (existing) to a 245/70 (new) with everything else the same - the calculator said the existing has a larger diameter and circumference than the new. Clearly not the case, 70% of 245 will always be larger than 70% of 235. Am I missing something?
The way he mesures it is correct when trying to mount unlisted tyres. You are talking about the legal offset of the rim which should match the one listed in the type reception of the car.
I am flattered that you only spotted I am an amateur by the camera focus - I thought the whole content from the way I am dressed to what i am saying would have given the game away a lot sooner !

I believe the 6 cylinder version has bigger brakes and require the bigger wheels. I don't think I would use those black ones. Don't like the idea of less metal holding my wheels on. Probably OK when new but after 100k of stress?
I guess you are referring to the black nuts.... yes not a fan of those
A nut has 100% strength at 3 full turns. So at the thin part the treads are not doing anything.
Shame the mounted a clip weight when they balanced the tires. Hope that didn’t scratch your wheel.
Do you think the Defender 18“ steel rims could fit on a Disco 4 SDV6?
Yes in theory depending on the brake setup - i have fitted the larger brakes to mine so i cannot check for you ... sorry
You beat me to that question, I fancy a set of those on my 2015 MY D4 SDV6 SE tech.
Why not 3D print a cover like the LR original one which covers the nuts and the centre hub?
Great work.
Any idea of 18” rims for offroad use that work with a range rover sport l320 3.6tdv8 with brembo brakes? Never found a set that I could use. Either the offset is wrong or the diameter is way too small for my brembo brakes.
Terrafirma Steelies!
Got one of the orange g4 disco's
Here is a thought. Would you consider manufacturing and selling 20 inch steel rims? I will buy a set. Thx
This is interesting and something i am considering.... do you think 19" will go on the big brakes or does it need to be 20" ?
@@L663 I just went through the build configuration and they do offer the HSE with 19 inch wheel. So I would say yes. You would have to buy 5 as the spare would need changing too. Hope that helps.
@@channadevassgunawardena4162 Thanks - and good idea - the next question is are there a wide choice of off road tyres in 19" ?
@@L663 I know Good year Wranglers is one, then there is one from Micheliln. In the US, there are plenty around. The LR Defender model builder offers teh Good Year Wrangler off road tires for teh 19 inch wheel.
Hi. Pretty nice tutorial videos! Do you know where i can buy these exact same black steel wheels? You said eBay! Any supplier name? If not, what have you written on eBay search engine? Cheers
I was told that if you have the larger brake setup you cant fit the steels - is this not the case?
I think that is the case but these are the smaller brakes on this model.
Thanks Andrew - yes i have the smaller brakes on the 2.0L Petrol
Spelling was never my strong point....really struggled at school with this stuff but some how managed to get a degree !
@@L663 Don't worry about it because you spelt 'Tyres' correctly for the English version of English!
Wheely good video 👍
(I’m get my coat)
I am TYRED of your jokes Alan... even though you are a STUD i worry your going NUTS ! you need to TREAD more carefully !
Would be nice to see a BF Goodrich solution
all terrain K02
Yes getting a lot of people suggesting these
Anything above 2.0 l8tr engine cannot have 18" wheels due to disc and caliper size
Informative video. Good job explaining everything. I do not care for the black wheels. Your black wheels, like all black wheels, look like the hubcaps fell off.
We have our 3D printed wheel covers coming soon !
One thing I can’t understand with LR is why they handicap themselves so badly with wheels too large and tyres too small after spending hundreds of millions is developing amazing off road vehicles which limit is specifically due to wheel tyre choice.
You have great vídeos but you should use a good microphone on you. The áudio would be Just awesome. All the best from Portugal
I have the new camera DJI Pocket 2 with wireless mic !
@@L663 Alright! That´s the way. Continue the awesome work!
You could always tap the centre. The drive shaft and put a screw through the centre of the wheel trim and a dot of thread lock
At 10 pound a nut, you will have to put a lock on them against theft.
will you lift it
sure will - at the press of a button !
Especially doing things like re programming the car because the new wheels will rotate slightly more
you can only go up/down 1'' from stock otherwise you will destroy the gear box !
Hi - thanks for the tips ... we are getting better with the new camera
There are various tyre size calculators online, which suggest that the circumference of 18" (255/70/R18) and 20" (255/60/R20) is negligible:
www.willtheyfit.com/index.php?width=255&aspect=70&diameter=18&wheelwidth=8&offset=43&width2=255&aspect2=60&wheel_size=20&wheel_width=8&offset2=43
So you shouldn't have to recalibrate anything.
Looked like a significant difference to me when they were next to each other ? let me double check
Interesting thanks
Offset should be measured to the edge of the rim not the tyre. Excellent video though :)
The way he mesures it is correct when trying to mount unlisted tyres. You are talking about the legal offset of the rim which should match the one listed in the type reception of the car.
Offset is measured from the centreline too. But by doing it Simon’s way you know if you will foul inboard bits.
GARRY CAN HOLDER!
Oh yes... Gerry graphic to be laser cut into it !
Their price for wheel nuts is robbery. When you think that the Land Rover is full of nuts and bolts, it begins to explain the final price.
Is anyone selling the 18-inch steel whites?
Mine are on order from Land Rover. In Florida, USA so I am waiting for delivery.
I can add them to the website - they aew £233 each + VAT
@@mannkeitha How much did JLR charge?
@@ChristianThunder $2086.50 for 5 wheels. Still waiting on and arrival date
@@L663 That would be great
Interesting video. Unfortunately the Cameraman is an Amateur. The focus is always off.
I am flattered that you only spotted I am an amateur by the camera focus - I thought the whole content from the way I am dressed to what i am saying would have given the game away a lot sooner !
They will only put bigger wheels on ,just to keep up with our real Defenders LOL
See you at the next off road day.... you can drive THE STIG if you like.... then let me know your thoughts..
