    We disassemble and re-assemble the pony motor (Donkey start) starter pinion. Dad finishes up the rebuild with a safety wire tutorial. Overall, progress continues on the 1939 Cat D4 / RD4 agricultural crawler with a D4400 diesel engine. 4G9986 "Lil Lefty" has never been so much fun and fulfilling. I hope you enjoy the shop talk, banter and commentary.
    We are operators pretending to be mechanics!
    Thanks for watching!
    Regards,
    Aaron & Greg "The cleaner"

    Great lesson on wire tying the bolts! I've always had the aviation guys tell me in my comments section that I was doing all my safety wire wrong, but not a single one of them has ever told me HOW to properly do it - big props to The Cleaner for showing us the methods - and all in one single take too! 👌👍😎

    The bearings in the bendix are high radial load bearings and are very expensive! Good to reuse the old ones if possible.

    Excellent thumbnail choice. Lot more complicated than the Belarus tractor starter pinion assembly. However the way they are supposed to work is identical. I like how the cleaner showed us how to safety wire the bolts.

      It's funny about the thumbnail because I just set it on top of my red toolbox. I pulled a frame out of the video an auto edited it. It really popped with the red background. Dad actually loves his safety wire. 😊

    No one ever told me about twists per inch. I broke more wire trying to safety wire applications on AF fuel trucks.

    Pretty good safety! I spent over30 years as an aircraft mechanic and inspector and I can assure you that I've seen MUCH worse. My favorite safety wire pliers are the 6 inch Snap-Ons. The wire size is 0.020" or 0.032" or 0.045". Most of the applications use the 0.032" I'm truly enjoying your videos!

      Me too. My “red pen” was a pair of side cutters. I’d just cut it and tell them to do it again.

    Safety wire became in existence way before lock nuts. It has then basically only used in aircraft.

    I have to hand it to the two of you and the reason I say that is because that was a really intimidating part to work on and you guys just dived into it like you had no fear! And I am with the Cleaner grease is # 01 with me hands down and I know I have already told you this but Lubriplate makes quality lubricant but I have had really good luck with PB Blaster as well but I also wanted to ask where did The Cleaner buy the special pliers for twisting the safety wire?😀🇨🇦

      @lifeafterourloss  6 месяцев назад +2

      Thanks Keith! Not sure where he got the pliers. He gave me that set years ago. For the size wire we were worming with her said smaller pliers would be better. Looks like there are many sources for the pliers online. You can search aircraft safety wire pliers.👍

    That locking arm puller is pretty slick. It looks like it uses the leverage from the cone to add clamping pressure to the arms. Ace hardware doesn't have that puller in their store, lol.

      I looked for a part number and couldn't find it. I know I got it at Napa about 20 years ago. It works really well with an adapter to pull out the master link plugs too.

    I worked in a shop that remanufactured EMD s everything was wire tied I would watch are mechanic s wire tie bolts but I never understood there was a method to there madness I just thought if bolt broke it kept it from falling in the gears
