When I saw the movie as a kid I could realize it was a sad moment but it didn't move me too much. Now as an adult, Randy Quaid's delivery of that line destroys me every time.😢
A lot of people have said that the missile not working was bad writing just to boost up the tension of the moment, but what most people don't recall is that when he first got into the jet, he played around with the launch system and the missile almost went off and he panicked, pressing a bunch of random sht, which turned off the count down. This was what later came back to bite him in the a$s because by doing this, he made the system lock the missile in what is probably a safety measure in place. When he tried to launch the missile the second time, the system short circuited itself causing the clamps to become physically locked which would not allow the system to fire on command. In short, it wasn't lazy writing, it was actually written in earlier.
Even if it wasn't that... missiles can malfunction. Even Tom Clancy had that happen once or twice in his novels, and in his books the military was damn near perfect (as opposed to people like Richard Marcinko and his stories, where Murphy's Law would kick in all the time and they'd succeed despite the issues rather than not have them at all).
Being a dad of 3, i always get teary when he looks at the pictures of his kids. No hesitation in making that decision to save them. Something I believe I would do for them as well😢
Having the President call you Mr. Casse then wish you luck while calling you buddy is as great as recognition gets. Went out like a true badass. Russel is the GOAT!
In 2016's sequel, Russell and others are mentioned as Heroes when their names are etched in stone at National Memorial at the Capitol when it is rebuilt.
@johnandrews1025 you're not missing anything. That movie sucked ass. It should have been left alone! No sequel was even needed. Will Smith thankfully wanted no part of it and was written out! I'm surprised ANY of the original characters came back. It was a box office flop!
@foxboy72006 usually, if the public hates something, proves the statement "a person is smart..people are stupid". Shawshank was a flop at box office too. But, unfortunately in this case, I'd agree the plot, dialog and writing was bad. They should have hired JJ Abrams or other ST writers. Lol
"Hello boys, I'm back!" was improvised and not in the script; when the scene was shot originally with Russel showing up in his biplane with a missile strapped to it. The scene was re shot and the support scenes redone so that Russel isn't on a suicide mission, and we get to see him make the decision.
Ever since the 80s as a kid I've loved every role Randy Quad has had(especially National Lampoon Vacations & Quick Change)but always felt he deserves more . He's an awesome character actor and makes me sad the state he's been in.
One thing I've always loved about this scene, is the oh so subtle 4th wall break when the shot switches to an internal shot of Randy Quaid's F18 cockpit when he says the line "it's me Russel Case Sir!" and he actually salutes the camera. brilliant movie, still stacks up as a top class sci-fi action movie to this day, there was another little moment that almost broke my heart, after Russel decides to make the ultimate sacrifice, his son, who has called him Russel throughout the entire movie, calls him "Dad" for the first time. just as his dad is about to die, my own father passed away in 2015 and we watched this movie together back in the day and we kind of bonded over it because we both were sci-fi geeks and anytime I see this scene it always makes me think of him. RIP Dad, love you always, see you on the other side.
What people don’t understand is he was mocked and treated as a joke because they thought he was just some crazy guy who thought he got abducted by aliens. He ended up saving the day by making the ultimate sacrifice and using his plane as a banana in the aliens tailpipe.
Good job on putting this together. One of the best revenge and redemption arcs in cinema. Russell just because, people think someone is crazy, a alcoholic or down on their luck, doesnt mean they are worthless.
My thoughts when seeing this the first time in the theater and at that time being active duty military was, "He is about to be awarded the Medal of Honor for that. His children will have no problems getting ahead after this. Rightfully so. He died a hero. Also, I wonder how those hats for ass thought about him sacrificing himself for everyone after making fun of him?"
I didn't see Resurgence, but if Russell Case didn't have a goddamn National Holiday, statues in different parts of the country, and a mothefucking mention in the history books as the hero of the goddamn world, then nothing in that life is fair
In the original script, Russell made his kamikaze run with a missile tied to his crop duster after being rejected for pilot service. This was changed after being deemed too comical. The filmmakers also thought it was better to have Russell choose to sacrifice himself.
Its always the weird one, there was building fire in my town and who was the guy who saved 14 people , a local so called drunkard, dumb dumb, lowlife were his so called nicknames . He ran into the fire and started pulling folks out . After that nobody called him that
The extended edition of this movie does so much for Russel Case. Really shows more of his journey from alcoholic father who suffered severe trauma in war and from abduction, to a father willing to give up his life so that his children will survive.
In the original version, he flew his biplane into the alien ship. But they thought it was too hokey; so they refilmed those sequences so he was flying an F-18.
Plus it was mentioned on one of the airforce channels I watched his biplane wouldn't have actually been able to fly successfully at that height, so they decided to go more for believability than the comical biplane aspect. Great Movie!
As a kid, I used to think the aliens had some sort of targeting camera strapped to their primary weapon, so the last thing at least one of them saw was Dennis Quaid's smiling, laughing face. "Hey wait, isn't that ... Ohhhh shii-"

I hope Russell got a huge damn statue, saved the whole world, and is probably one of the only people to get revenge on aliens that abducted him....Nice
Absolutely one of the best parts of the movie……I also like the 4th of July speech from the president. I cheer and shout at the end of the speech to this day.
I've never seen Randy Quaid in anything that made me think of him as one of the great actors-but honestly? This scene should be on a short list of required viewing in every single acting masterclass or workshop. Watch this: Look at how his performance is framed. His body's strapped in and his hands are on the controls, so he can't physically emote. His entire face and head are covered by the flight gear and the mask, so he can't even use his face. All he has are his eyes. That's it. Now think about the reality of shooting this. It's a tight, tight closeup, so for the most part, he's looking directly into the lens of a big 35mm film camera (or the digital equivalent, though i think 1997 was too early for this to be a DV). There's no real movement happening; he's inside a prop cockpit, probably surrounded by green screens so they can put the sky in in post. He has no actors to bounce off of. This movie did an incredible job of landing a huge, huge cast of A-listers who would probably never have been available for the whole length of a film shoot at the same time. The film does a masterful job of hiding this through good scripting and direction. Bill Pulman is shot in s completely different location, and probably did all his scenes before or after Randy's involvement. And so that close-up on the photo of his family isn't even there for him to react to: that was an incidental shot probably picked up by a second unit director or AD. So this scene is nothing but an actor staring point blank into a glass lens with nothing but his eyes to work with. And through that you see his jubilation at fighting the aliens he TOLD people his whole life were real, and the relaxed attitude of a crazy man who's been vindicated as not crazy. It transitions into his old military training as soon as the missiles start firing-and where you really see it, where he really recovers his training and discipline, is the moment there's an unknown equipment malfunction. There's all-business triage of the situation, followed by the fear and panic that creeps in as he realizes the trouble, the uncertainty of searching for a solution, then the understanding of what has to be, the weighing of that sacrifice against the private citizen he's become, and the decision that has to be made with courage, selflessness and iron resolve. The "I'm Baaack!" line strikes me as a corny last line that's right in the tradition of 1990s action-movie catch phrases. It never worked for me. But in about 15 seconds before that line, you see maybe the most virtuosic exercise in emotive acting I've seen from anyone. I hope people remember this scene and think about just what a skilled actor it takes to pull this off, whether it's a big popcorn movie or not.
First time watching the movie in television, I synched with him on his final flight uttering the famous last words "hello boys! I'm baaack!", knowing full well he got back on the aliens all those years ago. Man, the goosebumps... The feels
David Arnold's score is part of what makes this movie so damn good. To quote one review I read, "Leave it to a Brit to come up with the most patriotic music I've ever heard."
This was probably my most favorite movie growing up. Didn't see it in theater, but we did have it on both vhs and DVD. I was obsessed with that scene that in a way, it's what shaped me to be who i am today and also a protector to my entire family
A lesser noticed moment: the second that they bring down all the shields with the virus, I always felt like the movie got so incredibly hopeful because the US fighters were getting obliterated, and then all of a sudden there are alien spaceships being shot down by Sidewinders and F-16's. It's an absolutely glorious moment honestly
When I saw it when it came out and all the people with me did two things. We said noooo when we it wouldn't fire. But when he said up your and I'm backkk!!! We just went NUTS!!!!!!
5:57 In response to her statement. Technically, he didn't. He saw the picture and he decided right then what he was going to have to do. No thinking. He knew. Makes her reaction more touching, honestly.
The odd thing I always thought about this film was everyone regarding him like a backwater crazy about alien abduction with the evidence of his story flying right above every major city on the planet. You'd think he'd have at least a modicum of credibility given the circumstances.... or that's just me.
I grew up on this movie! My favorite summer time movie ever! I kick off the Summer with it on Memorial Day Weekend and on the 4th of July weekend! It's a big tradition for me!
You could tell the people who would make the sacrifice like he did... They aren't the ones going "no don't do it". They are the ones who go, it must be done
Actually I kind of surprised people didn’t realize he was going to kamikaze it. I mean he’s a good dad and he loved his children who were IN the base they were about to destroy! He may have saved the world but at that moment he was a father protecting his kids in the only way he had left to him.
Funny thing though..... Because of Randy Quaid being kinda a whack job now days and at the time it was made... The sequel completely discard the fact that his character "Russell Case" existing..... Hell they focus more on the lack of Will Smith, or Jeff goldbloom, hell Liam Hemsworth gets more focus than the man who literally saved the world. Shit I would have taken a mild call back like that elderly general, have a slow pan to Russell Case picture being held by his Three kids or something. Have his son Miguel be a flight instructor for Liam Hemsworth and get killed. Something more than being completely ignored. That's like having a batman movie and completely ignoring Alfred pennyworth.
Everyone: but I can still be sad! No one's saying that the kid can't be. Considering that the kid is MASSIVELY EMBARRASSED BY RUSSEL it's a way of addressing the established situation
Film Brain did a great video on the difference between this, and the original ending with Casse having a missile strapped to his biplane. (People who were not aware of that, I can only say, I wish I was kidding.) Why does this work when the original failed with test audiences? I think what he said that I agree with the most is that the original was just a step too far, it took the audience out of the moment. Reiterate that the man flew in Vietnam and have him in a real fighter jet from today, that's still a stretch, but not as much of one. (Hey, we know of at LEAST one time that a Vietnam era aviator was able to handle a much more modern military plane in flight. Or at least nobody disputed Dubya's assertion that he took the stick for part of the flight out to that aircraft carrier. Now if he claimed he LANDED that plane I'd call BS. /aside)
"Tell my children I love them very much" .... 30yrs later and that still hits me in the feels.

Actually I kind of surprised people didn’t realize he was going to kamikaze it. I mean he’s a good dad and he loved his children who were IN the base they were about to destroy! He may have saved the world but at that moment he was a father protecting his kids in the only way he had left to him.
5:34 Irina is my favorite I love you so much girl ❤️💋❌️⭕️
The man that would inspire King Kitan of Gurren Lagann in my heart.
"The missile knows where it is because the missile is piloted by Russell Case."
Everyone: but I can still be sad!
No one's saying that the kid can't be. Considering that the kid is MASSIVELY EMBARRASSED BY RUSSEL it's a way of addressing the established situation
If you pay attention you can see that the explosion is the same one they used for the Empire State Building.
And it was amazing when i saw it in Metal Slug too.
A damn good movie
its what you would do for your world
Film Brain did a great video on the difference between this, and the original ending with Casse having a missile strapped to his biplane. /aside)
Attaboy
Russel Casse- lived a joke, died a hero.
1:07 EPIC
Aun me acuerdo esa parte me sorprendió, me dio mucha emoción
Yay
Am i the only one that noticed the first couple was NOT the media knights?
Everyone so emotional they forget his crazy ass f up the missile when he first got in the jet, thats y it jammed
