    I got these last week and I already have a few critiques that weren't addressed. 1) Seen a lot of people receiving damaged plates. I know they are working on changing the packaging, but worth calling out, 2) the pop pins protrude enough for your knuckles to pop them out mid set. Found this out incline pressing with 70's last night. 3) the balance is a little off with the slide bars. Love the product, but no one is addressing some of the draw backs

      Damaged materials is largely up to carrier handling too, unfortunately, which a manufacturer really can't feasibly counter. As long as they're willing to quickly send out replacement plates, I don't really see that as a huge issue.

      I get that there are some crappy delivery people out there and and these are one offs, but if you paid $1,300 for the 125lb set and waited 6 months for these, it's a tough pill to swallow.

      Can you elaborate on what you mean with the balance being of with the slide bars? As in like, the bars on both side shifting the weight to the other side respectively? Is that really noticeable with them being across from one another?

      I also love my iron masters. I’ve only had mine for a few weeks now, but they really are fantastic. They have a lower start weight, and with all the add on kits plus heavy handles can go up to 180lbs per dumbbell, which is insane. I’ve also found that changing the weights isn’t hard at all, nor is it hard to calculate the weight in practice (which is a complaint Coop had on the IronMaster review).
      Plus, they don’t make any noise at all when you’re lifting them which might just be my favorite part.
      Really, the only complaint I have about them is that setting them up for 10lbs is kind of annoying because the threaded part of the screw is long enough that either side will run into the other, so you have to set them up just so. As soon as you go up to 15lbs though, it’s no longer an issue.

  • @tae912

    I have Nuobell for over 4 years now. Nothing wrong with them. I knew I didn't need something over 80lbs anytime soon , esp realistically knowing I might go on-and-off on my workout routine cause of my work. They were not cheap, I actually considered them expensive for what it was but an investment purchase for my wellness. I didn't treat them like babies but I also did not drop my dumbbells cause I took time in commercial gyms when younger to how to properly deload heavier dumbbells after exercises like dumbbell press.
    That being said, IF you know you're the type of person that isn't reckless with their equipment, you don't need to spend over $1,000 on adjustable dumbbells esp if you are on the fence about it's pricing. Trust yourself that you know how to take care of your items and you'll still love the lower costing (but still expensive) ones like Nuobells. (Plus I personally prefer dumbbells without extra bars around the handle like the power brick and these pepin ones...)

    I picked up the Bowflex 552 (#52.5) adjustable dumbell set largely based off your review for $225 for a set. The Bowflex is great for the price! Though the size is a bit awkward for some lifts & the weight forces me to do higher reps or myosets for some lifts. I see growing out of these in a year & will likely pick up this set leaving the Bowflex for the wife & kids. Thanks for great reviews!

      I had the 90 pound Bowflex ones for years before getting my current set of Nuobells. At the time, they were really the only thing out there and did the job. The nibs that held the plates eventually wore down, but only after like a decade or more of heavy use. The Nuo and similar next gen adjustables do have a much more natural feel, but you can still do a lot with the classic Bowflexes for sure.

    I got mine a couple weeks ago. I've found that the ends of cradle have to be just right to keep the unused plates standing perfectly straight, or else you have to fidget around to get the plates to slide together as you set it down. It took me a few tries because there's a very slim margin between too tight and not tight enough. Too far to either side and it will not seat properly and jams up when you set the dumbbell back down.

    The drop test interests me, I was given a cheaper set of adjustable dumbbell's (not a bad name but comparatively speaking with yours, cheap) and one broke just trying to get it back in the for lack of a better term rack. My nephew tried to force them in and one broke, after you couldn't use a couple variances. I gorilla glued it and it's held up amazingly well (shout out to Gorilla glue) but yeah, needing to move up to a higher weight set, it's been on my mind (mine only goes to 55 and at 54 years old I finally invested in a bench, 55 won't cut it). Great vid, cheers.

    I got mine this week and have used them for a push and pull workout and these are my critiques:
    1) The ‘cage’ doesn’t allow you to get straps very tight.
    2) They have rolled on me during every workout. This wouldn’t be a problem except the cage pinches/traps my hands when placing them down.
    3) The pop pin slightly digs into my hands when doing chest press. It’s more of an annoyance. For reference my hand measures ~9 inches and I use XL gloves.
    4) The ‘adder’ weights pop pin scratches the weights. Scratch are already showing and I’ve only done two workouts with them.
    5) I don’t feel comfortable dropping these weights because I fear my hands will get trapped by the ‘cage’ breaking the bones in my hands/wrists.
    6) Two weight plates slipped off during use (chest press). I’m still trying to figure out how that happened but I bet it was user error and not because of faulty equipment.

    • @GarageGymReviews
      @GarageGymReviews  3 месяца назад +16

      Dang, haven’t ever had plates slip off. Hope that was just an accident on your part and not on the design. Shouldn’t happen unless the magnetic pin isn’t pressed in. Do agree with the straps portion. I use Versa grips and for rowing it takes some extra work, but can be done. - Coop

      The pop pin dug into my hand a little bit too when I did a chest press, but only on one side. Think I may be able to avoid if I just adjust the DB in my hand slightly before pressing, but we’ll see. As for the adder plates, I noticed the scratching too, so I just hold the key ring all the way out while re/moving it, and no problems.

    • @sscarbon
      @sscarbon 3 месяца назад +1

      @@MushookieManno the handles don’t rotate freely. Because the dumbbells are rounded when placing them on the ground after a set they often roll slightly. This isn’t a problem I’ve ever noticed with regular dumbbells because they don’t have the ‘cage’ that gets in the way…but when the Repins roll, the cage traps your hands.

    I recently went through life changes and had to sell my entire home gym set, super bummed but I probably spent near 10K on everything and almost every piece of equipment and adjustable dumbbells. When I saw the Pepins I wanted those it looked like the right blend of durability and quick changing and feel. What I had was a 50lb Powerblock Trainer Set and a Ironmaster Quicklock Set that goes up to 120lbs for the heavier sets. This combo worked best for me and I would go to this again or try the Pepins. Power locks are great for quickness and price point but get the metal ones not the plastic coated ones. Those will break over time. Ironmaster takes a long time to change but feel the best. For heavy sets nothing beats a solid ironmaster dumbbell. And one thing you have to note is when re-racking the dumbbell. Imagine doing sets of 90s or 100s then trying to carefully rack them in a rack, that’s tough. Versus just placing them on the stand with the ironmaster. If I ever move into a bigger place, 100% i will re-build my home gym

At first I thought it would be the worst! However, I found that over time I liked them more and actually got a better workout with them. I have no idea why other than maybe in some weird way it actually provided some sort of inertial stability.

    Thanks for the review, Coop! Really enjoyed it, as always. I got my Reppins this week, and I have to say they just don't compare to my Ironmasters, for several reasons:
    1. Durability. The instructions for the Reppins actually tell you not to drop them. I know they're built well, but if they're telling you not to drop them, what does that say? By comparison, Ironmaster says, "Go ahead and drop those motherf**kers. We don't care." And there ain't one bit of plastic anywhere to be found on an Ironmaster DB. Good luck trying to break them.
    2. Feel/solidity. I was surprised at how much noise the Reppins make when using them, especially when you're using the 2.5 lb adder weights. There's definitely more "play in the joints" than I expected. Plus, I don't particularly trust that those adder weights will be kept in place by the tiny pop pin when I'm lifting them over my head. By contrast, Ironmasters feel like one solid piece of granite when you're using them. No matter how quickly or violently you shake them around, there's no sound, no movement, no play in the joints. Just one solid weight, every time.
    3. Grip. The Ironmaster knurling is far superior. It's definitely more aggressive, but much grippier than the Reppins.
    4. Ease of weight change. This is clearly where the Reppins have an advantage, as they're obviously faster to change. But I've always felt this was an overrated criticism of the Ironmasters. Do you wait 60-90 seconds between sets? Then guess what - you have plenty of time to change the Ironmasters till your heart's content. And I generally don't change my DB weight once I lock in for three sets. If drop sets are your thing, then look at the Reppins. Otherwise, this really isn't an issue.
    5. Price. Ironmasters are cheaper. You can get the base set of 75lb, plus the heavy handle kit (which takes the total to 95lbs), for $850. So for $150 less than the Reppins, you get 10 more lbs of weight. And of course you can increase the Ironmasters from there. And, by the way, once you add the heavy handle kit, the Ironmasters are shorter than the Reppins for any identical weight.
    The Reppins are great - but in this one man's opinion, the Ironmasters simply can't be beat. Buy them once and own them for the rest of your life. You won't regret it.

      Ironmasters are fantastic. In fact, many pieces of equipment they make are just so much better thought through than others. If they can figure out a way to maintain the durability while getting rid of the cage aspect you'd basically have the perfect adjustable dumbbell!
    Snodes are supposedly durable enough and don't have a cage so I'm hopeful it'll be possible!
    Snode just need to get smaller weight increments (or something a little more elegant/integrated than their magnets) and a higher max weight and Rep needs to eliminate the cage. I wonder who will have the next version that eliminates the downsides!
    IIRC Snode said at some point they are working on a v2 so we'll see!

    •  3 месяца назад +1

      If they could have done this they would have done it without licensing the Pepin rail design. Heavy, durable, safe, quickly adjustable, and cage free is a lot to ask.

    • @GorgeousFortress
      @GorgeousFortress 3 месяца назад

      I would say Snode are quite as durable even at a lower weight, don't think the design would scale up to 120lb. Snode's also have a crazy amount of slack in the plates, especially the newer revisions of them.

    The one critique I have with the 2.5lb add-on plates, (same as with my Powerblocks), they leave you with a 5lb gap between having both micro-plates and the next increment up (10->12.5->15->20). If they used 3.3lb add-ons, you would have even gaps (10->13.3->16.6->20- etc.)
    Nice that with the more open cage, movements like goblet squats would work better than Powerblocks

    1k is a steep price, but on this one I have to say you're getting what you pay for. up to 85lbs, solid construction, very similar to normal weights, and pretty good change mechanic. Sure it's a bit over priced but not enough that I wouldn't say this is a good buy for someone limited in space that was looking to upgrade.

    I am planning on picking up a set of adjustable dumbbells by the end of the year and really wanted something that is just straight up durable and comfortable to use. I was torn between the ironmasters and these but then all of a sudden these had an 11% price increase out of nowhere. Even considering these was a stretch because they were already 28% more expensive than the ironmasters at the time but with the new price it brings them closer to 50% more expensive. The extra 10 lbs these would offer at that price tag is a non issue for me. A 1000 dollar dumbbell is certainly not for "the masses". They have some work to do on cost

    I have the Nuobells and have no complaints other than 80 pounds is pretty limiting for presses, but ok for lower weight accessories and things. Still a high quality product asI have used them a lot over the last few years and they perform like new. The extra weight here would be great to have for sure. The "cage" isn;t my favorite and makes me a little claustrophobic, TBH, but it's a good tradeoff for the extra pounds. I would be unlikely to ever have to drop the 80's but with 120's, it could happen potentially, so the extra durability is good. I would definitely consider these if I was in the market.
