@Andy Here's a version that works as a mouseover (no mouse click required) when you hit the keybind you put the macro on. I honestly dont know why I never thought about the "go into a dungeon, pull a group and practice tanking" thing, its such an insanely good idea. I always wanted to play a tank, I level 1-2 every expansion but due to being afraid to actually tank relevant stuff, never continue and just go back to my healing classes. Thank you for this very nice video, it helped me a lot!
I switched from healing to tanking in WOD. I understand the fear thing, just remember this tanking in itself is actually easier than healing. Just be honest with a group you're new everyone has to learn.
This is the best breakdown of a roles task, I've ever watched. To be honest it's one of my fav videos of any WoW-Conent, period. Its detailed, calm and steady explainations, not to much not to little and all the topics are relevant. I love how you focus on the player/role-aspect and not conclude that any kind of Specc is relevant for beeing good at tanking. I think thats the most critical pov, I hope lots of puggers are watching this video, I'd love this to have the result, that ppl understand that a "meta-tank" isnt relevant on a +20 or smth low like that. GG Mate!
Wow what a clear and comprehensive guide. Usually Im not one to post comments, but I simply had to with this quality video! I used to be a raid tank and always stayed clear of m+, but after watching this video, Im gonna give it another shot! Thanks!
WHAT. This is the best video to get started in 5-man tanking I've ever seen. Just that guide on learning from soloing and dying a lot, wow. My newbie tank wants to be you when she grows up. Thanks for a great guide!
Excellent video, agree with pretty much everything you have in here and this is an excellent guide for new players looking to get into tanking or even just those new to tanking. Was a couple of things I wanted to add: 9:05 agree with most of this but wanted to highlight that there ARE pulls you will want to LOS the pack back, make sure your group knows and use your aoe at a choke to tag them all before they reach the group. 10:03 when there are ranged adds generally there are two or more, grab the melee to one ranged caster mob and interrupt its cast and drag it and the melee mobs to another ranged. The interupt will lock their spell casting forcing them to follow you for a few sec and should be enough to get them to another ranged mob. 10:58 here you say to pull singular bosses and mini bosses with taunt. While you definitely want to taunt them as the dps start opening up you want to do the actual pull with an instant cast dmg ability and THEN taunt, this will give you initial threat, which taunt does not, and it will give you more time to build that threat under taunts forced aggro while dps are blowing their CDs. 16:19 Blizzards archaic threat and aggro system. Yes it is archaic, how ever it is how the game works and unfortunately it seems a lot of working knowledge of how that system works seems to have been lost. While I dont expect an avg player to understand threat it is of use to know some of these things: Taunting will force aggro to you for 3 seconds AND grant you an amount of threat equal to the threat of the mobs current aggro target. ( on pull this is 0 because it has no target ) -This allows "steal" healer threat or a trigger happy dps threat. It also means in a two tank scenario (raiding) that the tank losing aggro can easily steal aggro back leaving you in a bad situation and with your taunt on CD, both tanks need to understand this. Taking aggro happens at 110% threat for players in melee ranged and 130% for players at ranged. -This can cause a ranged player to INSTANTLY pull aggro if they enter melee or you drag mobs on top of them. hopefully this wasnt to much of a word salad, and once again this was a very well thought out and articulated video imo.
Going from tanking in classic to trying to tank in retail this video was pretty solid on so many levels. My man talks about so many things I’ve never heard someone mention.
I LOVE your first tip. For me that 'solo practice' experience was mage tower on my fresh guardian, and it was quite good to make myself familiar with defensive and utility toolkit, but it's still quite far away from a typical m+ environment, and I won't recommend tank mage tower for someone with 0 tanking experience. The solo exercise that you propose looks times and times more valuable than steamrolling that same +10/15 on a fresh alt with a group of 300 ilvl DPS when you can't even figure what's happening. When necrotic week is over, I'm definitely doing that exercise on my pally!
yes!! I would not be able to roll as many alts as I do without this exercise. The reason I began doing this is cuz my friend groups run keys at really odd times, so usually when I want to play a new alt they just want to get score. So I started doing this so that I can practice my new alts even if I'm the only one online, and then when we wanna push a key I can bring my suspiciously low item level alt that I'm now comfy playing. The junkyard in this clip as bear druid, I was around 239 item level at the time, was my first key as bear ever haha Really was a bad idea trying to do it on necrotic week tho, it was HARD. Got clever at kiting tho!
In the beginning of the expansion I was using Torghast for this and the great part is that I could scale based on level. And I have 1 of every tank spec albeit my drood is a healer.
Doing some last minute prep for DF launch. Just tested Automarker macro and it worked great! Great video to watch as I am a long-term WoW player (since Vanilla), however will be tanking for the first time as my main for any xpac. Main will be Prot Paly, alt will be Guardian Druid. Well done video!
I think this video just won me over to tanking again. I really like the warrior playstyle but tanking PUG's when coming back rusty from a break and facing toxic players is discouraging. However, now I think I will give it a go, thanks for an awesome video, you just got a sub!
Enjoyed this video... I feel like it did a better job putting into words a lot of the basics that have gotten difficult to explain, or maybe more specifically, easy to forget to mention, as they become more natural.
This is the best video to overcome your tanking anxiety, show actual solutions instead of jut going "play more to be better" and "ignore toxic players". Thank you for this, can't wait to dust off my beewmaster.
Happy to help friend, I think I'm gonna make a short one specifically on tanking anxiety. This season has been my first time 100% pugging and I think I've learned a lot to share about that specificially :D
as a old-as-fuck player that tanked since daoc in 2001 and just got back into wow after sitting out shadowlands for... the same reasons many people did... i have to say this is a great guide. most of it was well known to me personally (but great for new tanks) but some of the stuff even gave me new ideas and inspiration on how to go about tanking ( especially the auto marker code is much appreciated! ) cheers mate and keep going, great quality content, well edited and narrated, all in all just good stuff!
@@notSachy awesome! i love seeing younger players getting into mmo's. in the past 10 years mobas and shooters dominate most of the online gaming scene, so its great to see! have a great launch, gl hf!
Probably going to tank in Dragonflight. Did a bit of tanking before, but not in m+. Always seemed so scary, but your video removed that fear. Great guide!
Great video, my only problem with tanking is having to cope with the extra weight from the role that doesn't give any extra reward, it's an effort other roles simply don't need to care about so in my mind I'm always thinking "I really like tanking, but why should I spend my time and effort tanking m+ when I can just smash my head against the keyboard as a dps putting minimum effort and still get the same rewards"
I think it helps to hold your groups to higher standard, but not a higher standard than your own play. The end to the suffering is to keep adding good players as friends until eventually you have a small community of gamers to play with. Also when you start getting really good, even if you have to pug, you can pull like an absolute hooligan. Imo doing an extreme pull and surviving and topping meters is worth the payoff for the stress that comes with just tanking normally. Cuz at the end of the day, DPS overall is affected by a bad tank and a healer's entire experience is affected by bad-everyone, but as tank your entire performance is almost always in your total control - ofc people can body pull and miss boss mechanics and stuff but in 95% of situations you control your own dungeon and that freedom and power makes it well worth the pain.
@@notSachy Had a healer call me bad, dumb and kick me in LFR levelling just because I took the long way aroun a circle in azure vaults, with no mobs alive with 0 wipes. Can't take those guys seriously or else you'll lose your mind and stop tanking all together
You’re welcome! Working on a new video currently about pug tanking prep/tank anxiety! Pugged past 3000 score this season and learned a lot so stay tuned for that 😄
Love the idea of going in and pulling mobs in a dungeon! An extra tip from me -> Remove some of your gear to reduce your stats then you dont have to go into higher keys to get a challenge and kan spam m0!
Brilliant summary of all the psychological challenges a tank has to overcome. I always struggled to put all of this into words, being a tank main. Thank you, I think this video will help a lot of players trying to get into tanking. Very helpful and transparent.
Preach has by far the best guides in WOW. I just wish he updated his videos and not quit playing. Watch his videos first to get a good summary of a dps, healing and tanking and he also has an application game on which he plays the said role. Probably the best advice he has is it's not so much in ilvl but on proper mechanics.
For Lazy prot palas : download healbot Put shift + left click for lay of hands Shift + right click for blessing of protection And shift + mousewheel click for blessing of sacrifice. Have an eye on the heal bot window. If someone is about to die, insta lay of hands U can have normal click on the frame for word of glory aswell. Along as you keep your shield of the righteous up and you have holy power to spare , use the healing on ppl if dps isn't an issue
When I started tanking I did a couple of things that really helped, I started soloing more and more difficult dungeons to work on my survivability and to learn routes/pulls I started healing dungeons first to find out how everyone preferred to do them and then when I was familiar with them, I started tanking them. Doing some bgs as a tank can help you work on your mobility and survivability too. I also soloed a lot of dungeons at high level to learn them and then went back and ran them on a lower level character when I was levelling alts. Healing is pretty easy, you just follow 4 people around and in normal dungeons it's pretty easy to keep them alive unless they do stuff that's unreasonably dumb 🙂 back in BC I used to off spec heal all the time 😆
Great video, learned a thing or two :D However, if you're like me and you you hate having to click stuff (even if it's to place World Markers), you can tweak the Details! Auto-run code to allow the macro to behave like a [@cursor] conditional would: --auto cycle through worldmarkers local b=ActionButton8 _MH=_MH or(b:SetAttribute("*type5","macro")or SecureHandlerWrapScript(b,"PreClick",b,'Z=IsShiftKeyDown()and 0 or(Z or 0)%8+1 self:SetAttribute("macrotext5","/wm [nomod,@cursor]"..Z)'))or 1
the solo practice thing is kinda similar to how I learned to tank better. When i started tanking in cata, I also started to try soloing old content. stuff from old expansions, and early current xpac content. doing that helped me figure out how to tank better i think. One thing I know for sure forced me to get better was the brawler's guild. especially the super hexagon eye boss. That was what got me to finally stop clicking my abilities manually and focus more on what's happening around me
Go talk to the keystone trader next to the vault! If you have ever done a key this expansion he’ll give you at least a +2. Not much but it’s somewhere to start!
I wish there was a drill like this for healers. Maybe something goofy can be cobbled up with follower dungeons and going in with quest gear or something
Being dependent on big cooldowns was what I struggled with. I noticed woth alot of the higher end tanks on twitch they will sometimes forget they even had those cds to use because they dont rely on them so heavily.
It’s in the pinned comment. Description is nearing character limit but I’ll try to condense stuff and fit it in 😅 EDIT: characters in the code aren't allowed in youtube descriptions, such as angled brackets
Ive pvped my entire life and got to 2400 in arenas, PvP on wow has gotten so dull and boring now with no content that I just threw in the towel and decided to main PvE and play tank, Lvling a Blood DK planning to tank mythic + and Raids, Great video!
I unfortunately don't use this UI anymore, However this exact everything is available from twitch.tv/atrocity, I believe it's a subscriber perk but its been a minute so im not too sure
I always liked tanking but I just kinda went blind into all runs and if I lived, well lucky me I guess Nice guide though, will prolly use it if I end up going back to WoW
I did my first normal dragonflight (tanking since BC dropped but still). As warrior. Always my best. I love all tanking though. Current favorite is Monk due to being able to survive a lot at under 60. Prot pally is insanely simple to 60 to me. With bear up to 60 i died once by pulling elite packs solo. About 15 gold elites. I always check auction house now. I don't want item level 98 boots when I am level 55 put a lot of the time I find myself with any problems surviving it's always because my gear is terrible
Very nice vid had no idea about that first tip might be a good way to learn my alt tanks in DF. However though please stop A-D strafing as tank you damn meleebrain! Also had no idea you could reset Oshir like that damn thats nice.
If you think the A-D strafing is bad wait until you notice how much I spam jump 👀 whenever I’m doing that it’s cuz I’m bored and comfortable. Going into a dungeon or boss for the first I’ll be super planted with no fidgeting.
Hey, since tomorrow is prepatch I think my entire UI is gonna get bricked so I’ll share one here in a few days after all the addons are updated and everything is working again 😄
Hi, I'm trying to do this details hotkey ground marker stuff and I'm having a couple issues. I followed the code in the comments that is pinned and I got the function working, however it only marks with X for me. My very first use of it worked for them all until it got to X, and now it only marks X for me. It also doesn't clear out my markers. Once I manually clear all my markers, it continues to only mark X still. I'm also unsure of how to change the hotkey for the option. I have an idea but I'm afraid I'll break this code more than it is for me already lol. This is an excellent idea and a tool and I would love to get it working with your help. Thanks! Edit: I logged out hoping it would fix the tool but it doesn't work after simply relogging lol.
do things like dancing rune weapon have less than 1min cd since it reduces to below that point or for the purposes of the exercise is it things that have a base cd of less than 1min?
Yep! the purpose of the 1min CD breakpoint is that you just want to use things that are up roughly every pull. So if it’s up every pull can go ahead and use it for this exercise.
Hey thanks for the great video! I am trying to get the auto marker code to work, but it doesn't let me. I used the same method as shown in the video. Any other tips?
What tank is the best at pulling multiple Enemies towards Themselves and keeping Them focused on Themselves? In my eyes a true tank is selfless being a shield for Their Allies having the Enemies focused on attacking Them and taking on the pain and punishment so Their Allies don't get hurt and I want the tank that best reflects that.
Hey! I was wondering how you get theese edge around your Details rectangle? I dont want to see the option above my details but i cant find where to remove them and just have the black border around it
Hey! It's actually not a details setting at all. Elvui has a black rectangle they put behind the right chat box, my details windows are just over that, with all the details window backgrounds/alpha/textures turned off
I like to tank but not a big fan of all the research. I used to use Monk but no good at it anymore since the changes. DH and Bear are decent but I was thinking warrior. I like those 3 because of the DPS aspect as well. Just not sure. Advice?
A year later and still helpful, saying any tank can do all content is huge since most (not all) of the super high end m+ runners will stand by the top of the top tiers Now I might actually start trying to run keys lmfao
in this video i was using Atrocity UI, which is a sub perk of twitch.tv/atrocity. currently I'm using a similar package but from twitch.tv/Naowh. they are both great

Then just forget them and go next ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@notSachy Had a healer call me bad, dumb and kick me in LFR levelling just because I took the long way aroun a circle in azure vaults, with no mobs alive with 0 wipes. Can't take those guys seriously or else you'll lose your mind and stop tanking all together
That practice tip is GOLD. Thank you so much.
You’re welcome! Working on a new video currently about pug tanking prep/tank anxiety! Pugged past 3000 score this season and learned a lot so stay tuned for that 😄
@@notSachy fantastic. I am 454 item level and don't dare to do a +3 xD
Hi friend, video is up btw :D
This is by far the Best video to explain tanks in wow.
wow ty!
This video was the incentive I needed to lose my fear of tanking. Thanks!
Love the idea of going in and pulling mobs in a dungeon!
An extra tip from me -> Remove some of your gear to reduce your stats then you dont have to go into higher keys to get a challenge and kan spam m0!
Just discovered this channel. Good shit - thanks for sharing.
Brilliant summary of all the psychological challenges a tank has to overcome. I always struggled to put all of this into words, being a tank main.
Thank you, I think this video will help a lot of players trying to get into tanking. Very helpful and transparent.
Yea this video took a LOT of redoing and rewriting to get to this result, glad you liked it!
This video is gold!
TY
I'm looking to get into tanking (always been 'just'
a healer, :P) This is an excellent video to get me started. Thank you! :)
Thanks for the solid vid! Will definitely check out the weak aura packages
I'm a new player and want to get into tanking but really I'm afraid of messing up on heroic dungeons, this was quite the boost in condifence
Great tips, thank you so much
That was a fantastic video!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it :-)
For Lazy prot palas : download healbot
Put shift + left click for lay of hands
Shift + right click for blessing of protection
And shift + mousewheel click for blessing of sacrifice.
Have an eye on the heal bot window. If someone is about to die, insta lay of hands
U can have normal click on the frame for word of glory aswell.
Along as you keep your shield of the righteous up and you have holy power to spare , use the healing on ppl if dps isn't an issue
Great advice! I do the same but with the built-in click casting feature they added recently I previously used Clique
Healing is pretty easy, you just follow 4 people around and in normal dungeons it's pretty easy to keep them alive unless they do stuff that's unreasonably dumb 🙂 back in BC I used to off spec heal all the time 😆
Great video, learned a thing or two :D
However, if you're like me and you you hate having to click stuff (even if it's to place World Markers), you can tweak the Details! Auto-run code to allow the macro to behave like a [@cursor] conditional would:
--auto cycle through worldmarkers
local b=ActionButton8 _MH=_MH or(b:SetAttribute("*type5","macro")or SecureHandlerWrapScript(b,"PreClick",b,'Z=IsShiftKeyDown()and 0 or(Z or 0)%8+1 self:SetAttribute("macrotext5","/wm [nomod,@cursor]"..Z)'))or 1
10/10 vid. Thanks
No problemo!
Great video! You seem to have a strong sense of ownership. Must come from all the tanking.
Fantastic video brother. I learned a lot. Ez sub
Cheers, ty!
Thanks man. You're president of tank nation.
the solo practice thing is kinda similar to how I learned to tank better. When i started tanking in cata, I also started to try soloing old content. stuff from old expansions, and early current xpac content. doing that helped me figure out how to tank better i think.
One thing I know for sure forced me to get better was the brawler's guild. especially the super hexagon eye boss. That was what got me to finally stop clicking my abilities manually and focus more on what's happening around me
Brilliant video! Thx!
Glad you liked it!
Actually solid first tip. I've never heard that before, I'm kinda tempted to do that, but would need to find a key first!
Go talk to the keystone trader next to the vault! If you have ever done a key this expansion he’ll give you at least a +2. Not much but it’s somewhere to start!
S+ grade content. Just started tanking and this helped so much
I wish there was a drill like this for healers. Maybe something goofy can be cobbled up with follower dungeons and going in with quest gear or something
nice quick guide, especially the last part of toxic ppl in m+ is so true and very well spoken!! keep up te good work id say
Good stuff!
First time watching. Not bad. Very good video on the basics.
Amazing job !!! Thank you !!!
Thank you too!
Being dependent on big cooldowns was what I struggled with. I noticed woth alot of the higher end tanks on twitch they will sometimes forget they even had those cds to use because they dont rely on them so heavily.
We did that in 08, especially tanks, because we had no way to force casters to move to us. Unless you had a couple people with a silence.
great guide thank u
I think you forgot to add the code for the worldmarkers in the description but good video
It’s in the pinned comment. Description is nearing character limit but I’ll try to condense stuff and fit it in 😅
EDIT: characters in the code aren't allowed in youtube descriptions, such as angled brackets
Ive pvped my entire life and got to 2400 in arenas, PvP on wow has gotten so dull and boring now with no content that I just threw in the towel and decided to main PvE and play tank, Lvling a Blood DK planning to tank mythic + and Raids, Great video!
I dont get the world target macro what am i missing?
IVIV can you share the exact UI profiles you are using in this video? they look incredibly clean
I unfortunately don't use this UI anymore, However this exact everything is available from twitch.tv/atrocity, I believe it's a subscriber perk but its been a minute so im not too sure
I always liked tanking but I just kinda went blind into all runs and if I lived, well lucky me I guess
Nice guide though, will prolly use it if I end up going back to WoW
Thanks!
No problem!
Hi! Do you have a link to your UI?! I’ve never seen something that clean!!!
love this vid, i wanna tank in df but kinda scared cuz of past failures in sl, could u maybe make a warrior tank guide?
My plan is to publish videos for every tank and every healer in dragonflight, I don’t think it’d be worth doing now for shadowlands - a bit late lol
Torghast is a good place to START learning some basic things for your tank. And gather resources at the same time.
This is great as well, especially m+ diversity of pull sizes and damage types I love this one!
I LOVED tanking in Legion and BFA. After that, no tanking for me.
Did the Details! script not work as seen here for anyone else?
I did my first normal dragonflight (tanking since BC dropped but still). As warrior. Always my best. I love all tanking though. Current favorite is Monk due to being able to survive a lot at under 60. Prot pally is insanely simple to 60 to me.
With bear up to 60 i died once by pulling elite packs solo. About 15 gold elites.
I always check auction house now. I don't want item level 98 boots when I am level 55 put a lot of the time I find myself with any problems surviving it's always because my gear is terrible
Zephyrindark is a prot paladin tanking 20, without a healer 4 dps
Can you also unequip gear instead of playing with dungeon diff?
Don't worry if you fuck up a key too guys. It will happen.
what is that tombstone skull shield ur wearing on the tauren dk? looks kool af
It’s from torghast! The vendor sells it at the end for phantasma sometimes, actually a cloak transmog 😄
@@notSachy guess I'm going there lmao yikes
If it makes you feel better it’s rng so you might have to do it multiple times 💀
Going into a dungeon or boss for the first I’ll be super planted with no fidgeting.
hi mate, where is this auto marker code ?? cant seem to locate and is a game changer thru details. btw amazing vid - well put together , TIA
Hey! it's in the pinned comment, you can't put certain characters like angled brackets in youtube descriptions
Guess im handicapped. I cant get it to work, if i want it on F6 do i replace ActionButton8 with F6?
Can u share your Plater profile? Tried the one u linked but in video your looks more clean :)
Great video, thank you!
Hey, since tomorrow is prepatch I think my entire UI is gonna get bricked so I’ll share one here in a few days after all the addons are updated and everything is working again 😄
@@notSachy Sounds great! Thank you :)
Any profile to share? :)
dont forget to update list for season 1!
done!
Hey! Couldd you share your UI? Thanks alot!
I might be missing something but I can't get the macro to work
Does it really matter since no matter what dps will pull
do things like dancing rune weapon have less than 1min cd since it reduces to below that point or for the purposes of the exercise is it things that have a base cd of less than 1min?
Yep! the purpose of the 1min CD breakpoint is that you just want to use things that are up roughly every pull. So if it’s up every pull can go ahead and use it for this exercise.
Hey thanks for the great video! I am trying to get the auto marker code to work, but it doesn't let me. I used the same method as shown in the video. Any other tips?
The code in the pinned comment works, make sure you’re in a group when you’re testing it, can’t place markers without being in a group 😄
@@notSachy Ah right, that must be it! Thanks for the quick reply
Thanks a lot for the hard work you´ve done. It is extremly helpful¡¡¡ Thanks again¡¡. /clap
You're very welcome!
Been pondering this for a while trying to think of the best answer. Current prot paladin is what you're looking for :D
Hey! I was wondering how you get theese edge around your Details rectangle? I dont want to see the option above my details but i cant find where to remove them and just have the black border around it
Hey! It's actually not a details setting at all. Elvui has a black rectangle they put behind the right chat box, my details windows are just over that, with all the details window backgrounds/alpha/textures turned off
thank you very much!
I like to tank but not a big fan of all the research. I used to use Monk but no good at it anymore since the changes. DH and Bear are decent but I was thinking warrior. I like those 3 because of the DPS aspect as well. Just not sure. Advice?
Warrior is turbo strong on prepatch, but I’d try Vengeance again if I were you. If you haven’t played it since the new talents dropped it’s VERY fun
idk anything about new prot pala, and blood dk has also had some positive changes that feel very fun to me
A year later and still helpful, saying any tank can do all content is huge since most (not all) of the super high end m+ runners will stand by the top of the top tiers
Now I might actually start trying to run keys lmfao
Glad it’s still giving value so much later on, you might also like my new video like this 😄 a bit modernized and more nicely presented imo
What is your UI that you use?
in this video i was using Atrocity UI, which is a sub perk of twitch.tv/atrocity.
currently I'm using a similar package but from twitch.tv/Naowh.
they are both great
nice!
Thank you, I knew nothing, now I'm 🧠
