But IRL, a highly entertaining speech like this would get nothing more from me than a lot of smirks and amusement.
Every person that will be voting this year needs to watch this clip. Several times. And then be honest enough with themselves to ask: "Does my candidate fit the 'Bob Rumson' comments?" The movie may be twenty-one years old, but it was never more of a dead-on, bulls-eye than the 2016 primaries. Wake up people and stop letting these clowns "make you afraid" and "telling you who you need to blame." We all deserve better!

I always wished we had a president like THIS one.... or even President Bartlet in the West Wing. Compared to how presidents are portrayed by Aaron Sorkin, we have absolute crap presidents. lol
Fictional presidents don't have to do anything but give good speeches and or kill bad guys. Real presidents have to at least do what the people want, even though the people have varying ideas of what that is. They have to convince others to do things that go against there better interests
How refreshing would a presidential campaign be if it was similar to Arney Vinnick (Alan Alda) and Matt Santos (Jimi Smits) in last season of West Wing.
Our President has to lead not only America, but also lead the world. Lying, whining, crying, is not a leader. America has always been great. @@trekkienzl2862 right...The republicans were fear mongering against the rude minorities. You swallowed the kool-Aid. And your comment about trying to stop African Americans from voting by demanding ID’s is probably the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. I ran a youth center where 13 year olds were smart enough to get ID’s but you are saying blacks aren’t? That’s racist. And who do your beloved democrats fear monger against? Easy: Legal Gun Owners, those who support free speech, those who support freedom of religion, blacks who don’t support the democrat party. Oh, let’s not forget the war on women by allowing biological men to compete in their sports. I could go on and on. Basically, anyone who doesn’t agree with them is singled out and crucified. Out of all the films made where actors have portrayed presidents, I must say that my best have been Kevin Kline as Bill Mitchell in Dave, Micheal Douglas as Andrew Shepard in The American President, and Bruce Greenwood as JFK in Thirteen Days.
+Livingston Hampton Personally, I'd add Daniel Day Lewis to that list. His role as Abe Lincoln in the title role was good. Otherwise, definitely yes to Kline & Douglas. A couple of movie legends. As far as Bruce Greenwood, the only movie I can really account was his work with Jason Biggs and the late Paul Walker in Eight Below. Great adventure movie especially for dog lovers. I haven't followed his career much.
+Verrückt Hund I agree with you about Daniel Day Lewis and his masterful portrayal of Lincoln. I just wish that film was more about Lincoln than the 13th Amendment.
If anything, it shows hypocrisy. The first part is really good, because it really explains liberty and the land of the free. And then they go into a spiel about how I'm going to remove your liberty.
As timeless as ever. When a section of the population of this country thinks that we would be better off with no congress or courts and that the president should just be able to "run things" you know we are in very, very bad shape as a democratic republic.
Or maybe you misunderstand them. If they're saying we need an overhaul of congress, especially because of the one we have NOW, I couldn't agree with them more. Neither side is saying ANYTHING about holding its own accountable and that's something we ALL need to do.
Jaimelyn Gray... first I want to thank you for making such a nice video of a very touching film scene. I couldn't help but read your comment about President Obama taking notes from Michael Douglas's character Andrew Shepard. You may not agree with me on this but for the past seven years Obama has done his best as the leader of our country, but it's hard when Congress, the GOP, and even some Democrats fight him every step of the way. I highly doubt Andrew Shepard had this same problem.
When virtually every one ok f your ideas are Unconstitutional and idiotic, you should get oposistion. Transgendered restrooms? 34 genders? DACA, OBAMACARE HIGHLY UNPOPULAR, BUT THE LITTLE EMPEROR DIDNT CARE. HE WAS A LOUSY AND DISGRACEFUL PRESIDENT.
The movie character was talking about convincing Americans that he is right and changing the law (legally), not unilaterally getting rid of the second amendment. Not to mention when the second amendment was written a fast shot could fire about 3 SHOTS A MINUTE now the fire rates are much higher and guns much more accurate and reliable and therefore much more deadly. So the speech isn't hypocritical you're just a childish moron who doesn't know what the fuck he is talking about.
Noah Harvey YOU ARE the hypocrite! First of all, this movie was way back in 1995. Secondly, he is talking about convincing Americans that he's right, not getting rid of the 2nd amendment. The problem with people like you is that, until you lose a loved one tocan assault rifle attack, you don't give a damn about those who do. Hasn't what happened in Vegas recently taught you anything? The killer owned 42 high powered assault rifles, a civilian. People ought to own guns for self-defense, and not use it to kill those they don't agree with. Everything Andy Shepard (Michael Douglas) said can accurately apply to Trump. He hasn't done anything to change people's lives now that he's POTUS, but is busy blaming everyone but himself for the failure of his policies. A good leader takes responsibility for their actions, and Trump hasn't done that at all whatsoever. Like Bob Rumson, he's only making gullible Americans afraid of the country's problems, and blaming Obama for it, but refusing to see that the buck stops with him as POTUS. So stop calling Douglas' character a hypocrite, because you sound like one!
Michael is so truthful here & he read from a script. Wish others would listen to this advice carefully, instead of putting their own spin on it & abusing of it.
How can he be a member of the ACLU and be against handguns? I know this is fictional but even the ACLU today says that a handgun ban is unconstitutional, not to mention this movie was made in 1995.
If it were assault weapons, I'd agree with him. But he would never convince me to give up a handgun that I'd use to make sure my home was defended. You don't need a military grade weapon when the country has allowed consistent school shootings, let alone lack of background checks and then give more to the population when they clearly have shown they cannot be trusted. We used to have a delicate balance between home defense/hunting vs a well regulated militia.
Why doesn't it surprise me that rather than listening to the principles of what is being said, they concentrate on the example of an issue being raised. It doesn't matter if you agree or disagree with his fake views on gun control and crime prevention. The point is, he's correct in principle. One thing I think that gets missed is that he did not say "I'll go to door to door and get the guns." He said "I'll go to door to door if I have too but I'm gonna convince Americans I'm right and I'm gonna get the guns." Big difference. It's that whole convincing Americans thing that real presidents seem to want to forget.
Great movie I saw where someone posted on here about their favorite three presidents portrayed in movies and I agree they've always been my favorite three also Michael Douglas here in American President Kevin Kline in Dave and Bruce Greenwood in thirteen days all three excellent excellent movies
two topics that are still so incredibly valid and important today: gun control and global warming. well... i hope somebodys 15 minutes in particular are up pretty soon too....
This Speech Is The Best Example Which All International World Elect Leaders Must Set As Governing Standard For Their Country That Allow Law Make Change Or Justification When Need So It Will Suitable During Current Time!
I may not agree with the bit about guns, despite not owning one, but that is one of my favorite moments in one of my favorite movies in cinematic history.
Same here. I think civilians do not need assault weapons, but we should still be able to bear arms as promised by our forefathers, so I support legal ownership of hand guns.
But can you agree that America needs gun control? I don’t want to fight with you. You seem like a rational individual but America does have a long history of gun violence completely out of control, I do believe that people should have the right to protect themselves. But my position is we all want to make sure that guns are in the right hands.
This video and the speech/words inspires me every single time I see it! I would love some of it being used in current political context And yes Michael Douglas rocks!

@@akshaynatu6568 - Everything you are saying is projection. You might be right, but I’d like to think Sheppard was a good man, and just might have pulled it off. Sadly there was no sequel so we will never know. 🤣
@@Erin-Thor I'm saying it because in real life, presidential candidates forget about you and your problems as soon as they secure your vote, much like car salesmen who don't give a shit about you past getting your signature on all the dotted lines. We all know it's true.
Maybe in this fictional universe, Andy Shephard really was a true selfless hero and man of the people. But IRL, a highly entertaining speech like this would get nothing more from me than a lot of smirks and amusement.
We need serious, not seriously deranged...
Too bad we don't have anyone in DC with this level of integrity! We have the Bob, that's for sure!
It amazes me how Democrats actually believe that a President is going to put a private organization that gets its funding from private citizens to defend a Constitutional right out of business. Pandering at its finest.
If that's all you can think of you're an idiot. You're a puppet.

Deserve better? I don't deserve an authoritarian government who thinks my right to defend myself is a threat to their agenda. That is what you want, and no I'm not a Trump supporter, I'm a former Democrat who understands the left is fundamentally dangerous.
This was how it was in the 1990s folks. I miss it like an ache in my heart. Our country was a shining beacon of inclusion, meritocracy and innovation.
MrNewAmerican I felt the need to watch this just to do my heart good. I ended up in tears.
OMG . I love what you said . Thank you !
You and I have very different memories of the 90s.
Joe Biden, TAKE NOTES!! This is how you do a press conference.
SIGN THIS BOY UP - RUN HIM UP THE FLAGPOLE AND SALUTE!!!!
I love this movie, I think it's one of Michael Douglas's better movies, and the cast, Wonderful.
I always wished we had a president like THIS one.... or even President Bartlet in the West Wing. Compared to how presidents are portrayed by Aaron Sorkin, we have absolute crap presidents. lol
I love looking back on it how this movie was a test run for the West Wing, even some of the actors crossed over.
Obama is that president
A very crappier one! Never liked Obama
We need to redirect our focus on ourselves, but also the world.
It’s time for America to lead. Not just our nation, but also other nations.
Teamwork is the key to success. We need that success now!!!

@@jasonbowser5754 Who exactly have the Democrats been fear mongering against?
Do you hear the Democrats trying vilify Muslims, Hispanics or Black people with racist fear mongering rhetoric?
Did Hillary call Mexicans (quote) "rapists and murderers".
Did Joe Biden ever call for a Muslim ban or try to stop Black people from voting with voter ID laws, gerrymandering or voter intimidation tactics?
I sort of consider this speech to be Michael Douglas's penance for "Greed... is Good", which gave us the 80s and much of the 90s.
What exactly is that supposed to mean?
Like Father like son/ His Father was a Top notch Actor Too.
Hands down, I would go with Harrison Ford as James Marshall in Air Force One.
Dave is the BEST
Bruce did a heck of a job in Thirteen Days....watched it again the other day...for the 10th time...
Underrated movie
Last line...nary a mic drop moment on film that approaches it...❤️ 🎤
Hank Pym, Marty Mcfly and Uncle Ben and Dr Wendy Lawson
If anything, it shows hypocrisy. The first part is really good, because it really explains liberty and the land of the free. And then they go into a spiel about how I'm going to remove your liberty.
I like the last bit. Making you afraid of it and telling you who to blame for it. So true even now.
Still gives me chills
Love this guy. That is all
As timeless as ever.
No. Do NOT take notes. We DO NOT need him violating the second amendment.

How is it that American films can create the Presidents that America needs, but American politics can't.
"Serious problems to solve and serious people to solve them..." needed around the world right now (and always)
What the hell? This man wants to talk about protecting the bill of rights and then proceeds to say he wants to ban handguns? What a hypocrite!!!
BIGGSjessieWEDGE the founding fathers weren't stupid, they knew guns would advance in technology.
BIGGSjessieWEDGE he literally said "handguns are a threat to national security"
This was similar to his role in traffic. Yeah
My name is Andrew Shephard and I am the President. BOOM!!
The problem of banning guns is getting them from their owners. There’s no agency or locality powerful enough to do that except the US military.
You're NOT getting my gun, Andy !
Like a BOSS!
This is one of Micheal Douglas’s best performances!
Bob Rumson, aka Trump

Tall Man from Phantasm, aka Joe Biden
Only thing awkward about the speech is how he goes on about his membership that upholds the constitution… then talks about banning firearms. 😂

Same here. I think civilians do not need assault weapons, but we should still be able to bear arms as promised by our forefathers, so I support legal ownership of hand guns.
