    My general rule is don't update if you don't have any issues. If you have issues, then updating BIOS after having tried everything else is okay.

    If it isn't broke, don't fix it! I always check when I build my PC, then check every 6 months and read the notes but if I'm not having problems I leave it, I update the Chipset drivers more often

    Its a lot easier flashing a BIOS now than it was 10yrs+ years ago when you had to find the latest BIOS from the manufacturer, download the flash utility and cross your fingers it worked when you booted it back up. Now most updates you can get through Windows update. Although, I generally turn them off and I'll do that particular update on its own. And I'm pretty sure its updated if you're using Linux as well.

    I had an interesting experience back in the Bulldozer days. I bought an AMD FX 8120 alongside an MSI motherboard in late 2011. Overclocked it to 4ghz, never bothered to update the bios because I was still newish to pc building at the time. No issues on the outset. Flash forward almost a year, and I'm trying to play the newly released CS GO. The game plays, but it's having huge stutter issues all throughout. I'm well within the hardware requirements. Installing newest GPU drivers didnt fix it. I tried a bunch of other options but nothing seemed to work. I don't know what prompted me to do it, but I tried updating the bios and it completely solved my stutter woes. Not sure what the issue it fixed was, but I was probably running the launch bios that shipped with the mobo, new platform instability and all. Since then I always update the bios when I get a new system. If the platform is newer I will check every month or so. AM4 had a lot of bios updates early that gave loads of performance boosts as higher clocked memory became more compatible. For more mature platforms, like AM4 today is, Ill check maybe once a year.

    Thanks for this video, I was really wary about updating my BIOS but my laptop is only 3 months old and I noticed my model has had 3 updates within the last 6 months and was worried this was a bad sign, but now I know it's because newer ones have more updates at the beginning so feel less worried now, but will ensure I take all proper precautions.

    Bad flashes can be recovered on various brands by booting with a flash drive with bios on it. So just because you have a bad bios flash doesn't mean you are dead in the water.

  • @roberthunter6927
    @roberthunter6927 8 месяцев назад

    Some BIOS flashing application don't write to the whole chip, they just make the necessary changes, and leave some of the BIOS memory free. This is bad practice. Having a UPS [Uninterruptible Power Supply] is a good idea too. Some people have those [so-called] "solar chargers", which is a bit of a misnomer because they can also be re-charged by mains power, or via your car's 12 volt socket. Basically, they are usually have a decent sized lithium battery, with an inverter and other outlets, [12v DC, USB, including a clean A/c output for whatever your country's A/C voltage is: 240v, 110v, etc, etc.

    Had an HP AIO that wouldn't see the SSD SATA drive I installed. Checked HP's website for an updated BIOS that would possibly fix this. Downloaded the newer BIOS, installed it and the computer failed to boot! Had to order a used mobo because of a bad BIOS. Replacement mobo worked just fine and since it was a newer model, it saw the SSD SATA drive I installed. Guess the bad BIOS from HP was bittersweet.
