This is so cool to see, I’ve traced my family tree back as far as the Teutonic Empire, But sadly I know so little about the empire itself, I never knew how much went into getting ready for battle back then! Thank you for this video :)
This was a fantastic and informative video, I learned a lot about armor and how it comes together! Thank you for sharing, this was awesome and just what I was looking for!
It is very easy to deduce that in these conditions if you had to develop an intense combat, you could only do it for a few minutes without falling to the ground. Even with the physical preparation of a professional athlete today. And the warmer the climate, that capacity decreases exponentially. Good video, congrats.
@@spades9681 In a time where sieges prevailed, with much difference, than battles, deducing that these armors were made only to go on a horse is not having much idea of what is being talked about. I can buy you that argument if we are talking about a later time, when plate armor was fully developed (XV century) and some suit of armors was made exclusively for participating in tournaments on a horse. Extremely heavy armor made solely to protect against the clash of spears in jousting and tournaments that were not intended for fighting on foot.
@@pulsarplay5808 Of course they weren’t made solely for use on horseback, all I meant is that almost every unique facet of the high medieval knight’s armor arose from mounted use (face protection, rider’s stitch, coat/pair-of-plates, etc.). The knight of this period was principally mounted, and this did not always mean pitched battles full of cavalry charges and the like, but also small skirmishes, including during a siege. Because sieges, as I’m sure you know, were more attrition than actual combat, and what combat did take place was not restricted to a charge on foot on top of siege engines and ladders, but also skirmishes outside the walls. But yes, my calling it irrelevant was misplaced, because foot combat in this configuration did occur, and yes, I’m sure you’d have to pull back after only a little bit of actual fighting.
Thank you for the video, I cosplay and would like to build a cosplay armor set that looks like the real deal, so I can go to my local medieval fair in style. You've really helped me, now I know how its supposed to look.👍👍
Quite historicaly accurate as of my point of view, and a good video work too Yet , one little but important detail is missing. Footwraps en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Footwraps. Puting the kind of shoes you use on a bare feet and then walk on any signifficant distance could cause problems to a teutonic knight :) Foot wraps are so simple that been in use since bronze age if not from stone age so using them would be perfectly historic, and comfortable. Aside from this brillliant.
Omg you mean they didn’t wear one giant bathrobe sized piece of loose chain mail over a sweater? Or a silly brown coat of plates like in GOT? I love this well doen
I always thought the mail mitten slit design was so ingenious. being able to use your fingers for dexterous tasks while still being able to have your armored mits on at a moments notice.
Start a war ? You must be knew to history. Not to start war, to protect the pilgrims and the people that were rapped, kidnapped, killed, by the sarracens/muslims wile on pilgrimage to the Holy Land, and to reapture it after was taken by force . All of this decades and decades after the first church and Christians were burned to the ground , killed and converted ( small stuff, right ? ) . Very different from starting a war.
Pedro Silva Ferreira What a strange comment. You obviously romanticise about the brave Christian warriors (who also murdered, raped and burned places of worship) You also obviously agree with the politics for starting the war, but yes, sending an army thousands of miles away to a different country is starting a war.
@@callumbiasnow4825 the crusaders were sent to a land that was christian under byzantine rule for centuries, a land that was forcefully converted to islam by the sword, an expansion that at it's peak stopped only in nowadays southern France. I know this is two yrs old, but layers beat thickness? Layers are what cause thickness
@@dustinthesmoke7757 you can have a thick plate of steel on you and it will be a worse type of armour than having mail with a padded piece of clothing underneath. Layers do cause thickness, but thickness can exist without layers

It took so long. Now i understand why skirmishes was so dangerous in that times

Teutonic Knights mostly fought in the colder Baltic area anyways, but yea I get what you mean.
@@RESIST_DIGITAL_ID_UK not really - while I was in Apulia I learnt that they had lots of possessions in Southern Italy and took active part in the Sixth crusade lead by Frederick of Swabia, King of Sicily and German Emperor - being from Germany himself he probably patronized the "German Order".
There in Italy you can still find medieval churches and towers named German or Teutonic.
Very cool video to see 13th Century Teutonic armor. My family is from the Baltics where a lot of castles (mostly in ruins) were built by these knights. Great choice of music! I have a similar knights templar cape with a red cross and red inside lining.
Now imagine having to take that all off because you need to take a piss.
There's actually very little for you to remove to pee. Number two would be more difficult, but we know all the brave little knights go before leaving to take Jerusalem!
They peed inside during battle, it was Quicker and easier.

I was already loving the fit, but when you pun on that cape made me love it even more.
Very cool!! I started tracing my ancestry back in my father's family, and found that we have a couple of ancestors that were Teutonic Knights. I need to learn more about them.
The most impressive part of this video was how easily you manage to put on that mail coat.
This is so cool to see, I’ve traced my family tree back as far as the Teutonic Empire, But sadly I know so little about the empire itself, I never knew how much went into getting ready for battle back then! Thank you for this video :)
They were never a empire

Great video! No unneccessary talking, no bullshit just a man putting on his armor in peace.
When you change armors in an RPG in the middle of a fight:
Awesome display which could be used in a museum as educational clip
It is very easy to deduce that in these conditions if you had to develop an intense combat, you could only do it for a few minutes without falling to the ground. Even with the physical preparation of a professional athlete today. And the warmer the climate, that capacity decreases exponentially. Good video, congrats.
Not relevant given this armor was intended for use on horseback.
The cloak really looks fantastic - the weight of the fabric is perfect

For some weird and probably fair reason, I find this video extremely satisfying
Quite historicaly accurate as of my point of view, and a good video work too Yet , one little but important detail is missing. Footwraps en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Footwraps. Puting the kind of shoes you use on a bare feet and then walk on any signifficant distance could cause problems to a teutonic knight :) Foot wraps are so simple that been in use since bronze age if not from stone age so using them would be perfectly historic, and comfortable. Aside from this brillliant.
I was about to ask about that. Thanks for the link!
I too was thinking the same thing!
Footwraps work!
I used them for two years of my life while enlisted.

I always thought the mail mitten slit design was so ingenious. being able to use your fingers for dexterous tasks while still being able to have your armored mits on at a moments notice.
Imagine putting all that on and thinking “I know, let’s go to start war in the Middle Eastern deserts!”
Of course they also pillaged and murdered, like everyone else at the time, but to think that it was just about sending an army to conquer land is selective revisionism; the 1st crusade was a rematch for the abbasid caliphate jihad
