Why You Should Think Twice Before Eating Canned Cranberry Sauce

- One of the most traditional of Thanksgiving side dishes is cranberry sauce, something we seldom eat at any other time of year. In fact, it may be hard to come across fresh cranberries should you suddenly get an urge to cook up some sauce in a month not starting with the letter "N."
The rest of the year, most of us consume our share of cranberries in the form of juice or Craisins, but you can usually still find a can or two of cranberry sauce on the supermarket shelves year-round.
But should you actually be eating the kind of cranberry sauce that comes out of a can? We spoke with two food experts, dietitian Emily Wunder and chef Seamus Mullen, and both of them gave us the same answer: no, you should probably give it a pass. It's almost as easy, not to mention far healthier and tastier, to simply make your own sauce, at least when cranberries are in season.
Wunder, creator of the Healthier Taste website, advises that with any kind of canned food, the most important thing to do is to check the ingredient list to see what's really in that can.
With cranberry sauce, however, the problem isn't unrecognizable ingredients, but rather familiar ingredients that are bad news. Wunder says that most canned cranberry sauce is sweetened with high fructose corn syrup, which can result in 25 grams of sugar per serving, with 24 grams of that being added sugar. She suggests that unless cranberry sauce from a can happens to be one of your all-time holiday faves, save the sugar for dessert.
Should you be inclined to make your own sauce, Wunder suggests swapping out the sugar in the recipe for honey. She says that honey has a lower glycemic index than sugar, and the higher the glycemic index of a food, the faster it will make your blood sugar rise. Therefore, any time you can get the chance to lower that glycemic index, you should take it, since it's a far healthier option for managing your blood sugar levels. What's more, the honey/sugar swap should also reduce the sugar content down to a number you're more comfortable with.
Mullen, a chef at the Institute of Culinary Education in Los Angeles, is also no fan of canned cranberry sauce for the holiday table, calling it "cloyingly sweet and over-processed." He says that the DIY approach allows you to guarantee the quality of the ingredients, and he also echoes Wunder's advice, adding that cooking your own sauce lets you ensure that the sugar levels are kept at a reasonable level.

Glad u showed this. I eat it once a year. I will be sure to eat the whole dam can now
Point is, making it yourself is so much better
Lol exactly. The people who are so worried about passing away are sometimes the first to go due to their constant stressing
Don't care. Still eating it. It's once or twice a year.
Point is, making it oneself is so much better
Same

I agree!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Simmer down, no one's got a gun to your head, we're just spitting facts.
I ate canned jellied cranberry sauce every Thanksgiving for decades. Still eating it and I'm now old.
Something people have once a year at most, and they're bashing it?
Point is, making it oneself is so much better. And there’s TONS of great recipes on RUclips
Just saying
or you could stop and think for a second and realize it's Thanksgiving dinner and it's not going to be healthy. It's also not going to kill you.
Point is, making it at home is so much better
Just saying
@@osmrrdgz I don't disagree. I make mine with ginger ale and orange juice and it's awesome. But I also enjoy the one out the can.
@@Grayald let me get that recipe though lol
I could eat the entire can myself. Big deal! Once I year I think my body will be ok.
Point is, making it oneself is so much better. And there’s TONS of great recipes on RUclips

Only a hater would make a video like this out of all holiday foods

@@osmrrdgz Thanks Osmar! I know, when I was little , my Momma made everything from scratch. I used to but getting older & really tired. I’ll have to teach the new generation then let them take over. So this year it’s the canned & I’m good. Have a great Thanksgiving, we all have so much to be grateful for, blessings!
@@anonymousposter4481 awesome! And yes we do have much to be thankful for
Blessings!
😂
Bah humbug my husband loves the canned sauce he bought two today for our Thanksgiving dinner and the leftovers that follow.
I've been eating it for 28yrs. I've only developed a eye twitch. Just buy, eat it!
I love cranberry sauce. It's awesome with pretty much everything on a Thanksgiving plate, including mashed potatoes, green beans, and especially the marshmallow sweet potato casserole.
And for those who chose jellied sauce, like me:
Make fresh cranberry sauce then blend it smooth. a little more sugar-or honey!-is needed because pureeing the cranberry skins makes the sauce tarter. Por in to a Jell-O mold and chill for a few hours(make in advanced) -and there you have it-your own homemade jellied cranberry sauce!
Seriously? I'm a nutritionist, and on every other day, I eat whole foods, no processed sugar, and plenty of fruits and veggies. But on Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner, even *I* DON'T CARE about some additives or high fructose corn syrup in my food. What's the point of worrying, for one meal (unless you're allergic or sensitive to the ingredients)? Also, this video would make sense if all the other obviously unhealthy staples of thanksgiving dinner were cautioned against. Cranberry sauce has to be one of the least offenders.
It's usually my major canned desert I buy it goes with all types of meat as a side dish
Quality and preference for the sauce is one thing, but do you really think people will cut this from their meal they have once a year because there's a lot of sugar?? Lmao.
Even homemade had a lot of sugar ha
Its so good and i love it i ate a whole can 2x
I love cranberry sauce with chicken don't like filet without it. So I buy extra bags of fresh and freeze them.
Health concerns aside, home made tastes so much better and is very easy to make, as well as freezing well.
I'm watching while eating canned cranberries
Looks delicious!! 😁
Hey, OCEAN SPRAY IS THE ONLY KIND I LIKE...!!!...!!!
Me eating raw cranberry jelly while watching this:👁️👄👁️ _..ima finish eating it_
Thanksgiving dinner is a big enough challenge. No I will not make cranberry sauce.
Cranberry Salad = Layer crushed Ritz or Hi Ho Crackers, whole berry Cranberry Sauce, and whipped cream in a nice, crystal or clear bowl, sprinkle Nutmeg on top of last layer of whipped cream. You could also use Graham crackers crushed instead of the Ritz or Hi Ho crackers. A nice change from the normal, and kids will usually like it better than the plain Cranberry Sauce.
Never heard of this, but now I'm thinking of trying it.
@@Grayald It's a personal family recipe. If you try it, let me know what you think. It's also a nice combination of salty and sweet.
Very interesting combinations. I enjoy every ingredient that you listed so this has got to be good. Thanks for sharing.
@@leeleemee You're welcome!!!
B.S. , love canned cranberry. Have had it all my life.
Too late I just ate a whole can of that stuff
The canned one is awesome
It's traditional. I think 1 slice of canned cranberries a year is not going to hurt anyone.
I’m here for a good time, not a long time
Even if you made your own cranberry sauce, it won't be "healthy". Irrespective of who makes it, it is going to need a ton of sugar. This is similar to those people who say homemade jams are "healthier". They aren't. Any jam will be roughly equal parts fruit and sugar for reasons of preservation
The first time I had canned cranberry sauce it was super grainy. I tried a different can the next year and it was the same. I just thought canned cranberry sauce texture was just like that so I avoided it for like 25 years. Now I make my own and love it! And there is no way I'm going to swap sugar for honey. I'll stick with what I like
Honey is a type of sugar tho
@@arielbanks5557 apes are just tailless monkeys is the exact type of energy I'm getting from you
@@arielbanks5557 I know a second comment seems a bit personal but I promise you it's just me trying to elaborate
Yes honey and sugar are both made from Plants but through different means one is made from insects with a goal being energy and the second is made from humans with the pure goal being taste two different worlds not the same results
@@adadjoke6252 you seem very needy
@@arielbanks5557 I know right that's why I'm going to need you to take back your comments
I eat a whole can of cranberry sauce erryday. Yummy yummy yummy 😋
In my family we eat cranberry sauce all year round. We eat it with chicken. Chicken, rice or mashed potatoes, mushroom soup over the rice / potatoes and chicken than side of cranberry sauce
Sounds delicious 😋. We’ve never ventured outside of Thanksgiving with cranberry sauce.
I eat this once a month
Is there any other brand 🤔 😀 I’m with you.
You are absolutely right about the sugar but how about the 4 or 5 glasses of wine that slice of pie and the other just a small slice of death by chocolate cake
You leave my holiday wine out of this!!!! 😂
Its cranberry sauce your suppose to have sugar in it. It’s a tart berry.
Bruh I just got some
Always get angry when people say that you should you Everything yourself not everyone have time to just do everything thanksgiving can be already stressful for some people one more thing that they have to do themself is really stressful it's just once a year So what's the problem with the chemicals anywhere and just because I don't understand What's in it doesn't mean it's dangerous
The sugar and calories from the cranberry sauce is the least of your worries.. you eat such a relatively small amount of it compared to what's on the rest of your plate
Ohhh nooooo sUgARrrrrr everyone run.
Just let us enjoy the awful things we love.
It’s not often.
Canberry sauce.
Never! [Freedom intensifies] merica!
In the grand scheme of things, there are worse things for your health than the sugar in cranberry sauce......like putting up with freeloading, annoying relatives that bust balls on Thanksgiving
Other yumy recipe
Look at the description---
fck my blood sugar I will die with something I love XD
Only do cranberry with vodka
I fucks with it ✊
Make relish in the food processor, not cooked sauce, that's what I grew up with, & is 10x better
I eat a can a day
COME ON!!!!! that canned cranberry sauce is eaten once a year, besides there are other canned food that is pretty bad for us and if you want one that can kill you if you do not watch out is salt, refine salt with so many additives....
Just buy organic canned cranberry sauce.
Oh, piss off. Pass the canned stuff. Yum.
Wow! How ridiculous! Like the sugar in this stuff is the concern during the holidays!!!! I’ve seen it all now! Talk about a buzz kill!!!!
I love that shit! And it's only 1 day out of the year, we have the rest of the year to fill ourselves with other bad shit, so relax
Not a problem for me. I can't stand cranberries in any form.
Thumbnail 😂
seems like similar problem with lobsters and whales. Sorry whales, you came in second.
BUY OCEAN SPRAY

It tastes bad too.
What happened to her voice ?? It’s different...or is it another person ?
#@GoodJob!?
Im so poor
Eat the canned Cranberry sauce and ignore videos like this. Life is too short for this nonsense.
OK - Mashed - get you some business!
Way to ruin my Thanksgiving!
Thanks, buzzkills.
I don't trust a guy named shamus
I never ate it because it looks gross.
First
It tastes gross. That should be reason enough to not eat it
Think you're preaching to the demons. Most of these things are about fast food.
third
Most people in the comments saying it's only once a year, it's a tradition. That's why everywhere you look, you'll mostly see fat people because there's no discipline of what they eat. The video is about discipline and educational.
How about we ban lingonberry jam for the swedes too while we are at it, my favorite sweet chinese sausage will be banned too. What the heck is wrong with you man.
This shit is fucking nasty.
Show people the truth, then sit back and watch the list of excuses they use against it. 🫠
