The production for this album is just next level looking back at the last decade of Dream Theater records. My love for them has been revitalized with how great the writing has been, too!
Andy Sneap. Never fails.
I think the production and overall quality of The Astonishing was stellar, with LaBrie as a standout performance. I wish fans weren't so toxic over the album, the we might continue getting the extra creative side of DT.
@@Ahov you mean the extra pussified side of DT 😂😂. That album was their jumping the shark moment much like BTBAM with Coma Ecliptic. 2021 has been a good comeback year for a lot of bands.
Yeah, the official videos for The Alien and for Awaken The Master have that "I tried" feeling by who did it, the video has no concept, it's not synched with the song, it's just a slide with some blueprint 3D models made in a fast way with simulations that are made automatic, it has no work into it. The songs yes, they are "just the next level of production", but the videos were uneccesary. The art cover for the album is great, Invisible Monster official video is good.
@@gattsruko Eh, I like looking at pretty colors and animations! Especially while intoxicated 😀.

'Cause no one can't
The intro was heavy...I mean dense heavy...I mean like blackhole dense...I mean 8 string 90 gauge heavy... Easily one of the 'leading' songs of this album. And I've to deeply commend the production of this album...HOLY MASTER OF FADERS !!! Thank you DT. I'm still smiling...
I was showing the album to my dad last night and towards the end of Transcending Time he said, “Y’know, as they get older I wouldn’t mind if they explored this direction more!” and I replied, “…ready for definitive proof they haven’t aged enough yet?” And then the 8-string intro caused our van to have a hull breach
They went all ballady on The Astonishing and fans hated it. I doubt theyll try that again for a while.
@@DavidOakesMusic Im sorry but i have to disagree. This track is bald and lacks of soul we felt in previous record. 8 string guitar doesnt help this time cause it's not utilized well. This CD has no theme, lacks of inspiration. That sad cause i consider DT my very best band of all time.
@@DavidOakesMusic Only the immature fans hated The Astonishing. That record had a wide mix of songs, as we've come to expect. DT's heartfelt, expertly-crafted and supremely melodic ballads are just as powerful as any of their heavier compositions.
@@Aldrenas This song completely retains the classic DT sound. How is it not a good utilization then? You can't expect them to suddenly turn into djent.
@@GregJonson I dont feel it. For me this song is artificaly made. Sounds like recorded by AI, not human with feelings.

I appreciate the fact that you don't hear the same thing over and over in this song, as you do with most music.
Mike, that's very true - the relative complexity of the music and orchestration/arrangement means that there's more for our ears and minds to 'feed upon' and respond to on each listen.
Most "pop" music. Progressive metal is rarely repetitive.
That's Dream Theater and Progressive Rock for ya. The song changes quickly as it progresses, like all of their songs.

Yeah, it would be great if the label released them all on RUclips for everyone who just can't buy the deluxe or the artbook editions of the album
It's mandatory that they at least upload every track as a video. They should've done it already since day 1. I think bands are beginning to realize that comments are important, since RUclips got rid of them in automatic uploads. Iron Maiden did that, and it's better than having your song uploaded on a random channel like it's happening right now.

Insane track, probably my favorite. The thing I love the most about it is how in the verses, the mood shifts seamlessly from dark and mysterious to bright and hopeful, I cannot even put my finger into it as I'm not versed in musical theory or anything like that, but does anyone else get what I'm talking about? It's like, the melody is going sort of tense and dark, but it ends up resolving upbeat and bright, man I love that aspect of the song so much, my god!
Petrucci says something like that in the virtual album release party. I think its in the documental that begins at 2:13.14 but cant remember the moment
A lot of that happens in all the album really. Every song progresses seemlessly, every set of verse makes a progression that is noticeable but delicate at the same time. I dont know either how they pull those things off but a lot of care and thought has been poured in this piece of work, and its amazing.
I get your point. That generally happens quite often with this band. One of the reasons I love them so much 🖤
The feeling you are getting starts from a pedal tone being played on the guitar and bass - the repetitive root note tells us where "home" is tonally but not what larger chords are being used. The keys and vocals build different chords and intervals OVER that pedal tone to shift through different feels. They move around b minor, b major, and some other chords to create the feelings you mentioned.
@@robertg420 That is amazing

I am always amazed when guys who play blues, AC DC or Chuck Berry complain that DT lack feel and groove. It always makes me smile. Sure they can sound generic at times but as far as musicianship is concerned, ladies and gents this is fkin' next level. This is some of the most complex compositions out there. Just simply amazing.
Those are the same people who could never appreciate Allan Holdsworth or Ron Jarzombek. They can't compute it.
Music, like all art; is subjective, but I understand your frustration because I share it. In my day to day life I pine to connect with those who share my musical interests, but often find myself disappointed when they are into what I describe as 'basic blues'. Blues undeniably plays a central role in the family tree of rock, metal and jazz; ergo prog as well, but blues in isolation is pretty unsatisfying to my ears. I love the mix and the variety of styles involved with DT. Yes, I realise modern DT is mostly prog-metal, but within that umbrella a lot of fun is to be had.

Mangini is fucking amazing on this album
Good god, this track is absolutely excellent. I've been going between this and Sleeping Giant a lot, since rn they're my two favourite tracks from the album (though I love all of it!), and boy this one has so much that I love about it. The eight string is what most people are talking about, but honestly, it's so much more than that to me. It's the excellent keyboards that take centre stage through the intro. It's the tight rhythm section giving a dramatic drive to the song. It's the amazing progressions and melodies that are utterly transcendental. It's the vocal performance and harmonies that add an extra mystique to the song. It's the insane solos that seamlessly implement the song's motifs. For me at least, this song is overflowing with amazing moments.
And you know what? I loved Distance Over Time, and I loved self-titled, and I loved A Dramatic Turn Of Events, and I liked The Astonishing (albeit fractionally less). So I'm not gonna say "Mangini sounds better than ever" because he's sounded excellent to me since his debut. But the production on this album is continuing the trend with Distance Over Time in that it balances the instruments well, and elevates the music to new heights.
I just adore this album so far.
My two faves so far too!

This is the best Dream Theater djent song ever)))
My thoughts after the interview of Saturday: JP put the producer in front the guitar player, trying to make all the instruments well mixed.
If you look at the past, JP spent a lot of time in 20 years studing his sound and eventually it got bigger and thicker (like his byceps) and already in LTE3 I remember Jordan telling when "the guitar player that has a sound wall bigger than my house, asks Can you hear the keyboard parts well...". I'd say that together with the Mix/new DTHQ/Production, the existence of parallel projects made this album have a soul, because JP and JR could switch mindset for this album, as if LTE3 was an escape valve for technicalities. Also the fact that James could mute the others in his studio and listen to his own ideas, made all verses and chorus very catchy this time. Awesome album!
It definitely sounds better.
*Mangini (darn autocorrect)
I think it’s more about Andy sneap’s mix, not JP being the producer.
@@michaelglindmyer3336 I agree, Andy Sneap's mix changed the sound for the better the most because they were recording the albums good enough each and every time before (they always had recording engineers with them, the best mics, nice rooms and gear etc.). The mixing can really lift the sound quality more than people think and matters a lot if you want to have a great-sounding final record.

Im not a follower of this band, but JFC, this is good. The intro immediately slapped me into submission. And the rest of it, well they're great as usual.

Best album since A.D.T.O.E.
So after having been a long time DT fan, I was kind of scared after hearing they were releasing anything again. Awake was the last album I bought and hadn't really heard anything since Kevin left. Images and Words was actually the reason I started learning keyboards. I'm not real sure what happened there, I've heard rumors, but nothing that I know to be a fact. That said, I really like this. Labrie's voice is still amazing, very powerful, and the staple of the band. The music was slightly heavier than I usually like, however still very technical. I miss John, John, and Kevin's "dueling banjo" homages with keyboard, bass, and guitar solos proceeding one another, but it feels more like a team effort than I'm used to, which is a great thing. It feels like they get along better, and the lyrics didn't plant doubt about the future of the band, like Awake did. Can't wait to hear more. And again, especially knowing what happened to James, the vocals were absolutely amazing. It completely recaptured everything I loved about DT, from the divine musicianship to the strong vocal track.
