Just remove the thermostat with the hose on. Hold the hose with your left hand, twist the thermostat off with your right. The coolant will stay inside the hose instead of pouring down the front of your engine. 👍🏻
*EVERYONE!* Look for almost invisible cracks in the goose neck of the MOPAR thermostat housing. It took me *FOREVER* to figure this out! My coolent level was always slowly dropping, but I couldn't figure where or how because there was never any visible sign, just a very faint odor of coolent. (Problem even continued after switching out the oil cooler.) When the check engine light told me to replace the thermostat at the 6-year mark, I found red goo on the thermostat housing dried over almost invisible hairline cracks in the goose neck. (I needed a magnifying glass to see them!) The coolent was slowly leaking out and evaporating before it ever had a chance to drip.
My original thermostat went out after 9 years. Since then, in the last 6 months I’m about to change it for the third time. Granted one of those times the shop used a non-oem one that was known for failing but the other time it was oem. If the dealership doesn’t warranty this one I’ll just do it myself to save on labor

Thanks for the video Is it normal for the fluid to push out of the coolant filler ? I think I might of gone past 10 minutes it started to pour out so I turned the jeep off gonna let it cool down and run it for 5 more mins
didn't need to drain the radiator because my thermostat just craked and all the coolant went out cheap plastic dries and cracks i wish they made more durable parts if you off road these parts will break.
The drain cock.... counterclockwise? Mine will turn rather easy clockwise, but stops turning counter. (Dealer replaced the radiator a couple years ago. could the replacement drain cock be threaded opposite?
I have a 2015 jeep wrangler sport unlimited its overheating Why driving down the hwy Only and when it's siting it's fine in temp what could it be Needing a Burping or Thermostate changed Hope it's not. Blow head gasket ty let me know what ya think sir?
mine is leaking from the aluminum housing behind the thermostat and the block itself. is a common issue?? . again its not between the thermostat and housing itself, its the aluminum housing and block.
Mine was leaking so bad that my radiator was empty while my reservoir was full, causing the engine to overheat. The crack was barely visible and I managed to stop 99% of the leak by sealing the crack with gasket maker. Nonetheless I am replacing the housing soon.
Surprised Dorman does not make an aluminum thermostat housing like they do the oil cooler assembly, for which you can replace only the thermostat and not the entire housing, that fails at an incredible, lawsuit/recall worthy) rate.
Call me crazy, is there a good reason to drain all the antifreeze? I just put in all new fluid after replacing a failed water pump. If it's not necessary, I'd rather pull the hose and just let it drain as little as possible.
most come as one unit and are pretty inexpensive. I think the plastic starts to warp over time too so it's easier to do them both at the same time. I am on my second one after 114k miles
Great job I have an 2013 jeep wrangler unlimited JK sahara v6 3.6 automatic How often does jeep need a flush and fill? You don’t need to drain the coolant. Just replace what leaks out while doing it.
That’s exactly what I was wondering, thanks!
Hey that’s just to increase shop profits. 🙃
Doing this At 90k miles might as well.
If you are at 5yrs you need to change it
Need and should are different lol. I agree if it needs it do it.
The video was right on the money. Took 30 min tops to change it out.
Thanks for the video.
Great info.

+SGT. NMI Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks. Will check that. I've always smelled coolant since it was new
Change the thermostat and housing in one Shot, cheap enough and sabes headaches.
Thank you SO MUCH for making this! You saved me $225!!!

2013 wrangler
Awesome video. 👍 Now, I feel comfortable changing out my thermostat in my 2017 Rubicon.
Super helpful! Got it done pretty quickly!
You guys always make great videos. Thanks 😁

Curious as to why you had to remove the air filter assembly? Did you have to change out the hose and needed access to the back of the radiator?
glad to see i’m not the only one that has a hard time with those damn clips lol
didn't need to drain the radiator because my thermostat just craked and all the coolant went out cheap plastic dries and cracks i wish they made more durable parts if you off road these parts will break.
Excellent video, thanks for sharing 👍🏽
Sometimes a PIA to “burp”, pull front of the Jeep on ramps, helps the air pass out more freely.
What’s antifreeze recommended for jeep Jk 2014? 50/50? Or concentrate?
Just curious why disconnect the battery? And do we have to drain all the coolant?
Where can I get the 10mm bolts that hold down the throttle body air cleaner hose to the radiator?
Thanks for the video. No silicone on the housing?
Thank you for your great videos

Replace with OE Mopar part, don't use cheap auto parts store aftermarket part or you'll be replacing it again
Great video, thank you.
Stupid question but did you unhook the battery?
The drain cock.... counterclockwise? Mine will turn rather easy clockwise, but stops turning counter. (Dealer replaced the radiator a couple years ago. could the replacement drain cock be threaded opposite?

Let me know if you figure that out mine is doing the same around town it’s fine you get on the highway it hits 3/4

Hey I followed your step but now my fan sounds obviously louder than usual. Is this normal , how do I fix?
REMEMBER if you have OEM anti freeze dont use after market,, they dont get a long and might turn to a jell
Dexcool orange 50/50 antifreeze works excelent
Don't mix HOAT 2013 and older with 2013 mid year to present OAT. Aftermarket makes both coolant types
Thanks. Love these videos.
I just did mine and DIDN'T have to do half of that nonsense.
Do you put silicone??
@@alejandrovaldez7745 no silicone is needed for the o ring gasket.
Make a video? 😂
Yeah, no need to drain the radiator
GOOD VIDEO thanks man!

How to Change Thermostat for a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo thank you
Why was this so over complicated?
Bob is my uncle 🤣
I change my thermostat, but my upper hose is not really hot after few minute later.. why?? And now dont have heat in my side where i sit in the car
how much radiator fluid does it usually take.? More than one jug?
Did you get an answer for this?
@@seanthompson5415 Nope. Realized i didnt have to drain the radiator, just gave it an educated guess.
Do i have to bleed the thermostat
Shop wanted $500 to do this to my daughter’s jeep. 😂😂😂😂

I am curious about the clamp wrench tool that you used. I can't find it on your website.
+Matthew Falk That part can be found here! www.1aauto.com/radiator-hose-clamp-pliers/i/1axaa00076/38/2003
Where is the coolant temperature sensor located
+Ernest Ellison The coolant temperature sensor is typically located in the engine block or cylinder head, near the thermostat housing.
What code would this cause?
An issue with the thermostat may cause a P0128 code. Hope this helps you out! +Sidney Coakley
Can just the thermostat be changed in the original housing ?
Why change the whole unit ?
most come as one unit and are pretty inexpensive. I think the plastic starts to warp over time too so it's easier to do them both at the same time. I am on my second one after 114k miles
You don’t need too. The t stat itself is $14
It’s $40 for the Mopar part, pretty cheap.
Doing all that, might as well do a coolant flush.
Just eat a peanut butter sandwich
Bob’s my uncle?
Okay I thought I misheard that or I'm losing my mind but was thankful to see your comment....wtf weirdest line ever!
Great job

You have hose clamp pliers but you turn a plastic radiator bleed with a pair of channel locs? Lol
buy a funnel geez
Better remove that thermostat. That causes OVERHEAT AND WILL SPEND YOU MONEY
You take to long on the dumb stuff like the pretty panels show the tabs don’t need to watch everything man
Patience is a virtue
